Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate mouth-breathing and nasal-breathing children prior to surgical intervention and 28 months postoperatively, comparing the occlusal features obtained pre- and postoperatively through orthodontic study costs. Methods: The mouth-breathing (MB) group consists of 33 MB children who underwent surgery and presented a nasal-breathing (NB) pattern after surgery The control group comprised 22 NB children. The orthodontic examinations were accomplished prior to surgery (77) and an average of 28 months postoperatively (T2). Results: At T1, the MB and NB children presented no statistically significant difference in any analyzed occlusal features and measurements. At T2, the MB presented larger overjet comparing to NB children (P<.05). MB and NB groups presented statistically similar results (P>.05) concerning intercanine and intermolor distances, second primary molar terminal plane and canine relationship, overbite, crossbite, and open bite. From T1 to T2, the MB and NB groups showed a statistically significant difference in the molar terminal plane. Conclusion: Neither the breathing pattern nor the surgery had any effect on occlusal features in 3- to 6-year-olds. Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic human mycosis caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (P. brasiliensis), an imperfect dimorphic fungus whose conidia are its infective form. Mice genetically selected for maximum (AIRmax) and minimum (AIRmin) acute inflammatory response were used as experimental paracoccidioidomycosis models. The animals were intraperitoneally inoculated with P. brasiliensis (strain 18) and killed 6, 12 and 24 hours or 3, 7 and 14 days after infection. In these periods, fragments from their spleen, liver and lung were removed for evaluation of the infection level by fungal cells, assessment of macrophagic activity by peritoneal and splenic macrophages - through the determination of nitric oxide (NO) concentrations and production of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines of lung and spleen homogenate supernatants. In the present study, it was observed that AIRmax lineages presented greater control of the infectious process than the AIRmin ones. Regarding NO production, AIRmax animals produced more metabolites in late periods, what may help control the infectious process. Concerning cytokine production, it was observed that the production of INF-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-1, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-12 were increased in AIRmax lineages in most analyzed organs and periods, thus contributing to the greater resistance exhibited by such lineages against infection, except for IL-4 and IL-10 that showed decreased production in AIRmax lineage, reproducing its suppressive biological effect. From these results, it was observed that the AIRmax lineage was more effective in controlling the infectious process, with an important involvement of the analyzed cytokines. These findings are probably related to the genetically selected factors involved in the acute inflammatory response.

This study examines the effects of lung inflation/deflation with and without CO2 on the entire population of pulmonary receptors in the vagus nerve in two species of snakes and two species of turtles. We asked the question, how does the response of the entire mixed population of pulmonary stretch receptors (PSR) and intrapulmonary chemoreceptors (IPC) in species possessing both differ from that in species with only PSR? This was studied under conditions of artificial ventilation with the secondary goal of extending observations on the presence/absence of IPC to a further three species. Our results indirectly illustrate the presence of IPC in the Burmese python and South American rattlesnake but not the side necked turtle, adding support to the hypothesis that IPC first arose in diapsid reptiles. In both species of snake, CO2-sensitive discharge (presumably from IPC) predominated almost to the exclusion of CO2-insensitive discharge (presumably arising from PSR) while the opposite was true for both species of turtle. The data suggest that for animals breathing air under conditions of normal metabolism there is little to distinguish between the discharge profiles of the total population of receptors arising from the lungs in the different groups. Interestingly, however, under conditions of elevated environmental CO2 most volume-related feedback from the lungs is abolished in the two species of snakes, while under conditions of elevated metabolic CO2, it is estimated that volume feedback from the lungs would be enhanced in these same species.

To study the effects of environmental hypercarbia on ventilation in snakes, particularly the anomalous hyperpnea that is seen when CO(2) is removed from inspired gas mixtures (post-hypercapnic hyperpnea), gas mixtures of varying concentrations of CO(2) were administered to South American rattlesnakes, Crotalus durissus, breathing through an intact respiratory system or via a tracheal cannula by-passing the upper airways. Exposure to environmental hypercarbia at increasing levels, up to 7% CO(2), produced a progressive decrease in breathing frequency and increase in tidal volume. The net result was that total ventilation increased modestly, up to 5% CO(2) and then declined slightly on 7% CO(2). on return to breathing air there was an immediate but transient increase in breathing frequency and a further increase in tidal volume that produced a marked overshoot in ventilation. The magnitude of this post-hypercapnic hyperpnea was proportional to the level of previously inspired CO(2). Administration of CO(2) to the lungs alone produced effects that were identical to administration to both lungs and upper airways and this effect was removed by vagotomy. Administration of CO(2) to the upper airways alone was without effect. Systemic injection of boluses of CO(2)-rich blood produced an immediate increase in both breathing frequency and tidal volume. These data indicate that the post-hypercapnic hyperpnea resulted from the removal of inhibitory inputs from pulmonary receptors and suggest that while the ventilatory response to environmental hypercarbia in this species is a result of conflicting inputs from different receptor groups, this does not include input from upper airway receptors.

The tegu lizard Tupinambis merianae exhibits an episodic ventilatory pattern when dormant at 17 degrees C but a uniform ventilatory pattern when dormant at 25 degrees C. At 17 degrees C, ventilatory episodes were composed of 1-22 breaths interspaced by non-ventilatory periods lasting 1.8-26min, Dormancy at the higher body temperature was accompanied by higher rates of O-2 consumption and ventilation. The increase in ventilation was due only to increases in breathing frequency with no change observed in tidal volume. The air convection requirement for O-2 did not differ at the two body temperatures. The respiratory quotient was 0.8 at 17 degrees C and 1.0 at 25 degrees C. We found no consistent relationship between expired gas composition and the start/end of the ventilatory period during episodic breathing at 17 degrees C. However, following non-ventilatory periods of increasing duration, there was an increase in the pulmonary O-2 extraction that was not coupled to an equivalent increase in elimination of CO2 from the lungs. None of the changes in the variables studied could alone explain the initiation/termination of episodic ventilation in the tegus, suggesting that breathing episodes are shaped by a complex interaction between many variables. The estimated oxidative cost of breathing in dormant tegus at 17 degrees C was equivalent to 52.3% of the total metabolic rate, indicating that breathing is the most costly activity during dormancy.

Kinetics of osmotic dehydration (OD) and effects of sucrose impregnation on thermal air-drying of pumpkin slices were investigated. A simplified model based on the solution of Fick's Law was used to estimate effective diffusion coefficients during OD and air-drying. In order to take into account shrinkage, average and variable thicknesses were considered. Pumpkin slices were dehydrated in sucrose solutions (40%, 50% and 60%, w/w, 27 degrees C. The effective water diffusion coefficients were higher than the sucrose, and low diffusivity dependence with solution concentration was observed. Samples non-treated and pre-treated in 60% osmotic solutions during one hour were dried in a hot-air-dryer at 50 and 70 degrees C (2 m/s) until equilibrium was achieved. Pre-treatment enhanced mass transfer during air-drying. Great volume reduction was observed in pre and non-treated dried samples. Using variable thickness in the model diminished the relative deviations between predicted and experimental OD and drying data. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Studies of cooking-generated NO2 effects are rare in occupational epidemiology. In the present study, we evaluated the lung function of professional cooks exposed to NO2 in hospital kitchens. We performed spirometry in 37 cooks working in four hospital kitchens and estimated the predicted FVC, FEV1 and FEF25-75, based on age, sex, race, weight, and height, according to Knudson standards. NO2 measurements were obtained for 4 consecutive days during 4 different periods at 20-day intervals in each kitchen. Measurements were performed inside and outside the kitchens, simultaneously using Palm diffusion tubes. A time/exposure indicator was defined as representative of the cumulative exposure of each cook. No statistically significant effect of NO2 exposure on FVC was found. Each year of work as a cook corresponded to a decrease in predicted FEV1 of 2.5% (P = 0.046) for the group as a whole. When smoking status and asthma were included in the analysis the effect of time/exposure decreased about 10% and lost statistical significance. on predicted FEF25-75, a decrease of 3.5% (P = 0.035) was observed for the same group and the inclusion of controllers for smoking status and asthma did not affect the effects of time/exposure on pulmonary function parameter. After a 10-year period of work as cooks the participants of the study may present decreases in both predicted FEV1 and FEF25-75 that can reach 20 and 30%, respectively. The present study showed small but statistically significant adverse effects of gas stove exposure on the lung function of professional cooks.

MATERIAL E MÉTODOS: em função das relações anatomofuncionais do osso hióide com o complexo craniofacial, realizou-se avaliação cefalométrica da posição do osso hióide em relação ao padrão respiratório. A amostra consistiu de 53 crianças, gênero feminino, com idades médias de 10 anos, sendo 28 respiradoras nasais e 25, bucais. As medidas cefalométricas horizontais, verticais e angulares foram utilizadas com a finalidade de determinar a posição do osso hióide. Estabeleceu-se uma comparação entre os grupos por meio do teste t de student, bem como correlação de Pearson entre as variáveis. RESULTADOS: Observou-se que não ocorreram diferenças estatísticas significativas para a posição mandibular e posição do osso hióide e o tipo do padrão respiratório. No Triângulo Hióideo, o coeficiente de correlação de 0,40 foi significativo entre AA-ENP (distância entre vértebra atlas e espinha nasal posterior) e C3-H (distância entre a terceira vértebra cervical e osso hióide) demonstrando uma relação positiva entre os limites ósseos do espaço aéreo superior e inferior. Para as medidas cranianas sugeriu-se uma relação entre a posição do osso hióide com a morfologia mandibular. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados permitiram concluir que o osso hióide mantém uma posição estável, provavelmente, para garantir as proporções corretas das vias aéreas e não depende do padrão respiratório predominante.
