The shape of the interface of a drop of liquid held by surface tension forces between two solid disks,a liquid bridge, depends on the geometry of the supporting disks, the volume of liquid and the external forces acting on the drop. Therefore, once the geometry of the supporting disks and the volume of liquid are fixed, and assuming that the value of the surface tension is known, a way to measure such external forces could be by measuring the deformation of the liquid bridge interface.

There is a self-similar solution for the stability limits of long, almost cylindrical liquid bridges between equal disks subjected to both axial and lateral accelerations. The stability limits depend on only two variables; the so-called reduced axial, and lateral Bond numbers. A novel experimental setup that involved rotating a horizontal cylindrical liquid bridge about a vertical axis of rotation was designed to test the stability limits predicted by the self-similar solution. Analytical predictions compared well with both numerical and experimental results.

An experimental apparatus to study the breaking process of axisymmetric liquid bridges has been developed, and the breaking sequences of a large number of liquid bridge configurations at minimum-volume stability limit have been analyzed. Experimental results show that very close to the breaking moment the neck radius of the liquid bridge varies as t1/3, where t is the time to breakage, irrespective of the value of the distance between the solid disks that support the liquid column.

A numerical method has been developed to determine the stability limits for liquid bridges held between noncircular supporting disks and the application to a configuration with a circular and an elliptical disk subjected to axial acceleration has been made. The numerical method led to results very different from the available analytical solution which has been revisited and a better approximation has been obtained. It has been found that just retaining one more term in the asymptotic analysis the solution reproduces the real behavior of the configuration and the numerical results.

Photovoltaic tweezers are a promising tool to place and move particles on the surface of a photovoltaic material in a controlled way. To exploit this new technique it is necessary to accurately know the electric field created by a specific illumination on the surface of the crystal and above it. This paper describes a numerical algorithm to obtain this electric field generated by several relevant light patterns, and uses them to calculate the electrophoretic potential acting over neutral, polarizable particles in the proximity of the crystal. The results are compared to experiments carried out in LiNbO3 with good overall agreement.

This paper reports on the thermal behavior and mechanical properties of nanocomposites based on unsaturated polyester resin (UP) modified with poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) and reinforced with an organically modified clay (cloisite 30B). To optimize the dispersion of 30B and the mixing of PCL in the UP resin, two different methods were employed to prepare crosslinked UP–PCL-30B hybrid nanocomposites. Besides, two samples of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) of different molecular weight (PCL2: Mn = 2.103g.mol−1 and PCL50: Mn = 5.104g.mol−1) were used at several concentrations (4, 6, 10 wt%). The 30B concentration was 4 wt% in all the nanocomposites. The morphology of the samples was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analysis of X-ray patterns reveals that intercalated structures have been found for all ternary nanocomposites, independently of the molecular weight, PCL concentration and the preparation method selected. A slight rise of the glass transition temperature, Tg, is observed in UP/PCL/4%30B ternary nanocomposites regarding to neat UP. The analysis of the tensile properties of the ternary (hybrid) systems indicates that UP/4%PCL2/4%30B nanocomposite improves the tensile strength and elongation at break respect to the neat UP while the Young modulus remains constant

A new high-resolution code for the direct numerical simulation of a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers over a flat plate has been developed. Its purpose is to simulate a wide range of Reynolds numbers from Reθ = 300 to 6800 while showing a linear weak scaling up to 32,768 cores in the BG/P architecture. Special attention has been paid to the generation of proper inflow boundary conditions. The results are in good agreement with existing numerical and experimental data sets.

Successful micro and nano-particle patterning on iron doped lithium niobate waveguides using photovoltaic fields is reported. This technique previously used in bulk crystals is here applied to waveguide configuration. Well defined particle patterns are obtained using two types of planar waveguides (by proton exchanged and swift heavy ion irradiation) and metallic and dielectric neutral particles. The use of waveguide configuration has allowed a reduction of the light exposure time until 3 s, two orders of magnitude smaller than typical values used in bulk.

1D and 2D patterning of uncharged micro- and nanoparticles via dielectrophoretic forces on photovoltaic z-cut Fe:LiNbO3 have been investigated for the first time. The technique has been successfully applied with dielectric micro-particles of CaCO3 (diameter d = 1-3 μm) and metal nanoparticles of Al (d = 70 nm). At difference with previous experiments in x- and y-cut, the obtained patterns locally reproduce the light distribution with high fidelity. A simple model is provided to analyse the trapping process. The results show the remarkably good capabilities of this geometry for high quality 2D light-induced dielectrophoretic patterning overcoming the important limitations presented by previous configurations.

There is a well-distinguished group of asteroids for which the roto-translational cou-pling is known to have a non-negligible eect in the long-term. The study of such asteroids suggests the use of specialized propagation techniques, where perturbation methods make their best. The techniques from which the special regularization method DROMO is derived, have now been extended to the attitude dynamics, with equally remarkable results in terms of speed and accuracy, thus making the combination of these algorithms specially. well-suited to deal with the propagation of bodies with strong attitude coupling.

Numerical simulations of flow surrounding a synthetic jet actuating device are presented. By modifying a dynamic mesh technique available in OpenFoam-a well-documented open-source solver for fluid dynamics, detailed computations of the sinusoidal motion of the synthetic jet diaphragm were possible. Numerical solutions were obtained by solving the two dimensional incompressible viscous N-S equations, with the use of a second order implicit time marching scheme and a central finite volume method for spatial discretization in both streamwise and crossflow directions. A systematic parametric study is reported here, in which the external Reynolds number, the diaphragm amplitude and frequency, and the slot dimensions are varied.

Direct numerical simulations are performed to analyze the three-dimensional instability of flows over three-dimensional cavities. The flow structures at different Reynolds numbers are investigated by using the spectral-element solver nek5000. As the Reynolds number increasing, the lateral wall effects become more important, the recirculation zone shrinks, the front vortex increases and the flow structure inside of the cavity becomes more complex. Results show that the flow bifurcates from a steady state to an oscillatory regime beyond a value of Reynolds number Re = 1100.

The paper provides a method applicable for the determination of flight loads for maneuvering aircraft, in which aerodynamic loads are calculated based on doublet lattice method, which contains three primary steps. Firstly, non-dimensional stability and control derivative coefficients are obtained through solving unsteady aerodynamics in subsonic flow based on a doublet lattice technical. These stability and control derivative coefficients are used in second step. Secondly, the simulation of aircraft dynamic maneuvers is completed utilizing fourth order Runge-Kutta method to solve motion equations in different maneuvers to gain response parameters of aircraft due to the motion of control surfaces. Finally, the response results calculated in the second step are introduced to the calculation of aerodynamic loads. Thus, total loads and loads distribution on different components of aircraft are obtained. According to the above method, abrupt pitching maneuvers, rolling maneuvers and yawing maneuvers are investigated respectively.

The unsteady aerodynamics of low pressure turbine vibrating airfoils in flap mode is studied in detail using a frequency domain linearized Navier-Stokes solver. Both the travelling-wave and influence coefficient formulations of the problem are used to highlight key aspects of the physics and understand different trends such as the effect of reduced frequency and Mach number. The study is focused in the low-reduced frequency regime which is of paramount relevance for the design of aeronautical low-pressure turbines and compressors. It is concluded that the effect of the Mach number on the unsteady pressure phase can be neglected in first approximation and that the unsteadiness of the vibrating and adjacent airfoils is driven by vortex shedding mechanisms. Finally a simple model to estimate the work-per-cycle as a function of the reduced frequency and Mach Number is provided. The edge-wise and torsion modes are presented in less detail but it is shown that acoustic waves are essential to explain its behaviour. The non-dimensional work-per-cycle of the edge-wise mode shows a large dependence with the Mach number while in the torsion mode a large number of airfoils is needed to reconstruct the work-per-cycle departing from the influence coefficients.
