A pin diode-loaded active doubly periodic flat strip FSS is shown to act as a dynamic screen. It is shown that by means of d.c. bias control, we can utilize the screen in, (1) transmission mode as a dual band electromagnetic shutter, or with the inclusion of a ground plane in reflection mode, (is (2) it dual band refection canceller. (3) an amplitude shift keying (ASK) spatial modulator. The properties of the FSS are characterized using a specially designed parallel plate waveguide simulator that permits normal incidence excitation of the FSS under test. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals. A simple method for the selection of the appropriate choice of surface-mounted loading resistor required for a thin radar absorber based on a high-impedance surface (HIS) principle is demonstrated. The absorber consists of a HIS, (artificial magnetic ground plane), thickness 0.03 lambda(0) surface-loaded resistive-elements interconnecting a textured surface of square patches. The properties of absorber are characterized under normal incident using a parallel plate waveguide measurement technique over the operating frequency range of 2.6-3.95 GHz. We show that for this arrangement return loss and bandwidth are insensitive to +/- 2% tolerance variations in surface resistor values about the value predicted using the method elaborated in this letter, and that better than -28 dB at 3.125 GHz reflection loss can be obtained with an effective working bandwidth of up to 11% at -10 dB reflection loss. This paper presents the results of experimental study of passive intermodulation (PIM) generation in microstrip lines with U-shaped and meandered strips, impedance tapers, and strips with the profiled edges. It is shown that the geometrical discontinuities in printed circuits may have a noticeable impact on distributed PIM generation even when their effect is indiscernible in the linear regime measurements. A consistent interpretation of the observed phenomena has been proposed on the basis of the phase synchronism in the four-wave mixing process. The results of this study reveal new features of PIM production important for the design and characterization of low-PIM microstrip circuits. © 2010 IEEE.

An architecture to simultaneously affect both amplitude and phase control from a reflectarray element using an impedance transformation unit is demonstrated. It is shown that a wide range of control is possible from a single element, removing the conventional necessity for variable sized elements across an array in order to form a desired reflectarray far-field pattern. Parallel plate waveguide measurements for a 2.2 GHz prototype element validate the phase and amplitude variation available from the element. It is demonstrated that there is sufficient control of the element's reflection response to allow Dolph-Tschebyscheff weighting coefficients for major-lobe to side-lobe ratios of up to 36 dB to be implemented.

This paper describes a serpentine flexure spring design and fabrication process development for radio frequency microelectromechanical (RF MEMS) capacitive switches with coplanar waveguide (CPW) lines. Sputtered tungsten is employed as the CPW line conductor instead of Au, a non-Si compatible material. The bridge membrane is fabricated from Al. The materials and fabrication process can be integrated with CMOS and SOI technology to reduce cost. Results show the MEMS switch has excellent performance with insertion loss 0.3dB, return loss -27dB at 30GHz and high isolation -30dB at 40GHz. The process developed promises to simplify the design and fabrication of RF MEMS on silicon.

A new method for modeling-frequency-dependent boundaries in finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) and Kirchhoff variable digital waveguide mesh (K-DWM) room acoustics simulations is presented. The proposed approach allows the direct incorporation of a digital impedance filter (DIF) in the Multidimensional (2D or 3D) FDTD boundary model of a locally reacting surface. An explicit boundary update equation is obtained by carefully constructing a Suitable recursive formulation. The method is analyzed in terms of pressure wave reflectance for different wall impedance filters and angles of incidence. Results obtained from numerical experiments confirm the high accuracy of the proposed digital impedance filter boundary model, the reflectance of which matches locally reacting surface (LRS) theory closely. Furthermore a numerical boundary analysis (NBA) formula is provided as a technique for an analytic evaluation of the numerical reflectance of the proposed digital impedance filter boundary formulation.

In this paper, we present new methods for constructing and analysing formulations of locally reacting surfaces that can be used in finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations of acoustic spaces. Novel FDTD formulations of frequency-independent and simple frequency-dependent impedance boundaries are proposed for 2D and 3D acoustic systems, including a full treatment of corners and boundary edges. The proposed boundary formulations are designed for virtual acoustics applications using the standard leapfrog scheme based on a rectilinear grid, and apply to FDTD as well as Kirchhoff variable digital waveguide mesh (K-DWM) methods. In addition, new analytic evaluation methods that accurately predict the reflectance of numerical boundary formulations are proposed. numerical experiments and numerical boundary analysis (NBA) are analysed in time and frequency domains in terms of the pressure wave reflectance for different angles of incidence and various impedances. The results show that the proposed boundary formulations structurally adhere well to the theoretical reflectance. In particular, both reflectance magnitude and phase are closely approximated even at high angles of incidence and low impedances. Furthermore, excellent agreement was found between the numerical boundary analysis and the experimental results, validating both as tools for researching FDTD boundary formulations.

In this paper, a complete method for finite-difference time-domain modeling of rooms in 2-D using compact explicit schemes is presented. A family of interpolated schemes using a rectilinear, nonstaggered grid is reviewed, and the most accurate and isotropic schemes are identified. Frequency-dependent boundaries are modeled using a digital impedance filter formulation that is consistent with locally reacting surface theory. A structurally stable and efficient boundary formulation is constructed by carefully combining the boundary condition with the interpolated scheme. An analytic prediction formula for the effective numerical reflectance is given, and a stability proof provided. The results indicate that the identified accurate and isotropic schemes are also very accurate in terms of numerical boundary reflectance, and outperform directly related methods such as Yee's scheme and the standard digital waveguide mesh. In addition, one particular scheme-referred to here as the interpolated wideband scheme-is suggested as the best scheme for most applications.

This paper presents methods for simulating room acoustics using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique, focusing on boundary and medium modeling. A family of nonstaggered 3-D compact explicit FDTD schemes is analyzed in terms of stability, accuracy, and computational efficiency, and the most accurate and isotropic schemes based on a rectilinear grid are identified. A frequency-dependent boundary model that is consistent with locally reacting surface theory is also presented, in which the wall impedance is represented with a digital filter. For boundaries, accuracy in numerical reflection is analyzed and a stability proof is provided. The results indicate that the proposed 3-D interpolated wideband and isotropic schemes outperform directly related techniques based on Yee's staggered grid and standard digital waveguide mesh, and that the boundary formulations generally have properties that are similar to that of the basic scheme used.

We review the design and fabrication of thin-film composite optical waveguides (OWG) with high refractive index for sensor applications. A highly sensitive optical sensor device has been developed on the basis of thin-film, composite OWG. The thin-film OWG was deposited onto the surface of a potassium-ion-exchanged (K+) glass OWG by sputtering or spin coating (5-9 mm wide, and with tapers at both ends). By allowing an adiabatic transition of the guided light from the secondary OWG to the thin-film OWG, the electric field of the evanescent wave at the thin film was enhanced. The attenuation of the guided light in the thin film layer was small, and the guided light intensity changed sensitively with the refractive index of the cladding layer. Our experimental results demonstrate that thin-film, composite OWG gas sensors or immunosensors are much more sensitive than sensors based on other technologies. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The concept of frequency steerable two-dimensional electromagnetic focusing by using a tapered leaky-wave line source embedded in a parallel-plate medium is presented. Accurate expressions for analyzing the focusing pattern of a rectilinear leaky-wave lens (LWL) from its constituent leaky-mode tapered propagation constant are described. The influence of the main LWL structural parameters on the synthesis of the focusing pattern is discussed. The ability to generate frequency steerable focusing patterns has been demonstrated by means of an example involving a LWL in hybrid waveguide printed-circuit technology and the results are validated by a commercial full-wave solver.

The use of high-impedance surfaces (HISs) to increase the frequency-scanning sensitivity of hollow leaky-wave antennas (LWAs) is presented. The LWA consists of a hollow rectangular waveguide with one of its narrow walls replaced by a partially reflective surface, and it is loaded with a metallodielectric HIS to increase its beam-scanning response. Theoretical results based on a simple transverse equivalent network illustrate the physical mechanism responsible for the improvement, and they are verified by experiments on a prototype working in the 11-16 GHz band.

This paper aims at providing a better insight into the 3D approximations of the wave equation using compact finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) schemes in the context of room acoustic simulations. A general family of 3D compact explicit and implicit schemes based on a nonstaggered rectilinear grid is analyzed in terms of stability, numerical error, and accuracy. Various special cases are compared and the most accurate explicit and implicit schemes are identified. Further considerations presented in the paper include the direct relationship with other numerical approaches found in the literature on room acoustic modeling such as the 3D digital waveguide mesh and Yee's staggered grid technique.

Selective enhancement (> 10(3)) of harmonics extending to the water window (similar to 4 nm) generated in an argon gas filled straight bore capillary waveguide is demonstrated. This enhancement is in good agreement with modeling which indicates that multimode quasi-phase-matching is achieved by rapid axial intensity modulations caused by beating between the fundamental and higher-order capillary modes. Substantial pulse energies (> 10 nJ per pulse per harmonic order) at wavelengths beyond the carbon K edge (similar to 4.37 nm, similar to 284 eV) up to similar to 360 eV are observed from argon ions for the first time.

A new scheme for quasi-phasematching high harmonic generation (HHG) in gases is proposed. In this, the rapid variation of the axial intensity resulting from excitation of more than one mode of a waveguide is used to achieve quasi phasematching. Numerical modeling demonstrates enhancement of the harmonic signal over that achieved for a single coherence length by factors > 10(4). (C) 2007 Optical Society of America
