It is shown that highly conducting films of polyaniline protonated with di-esters of sulfosuccinic and sulfophthalic acids which contain alkyl- or alkoxy-type substituents exhibit highly anisotropic structural, electrical and magnetic properties. The layered-like structure of these films can be described as consisting of polyaniline chains which are mainly oriented parallel to the plane of the film and form regular out-of-plane stacks. These stacks are separated by bilayers of the dopant anions. Accordingly, the main anisotropy observed for solution cast films implies in-plane and out-of-plane measurements. An electrical anisotropy of about 80 is found for the in-plane and out-of-plane electronic conductivities at 5 K. The temperature dependences of the in-plane and out-of-plane conductivities are qualitatively similar and have been fitted as a series combination of variable-range-hopping-type and power law contributions. A maximum is observed in the temperature dependence of the electrical anisotropy at low temperature. The films also show a clear anisotropy of magnetization whose temperature and field characteristics depend on the chemical structure of the dopant anion. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Twenty-five specimens of the freshwater red alga Compsopogon were collected from locations in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australasia and Oceania, and from an aquarium, with the goal of determining genetic diversity among specimens and ascertaining the number of phylogenetic species. Specimens were morphologically identified as having either the 'caeruleus' morphology, with regular polyhedral cortical cells, or the 'leptoclados' morphology, with irregular cortical cells with rhizoidal outgrowths. The 'leptoclados' morphology has been used by some researchers to distinguish the genus Compsopogonopsis from Compsopogon, or at least to distinguish C. leptoclados from other Compsopogon species. Sequence data for the rbcL gene and cox1 barcoding region were obtained for most specimens. In addition, SSU and partial LSU (barcode) rDNA were explored for a few specimens, but all sequences were identical. For the 25 newly generated and eight previously published rbcL gene data, there were seven unique haplotypes, but the sequence divergence was very low (≤7 bp, ≤ 0.7%). One haplotype was widespread, represented by 21 specimens from diverse locations in all regions sampled. Likewise, the 22 new and one previously published cox1 barcode region sequences yielded seven unique haplotypes with little sequence divergence (≤13 bp, ≤ 2.0%). One haplotype was widespread, being shared among 16 specimens from all regions. The combined molecular and morphological data showed no genetic differentiation between the 'caeruleus' and 'leptoclados' morphologies. The ubiquitous distribution of Compsopogon in tropical/subtropical regions and its low genetic variation are probably facilitated by the alga's ability to tolerate a wide range of stream conditions and its propagation via asexual spores. Given the findings of previous culture-based studies, morphometric research and field observations, coupled with the results of our study, we conclude there is only a single monospecific genus worldwide and that the species is correctly called C. caeruleus, since this is the oldest validly published name; all other previously described species of Compsopogon and Compsopogonopsis are synonyms. © 2013 British Phycological Society.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) can be used to monitor hazardous and inaccessible areas. In these situations, the power supply (e.g. battery) of each node cannot be easily replaced. One solution to deal with the limited capacity of current power supplies is to deploy a large number of sensor nodes, since the lifetime and dependability of the network will increase through cooperation among nodes. Applications on WSN may also have other concerns, such as meeting temporal deadlines on message transmissions and maximizing the quality of information. Data fusion is a well-known technique that can be useful for the enhancement of data quality and for the maximization of WSN lifetime. In this paper, we propose an approach that allows the implementation of parallel data fusion techniques in IEEE 802.15.4 networks. One of the main advantages of the proposed approach is that it enables a trade-off between different user-defined metrics through the use of a genetic machine learning algorithm. Simulations and field experiments performed in different communication scenarios highlight significant improvements when compared with, for instance, the Gur Game approach or the implementation of conventional periodic communication techniques over IEEE 802.15.4 networks. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The aim of this study was to evaluate the total number of clusters per plant and the sugar concentration of Superior Seedless grapevine branches under different soil water tensions conditions. The statistical design was a randomized block with 4 treatments (a) control, b) 70 kPa tension, c) 50 kPa tension, d) 30 kPa tension, and 6 replications, each plot consisting of two plants. Soil moisture curves were plotted in laboratory and field conditions, potential bud fertility (carried out with the help of a 30x magnifier glass and collecting 17 branches in the primary arm of the plant with 15 buds each), actual fertility (given by the fertile buds to sprouted buds per plant ratio) and total sugars. Laboratory conditions helped stress to reach a -70 kPa level in just 21 days during the procedure to determine the retention curve in the laboratory. The different stress levels applied to the soil did not cause significant differences in the total number of clusters per plant. However, a -30 kPa stress showed a 68% reduction in water depth when compared to control and different soil water stress affected the carbohydrate percentage in branches of the Superior Seedless vine.

SnO2:2 at. %Er xerogel samples were obtained by sol-gel technique from colloidal suspensions with distinct pHs. The evaluation of critical regions inside the nanocrystallite is fundamental for the interpretation of the influence of pH on the emission data. In this way, the nanocrystal depletion layer thickness was obtained with the help of photoluminescence, Raman, X-ray diffraction, and field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy measurements. It was observed that acid suspensions (pH < 7) lead to high surface disorder in which a larger number of cross-linked bonds Sn-O-Sn among nanoparticles are present. For these samples, the nanoparticle depletion layer is larger as compared to samples obtained from other pH. Photoluminescence measurement in the near infrared region indicates that the emission intensity of the transition 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 is also influenced by the pH of the starting colloidal suspension, generating peaks more or less broadened, depending on location of Er3+ ions in the SnO2 lattice (high or low symmetry sites). © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

A Organizaçãao Mundial da Sáude caracteriza o trânsito como um problema de sáude pública, motivo pelo qual se justificam as preocupações e os esforços de diversos países em criar políticas que venham a frear os índices cada vez mais crescentes de acidentes de trânsito que trazem prejuízos sociais e financeiros a todos. Neste sentido, a conservação da infraestrutura das rodovias ganha um papel relevante nas discussões que tratam os acidentes e suas causas, vez que a infraestrutura de uma rodovia pode ser apontada como um fator determinante para tais ocorrências. Diante disto, esta dissertação tem como objetivo investigar de que forma a precariedade estrutural da Rodovia Federal BR 316, entre os quilômetros 0 ao 10, potencializou a ocorrência de acidentes de trânsito nos anos de 2009 a 2012. Para tanto, lançou-se mão de uma metodologia baseada em explorações teóricas aliadas a análise de informações provenientes do banco de dados da Polícia Rodoviária Federal e pesquisa de campo, materializada a partir da apresentação de fotos ilustrativas do trecho pesquisado, possibilitando o desenvolvimento de um novo Índice de Qualidade para a Rodovia. Os dados colhidos foram tratados a partir da aplicação das técnicas estatísticas análise descritiva e análise multivariada a fim de confirmar a hipótese suscitada. Destaque-se que, no trecho pesquisado o fluxo de veículos e pedestres é intenso e, além, é um intervalo quilométrico que apresenta diversos problemas estruturais como, por exemplo, o aumento e a diminuição do número de pistas de rolamento, a má qualidade dos retornos, a falta de segurança e higiene das passarelas, a descontinuidade dos acostamentos, a inadequação das paradas de ônibus, enfim. No que tange à acidentes e às suas causas, pôde-se constatar que no ano de 2010 houveram mais ocorrências, especialmente, do tipo colisão com bicicleta, colisão com objeto móvel, colisão frontal e colisão transversal, motivadas por desobediência à sinalização, velocidade incompatível, ingestão de álcool, dentre outros. Finalmente, deve-se ressaltar o fato de que nos trechos considerados ruins, além da falta de atenção, a principal causa de acidentes é o defeito na via, corroborando-se então, a hipótese que a precariedade da infraestrutura da rodovia potencializou as ocorrências de acidentes de trânsito, no período de 2009 a 2012. Diante disto, é possível afirmar que o acidente de trânsito é um fato social, consubstanciando como um problema que abarca aspectos sociopolíticos e culturais da sociedade moderna, mas que também é potencializado pelo estado de conservação estrutural das Rodovias.
