Climate change and hunger as the challenges in the global food system

In the last decades, there has been a growing tendency towards international trade and globalisation, particularly leading to a significant increase in flows of agricultural commodities worldwide. From a macroeconomic perspective, the commodity projections are more optimistic than the previous years and the long run tendency shows an increasing demand for feedstock. However, the strong shifts of shocks and fluctuations (in terms of prices and volumes) are a concern to global food security, with the number of hungry people rising to nearly one billion. Agriculture is a main user of natural resources, and it has a strong link with rural societies and the environment. Forecasted impacts from climate change, limited productive endorsements and emerging rivals on crop production, such bio-energy, aggravate the panorama on food scarcity. In this context, it is a great challenge on farming and food systems to reduce global hunger and produce in sustainable ways adequate supplies for food, feed, and non-food uses. The main objective of this work is to question the sustainability of food and agriculture systems. It is particularly interesting to know its role and if it will be able to respond to a growing population with increasing food demand in a world where pressure on land, water and other natural resources are already evident, and, moreover, climate change will also condition and impact the outcome. Furthermore, a deeper focus will be set on developing countries, which are expected to emerge and take a leading role in the international arena. This short paper is structured as follows: Section I, “Introduction”, describes the social situation regarding hunger, Section II, “Global Context”, attempts to summarise the current scenario in the international trading scheme and present the emerging rivals for primary resources, and in Section III, “Climate Change”, presents an overview of possible changes in the sector and future perspectives in the field. Finally, in Section IV, “Conclusion”, the main conclusions are presented.

Parallel Methods for Synthesizing Whole-Hand Grasps from Generalized Prototypes

This report addresses the problem of acquiring objects using articulated robotic hands. Standard grasps are used to make the problem tractable, and a technique is developed for generalizing these standard grasps to increase their flexibility to variations in the problem geometry. A generalized grasp description is applied to a new problem situation using a parallel search through hand configuration space, and the result of this operation is a global overview of the space of good solutions. The techniques presented in this report have been implemented, and the results are verified using the Salisbury three-finger robotic hand.

Overview of coded light projection techniques for automatic 3D profiling

Obtaining automatic 3D profile of objects is one of the most important issues in computer vision. With this information, a large number of applications become feasible: from visual inspection of industrial parts to 3D reconstruction of the environment for mobile robots. In order to achieve 3D data, range finders can be used. Coded structured light approach is one of the most widely used techniques to retrieve 3D information of an unknown surface. An overview of the existing techniques as well as a new classification of patterns for structured light sensors is presented. This kind of systems belong to the group of active triangulation method, which are based on projecting a light pattern and imaging the illuminated scene from one or more points of view. Since the patterns are coded, correspondences between points of the image(s) and points of the projected pattern can be easily found. Once correspondences are found, a classical triangulation strategy between camera(s) and projector device leads to the reconstruction of the surface. An overview of the advantages and constraints of coded pattern projection techniques for autonomous navigation

The absolute necessity of obtaining 3D information of structured and unknown environments in autonomous navigation reduce considerably the set of sensors that can be used. The necessity to know, at each time, the position of the mobile robot with respect to the scene is indispensable. Furthermore, this information must be obtained in the least computing time. Stereo vision is an attractive and widely used method, but, it is rather limited to make fast 3D surface maps, due to the correspondence problem. The spatial and temporal correspondence among images can be alleviated using a method based on structured light. This relationship can be directly found codifying the projected light; then each imaged region of the projected pattern carries the needed information to solve the correspondence problem. Esta investigación se desarrolló con el fin de conocer de conocer detalladamente el comportamiento del sector automotriz de Colombia en los últimos años, haciendo énfasis en el segmento de vehículos de gama media del mercado, los cuales son los más comprados en volumen por los colombianos. El estudio se realizó en un periodo comprendido entre 2.006 y 2.011 para tener identificación y valoración real del sector hasta la situación actual, donde se evaluaron las ensambladoras presentes en el país que pertenecen a la división o clasificación arancelaria dada por Código Industrial Internacional Uniforme - CIIU. El trabajo se fundamenta en la metodología del Análisis Estructural de Sectores Estratégicos por medio del cual es necesario desarrollar un examen histórico del comportamiento del sector en los últimos años con el cual se presenta el desarrollo en términos económicos, ventas, estado de hacinamiento, manchas blancas, principales participantes del mercado, TLC´s y demás rubros que caracterizan el segmento. De igual manera, el trabajo de investigación refleja una vista general de las estrategias utilizadas por las principales marcas del estudio, evaluando como estas son imitadas o no por sus competidores, y de igual manera, determinar que hace a una empresa ser líder en el mercado no tan solo tomando el ámbito económico como pilar.
