Unprecedented Trapping of Difluorooctamolybdate Anions within an α-Polonium Type Coordination Network

New fluorinated hybrid solids [Mo2F2O5(tr2pr)] (1), [Co3(tr2pr)2(MoO4)2F2]·7H2O (2), and [Co3(H2O)2(tr2pr)3(Mo8O26F2)]·3H2O (3) (tr2pr = 1,3-bis(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)propane) were prepared from the reaction systems consisting of Co(OAc)2/CoF2 and MoO3/(NH4)6Mo7O24, as CoII and MoVI sources, in water (2) or in aqueous HF (1, 3) employing mild hydrothermal conditions. The tr2pr ligand serves as a conformationally flexible tetradentate donor. In complex 1, the octahedrally coordinated Mo atoms are linked in the discrete corner-sharing {Mo2(μ2-O)F2O4N4} unit in which a pair of tr-heterocycles (tr = 1,2,4-triazole) is arranged in cis-positions opposite to “molybdenyl” oxygen atoms. The anti−anti conformation type of tr2pr facilitates the tight zigzag chain packing motif. The crystal structure of the mixed-anion complex salt 2 consists of trinuclear [Co3(μ3-MoO4)2(μ2-F)2] units self-assembling in CoII-undulating chains (Co···Co 3.0709(15) and 3.3596(7) Å), which are cross-linked by tr2pr in layers. In 3, containing condensed oxyfluoromolybdate species, linear centrosymmetric [Co3(μ2-tr)6]6+ SBUs are organized at distances of 10.72−12.45 Å in an α-Po-like network using bitopic tr-linkers. The octahedral {N6} and {N3O3} environments of the central and peripheral cobalt atoms, respectively, are filled by triazole N atoms, water molecules, and coordinating [Mo8O26F2]6− anions. Acting as a tetradentate O-donor, each difluorooctamolybdate anion anchors four [Co3(μ2-tr)6]6+ units through their peripheral Co-sites, which consequently leads to a novel type of a two-nodal 4,10-c net with the Schläfli symbol {32.43.5}{34.420.516.65}. The 2D and 3D coordination networks of 2 and 3, respectively, are characterized by significant overall antiferromagnetic exchange interactions (J/k) between the CoII spin centers on the order of −8 and −4 K. The [Mo8O26F2]6− anion is investigated in detail by quantum chemical calculations.

Editorial: What's Good for Families?

In the midst of the debates in Washington, D.C. over the budget, health care, welfare, and foreign affairs, a central question remains unanswered ~ what is good for families? Part of the ongoing debate has included family preservation which has been both tauted as the solution for society's ills and, simultaneously, as the cause. The reality, of course, is somewhere in between. Family preservation is a new and exciting approach for helping the most basic unit of our society, families, do their job. The principles which guide family preservation grow out of professional helping values and practice experience. Family preservation is a powerful approach to practice which puts the families we are trying to help at the center of the process, not as "symptom bearers" or "dysfunctional systems," but as full partners. While family preservationists enter a family with their eyes wide open to help solve problems, sometimes very serious ones, most of their energy goes to finding strengths and resources in the family in order to meet its needs. It works! And thousands of families who have been helped, along with researchers and other practitioners, sing its praises.

Astronomía, astrología y política en Marco Tulio Cicerón S.I A.C y en Marco Manilio S.I D.C.

Realizamos un estudio de la "simpatía cósmica": la visión filosófica unificada y armónica del universo propia del Estoicismo Medio de Panecio y Posidonio y su influencia en estos dos autores. Analizamos la relación de la astronomía y de la astrología vinculada al aspecto político-filosófico en De Republica de Cicerón, y en las Astronomica de Manilio: planteamos interrogantes acerca de la causa de esta vinculación, e indagamos en la posible necesidad, en el caso de Manilio, de enmascarar políticamente una posición filosófica. Las referencias a Augusto en la obra de Manilio, a los grandes héroes de Roma en la de Cicerón, o el hecho de "mostrar" la grandeza de Roma, o la buena estrella de sus gobernantes son algunas de las estrategias argumentativas utilizadas: el empleo de recursos retóricos como la "escenificación" y la "analogía", entre otros, "ayudarían" a sostener una determinada postura ideológica política y filosófica en los mencionados autores

Representaciones de la vejez y formas del discurso ejemplar romano durante el S. I d.C.

Examinaremos cómo la vejez en el corpus fedriano se configura a partir de los diálogos que este establece con sus contextos literarios y culturales. Así, la construcción de la ancianidad femenina incorpora estereotipos cómicosatíricos que evidencian la perspectiva romanocéntrica desde la que el género se reformula (Phaed.2.2 y 3.1). Por su parte, la debilidad atribuida a los ancianos (Phaed.1.15 y 1.21) -leída en contraposición con la fortaleza que su contemporáneo, Valerio Máximo, adjudica a la ancianidad modélica en sus exempla (V. Max. 8.13)- contribuye a la construcción de la máscara del fabulista como sujeto marginal (3. 9 y 3. epil.).
