meso-Tetraphenylporphyrin and its metal [zinc(II) and copper(II)] derivatives form both inter and intramolecular complexes with 5,5′-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB). The nature of interaction is predominantly charge transfer (CT) in origin, with the porphyrin functioning as a II-donor and DTNB as an acceptor. Among the covalently linked intramolecular systems, the magnitude of CT interaction varies with the position (of one of the aryl groups of the porphyrin) to which DTNB is attached as ortho meta > para. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence studies revealed electron transfer to be the dominant pathway for the fluorescence quenching in these systems. Steady-state photolysis experiments probed using EPR and optical absorption studies have shown that electron transfer (from the excited singlet state of the porphyrin) to DTNB results in the formation of thiyl radical and production of free thiolate anion. It is found that the products of electrochemical reduction of covalently linked porphyrin-DTNB systems are different from those observed for the photochemical studies.

Employing aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide (70%) as an inexpensive reagent a useful methodology for the regioselective and chemoselective deprotection of terminal acetonide groups in aqueous medium is developed. A variety of acetonide derivatives on reaction with aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide in water:tert-butanol (1:1) furnish the corresponding acetonide deprotected diols in good yields. A large number of acid labile protecting functional groups and other functional moieties were found to be unaffected under the conditions employed for the present deprotection. This method has been successfully applied to sugar derivatives.

Epoxy-terminated polystyrene has been synthesized by radical polymerization using alpha-(t-butylperoxymethyl) styrene (TPMS) as the chain transfer agent. The chain transfer constants were found to be 0.66 and 0.80 at 60 and 70 degrees C, respectively. The presence of epoxy end groups was confirmed by functional group modification of epoxide to aldehyde by treatment with BF3.Et(2)O. Thermal stability of TPMS was followed by differential scanning calorimetry and iodimetry. Thermal decomposition of TPMS in toluene follows first order kinetics with an activation energy of 23 kcal/mol. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

C10H10O4, M(r) = 194.19, monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 7.089 (1), b = 11.361 (1), c = 11.656 (1) angstrom, beta = 100.45 (3)-degrees, V = 922.92 (1) angstrom 3, Z = 4, D(m) = 1.410 (5), D(x) = 1.397 Mg m-3, lambda(Cu K-alpha) = 1.5418 angstrom, mu(Cu K-alpha) = 0.89 mm-1, T = 300 K, F(000) = 408, final R = 0.057 for 1701 observed reflections. The molecule is almost planar, with O(9) and O(12) of the acetyl groups deviating by 0.074 (1) and 0.071 (2) angstrom from the mean plane of the benzene ring. The bond lengths and bond angles of the benzene ring are normal. There are intramolecular hydrogen bonds between O(9) and H(14) and between O(12) and H(13); there are no intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The molecules are packed in layers parallel to the ac plane and are held together essentially by van der Waals interactions.

The two low-temperature phase transitions in dicalcium barium propionate have been investigated by H-1 NMR relaxation (T-1,T-2,T-1 rho) studies carried out at a Larmor frequency of 300 MHz. The T-1 and T-1 rho results indicate the presence of C2H5 dynamics near these two transitions. We infer from the T-1 rho results that the slow motions of the C2H5 groups are responsible for the II-III transition.

We find that at a mole fraction 0.05 of DMSO (x(DMSO) = 0.05) in aqueous solution, a linear hydrocarbon chain of intermediate length (n = 30-40) adopts the most stable collapsed conformation. In pure water, the same chain exhibits an intermittent oscillation between the collapsed and the extended coiled conformations. Even when the mole fraction of DMSO in the bulk is 0.05, the concentration of the same in the first hydration layer around the hydrocarbon of chain length 30 (n = 30) is as large as 17%. Formation of such hydrophobic environment around the hydrocarbon chain may be viewed as the reason for the collapsed conformation gaining additional stability. We find a second anomalous behavior to emerge near x(DMSO) = 0.15, due to a chain-like aggregation of the methyl groups of DMSO in water that lowers the relative concentration of the DMSO molecules in the hydration layer. We further find that as the concentration of DMSO is gradually increased, it progressively attains the extended coiled structure as the stable conformation. Although Flory-Huggins theory (for binary mixture solvent) fails to predict the anomaly at x(DMSO) = 0.05, it seems to capture the essence of the anomaly at 0.15.

A novel vinyl ether, 2,2-dimethyl-4-vinyioxymethyl-1,3-dioxol (DMVMD), that has a dimethyl ketal protected vicinal diol functionality was synthesizied from readily available starting materials, such as glycerol, acetone and acetylene. Copolymerisation of DMVMD with maleic anhydride (MAH) in various molar ratios was carried out using a free radical initiator. The composition of the copolymer was established by conductometric titration, and was found to be 1:1 irrespective of the monomer feed composition thus establishing its alternating nature. The copolymer formed clear free standing films upon solvent casting which became insoluble upon prolonged exposure to ambeint atmosphere. The insolubility is ascribed to moisture induced crosslinking. A plausible mechanism for the crosslinking involves the hydrolysis of some of the anhydride groups, followed by acid catalysed deketalization, and then by the reaction of the alcoholic groups, thus generated, with the residual anhydride to give ester crosslinks. This hypothesis was confirmed both by model reactions and insitu FT-IR studies.

A new class of epoxy resins having N-N bonds in their structure has been synthesized by reacting N,N'-aliphatic dicarboxyl bis(hydrazones) (the aldehyde/ketone derivatives of malonic, adipic, and sebacic dihydrazides) with epichlorohydrin. The reactivity of the[GRAPHICS] protons as a function of the substituent group and the number of methylene spacer groups present in the hydrazone has been examined. The resins obtained have been characterized by elemental and epoxy equivalent analyses and IR and NMR spectra. All these resins are found to have adequate viscosity and cure easily with amine curatives at elevated temperatures. Relevant properties for their use as binders in propellant formulations, such as thermal stability, heat of combustion, density, temperature dependence of viscosity, and mechanical strength of the composites, have been evaluated. We give an elementary treatment of the defining representation and Lie algebra of the three-dimensional unitary unimodular group SU(3). The geometrical properties of the Lie algebra, which is an eight dimensional real Linear vector space, are developed in an SU(3) covariant manner. The f and d symbols of SU(3) lead to two ways of 'multiplying' two vectors to produce a third, and several useful geometric and algebraic identities are derived. The axis-angle parametrization of SU(3) is developed as a generalization of that for SU(2), and the specifically new features are brought out. Application to the dynamics of three-level systems is outlined.

The molecular structure of 1,1'-bi(acenaphthen-1-ylidene)-2,2'-dione 1, a potential building-block for the synthesis of fullerene fragments, has been investigated by X-ray crystallography and semi-empirical (AM1 and PM3) calculations. There is a good agreement between the calculated and crystal structure which is essentially planar and has E-configuration. In the solid state, molecules of 1 pack in an interesting manner as corrugated sheets sustained by a network of C-H ... O hydrogen bonds and resulting in the formation of tetrameric loops. While steric factors limit the reactivity of the carbonyl groups in 1, the ene double bond of the ene-dione moiety present in it exhibits propensity toward [4 + 2]-cycloadditions to furnish novel and highly compressed polycycles 8-10.

The crystal structure of the saccharide-free form of the basic form of winged-bean agglutinin (WBAI) has been solved by the molecular-replacement method and refined at 2.3 Angstrom resolution The final R factor is 19.74b for all data in the resolution range 8.0-2.3 Angstrom. The asymmetric unit contains two half-dimers, each located on a crystallographic twofold axis. The structure of the saccharide-free form is compared with that of the complex of WBAI wi th methyl-alpha-D-galactoside. The complex is composed of two dimers in the asymmetric unit. The intersubunit interactions in the dimer are nearly identical in the two structures The binding site of the saccharide-free structure contains three ordered water molecules at positions similar to those of the hydroxyl groups of the carbohydrate which an hydrogen bonded to the protein. Superposition of the saccharide-binding sites of the two structures shows that the major changes involve expulsion of these ordered water molecules and a shift of about 0.6 Angstrom of the main-chain atoms of the variable loop.

Several pi-electron rich fluorescent aromatic compounds containing trimethylsilylethynyl functionality have been synthesized by employing Sonogashira coupling reaction and they were characterized fully by NMR (H-1, C-13)/IR spectroscopy. Incorporation of bulky trimethylsilylethynyl groups on the peripheral of the fluorophores prevents self-quenching of the initial intensity through pi-pi interaction and thereby maintains the spectroscopic stability in solution. These compounds showed fluorescence behavior in chloroform solution and were used as selective fluorescence sensors for the detection of electron deficient nitroaromatics. All these fluorophores showed the largest quenching response with high selectivity for nitroaromatics among the various electron deficient aromatic compounds tested. Quantitative analysis of the fluorescence titration profile of 9,10-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl) anthracene with picric acid provided evidence that this particular fluorophore detects picric acid even at ppb level. A sharp visual detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene was observed upon subjecting 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (trimethylsilylethynyl) pyrene fluorophore to increasing quantities of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene in chloroform. Furthermore, thin film of the fluorophores was made by spin coating of a solution of 1.0 x 10(-3) M in chloroform or dichloromethane on a quartz plate and was used for the detection of vapors of nitroaromatics at room temperature. The vapor-phase sensing experiments suggested that the sensing process is reproducible and quite selective for nitroaromatic compounds. Selective fluorescence quenching response including a sharp visual color change for nitroaromatics makes these fluorophores as promising fluorescence sensory materials for nitroaromatic compounds (NAC) with a detection limit of even ppb level as judged with picric acid.

Biodiversity surveys were conducted in 13, 10x50 m(2) plots located between 1400 to 3100 in abode mean sea level in a range of habitats in temperate mixed Oak and Coniferous forests through sub-alpine to the alpine grasslands in Chamoli district of Uttaranchal state in the Indian Garhwal Himalaya. Cross-taxon congruence in biodiversity (alpha-diversity and beta-diversity) across macrolichens, mosses, liverworts, woody plants (shrubs and trees) and ants was investigated, so as to examine the extent to which these group, of organisms can function as Surrogates for each other. Although woody plants provided a major substrate for macrolichens and mosses, there was no species-specific association between them. Woody plant species richness was highly positively correlated with mosses (r(2) = 0.63, P < 0.001) but the relationship, as not particularly very strong with lichens and liverworts. While there was a significant correlation in the species turnover (β-diversity) of macrolichens with mosses (r(2) = 0.21 P < 0.005). the relationship was relatively poor with the woody plants. On the other hand. negative correlations emerged in the species richness of ants with those of macrolichens, mosses and woody plants (r(2) = -0.44 P < 0.05). but most of the complementarity (turnover) relationships among them were positive, Since diversity between taxonomic hierarchies within the group was consistently significantly positively correlated in all these taxa, the higher taxonomic categories Such as genus and family may be employed as surrogates for rapid assessment and monitoring of species diversity, Although no single group other than macrolichens has emerged as a good indicator of changes in species richness in all other groups, some concordant relationships between them conform to the hypothesis that species assemblages of certain taxonomic groups could still be used as surrogates for efficient monitoring of species diversity in other groups whose distribution may further predict the importance of conserving overall biodiversity in landscapes such as the Garhwal Himalaya. Background. Respiratory irregularity has been previously reported in patients with panic disorder using time domain measures. However, the respiratory signal is not entirely linear and a few previous studies used approximate entropy (APEN), a measure of regularity of time series. We have been studying APEN and other nonlinear measures including a measure of chaos, the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) of heart rate time series, in some detail. In this study, we used these measures of respiration to compare normal controls (n = 18) and patients with panic disorder (n = 22) in addition to the traditional time domain measures of respiratory rate and tidal volume. Methods: Respiratory signal was obtained by the Respitrace system using a thoracic and an abdominal belt, which was digitized at 500 Hz. Later, the time series were constructed at 4 Hz, as the highest frequency in this signal is limited to 0.5 Hz. We used 256 s of data (1,024 points) during supine and standing postures under normal breathing and controlled breathing at 12 breaths/min. Results: APEN was significantly higher in patients in standing posture during normal as well as controlled breathing (p = 0.002 and 0.02, respectively). LLE was also significantly higher in standing posture during normal breathing (p = 0.009). Similarly, the time domain measures of standard deviations and the coefficient of variation (COV) of tidal volume (TV) were significantly higher in the patient group (p = 0.02 and 0.004, respectively). The frequency of sighs was also higher in the patient group in standing posture (p = 0.02). In standing posture, LLE (p < 0.05) as well as APEN (p < 0.01) contributed significantly toward the separation of the two groups over and beyond the linear measure, i.e. the COV of TV. Conclusion: These findings support the previously described respiratory irregularity in patients with panic disorder and also illustrate the utility of nonlinear measures such as APEN and LLE as additional measures toward a better understanding of the abnormalities of respiratory physiology in similar patient populations as the correlation between LLE, APEN and some of the time domain measures only explained up to 50-60% of the variation.
