In general, the exocrine glands of social insects are structures involved in the chemical communication associated with social life. Here, we report the discovery of an unknown tegumental gland that is present in the female imagoes of Cornitermes cumulans and occurs next to the well-developed tergal glands that have previously been described. The tegumental glands release their secretion in the intersegmental membrane and are composed of bicellular units, a secretory cell and a canal cell, that are closely located to the epidermal cells in the inferior part of the eighth and ninth tergites. The ultrastructure of the glandular cells showed abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum, suggesting that the secretion may be pheromonal, although its function is still unknown. These exocrine structures are facing the tergal glands, and we hypothesized that they act synergistically with the tergal glands to generate short-range attraction during tandem behavior. Microsc. The present study provides ultrastructural information about the acaricidal effects of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) on the ovaries of R. sanguineus engorged females. In general, the main damage caused in the oocytes was alteration in the shape of the cell and of the germinal vesicle, ring-shaped nucleolus, cytoplasmic vacuolation, and disorganization of the organelles and of the cell membranes (including the chorion), all of which indicate that these cells could be in the process of death. The results showed that azadirachtin would be an efficient acaricide agent for inhibiting and/or neutralizing the reproduction process of R. sanguineus females, impairing the reproductive ability of this species.

Achroia grisella exhibit dichotomous spermatogenesis producing two types of sperm, one is eupyrene that possesses nucleus, and the other is apyrene that lacks it. Transmission electron microscopy of spermatogenesis morphology is described considering sperm type which will appear at sonic point during insect development, and differences that mark the two types of sperm formation. The differences between them are only really visible during spermiogenesis even though they were determined before meiosis. Both forms were seen in the larval stage, but there is a little difference in the time of their appearance. Eupyrene cysts were seen from the 8(th) larval stage, whereas apyrene were only found after the 10(th) stage. In early insect development stages, eupyrene cysts predominate, but as the insect ages, they are overtaken by apyrene. Although some eupyrene cysts are still present in young adult testis, the majority are apyrene. As eupyrene sperm is formed, bundles migrate to the seminal vesicle therefore in early pupae eupyrene sperm are already present there whereas apyrene cells arrive later. The exact mechanism and determining factors responsible for apyrene sperm origin are still to be clarified. The probable causes of apyrene sperm appearance are discussed as well as its role in the sperm competition.

In the present study a comparative morphological analysis of the fat body cells of ant workers of the basal Attini species Cyphomyrmex rimosus and Mycetarotesparallelus, and the derived species Acromynnex disciger and Atta laevigata was conducted. The results revealed that the fat body is located mainly in the abdomen around organs (perivisceral) and near the integument (parietal). The main cells observed are spherical or polygonal trophocytes with a slightly rough surface. The oenocytes, another cell type found, are closely associated with trophocytes, and present a spherical or polygonal shape and a smoother surface. The morphometric analysis showed that the area of trophocytes and oenocytes of C rimosus and M parallelus is significantly smaller when compared to those of A. disciger and A. laevigata. In the cytoplasm of parietal and perivisceral trophocytes and oenocytes, electronlucent droplets (probably lipids) and electrondense granules (probably proteins) indicate the participation of these cells in the storage of these elements, while digestive vacuoles, residual bodies, and multivesicular bodies suggest a role in intracellular digestion. In perivisceral trophocytes and oenocytes of C rimosus, the presence of mitochondria, lamellar rough endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi complex suggests that these cells synthesize proteins. Based on these data, no significant differences were observed between the fat body cells of basal and derived ants, except regarding the larger size of trophocytes and oenocytes of the derived species A. disciger and A. laevigata.
