In the design of high-speed low-power electrical generators for unmanned aircraft and spacecraft, maximization of specific output (power/weight) is of prime importance. Several magnetic circuit configurations (radial-field, axial-field, flux-squeezing, homopolar) have been proposed, and in this paper the relative merits of these configurations are subjected to a quantitative investigation over the speed range 10 000–100000 rev/min and power range 250 W-10 kW. The advantages of incorporating new high energy-density magnetic materials are described. Part I deals with establishing an equivalent circuit for permanent-magnet generators. For each configuration the equivalent circuit parameters are related to the physical dimensions of the generator components and an optimization procedure produces a minimum volume design at discrete output powers and operating speeds. The technique is illustrated by a quantitative comparison of the specific outputs of conventional radial-field generators with samarium cobalt and alnico magnets. In Part II the specific outputs of conventional, flux-squeezing, and claw-rotor magnetic circuit configurations are compared. The flux-squeezing configuration is shown to produce the highest specific output for small sizes whereas the conventional configuration is best at large sizes. For all sizes the claw-rotor configuration is significantly inferior. In Part III the power densities available from axial-field and flux-switching magnetic circuit configurations are maximized, over the power range 0.25-10 kW and speed range 10 000–100000 rpm, and compared to the results of Parts I & II. For the axial-field configuration the power density is always less than that of the conventional and flux-squeezing radial-field configurations. For the flux-switching generator, which is able to withstand relatively high mechanical forces in the rotor, the power density is again inferior to the radial-field types, but the difference is less apparent for small (low power, high speed) generator sizes. From the combined results it can be concluded that the flux-squeezing and conventional radial-field magnetic circuit configurations yield designs with minimum volume over the power and speed ranges considered. © 1985, IEEE. A diffuse interface phase field model is proposed for the unified analysis of diffusive and displacive phase transitions under nonisothermal conditions. Two order parameters are used for the description of the phenomena: one is related to the solute mass fraction and the other to the strain. The model governing equations come from the balance of linear momentum, the solute mass balance (which will lead to the Cahn-Hilliard equation) and the balance of internal energy. Thermodynamic restrictions allow to define constitutive relations for the thermodynamic forces and for the mechanical and chemical dissipations. Numerical tests carried out at different values of the initial temperature show that the model is able to describe the main features of both the displacive and the diffusive phase transitions, as well as their effect on the temperature. © 2010, Advanced Engineering Solutions.

Data regarding the sexual behavior of black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus bieti) were collected in 1998 in a one-male unit in captivity by all-occurrences sampling during the mating season. Before the present study, little was known about the sexual behavior of this species. This study showed that female solicitation is mainly expressed as "prostration plus glancing laterally" (PG) or "sitting plus head moving up and down" (HM), and male solicitation is exhibited by the "grunt bared-teeth display." The mount-to-ejaculation ratio was 5.2 on average, and single-mount ejaculations (SMEs) were observed in only 4.4% of mounts on days with at least one ejaculation. Therefore, the main copulatory pattern of this species is multiple-mount ejaculation (MME). Females initiated 72% of 18 ejaculatory mounts. Females initiated more ejaculatory mounts than non-ejaculatory ones. In general, the patterns of sexual behavior in this species are similar to those reported for other Colobines. We study optical trapping of nanotubes and graphene. We extract the distribution of both centre-of-mass and angular fuctuations from three-dimensional tracking of these optically trapped carbon nanostructures. The optical force and torque constants are measured from auto and cross-correlation of the tracking signals. We demonstrate that nanotubes enable nanometer spatial, and femto-Newton force resolution in photonic force microscopy by accurately measuring the radiation pressure in a double frequency optical tweezers. Finally, we integrate optical trapping with Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy demonstrating the use of a Raman and photoluminescence tweezers by investigating the spectroscopy of nanotubes and graphene fakes in solution. Experimental results are compared with calculations based on electromagnetic scattering theory. © 2011 by the Author(s); licensee Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti, Messina, Italy.

We use laser beams with radial and azimuthal polarization to optically trap carbon nanotubes. We measure force constants and trap parameters as a function of power showing improved axial trapping efficiency with respect to linearly polarized beams. The analysis of the thermal fluctuations highlights a significant change in the optical trapping potential when using cylindrical vector beams. This enables the use of polarization states to shape optical traps according to the particle geometry, as well as paving the way to nanoprobe-based photonic force microscopy with increased performance compared to a standard linearly polarized configuration. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

The adhesive properties of the gecko foot have inspired designs of advanced micropatterned surfaces with increased contact areas. We have fabricated micropatterned pillars of vertically aligned carbon nanotube forests with a range of pillar diameters, heights, and spacings (or pitch). We used nanoindentation to measure their elastic and orthogonal adhesion properties and derive their scaling behavior. The patterning of nanotube forests into pillar arrays allows a reduction of the effective modulus from 10 to 15 MPa to 0.1-1 MPa which is useful for developing maximum conformal adhesion. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Our recent efforts of using large-eddy simulation (LES) type methods to study complex and realistic geometry single stream and co-flow nozzle jets and acoustics are summarized in this paper. For the LES, since the solver being used tends towards having dissipative qualities, the subgrid scale (SGS) model is omitted, giving a numerical type LES (NLES). To overcome near wall streak resolution problems a near wall RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) model is smoothly blended in the LES making a hybrid RANS-NLES approach. Several complex nozzle geometries including the serrated (chevron) nozzle, realistic co-axial nozzles with eccentricity, pylon and wing-flap are discussed. The hybrid RANS-NLES simulations show encouraging predictions for the chevron jets. The chevrons are known to increase the high frequency noise at high polar angles, but decrease the low frequency noise at lower angles. The deflection effect of the potential core has an important mechanism of noise reduction. As for co-axial nozzles, the eccentricity, the pylon and the deployed wing-flap are shown to influence the flow development, especially the former to the length of potential core and the latter two having a significant impact on peak turbulence levels and spreading rates. The studies suggest that complex and real geometry effects are influential and should be taken into count when moving towards real engine simulations. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Accurate and efficient computation of the distance function d for a given domain is important for many areas of numerical modeling. Partial differential (e.g. HamiltonJacobi type) equation based distance function algorithms have desirable computational efficiency and accuracy. In this study, as an alternative, a Poisson equation based level set (distance function) is considered and solved using the meshless boundary element method (BEM). The application of this for shape topology analysis, including the medial axis for domain decomposition, geometric de-featuring and other aspects of numerical modeling is assessed. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Hybrid large-eddy type simulations for cold jet flows from a serrated nozzle are performed at an acoustic Mach number Ma ac = 0.9 and Re = 1.03×10 6. Since the solver being used tends towards having dissipative qualities, the subgrid scale (SGS) model is omitted, giving a numerical type LES (NLES) or implicit LES (ILES) reminiscent procedure. To overcome near wall streak resolution problems a near wall RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) model is smoothly blended to the LES making a hybrid RANS-ILES. The geometric complexity of the serrated nozzle is fully considered without simplification or emulation. An improved but still modest hexahedral multi-block grid with circa 20 million grid points (with respect to 12.5 million in Xia et al.; Int J Heat Fluid Flow 30:1067-1079, 2009) is used. Despite the modest grid size, encouraging and improved results are obtained. Directly resolved mean and second-order fluctuating quantities along the jet centerline and in the jet shear layer compare favorably with measurements. The radiated far-field sound predicted using the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) surface integral method shows good agreement with the measurements in directivity and sound spectra. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Computations are made for chevron and coflowing jet nozzles. The latter has a bypass ratio of 6:1. Also, unlike the chevron nozzle, the core flow is heated, making the inlet conditions reminiscent of those for a real engine. A large-eddy resolving approach is used with circa 12 × 10 6 cell meshes. Because the codes being used tend toward being dissipative the subgrid scale model is abandoned, giving what can be termed numerical large-eddy simulation. To overcome near-wall modeling problems a hybrid numerical large-eddy simulation-Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes related method is used. For y + ≤ 60 a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model is used. Blending between the two regions makes use of the differential Hamilton-Jabobi equation, an extension of the eikonal equation. For both nozzles, results show encouraging agreement with measurements of other workers. The eikonal equation is also used for ray tracing to explore the effect of the mean flow on acoustic ray trajectories, thus yielding a coherent solution strategy. © 2011 by Cambridge University.
