On line isotope separation techniques (ISOL) for production of ion beams of short-lived radionuclides require fast separation of nuclear reaction products from irradiated target materials followed by a transfer into an ion source. As a first step in this transport chain the release of nuclear reaction products from refractory metals has been studied systematically and will be reviewed. High-energy protons (500 - 1000 MeV) produce a large number of radionuclides in irradiated materials via the nuclear reactions spallation, fission and fragmentation. Foils and powders of Re, W, Ta, Hf, Mo, Nb, Zr, Y, Ti and C were irradiated with protons (600 - 1000 MeV) at the Dubna synchrocyclotron, the CERN synchrocyclotron and at the CERN PS-booster to produce different nuclear reaction products. The main topic of the paper is the determination of diffusion coefficients of the nuclear reaction products in the target matrix, data evaluation and a systematic interpretation of the data. The influence of the ionic radius of the diffusing species and the lattice type of the host material used as matrix or target on the diffusion will be evaluated from these systematics. Special attention was directed to the release of group I, II and III-elements. Arrhenius plots lead to activation energies of the diffusion process.

In this work polymers belonging to polyaniline and polyaniline doped with camphor sulphonic acid are synthesised. Cobalt phthalocyanine is an interesting candidate belonging to the tetramers. Studies on the composites containing cobalt phthalocyanine tetramer and polyaniline doped with camphor sulphonic acid for various concentration are also undertaken in order to understand the mechanism. RF plasma polymerised aniline and furfural are prepared. The structural and electrical properties are evaluated. The bombardment of swift heavy ions of these films are carried out and the effect of irradiation on their properties is also investigated.

In many fields such as earth science biology, environment and electronics, the knowledge about elemental distributions and chemical speciation is important. The determination of metal levels especially the toxic ones both in the environment and in biological materials are increasingly demanded by the society.Ion selective sensors have become one of the most effective ad powerful means for analytical scientists for the trace level monitoring of metal ions. The wide range of applications ,low material requirements and simplicity of analytical procedure have not only brought ion-selective electrodes in to the lime light of analytical chemistry, but have promoted their use as tools for physiologists, medical researchers, biologists, geologists, environmental protection specialists etc.Potentiometric ion-selective sensors have been developed for the determination of lanthanide ions such as La3+,Nd3+,Pr3+,Sm3+, and Gd3+.The sensors fabricated include both PVC membrane sensor and chemically modified carbon paste sensor. A set of 10 sensors have been developed. The response parameters of all the sensors have been studied and the sensors were applied as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration and for the determination of metal ions in real samples.

Polyaniline thin films prepared by RF plasma polymerisation were irradiated with 92MeV Si ions for various fluences of 1 1011, 1 1012 and 1 1013 ions/cm2. FTIR and UV–vis–NIR measurements were carried out on the pristine and Si ion irradiated polyaniline thin films for structural evaluation and optical band gap determination. The effect of swift heavy ions on the structural and optical properties of plasma-polymerised aniline thin film is investigated. Their properties are compared with that of the pristine sample. The FTIR spectrum indicates that the structure of the irradiated sample is altered. The optical studies show that the band gap of irradiated thin film has been considerably modified. This has been attributed to the rearrangement in the ring structure and the formation of CRC terminals. This results in extended conjugated structure causing reduction in optical band gap

We have measured prompt and delayed emission spectra of electrons from foilexcited Be, B^+, and Be^2+ ions at 300 keV. On the basis of recently calculated eigenvalues we identified two lines in the prompt Be^+ spectrum as transitions from 2s^22p and 2s2p^2. The delayed Be spectrum indicates that transitions from highly excited quintet states occur. We propose radiationless deexcitation with one excited spectator electron not involved in the transition.

The interatomic potential of the system I - I at intermediate and small distances is calculated from atomic DFS electron densities within a statistical model. Structures in the potential, due to the electronic shells, are investigated. Calculations of the elastic differential scattering cross section for small angles and several keV impact energies show a detailed peak pattern which can be correlated to individual electronic shell interaction.

We present the first observation of optical transitions between doubly excited doublet states in the term systems N V, 0 VI and F VII. The spectra were produced by foil excitation of fast ion beams. The assignment of the spectral lines was made by comparison with the results of MCDP calculations along the isoelectronic sequence. The same method also led to the identification of two 3d - 4f quartet transitions in Mg X.

In continuation of our previous work on the quintet transitions 1s2s2p^2 ^5 P-1s2s2p3d ^5 P^0, ^5 D^0, results on other n = 2 - n' = 3 quintet transitions for elements N, 0 and F are presented. Assignments have been established by comparison with Multi-Configuration Dirac-Fock calculations. High spectral resolution on beam-foil spectroscopy was essential for the identification of most of the lines. For some of the quintet lines decay curves were measured, and the lifetimes extracted were found to be in reasonable agreement with MCDF calculations.

Relativistic Auger rates for the 2p spectra of Mg-like ions have been calculated in the atomic range 13 < Z < 36. We used the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method but beyond a simple frozen-orbital approach we include also relaxation for the bound electrons and the interchannel interaction between the continuum states. Both effects may alter the individual transition rates remarkably. This is analysed for a few selected states within the isoelectronic sequence. Weak transitions within the 2p spectra can be changed by an order of magnitude because of the continuum coupling. The influence of both effects for higher-Z ions is reduced but still remain visible.

In continuation of our previous work on doubly-excited ions with three and four electrons we present the first results on optical transitions in the term system of doubly-excited ions with five electrons. Transitions between such sextet states were identified in beam-foil spectra of the ions nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine. Assignments were first established by comparison with Multi-Configuration Dirac-Fock calculations. Later assignments were aided by Multi-Configuration Hartree-Fock calculations (see the contribution by G. Miecznik et al. in this issue). Decay curves were recorded for all six candidate lines. The lifetime results are compared to theoretical values which confirm most of the assignments qualitatively.

Multiconfiguration relativistic Dirac-Fock (MCDF) values have been computed for the first four ionization potentials (IPs) of element 104 (unnilquadium) and of the other group 4 elements (Ti, Zr, and Hf). Factors were calculated that allowed correction of the systematic errors between the MCDF IPs and the experimental IPs. Single "experimental" IPs evaluated in eV (to ± 0.1 eV) for element 104 are: [104(0),6.5]; [104( 1 + ),14.8]; [104(2 + ),23.8]; [104(3 + ),31.9]. Multiple experimental IPs evaluated in eV for element 104 are: [(0-2+ ),21.2±0.2]; [(0-3+ ),45.1 ±0.2]; [(0-4+ ),76.8±0.3].Our MCDF results track 11 of the 12 experimental single IPs studied for group 4 atoms and ions. The exception is Hf( 2 + ). We submit our calculated IP of 22.4 ± 0.2 eV as much more accurate than the value of 23.3 eV derived from experiment.
