A microactuator made from poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), a piezoelectric polymer, was fabricated to control the gas flow rate through a glass micronozzle. The actuator was formed by gluing together two PVDF sheets with opposite polarization directions. The sheets were covered with thin conducting films on one side, that were then used as electrodes to apply an electric field to move the valve. The actuator has a rectangular shape, 3 mm x 6 mm. The device was incorporated with a micronozzle fabricated by a powder blasting technique. Upon applying a DC voltage across the actuator electrodes, one sheet expands while the other contracts, generating an opening motion. A voltage of +300 V DC was used to open the device by moving the actuator 30 mu m, and a voltage of -200 V DC was used to close the device by moving the actuator 20 mu m lower than the relaxed position. Flow measurements were performed in a low-pressure vacuum system, maintaining the microvalve inlet pressure constant at 266 Pa. Tests carried out with the actuator in the open position and with a pressure ratio (inlet pressure divided by outlet pressure) of 0.5, indicated a flow rate of 0.36 sccm. In the closed position, and with a pressure ratio of 0.2, a flow rate of 0.32 sccm was measured.

The alternating conductivity, sigma*(f) = sigma'(f) + i sigma ''(f), of in situ polymerized polyaniline thin films doped with hydrochloric acid, deposited on top of an interdigitated gold line array previously deposited on glass substrates, were measured in the frequency (f) range between 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz and in the temperature range from 100 to 430 K. The results for sigma'(f) are typical of a disordered solid material: for frequencies lower than a certain hopping frequency gamma(hop), log[sigma'(f)] is frequency-independent rising almost linearly for in logf > gamma(hop). A master curve was thus obtained by plotting the real component of the conductivity using normalized scales sigma'(f)/sigma(dc) and f/gamma(hop) which is indicative of a single process operating in the whole frequency range. An expression encompassing the conduction through a disordered structure taken from previous random free energy barrier model for hopping carriers, as well a dielectric function to represent the capacitive behavior of the PAni was employed to fit the experimental results. The dielectric constant and activation energy for hopping carriers were obtained as function of the polymer doping level. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
NMR study of ion-conducting organic-inorganic nanocomposites poly(ethylene glycol) - Silica - LiClO4
Resumo:
Hybrid organic-inorganic ionic conductors, also called ormolytes, were obtained by dissolution of LiClO4 into silica/poly(ethylene glycol) matrices. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to probe the inorganic phase structure (Si-29) and the effects of the temperature and composition on the dynamic behavior of the ionic species (Li-7) and the polymer chains (H-1 and C-13). The NMR results between -100 and +90 degrees C show a strong correlation with ionic conductivity and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The results also demonstrate that the cation mobility is assisted by segmental motion of the polymer, which is in agreement with the results previously reported for pure poly(ethylene oxide), PEG, electrolytes.

The temperature dependence has been investigated for the photoinduced birefringence in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from the azocopolymer 4-[N- ethyl -N-(2-hydroxyethyl)] amino-2'-chloro-4'-nitroazobenzene (MMA-DR13) mixed with cadmium stearate. The buildup and relaxation of the birefringence in the range from 20 to 296 K were fitted with a Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) function, with a beta-value of 0.78-0.98 for the build-up and 0.18-0.27 for the decay. This is consistent with a distribution of time constants for the kinetics of the birefringence processes. The maximum birefringence increased with increasing temperature up to 120 K because the free volume fluctuation also increased with temperature. Above 120 K, the birefringence decreased with temperature as thermal diffusion dominates. In the latter range of temperature, an Arrhenius behavior is inferred for both build-up and decay of birefringence. In each case two activation energies were obtained: 0.8 and 5 kJ/mol for the build-up and 10 and 30 kJ/mol for the decay. The energies for the build-up are much lower than those associated with motion of the polymer chain, which means that the dynamics is governed by the orientation of the chromophores. For the decay, local motion of lateral groups of the polymer chains becomes important as the activation energies are within the range of gamma-relaxation energies. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. We report on the use of dynamic scale theory and fractal analyses in the Study of distinct growth stages of layer-by-layer (LBL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and a side-chain-substituted azobenzene copolymer (Ma-co-DR13). The LBL films were adsorbed oil glass substrates and characterized with atomic force microscopy with the Ma-co-DR13 at the top layer. The ganular morphology exhibited by the films allowed the observation of the growth process inside and outside the grains. The growth outside the grains was found to follow the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang model, with fractal dimensions of ca. 2.6. One could expect that inside the grains the morphology would be close to a Euclidian surface with fractal dimension of ca. 2 for any growth stage. The latter, however, was observed only for thicker films containing more than 10 bilayers. For thinner films the morphology was well described by a self-affine fractal. Such dependence of the growth behavior with the film thickness is associated with a more complete coverage of adsorption sites in thicker films due to diffusion of polymer molecules. In this work we investigate the effect from the solution concentration on aggregation in layer-by-layer (LBL) films of poly(omethoxyaniline) (POMA) alternated with poly(vinyl sulfonic acid). Films are adsorbed on hydrophilized glass substrates and characterized with UV-Vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The formation of aggregates is favored in more concentrated solutions, leading to an increase in the diameter of the domains. This is caused by stronger polymer-polymer interactions under high concentrations. The size of POMA aggregates in solution is estimated to be larger than in LBL films, which is surprising because one should expect aggregates from solution to coalesce into larger aggregates in the deposited films. This unexpected result may be explained by a swelling effect of aggregates in the aqueous POMA solutions, consistent with other reports in the literature which consider the aggregates in solution to be made up of smaller aggregates. Upon adsorption on a solid substrate to form the LBL film, a molecular reorganization probably takes place, resulting in smaller aggregates. It is also found that the size distribution of the POMA domains in the LBL films is determined by the concentration of the solution. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The polymer surface degradation and/or modification evolution of Teflon FEP and Mylar C films caused by a low energy electron beam were analyzed using a new method that consists in measuring the second crossover energy shift in the electronic emission curve. Upon prolonged irradiation, the second crossover energy shifts irreversibly to lower values in Teflon FEP but to higher values in Mylar C, indicating distinct mechanisms of surface degradation for the two polymers. The method represents a relatively inexpensive way to monitor early stages of surface degradation since the secondary electron emission comes from a maximum depth below the geometric surface of 100 mn in insulators. The adsorption process in layer-by-layer (LBL) films of poly(o-methoxyaniline) alternated with poly(vinyl sulfonic acid) is explained using the Avrami equation. This equation was used due to its mathematical simplicity and adequate description of experimental data in real polymer systems. The Avrami parameters are a convenient means to represent empirical data of crystallization, and if microscopic knowledge is available these parameters can also be associated with adsorption mechanisms. The growth of spherulites in the LBL films was studied as a function of time using atomic force microscopy and the data were used to estimate the number and radii of aggregates, from which the Avrami parameters were determined. We find that the adsorption mechanism may correspond to a tri dimensional, diffusion-controlled growth, with increasing nucleation rate, consistent with results from kinetics of adsorption.

The magnetic properties of doped pellets of poly(3-methylthiophene) showing room temperature ferromagnetic behaviour have been discussed in a previous article. The magnetic behaviour was attributed to a weak ferromagnetic phase, due to the superexchange interaction of polarons via the dopant anions. The Dzialoshinsky-Morya interaction among canted spins was proposed to explain the ferromagnetism. In this article the main conclusions of that work concerning the magnetic behaviour are revised. The basic assumption now is that the magnetic moments are spin 1/2 polarons that can interact antiferromagnetically and/or ferromagnetically. In the small crystalline regions of the polymer, which are identified with the polymer portion that remains ferromagnetic at room temperature, the interaction gives rise to S = 0 and 1 bipolarons and the S = 1 triplet state is lower in energy. In the disordered region, disorder will prevent the complete S = 1 and 0 coupling and bands of polarons ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically coupled will appear. Using this approach, all the magnetization data can be qualitatively explained, as well as the electron spin resonance data.

We report magnetic data of free standing films of poly( aniline) (PANI) protonated with a plasticizing di-ester of succinic acid. The data have been obtained using the electron spin resonance (ESR) technique at two different frequencies, X-band (9.4 GHz) and Q-band ( 34 GHz), on one hand, and by magnetization measurements in broad ranges of temperatures and magnetic fields on the other hand. All the data can be explained assuming a transition as a function of temperature from delocalized magnetic moments in the valence band to localized positive polarons in several antiferromagnetically correlated bands. By increasing the magnetic field, the magnetic properties are affected in several ways. An intra-band admixture of states occurs; it contributes to increase the spins' localization and finally promotes an antiferromagnetic-metamagnetic transition.

Two groups of hybrid organic-inorganic composites exhibiting ionic conduction properties, so called ORMOLYTES (organically modified electrolytes), have been prepared by the sol-gel process. The first group has been prepared from mixture of a lithium salt and 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane(IsoTrEOS),O,O′-bis(2-aminopropyl) polypropyleneglycol. These materials produce chemical bonds between the organic (polymer) and the inorganic (silica) phases. The second group has been prepared by an ultrasonic method from a mixture of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), polypropyleneglycol and a lithium salt. The organic and inorganic phases are not chemically bonded in these samples. The Li+ ionic conductivity, σ, of all these materials has been studied by AC impedance spectroscopy up to 100°C. Values of σ up to 10-6 Ω-1·cm-1 have been found at room temperature. A systematic study of the effects of lithium concentration, polymer chain length and the polymer to silica weight ratio on σ shows that there is a strong dependence of σ on the preparation conditions. The dynamic properties of the Li+ ion and the polymer chains as a function of temperature between -100 and 120°C were studied using 7Li solid-state NMR measurements. The ionic conductivity of both families are compared and particular attention is paid to the nature of the bonds between the organic and inorganic components.

Composites produced during the in situ chemical polymerization of aniline on top of a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film, in different conditions, were studied by open-circuit potential (Voc), ultraviolet-visible, and infrared spectroscopy, electrical conductivity measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The polymerization monitoring by Voc showed a maximum associated with the intermediate pernigraniline oxidation state and a final formation of polyaniline (PANI) in the doped emeraldine salt (ES) form. Furthermore, high electrical conductivity values were obtained for the PANI-ES coating prepared under selected conditions. A globular formation was observed for the doped PANI-ES coating with globules of sizes of the same order and same shape of the PET, demonstrating the influence of the substrate on the coating morphology.

Surface-relief gratings are photoinscribed on ionically adsorbed layer-by-layer (LBL) films of an azodye, Brilliant Yellow (BY), which was layered alternately with a polyelectrolyte. Photoinscription is performed by impinging an interference pattern of p- or s-polarized laser light with moderate intensity onto the LBL film, which is unlikely to cause thermal effects. Large-scale mass transport occurs due to the force associated with the field gradient of the light pattern. The ionic interactions between adjacent layers appear to provide the means for the chromophores to drag the polymer chains upon photoizomerization. LBL films were produced from two different polyelectrolytes and under two distinct pH values leading to markedly different film properties especially concerning photodegradation. Exposure to the laser light, for instance, leads to higher photodegradation in the poly(dimethyl diallylammonium chloride)/BY system, in comparison to the poly(allylamine hydrochloride)/BY films. Mass transport in the latter case is predominantly light-driven, which is consistent with the higher amplitude of modulation for p-polarized light (70 nm) compared to that caused by s-polarized light (18 nm). © 2003 Elsevier Ltd.
