Neuroimaging techniques provide valuable tools for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease (AD), monitoring disease progression and evaluating responses to treatment. There is currently a wide array of techniques available including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and, for recording electrical brain activity, electroencephalography (EEG). The choice of technique depends on the contrast between tissues of interest, spatial resolution, temporal resolution, requirements for functional data and the probable number of scans required. For example, while PET, CT and MRI can be used to differentiate between AD and other dementias, MRI is safer and provides better contrast of soft tissues. Neuroimaging is a technique spanning many disciplines and requires effective communication between doctors requesting a scan of a patient or group of patients and those with technical expertise. Consideration and discussion of the most suitable type of scan and the necessary settings to achieve the best results will help ensure appropriate techniques are chosen and used effectively. Neuroimaging techniques are currently expanding understanding of the structural and functional changes that occur in dementia. Further research may allow identification of early neurological signs ofAD, before clinical symptoms are evident, providing the opportunity to test preventative therapies. CombiningMRI and machine learning techniques may be a powerful approach to improve diagnosis ofAD and to predict clinical outcomes.

The epidemiology of animal trypanosomosis around Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso, West Africa) benefited a lot in the last years from the progress of molecular tools. The two most used molecular techniques were the polymerase chain reaction for the diagnosis of the disease in cattle and the characterization of the trypanosomes in the host and the vector on one hand, and the microsatellite DNA polymorphism in tsetse flies to study the intraspecific genetic variability of the vector on the other hand. The results obtained in the Sideradougou area during a recent two year survey with these techniques, associated with many other georeferenced informations concerning vector and cattle distribution, natural environment, landuse, ground occupation, livestock management, were combined in a Geographical Information System. This new approach of a complex pathogenic system led to a better evaluation of the risk of trypanosome transmission.

Six hundred and eleven random-source dogs (338 male, 273 female) one year of age or older, from six sections of the city of Recife, Pernambuco, were examined antemortem for circulating microfilariae Dirofilaria immitis and Dipetalonema reconditum adult heartworm (D. immitis) antigen, and examined postmortem for adult heartworms. The prevalence of heartworm infection was 2.3% (14/611), as determined by necropsy for adult worms, and 1% (6/611) had circulating microfilariae of D. immitis; thus, 57.1% of the heartworm-infected dogs had occult infections. The results of serological testing indicated that 1.3% (8/611) of the dogs were positive for adult heartworm antigen. A total of 42 (6.9%) of the dogs had microfilariae of D. reconditum; 40 of these had only D. reconditum and two additional dogs had microfilariae of both species, D. immitis and D. reconditum.

A high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection survey was conducted in Lake Geneva, near the city of Lausanne, Switzerland, as part of a project for developing such seismic techniques. Using a single 48-channel streamer, the 3-D site with an area of 1200 m x 600 m was surveyed in 10 days. A variety of complex geologic structures (e.g. thrusts, folds, channel-fill) up to similar to150 m below the water bottom were obtained with a 15 in.(3) water gun. The 3-D data allowed the construction of an accurate velocity model and the distinction of five major seismic facies within the Lower Freshwater Molasse (Aquitanian) and the Quaternary sedimentary units. Additionally, the Plateau Molasse (PM) and Subalpine Molasse (SM) erosional surface, "La Paudeze" thrust fault (PM-SM boundary) and the thickness of Quaternary sediments were accurately delineated in 3-D.

The Institute of Public Health in Ireland publishes estimates and forecasts of the prevalence of chronic health conditions for national and subnational areas on the island of Ireland. The estimates and forecasts are based on statistical models of nationally representative health survey data that estimate the risk of having the condition. The risks of having the condition are then applied to population estimates and projections. The purpose of this document is to: 1. Compare IPH prevalence estimates with prevalence estimates from other health surveys on the island. 2. Highlight the methodological issues in comparing prevalence estimates from different surveys.

Insight into the function of sleep may be gained by studying animals in the ecological context in which sleep evolved. Until recently, technological constraints prevented electroencephalogram (EEG) studies of animals sleeping in the wild. However, the recent development of a small recorder (Neurologger 2) that animals can carry on their head permitted the first recordings of sleep in nature. To facilitate sleep studies in the field and to improve the welfare of experimental animals, herein, we test the feasibility of using minimally invasive surface and subcutaneous electrodes to record the EEG in barn owls. The EEG and behaviour of four adult owls in captivity and of four chicks in a nest box in the field were recorded. We scored a 24-h period for each adult bird for wakefulness, slow-wave sleep (SWS), and rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep using 4 s epochs. Although the quality and stability of the EEG signals recorded via subcutaneous electrodes were higher when compared to surface electrodes, the owls' state was readily identifiable using either electrode type. On average, the four adult owls spent 13.28 h awake, 9.64 h in SWS, and 1.05 h in REM sleep. We demonstrate that minimally invasive methods can be used to measure EEG-defined wakefulness, SWS, and REM sleep in owls and probably other animals.
