Reintroducing the red-billed curassow in Brazil: Population viability analysis points to potential success

Reintroduction can be enhanced by data from long-term post-release monitoring, which allows for modeling opportunities such as population viability analysis (PVA). PVA-relevant data were gathered via long-term monitoring of reintroduced red-billed curassows at the Guapiacu Ecological Reserve (REGUA), located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, over 25 months. In the present article, we (1) assess the robustness of the reintroduction plan, (2) evaluate the viability of the current reintroduced population, and (3) examine mitigation options to increase the viability of this population. VORTEX indicates that the initial plan, fully implemented, was likely to establish a viable population at REGUA. The current population is unviable; the best mitigation strategies are to eliminate hunting altogether, or at least reduce it by half, and to supplement ten immature pairs in 2015. A positive long-term outcome at REGUA is still possible; we encourage the Brazilian government and private stakeholders to consider population supplementation, both to achieve success at REGUA and to improve the evidence base for future reintroductions. FLOW AROUND A SQUARE CYLINDER POSITIONED NEAR A SMOOTH FLAT PLATE

Vortex shedding phenomenon produced by a square cylinder placed close to a smooth flat plate is experimentally studied by means of flow visualization techniques and hot-film anemometry. Qualitative and quantitative information about the flow field has been obtained for Reynolds numbers up to 1,000. Vortex shedding images in several Reynolds number have been captured and the non dimensional vortex shedding frequency has been obtained as a function of the Reynolds number.

The oil extraction in deep waters sparked new areas of knowledge, the creation of engineering courses dedicated just to these processes and a wide field of analysisvoiding multiple impacts in case of faults, mainly the economic and environmental. This paper aims to show on the effects and causes of fatigue failure in steel tubes used for oil and gastransportation (linepipe), mainly caused by vortex induced vibrations, or VIV. To make this, through laboratory tests, it found trough the curve Stress versus Number of Cycles, and thus estimating that with a stress value of 350 MPa or less, the fatigue life cycle of the API 5CT T95 (1% Cr) pipe is estimated infinite. It could conclude that the analyzed material has good fatigue failure resistance for offshore use, taking into account only the influence of VIV's, since there are no stress concentrators

Determination of estrogenic mycotoxins in environmental water samples by low-toxicity dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

A novel, simple, rapid and eco-friendly method based on dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction using a bromosolvent was developed to determine six estrogenic mycotoxins (zearalenone, zearalanone, alpha-zearalanol, beta-zearalanol, alpha-zearalenol and beta-zearalenol) in water samples by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry in the negative mode (LC-ESI-MS/MS). The optimal conditions for this method include the use of 100 mu L bromocyclohexane as an extraction solvent (using a non-dispersion solvent), 10 mL of aqueous sample (adjusted to pH 4), a vortex extraction time of 2 min, centrifugation for 10 min at 3500 rpm and no ionic strength adjustment. The calibration function was linear and was verified by applying the Mandel fitting test with a 95% confidence level. No matrix effect was observed. According to the relative standard deviations (RSDs), the precision was better than 13% for the repeatability and intermediate precision. The average recoveries of the spiked compounds ranged from 81 to 118%. The method limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) considering a 125-fold pre-concentration step were 4-20 and 8-40 ng L-1, respectively. Next, the method was applied to the analysis of the environmental aqueous samples, demonstrating the presence of beta-zearalanol and zearalanone in the river water samples. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
