El presente ensayo sintetiza y analiza algunas de las consideraciones filosóficas en torno a la depredación animal vista como un problema ético, esto es,de incumbencia y acción para el hombre. Se examinarán algunas posiciones a favor de la acción del hombre para la preservación y cuidado de los animales, y otras que, al contrario, argumentan por la no intervención del humano en la vida de los animales y en el normal curso de la vida en la naturaleza. Finalmente, la autora defenderá su posición a favor del vegetarianismo como única intervención lícita por parte de los seres humanos para disminuir la depredación animal, mientras que rechazará la tesis del intervencionismo, que pretende detener toda clase de depredación en el reino animal.

Mycobacterium bovis is the etiological agent of tuberculosis in domestic and wild animals. Its involvement as a human pathogen has been highlighted again with the recent descriptions of transmission through dairy products (18), reactivation or primary infection in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients (5), and association with meat industry workers, animal keepers, or hunters (3). Strains resistant to antituberculous drugs (M. bovis is naturally resistant to pyrazinamide) pose an additional risk (2). Several studies have demonstrated that mutations in target genes are associated with resistance to antituberculous drugs (4, 7, 10, 11, 16). However, most of them have been developed in Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains and limited data are available regarding M. bovis isolates. The aim of this study was to characterize by sequencing the main genes involved in antibiotic resistance in two multidrug-resistant (MDR) M. bovis isolates in a human outbreak detected in a hospital in Madrid that subsequently spread to several countries (5, 6, 15). The isolates were resistant to 11 drugs, but only their rpoB and katG genes have been analyzed so far (1, 14). We studied the first (93/R1) and last (95/R4) M. bovis isolates of this nosocomial outbreak, characterized by spoligotyping as SB0426 (hexacode 63-5F-5E-7F-FF-60 in the database at www.mbovis.org) (1, 13). Several genes involved in resistance to isoniazid (katG, ahpC, inhA, and the oxyR-ahpC intergenic region), rifampin (rpoB), streptomycin (rrs, rpsL), ethambutol (embB), and quinolones (gyrA) were studied. These genes, or fragments of genes, were amplified and sequenced as previously described (12). The sequence analysis revealed polymorphisms in five (ahpC, rpoB, rpsL, embB, and gyrA) out of nine analyzed genes (Table 1). Nucleotide substitutions in four genes cause a change in the encoded amino acid. Two additional synonymous mutations in ahpC and rpsL differentiated the first and last isolates from the outbreak.

Live animal trade is considered a major mode of introduction of viruses from enzootic foci into disease-free areas. Due to societal and behavioural changes, some wild animal species may nowadays be considered as pet species. The species diversity of animals involved in international trade is thus increasing. This could benefit pathogens that have a broad host range such as arboviruses. The objective of this study was to analyze the risk posed by live animal imports for the introduction, in the European Union (EU), of four arboviruses that affect human and horses: Eastern and Western equine encephalomyelitis, Venezuelan equine encephalitis and Japanese encephalitis. Importation data for a five-years period (2005-2009, extracted from the EU TRACES database), environmental data (used as a proxy for the presence of vectors) and horses and human population density data (impacting the occurrence of clinical cases) were combined to derive spatially explicit risk indicators for virus introduction and for the potential consequences of such introductions. Results showed the existence of hotspots where the introduction risk was the highest in Belgium, in the Netherlands and in the north of Italy. This risk was higher for Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) than for the three other diseases. It was mainly attributed to exotic pet species such as rodents, reptiles or cage birds, imported in small-sized containments from a wide variety of geographic origins. The increasing species and origin diversity of these animals may have in the future a strong impact on the risk of introduction of arboviruses in the EU.

Similar to what occurs in Human Medicine, also in Veterinary Medicine, the prevalence of oncological diseases has significantly increased. The evolution of Veterinary Medicine, in last decades has brought changes in clinical paradigms, particularly concerning the relationship with the animal and also with the owner. More than any other specialty, members of the Veterinary Medical Team that work in the oncology field, are unavoidably forced to break bad news. This paper proposes the adaptation of the ABCDE model from Human Medicine to Veterinary Medicine. The adaptation of the ABCDE model for Veterinary Medicine improves communication with the owner and offers all the members of the Veterinary Medical Team better communication skills.

Aim Positive regional correlations between biodiversity and human population have been detected for several taxonomic groups and geographical regions. Such correlations could have important conservation implications and have been mainly attributed to ecological factors, with little testing for an artefactual explanation: more populated regions may show higher biodiversity because they are more thoroughly surveyed. This study aimed to identify the parameters related to the expression of the reactivity in horses during handling and based on that proposed and validated a scale of composite measure reactivity score to characterize horse's reactivity. To this end, the first stage (S1) proposed the scale and the second (S2) validated it. In S1, 364 Lusitano horses were evaluated, 188 were adult breeding mares (4–12 years old), and 176 were foals (males/females, aged from 2 months to 2 years). During hooves trimming, vermifuge application, palpation scores were assigned to behaviors of movement, ears and eyes position, breathing, vocalization, and urination. A response parameter called reactivity was attributed to each animal, ranging from score 1 (nonreactive/calm) to score 4 (very reactive/aggressive). The verification of the possible parameters (age, behavior), which explains the response parameter (reactivity), was taken using ordinal proportional odds model. Movement, breathing, ears and eyes position, vocalization, and age appear to explain the reactivity of horses during handling (P < .01). Therefore, based on these parameters, it was possible to propose two scales of composite measure reactivity score: one to characterize the mares and another the foals. On S2, the proposed scale was validated by the simultaneous application of Forced Human Approach Test, another commonly used test to evaluate the reactivity in horses, with a correlation of 0.97 (P < .05). The assessment of the reactivity of horses during handling by a composite measure reactivity score scale is valid, and easy to apply, without disrupting daily routine and override the impact of individual differences.

This paper is based on the experiences of the author, who has worked in the various levels of the Venezuelan educational system. This has been a very important platform to understand the ideas of education and human development within the Venezuelan institutionality in the educational field. The idea of education that we have, as teachers, should be rethought in order to consider the personal stories of those who share with us their time, interests and willingness: children, young people or adults, all with particular identities, differences and coincidences. The teachers, the schools and the State cannot consider an education for someone they do not know. In this sense, we provide some reflections resulting from our ethnographic work, based on the school life, interviews, class analysis, observations, and stories, among others. Our thoughts are classified as formation, hope, dialogue, attitude, and school life.
