The electron recombination lifetime in a sensitized semiconductor assembly is greatly influenced by the crystal structure and geometric form of the light-harvesting semiconductor nanocrystal. When such light harvesters with varying structural characteristics are configured in a photoanode, its interface with the electrolyte becomes equally important and directly influences the photovoltaic efficiency. We have systematically probed here the influence of nanocrystal crystallographic structure and shape on the electron recombination lifetime and its eventual influence on the light to electricity conversion efficiency of a liquid junction semiconductor sensitized solar cell. The light-harvesting cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals of distinctly different and controlled shapes are obtained using a novel and simple liquid gas phase synthesis method performed at different temperatures involving very short reaction times. High resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic studies respectively exhibit different crystallographic phase content and optical properties. When assembled on a mesoscopic TiO2 film by a linker molecule, they exhibit remarkable variation in electron recombination lifetime by 1 order of magnitude, as determined by ac-impedance spectroscopy. This also drastically affects the photovoltaic efficiency of the differently shaped nanocrystal sensitized solar cells.

When one starts to analyze the evolution of the interfacial reaction product layers between dissimilar materials it is often found out that as the number of interacting species grows, the complexity of the analysis increases extremely rapidly. It may even appear that the task is just too difficult to be completed. In this article we present the thermodynamic-kinetic method, which can be used to rationalize the evolution of interfacial reaction layers and bring back the physics to the analyses. The method is conceptually very simple. It combines energetics-what can happen-with kinetics-how fast things take place. Yet the method is flexible enough that it can utilize quantitative and qualitative data starting from the atomistic simulations up to the experiments carried out with bulk materials. Several examples about how to utilize this method in material scientific problems are given.

Superprotonic phase transitions and thermal behaviors of three complex solid acid systems are presented, namely Rb3H(SO4)2-RbHSO4 system, Rb3H(SeO4)2-Cs3H(SeO4)2 solid solution system, and Cs6(H2SO4)3(H1.5PO4)4. These material systems present a rich set of phase transition characteristics that set them apart from other, simpler solid acids. A.C. impedance spectroscopy, high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction, and thermal analysis, as well as other characterization techniques, were employed to investigate the phase behavior of these systems.
Rb3H(SO4)2 is an atypical member of the M3H(XO4)2 class of compounds (M = alkali metal or NH4+ and X = S or Se) in that a transition to a high-conductivity state involves disproportionation into two phases rather than a simple polymorphic transition [1]. In the present work, investigations of the Rb3H(SO4)2-RbHSO4 system have revealed the disproportionation products to be Rb2SO4 and the previously unknown compound Rb5H3(SO4)4. The new compound becomes stable at a temperature between 25 and 140 °C and is isostructural to a recently reported trigonal phase with space group P3̅m of Cs5H3(SO4)4 [2]. At 185 °C the compound undergoes an apparently polymorphic transformation with a heat of transition of 23.8 kJ/mol and a slight additional increase in conductivity.
The compounds Rb3H(SeO4)2 and Cs3H(SeO4)2, though not isomorphous at ambient temperatures, are quintessential examples of superprotonic materials. Both adopt monoclinic structures at ambient temperatures and ultimately transform to a trigonal (R3̅m) superprotonic structure at slightly elevated temperatures, 178 and 183 °C, respectively. The compounds are completely miscible above the superprotonic transition and show extensive solubility below it. Beyond a careful determination of the phase boundaries, we find a remarkable 40-fold increase in the superprotonic conductivity in intermediate compositions rich in Rb as compared to either end-member.
The compound Cs6(H2SO4)3(H1.5PO4)4 is unusual amongst solid acid compounds in that it has a complex cubic structure at ambient temperature and apparently transforms to a simpler cubic structure of the CsCl-type (isostructural with CsH2PO4) at its transition temperature of 100-120 °C [3]. Here it is found that, depending on the level of humidification, the superprotonic transition of this material is superimposed with a decomposition reaction, which involves both exsolution of (liquid) acid and loss of H2O. This reaction can be suppressed by application of sufficiently high humidity, in which case Cs6(H2SO4)3(H1.5PO4)4 undergoes a true superprotonic transition. It is proposed that, under conditions of low humidity, the decomposition/dehydration reaction transforms the compound to Cs6(H2-0.5xSO4)3(H1.5PO4)4-x, also of the CsCl structure type at the temperatures of interest, but with a smaller unit cell. With increasing temperature, the decomposition/dehydration proceeds to greater and greater extent and unit cell of the solid phase decreases. This is identified to be the source of the apparent negative thermal expansion behavior.

Low-threshold and highly efficient continuous-wave laser performance of Yb:Y3Al5O12 (Yb:YAG) single crystal grown by a temperature gradient technique (TGT) was achieved at room temperature. The laser can be operated at 1030 and 1049 nm by varying the transmission of the output coupler. Slope efficiencies of 57% and 68% at 1049 and 1030 nm, respectively, were achieved for 10 at. % Yb:YAG sample in continuous-wave laser-diode pumping. The effect of pump power on the laser emission spectrum of both wavelengths is addressed. The near-diffraction-limited beam quality for different laser cavities was achieved. The excellent laser performance indicates that TGT-grown Yb:YAG crystals have very good optical quality and can be potentially used in high-power solid-state lasers.

Here we present a novel signal processing technique for a square wave thermally-modulated carbon black/polymer composite chemoresistor. The technique consists of only two mathematical operations: summing the off-transient and on-transient conductance signals; and subtracting the steady-state conductance signal. A single carbon black/polyvinylpyrrolidone composite chemo -resistor was fabricated and used to demonstrate the validity of the technique. Classification of water, methanol and ethanol vapours was successfully performed using only the peak time of the resultant curves. Quantification of the different vapours was also possible using the height of the peaks, because it was linearly proportional to concentration. This technique does not require zero-gas calibration and thus is superior to previously reported methods. ©2009 IEEE.

Classical high voltage devices fabricated on SOI substrates suffer from a backside coupling effect which could result in premature breakdown. This phenomenon becomes more prominent if the structure is an IGBT which features a p-type injector. To suppress the premature breakdown due to crowding of electro-potential lines within a confined SOI/buried oxide structure, the partial SOI (PSOI) technique is being introduced. This paper analyzes the off-state behavior of an n-type Superjunction (SJ) LIGBT fabricated on PSOI substrate. During the initial development stage the SJ LIGBT was found to have very high leakage. This was attributed to the back and side coupling effects. This paper discusses these effects and shows how this problem could be successfully addressed with minimal modifications of device layout. The off-state performance of the SJ LIGBT at different temperatures is assessed and a comparison to an equivalent LDMOSFET is given. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We demonstrate that the carrier capture and relaxation processes in InAs/GaAs quantum dots can be detected by a simple degenerate pump-probe technique. We have observed a rising process in the transient reflectivity, following the initial fast relaxation in a GaAs matrix, and assigned this rising process to the carrier capture from the GaAs barriers to the InAs layers. The assignment was modeled using the Kramers-Kronig relations. The capture time was found to depend strongly on the InAs layer thickness as well as on the excitation density and photon energy. A practical package technique for temperature independent Fiber Bragg grating sensor is proposed. A uniform strength cantilever with two FBG attached on the upper and lower surfaces was utilized as the key element. By detecting two wavelengths differential output, the applied force can be obtained and temperature effects can be eliminated. Experiment results show the sensor has linear response and output signal uctuates less than 12pm as temperature changes from -10 degrees C to 50 degrees C. The maximum thermal error is less than 0.3% of the full measurement range.

The role of Bronsted acidity of titanium silicalite zeolite (with different ratios of Si/Ti) in oxidation reactions of styrene has been investigated and discussed. For zeolites with Si/Ti > 42, most of the titanium is in the zeolite framework. These framework titanium species, which act both as the isolated titanium centers and as Bronsted acidity centers (together with the Bronsted acidity produced by the tetrahedral aluminum impurity introduced during synthesis), can catalyze both the epoxidation and the succeeding rearrangement reactions, thus promoting the formation of phenylacetaldehyde. With an increase in the titanium content of the zeolite, titanium will tend to stay outside the zeolite lattice, except for the TiOx nanophases which can be occluded in the zeolite channels or on the external surface. These non-framework titanium species are favorable for the carbon-carbon bond scission, leading to the production of additional benzaldehyde. The catalytic performances of these zeolites with different Si/Ti ratios are correlated here with their structural information by using solid-state NMR and UV-Vis methods. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. A nickel molybdenum phosphate, (NH3CH2CH2NH3)(4).(NH3CH2CH2NH2). Na .[Ni2Mo12O30(PO4)(HPO4)(4)(H2PO4)(3)]. 6H(2)O, invoicing molybdenum present in V oxidation, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Deep brown-red crystals are formed in the triclinic system, space group P (1) over bar, a = 12,011(2), b = 14,612(3), c = 21.252(4) Angstrom, alpha = 80.54(2)degrees, beta = 83.10(2)degrees, gamma = 76.29(2)degrees, V = 3561.4(12) Angstrom(3), Z = 2, lambda(MoK alpha) = 0.71073 Angstrom (R(F) = 0.0529 for 9880 reflections), Data mere collected on a Siemens P4 diffractometer at 20 degrees C in the range of 1.75 degrees < theta < 23.02 degrees using the omega-scan technique. The structure was solved by direct methods using the program SHELXTL-93 and refined with the method of fun-matrix least-squares on F-2. The structure of the title compound may be considered to be two [Mo6O15(HPO4)(H2PO4)(3)](5-) units bonded together with a nickel atom, although several P-O groups are not protonated on account of coordination with a Na+ cation, The one-dimensional tunnels were formed in the solid of the title compound. A probe reaction of the oxidation of acetaldehyde with H2O2 using the title compound as catalyst was carried out in a liquid- solid system, showing that the title compound had high catalytic activity in the reaction, (C) 1999 Academic Press.

Endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n were synthesized and extracted with high-yield by K-H carbon-are evaporation and an effective pyridine extraction technique at high-temperature high-pressure. Laser-desorption-ionization time-of-flight (LD-TOF) mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid-state fluorescent emission spectroscopy and gas phase derivation reaction with the self-chemical ionization mass spectrometric ion system of vinyl acetate were employed for studying the electronic structures, fluorescent properties and gas phase reactivities of metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n. The experimental results suggest that endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n would have the approximate structures of Tb3+@C-2n(3-) similar to other metallofullerenes, good fluorescent emission properties and active reactivities in gas phase ion-molecular reactions.

The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) at different potentials has been used to study the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 3.5% NaCl solution on glassy carbon (GC) electrode in this work. Results show that ORR consists of three two-electron reaction steps and both superoxide ion (O-2(-)) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which are produced by ORR, obstruct the diffusion of oxygen to the surface of the electrode and make the EIS results change into a transmissive finite diffusion process with the real part contraction and a reflective finite diffusion process from a semi-infinite diffusion process. The values of electron transfer resistance (R-t) and diffusion resistance (R-d) were calculated from EIS. O-2(-) influenced strongly on the Rt values and induced a maximum at -0.45 V.

Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and rotating disk electrode voltammetry have been used to study the effect of chloride ions on the dissolved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on Q235 carbon steel electrode in a 0.02 M calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)) solutions imitating the liquid phase in concrete pores. The results indicate that the cathodic process on Q235 carbon steel electrode in oxygen-saturated 0.02 M Ca(OH)(2) with different concentrations of chloride ions contain three reactions except hydrogen evolution: dissolved oxygen reduction, the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), and then the reduction of Fe(II) to Fe. The peak potential of ORR shifts to the positive direction as the chloride ion concentration increases. The oxygen molecule adsorption can be inhibited by the chloride ion adsorption, and the rate of ORR decreases as the concentration of chloride ions increases. The mechanism of ORR is changed from 2e(-) and 4e(-) reactions, occurring simultaneously, to quietly 4e(-) reaction with the increasing chloride ion concentration.

The acidic properties of TS-1 and Silicalite-I zeolites have been investigated by the solid-state MAS NMR technique capable of in situ sample pretreatment. As shown by a combination of the P-31 MAS NMR and H-1 MAS NMR techniques with trimethylphosphine, not only Bronsted acid sites but also Lewis acid sites exist in the TS-1 zeolites. Moreover, TS-1 zeolite is more acidic compared with Silicalite-1. The H-1, Si-29 MAS NMR spectra and the resonance related to Bronsted acid species in the P-31 MAS NMR spectra demonstrate clearly that the presence of titanium in the framework results in the formation of a new hydroxy group, titanols, which is more acidic than silanols of Silicalite-1. The P-31 MAS NMR measurements also illustrate convincingly the existence of at least two different Lewis acid species on the TS-1 zeolites. The conversion of propylene oxide into methoxypropanol catalyzed by TS-1 or Silicalite-I zeolite in methanol solution as a test reaction has also been described. With the increase of titanium in zeolite, TS-1 appears to have a higher activity during the reaction of propylene oxide to methoxypropanol.
