Thirteen intubated, high dependency patients with neurological injuries were studied in order to investigate the short term respiratory effects of neurophysiological facilitation and passive movement on tidal volume (V-T), minute ventilation (V-E), respiratory rate (V-R) and oxygen saturation (SpO(2)). The subjects were studied under four conditions: no intervention (control) and during periods of neurophysiological facilitation, passive movement and sensory stimulation. All periods were standardised to three minutes duration and all parameters were recorded before and after each intervention. Neurophysiological facilitation produced significant increases (p < 0.01) in V-E and SpO(2) (p < 0.05) when compared with control values, with an overall mean increase in V-E of 14.6%. Similarly, passive movement increased V-E (p < 0.01) by an average of 9.8% and also increased SpO(2) (p < 0.01). In contrast, sensory stimulation produced significant increases (p < 0.01) in SpO(2) with control levels, with no significant change in V-T or V-E. There was no significant difference in V-R with all treatments. This study provides preliminary evidence of improved short term ventilatory function following neurophysiological facilitation, independent of generalised sensory stimulation, which has not been previously examined in the literature, supporting its use in the management of high dependency neurological patients.

We present whole-rock and zircon rare earth element (REE) data from two early Archaean gneisses (3.81 Ga and 3.64 Ga) from the Itsaq gneiss complex, south-west Greenland. Both gneisses represent extremely rare examples of unaltered, fresh and relatively undeformed igneous rocks of such antiquity. Cathodoluminescence imaging of their zircons indicates a single crystallisation episode with no evidence for either later metamorphic and/or anatectic reworking or inheritance of earlier grains. Uniform, single-population U/Pb age data confirm the structural simplicity of these zircons. One sample, a 3.64 Ga granodioritic gneiss from the Gothabsfjord, yields a chondrite-normalised REE pattern with a positive slope from La to Lu as well as substantial positive Ce and slight negative Eu anomalies, features generally considered to be typical of igneous zircon. In contrast, the second sample, a 3.81 Ga tonalite from south of the Isua Greenstone Belt, has variable but generally much higher light REE abundances, with similar middle to heavy REE. Calculation of zircon/melt distribution coefficients (D-REE(zircon/melt)) from each sample yields markedly different values for the trivalent REE (i.e. Ce and Eu omitted) and simple application of one set of D-REE(zircon/melt) to model the melt composition for the other sample yields concentrations that are in error by up to two orders of magnitude for the light REE (La-Nd). The observed light REE overabundance in the 3.81 Ga tonalite is a commonly observed feature in terrestrial zircons for which a number of explanations ranging from lattice strain to disequilibrium crystallisation have been proposed and are further investigated herein. Regardless of the cause of light REE overabundance, our study shows that simple application of zircon/melt distribution coefficients is not an unambiguous method for ascertaining original melt composition. In this context, recent studies that use REE data to claim that > 4.3 Ga Hadean detrital zircons originally crystallised from an evolved magma, in turn suggesting the operation of geological processes in the early Earth analogous to those of the present day (e.g. subduction and melting of hydrated oceanic crust), must be regarded with caution. Indeed, comparison of terrestrial Hadean and > 3.9 Ga lunar highland zircons shows remarkable similarities in the light REE, even though subduction processes that have been used to explain the terrestrial zircons have never operated on the Moon. A detailed study of the Goniopora reef profile at Dengloujiao, Xuwen County, Leizhou Peninsula, the northern coast of the South China Sea suggests that a series of high-frequency, large-amplitude and abrupt cold events occurred during the Holocene Hypsithermal, an unusual phenomenon termed Leizhou Events in this paper. This period (corresponding to C-14 age of 6.2 -6.7 kaBP or calendar age of 6.7-7.2 kaBP), when the climatic conditions were ideal for coral. reefs to develop, can be divided into at least nine stages. Each stage (or called a climate optimum), lasting about 20 to 50 a, was terminated by an abrupt cold nap and (or) a sea-level lowering event in winter, leading to widespread emergence and death of the Goniopora corals, and growth discontinuities on the coral surface. Such a cyclic process resulted in the creation of a > 4m thick Goniopora reef flat. During this period, the crust subsided periodically but the sea level was rising. The reef profile provides valuable archives for the study of decadal-scale mid-Holocene climatic oscillations in the tropical area of South China. Our results provide new evidence for high-frequency climate instability in the Holocene Hypsithermal, and challenge the traditional understanding of Holocene climate.

This comparative history examines the importance of notions of credit and honour in new definitions of masculinity that gained ground in New South Wales and the Cape Colony in the 1830s. The argument draws on an analysis of two defamation actions brought by auctioneers in this period and discusses the role of masculine occupation in colonial bourgeois identity. The diffusion of a culture of respectability through the British Empire was a global phenomenon, and a necessary precursor to the establishment of representative political institutions in the colonies by the middle of the nineteenth century.

A simple percolation theory-based method for determination of the pore network connectivity using liquid phase adsorption isotherm data combined with a density functional theory (DFT)-based pore size distribution is presented in this article. The liquid phase adsorption experiments have been performed using eight different esters as adsorbates and microporous-mesoporous activated carbons Filtrasorb-400, Norit ROW 0.8 and Norit ROX 0.8 as adsorbents. The density functional theory (DFT)-based pore size distributions of the carbons were obtained using DFT analysis of argon adsorption data. The mean micropore network coordination numbers, Z, of the carbons were determined based on DR characteristic plots and fitted saturation capacities using percolation theory. Based on this method, the critical molecular sizes of the model compounds used in this study were also obtained. The incorporation of percolation concepts in the prediction of multicomponent adsorption equilibria is also investigated, and found to improve the performance of the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) model for the large molecules utilized in this study. This work examines the effects of level of silica filler (at 0, 10, 30, 50wt%) on the gelation and vitrification of a model silica-filled diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF)/methylenedianiline (MDA) system. An increased filler level is shown to decrease the gelation and vitrification times at low temperatures (below 80degreesC). FTIR cure kinetics show that the reaction rates are increased and the activation energies of gelation are reduced at these temperatures, indicating that network formation is made easier. Entropic and catalytic reasons for this phenomenon are discussed. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

Tourism and leisure have historically been studied in isolation, but recent researchers attempt to understand the relationship between them. However, there have been few comparisons of how people behave in their environments. This paper provides a conceptual model of the relationship based oil a critical review of the current literature oil pleasure-oriented environments. The model indicates that despite potential differences in observable behavior, there is a commonality between the underlying influences that define how people behave during their leisure and tourism experiences. Therefore, the paper concludes that these should not be regarded as separate phenomenon. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All Lights reserved.

When the existence in Utrecht of the DeWitt/Van Buchel drawing of the Swan Theater became known in 1888, William Poel was already seven years into his inquiries into the best means of staging the public amphitheater and great hall plays of the English Renaissance.1 I mention this to emphasize that the discourse came before the fact: the belief that Shakespeare's plays are best staged as it was then imprecisely imagined they had once been staged-simply, without elaborate settings or time-consuming scene changes, with direct actor-audience address, "in-the-round"-had as much to do with reactions against the late nineteenth-century stage's pictorialism, with its set-changing interruptions and cut-and-paste revisions to Shakespeare's texts, as it had to do with presenting the Bard "authentically." Some of the confusion caused by the uneasy mixing of historical scholarship and the assumptions and practices of our own contemporary theater profession can be glimpsed in the phenomenon of modern in-the-round staging, often claimed as a more "authentic" approach to Shakespeare in performance, but one which is then modified to make possible post-Stanislavsky acting methods and to satisfy modern audience expectations.

Background & Aims: Two major mutations are defined within the hemochromatosis gene, HFE. Although the effects of the C282Y mutation have been well characterized, the effects of the H63D mutation remain unclear. We accessed a well-defined population in Busselton, Australia, and determined the frequency of the H63D mutation and its influence on total body iron stores. Methods: Serum transferrin saturation and ferritin levels were correlated with the H63D mutation in 2531 unrelated white subjects who did not possess the C282Y mutation. Results: Sixty-two subjects (2.1%) were homozygous for the H63D mutation, 711 (23.6%) were heterozygous, and 1758 (58.4%) were wild-type for the H63D mutation. Serum transferrin saturation was significantly increased in male and female H63D homozygotes and heterozygotes compared with wild-types. Serum ferritin levels within each gender were not influenced by H63D genotypes. Elevated transferrin saturation greater than or equal to45% was observed in a greater proportion of male H63D carriers than male wild-types. Male H63D homozygotes (9%) and heterozygotes (3%) were more likely to have both elevated transferrin saturation and elevated ferritin greater than or equal to300 ng/mL than male wild-types (0.7%). Homozygosity for H63D was not associated with the development of clinically significant iron overload. Conclusions: Presence of the H63D mutation results in a significant increase in serum transferrin saturation but does hot result in significant iron overload. In the absence of the C282Y mutation, the H63D mutation is not clinically significant.

Background/Aims: Concordance of iron indices between same sex siblings homozygous for the cysteine-to-tyrosine substitution at amino acid 282 (C282Y) mutation suggests that the variable phenotype in hereditary hemochromatosis is caused by genetic factors. Concordance of iron indices between same-sex heterozygous sibling pairs would provide further evidence of genetic modifiers of disease expression, and guidance for family screening strategies of subjects heterozygous for the C282Y mutation. Methods: We compared the iron indices of 35 C282Y homozygous and 35 C282Y heterozygous same-sex sibling pairs. To clarify whether concordance between siblings was due to environmental or genetic factors we compared the iron indices of 164 C282Y homozygous-normal, same-sex dizygotic twins. Results: Serum ferritin (r = 0.50, P = 0.003), hepatic iron concentration (r = 0.61, P = 0.025) and hepatic iron index (r = 0.67, P = 0.01) were highly concordant in C282Y homozygotes. Heterozygote siblings were concordant for serum ferritin (r = 0.76, P = 0.0001) and transferrin saturation (r = 0.79, P = 0.0001). Homozygote-normal same-sex dizygotic twins were concordant for serum ferritin (r = 0.62, P = 0.0001) but not for transferrin saturation. Conclusions: Concordance of iron indices exists in C282Y homozygote and heterozygote sibling pairs. Siblings of expressing C282Y heterozygotes require phenotypic assessment. These data provide evidence for modifying genes influencing disease expression in hemochromatosis. (C) 2002 European Association for the Study of the Liver. Published by Elsevier Science B.V. This paper outlines a major empirical study that is being undertaken by an interdisciplinary team into genetic discrimination in Australia. The 3-year study will examine the nature and extent of this newly emerging phenomenon across the perspectives of consumers, third parties, and the legal system and will analyze its social and legal dimensions. Although the project is confined to Australia, it is expected that the outcomes will have significance for the wider research community as this is the most substantial study of its kind to be undertaken to date into genetic discrimination.

Circular proteins are a recently discovered phenomenon. They presumably evolved to confer advantages over ancestral linear proteins while maintaining the intrinsic biological functions of those proteins. In general, these advantages include a reduced sensitivity to proteolytic cleavage and enhanced stability. In one remarkable family of circular proteins, the cyclotides, the cyclic backbone is additionally braced by a knotted arrangement of disulfide bonds that confers additional stability and topological complexity upon the family. This article describes the discovery, structure, function and biosynthesis of the currently known circular proteins. The discovery of naturally occurring circular proteins in the past few years has been complemented by new chemical and biochemical methods to make synthetic circular proteins; these are also briefly described.

This study further examines the phenomenon of conservative auditor behaviour by considering the level of voluntary disclosure of Year 2000 remediation information in company annual reports. Previous studies have provided evidence of conservative auditor behaviour by examining the link between Big 6 auditor choice and accruals (Francis and Krishnan 1999; Becker et al., 1998; Defond and Subramanyam 1998). Protecting their reputation capital increases Big 6 auditor incentives to act conservatively to avoid litigation risk. We propose and find that Big 6 auditor clients disclose more Year 2000 remediation information than non–Big 6 auditor clients.

This paper examines the proposition that the traditional archetype of the professional partnership is said to have changed into a more 'business-like' entity, the managed professional business. It broadens the restricted case sample base on which much of the evidence has been adduced, by developing a survey questionnaire through which 197 large British law firms were sampled. Change, consistent with the notion of a more commercially oriented and consciously managed organization, is concentrated in the market-facing area of the firm but coexists with areas of continuity in the governance of the firm and its strategic management. The findings reveal a more managerial form of organization in which the core elements of the traditional form of professional organization have not been transformed. These results contest the assertion of either transformational or sedimented change found in other, case-based research and suggest that archetype change needs theoretically to be distinguished from the general phenomenon of greater managerialism within the professional service firm.

Colour pattern variation is a striking and widespread phenomenon. Differential predation risk between individuals is often invoked to explain colour variation, but empirical support for this hypothesis is equivocal. We investigated differential conspicuousness and predation risk in two species of Australian rock dragons, Ctenophorus decresii and C. vadnappa. To humans, the coloration of males of these species varies between 'bright' and 'dull'. Visual modelling based on objective colour measurements and the spectral sensitivities of avian visual pigments showed that dragon colour variants are differentially conspicuous to the visual system of avian predators when viewed against the natural background. We conducted field experiments to test for differential predation risk, using plaster models of 'bright' and 'dull' males. 'Bright' models were attacked significantly more often than 'dull' models suggesting that differential conspicuousness translates to differential predation risk in the wild. We also examined the influence of natural geographical range on predation risk. Results from 22 localities suggest that predation rates vary according to whether predators are familiar with the prey species. This study is among the first to demonstrate both differential conspicuousness and differential predation risk in the wild using an experimental protocol.
