Seagrass meadows, one of the world's most important and productive coastal habitats, are threatened by a range of anthropogenic actions. Burial of seagrass plants due to coastal activities is one important anthropogenic pressure leading to the decline of local populations. In our study, we assessed the response of eelgrass Zostera marina to sediment burial from physiological, morphological, and population parameters. In a full factorial field experiment, burial level (5-20cm) and burial duration (4-16 weeks) were manipulated. Negative effects were visible even at the lowest burial level (5 cm) and shortest duration (4 weeks), with increasing effects over time and burial level. Buried seagrasses showed higher shoot mortality, delayed growth and flowering and lower carbohydrate storage. The observed effects will likely have an impact on next year's survival of buried plants. Our results have implications for the management of this important coastal plant.

The volume presents planktological and chemical data collected during cruise No. 51 of RV "Meteor" to the equatorial Atlantic (FGGE '79) from February to June 1979. A standard section along the meridian 22° W across the equator was sampled ten times between 2° S and 3° N. Together with a temperature and salinity profile, concentrations of oxygen, nutrients and chlorophyll a were analyzed in water samples down to a depth of 250 m. Solar radiation and light depths were measured for determination of primary productivity of the euphotic zone according to the simulated in situ method. Zooplankton biomass was estimated in 5 depth intervals down to 300 m by means of a multiple opening and closing net equipped with a mesh size of 100 µm.

Marine snow (MS) distribution from the surface to 1000 m depth was determined in the equatorial Pacific using the underwater video profiler during the Etude du Broutage en Zone Equatoriale cruise in fall 1996. The latitudinal transect was carried out at 17 stations along the 180° meridian from 8°S to 8°N during a cold phase of El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Higher MS concentrations were found below the equatorial zone than poleward. At the equator the estimated integrated MS carbon/m**2 in the upper kilometer was 5.7 g/m**2, while both southward and northward (between 1° and 8°) the mean integrated MS carbon was about 2.7 g/m**2. In the upper 50 m the MS carbon was twofold lower than the combined carbon of autotrophic and heterotrophic protists and four times lower than the mesozooplankton carbon biomass, both measured concurrently during the cruise. Different water bodies had different MS content. The highest concentrations were found in the South Equatorial Current, the South Equatorial Counter Current, and the North Equatorial Countercurrent. Tropical waters at the south in the South Subsurface Countercurrents and the warm northern superficial waters had the lowest MS biomass. Mechanistically, a latitudinal "conveyor belt", a poleward divergence of upwelled waters that return to the equator after being downwelled at north and south convergent zones, may partially explain the vertical distribution of particulate matter observed during the studied period.

This data on the distribution of the accumulation rate and 18O content of near-surface layers in the eastern part of the Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica, were derived from an analysis of 16 firn cores. The firn cores were drilled along the traverse route of the Filchner-V-Campaign in 1995. The traverse followed an ice flowline of the Foundation Ice Stream and reached the margin of the inland ice, an area which has not yet been investigated. On the ice shelf the accumulation rates decrease with distance from the coast. Ascending to the inland ice the accumulation rates again reach almost coastal values. This regional distribution is in agreement with the temperature gradient along the traverse. The 18O content of the near-surface layers is closely related to the 10 m firn temperature. They strongly decrease from the grounding line towards the inland ice. At the southernmost site at 1100 m a.s.l., the mean d18O value of the firn decreases to -40?. Ice with that isotopic signature was found in cores from the central part of the Ronne Ice Shelf just above the marine ice layer, indicating that it originates from this area. All ice deposited as snow further south was melted beneath the ice shelf after passing the grounding-line area. The time series of accumulation rate and 18O content reveal no climatic trend during the last 30-50 years.

During an expedition aboard R/V Pavel Gordienko (September, 2002) investigations in the Sea of Japan areas, where radioactive wastes were disposed by the former Soviet Union, were carried out in order to assess present level of radioactive contamination of marine environment. Concentration of I37Cs, radioecologically one of the most important radionuclides, in near-bottom sea water and bottom sediments were measured to be low, 2.8-17.2 Bq/m**3 and 3.2-27.2 Bq/kg dry weight, respectively, that did not differ significantly from levels elsewhere in the northwest Pacific Ocean arising from global fallout. Results of measurements were compared with results of the Joint Japanese- Korean -Russian expedition to the Sea of Japan in 1994.
