This Master’s Thesis work reports about electric field distribution in recently developed silicon edgeless detector with a new current terminating structure. This structure enables the essential reduction of insensitive detector area as well as allows separation of the current flowing through the active area from the current flowing at the cut edge. The reliable operation of this detector is strongly needed due to the installation inside LHC. In accordance with formulated problems SEM was used as an investigation tool for collecting the data about electric field distribution.

Nanofiltration performance was studied with effluents from the pulp and paper industry and with model substances. The effect of filtration conditions and membrane properties on nanofiltration flux, retention, and fouling was investigated. Generally, the aim was to determine the parameters that influence nanofiltration efficiency and study how to carry out nanofiltration without fouling by controlling these parameters. The retentions of the nanofiltration membranes studied were considerably higher than those of tight ultrafiltration membranes, and the permeate fluxes obtained were approximately the same as those of tight ultrafiltration membranes. Generally, about 80% retentions of total carbon and conductivity were obtained during the nanofiltration experiments. Depending on the membrane and the filtration conditions, the retentions of monovalent ions (chloride) were between 80 and 95% in the nanofiltrations. An increase in pH improved retentions considerably and also the flux to some degree. An increase in pressure improved retention, whereas an increase in temperature decreased retention if the membrane retained the solute by the solution diffusion mechanism. In this study, more open membranes fouled more than tighter membranes due to higher concentration polarization and plugging of the membrane material. More irreversible fouling was measured for hydrophobic membranes. Electrostatic repulsion between the membrane and the components in the solution reduced fouling but did not completely prevent it with the hydrophobic membranes. Nanofiltration could be carried out without fouling, at least with the laboratory scale apparatus used here when the flux was below the critical flux. Model substances had a strong form of the critical flux, but the effluents had only a weak form of the critical flux. With the effluents, some fouling always occurred immediately when the filtration was started. However, if the flux was below the critical flux, further fouling was not observed. The flow velocity and pH were probably the most important parameters, along with the membrane properties, that influenced the critical flux. Precleaning of the membranes had only a small effect on the critical flux and retentions, but it improved the permeability of the membranes significantly.

A simple low-cost flow cell was developed, built and optimized in order to observe dynamic interfacial tension of continuous flow systems. Distinct materials can be used in one of the cell walls in order to observe the intermolecular forces between the flowing liquid and the chemical constitution of the walls. The fluorescence depolarization was evaluated using Rhodamine B as fluorescent probe seeded in ethylene glycol. The effects of the positioning angles on the data acquired across the cell are reported. The reproducibility of the data was evaluated with a spectrometer assembled in-house and the relative standard deviation was below 3%.

Very often hydrochloric acid is employed in acidification operations aiming to dissolve the mineral matrix in petroleum wheel operations, which always require intense use of corrosion inhibitors. This work presents an evaluation of common indicators, phenolfthaleine, fluorescein, methylene blue, alizarine S and methyl orange, as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in HCl 15% w/v at temperatures of 26, 40 and 60 ºC. Fluorescein and methyl orange show excelent corrosion inhibition efficiencies at 26 ºC; however at 60 ºC only fluorescein shows good corrosion inhibition when employed with alcohol and/or formaldehyde. For the fluorescein 1% w/v + formaldehyde 0.6% w/v mixture we present polarization and impedance curves and adsorption isotherms.

A systematic electrochemical study of a novel cyanide free galvanic plating solution of alkaline zinc is presented. Cell Hull tests and potentiodynamic linear polarization measurements were carried out to evaluate the influence of operational parameters, such as concentration, current efficiency and degradation of additives. The stability of the bath was assessed by a long term test during 40 h at 200 A m-2. The morphology of the coatings was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed good performance of the plating solution. The cost is similar to that of the commercial cyanide bath and lower than that of the commercial cyanide free bath.

In terms of the Fourier spectrum, a simple but general analytical expression is given for the evanescent field associated to a certain kind of non-paraxial exact solutions of the Maxwell equations. This expression enables one to compare the relative weight of the evanescent wave with regard to the propagating field. In addition, in those cases in which the evanescent term is significant, the magnitude of the field components across the transverse profile (including the evanescent features) can be determined. These results are applied to some illustrative examples.

Continuum solvation models are nowadays widely used in the modeling of solvent effects and the range of applications goes from the calculation of partition coefficients to chemical reactions in solution. The present work presents a detailed explanation of the physical foundations of continuum models. We discuss the polarization of a dielectric and its representation through the volume and surface polarization charges. The Poisson equation for a dielectric was obtained and we have also derived and discuss the apparent surface charge method and its application for free energy of solvation calculations.

2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitrostilbene (HNS) is a very important high explosive that is used in a range of military, aerospace and industrial formulations owing to its suitable properties. It is an insensitive and thermaly stable explosive that can be produced from 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). This paper shows the characterization of synthesized HNS by different techniques, such as elementary analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and through the determination of the heat of combustion in a calorimeter.

The decomposition of 〈͈Ŝ²〉 into atomic and diatomic contributions (local spin analysis) is used to detect and quantify the polyradical character of molecular systems. A model triradical system is studied in detail, and the local spin analysis is used to distinguish several patterns of local spin distributions and spin-spin interactions that can be found for different electronic states. How close a real molecular system is to an ideal system of k perfectly localized spin centers is utilized to define a measure of its k-radical character. The spin properties and triradical character of the lowest-lying electronic states of a number of all σ, all π, and σ-π organic triradicals are discussed in detail. The local spin contributions exhibit good correlation with experimental triradical stabilization energies

In this work we present the formulas for the calculation of exact three-center electron sharing indices (3c-ESI) and introduce two new approximate expressions for correlated wave functions. The 3c-ESI uses the third-order density, the diagonal of the third-order reduced density matrix, but the approximations suggested in this work only involve natural orbitals and occupancies. In addition, the first calculations of 3c-ESI using Valdemoro's, Nakatsuji's and Mazziotti's approximation for the third-order reduced density matrix are also presented for comparison. Our results on a test set of molecules, including 32 3c-ESI values, prove that the new approximation based on the cubic root of natural occupancies performs the best, yielding absolute errors below 0.07 and an average absolute error of 0.015. Furthemore, this approximation seems to be rather insensitive to the amount of electron correlation present in the system. This newly developed methodology provides a computational inexpensive method to calculate 3c-ESI from correlated wave functions and opens new avenues to approximate high-order reduced density matrices in other contexts, such as the contracted Schrödinger equation and the anti-Hermitian contracted Schrödinger equation

Osteoclasts are cells responsible for bone resorption. These cells undergo extensive membrane re-organization during their polarization for bone resorption and form four distinct membrane domains, namely the ruffled border, the basolateral membrane, the sealing zone and the functional secretory domain. The endocytic/biosynthetic pathway and transcytotic route(s) are important for the resorption process, since the endocytic/biosynthetic pathway brings the specific vesicles to the ruffled border whereas the transcytotic flow is believed to transport the degraded bone matrix away from the resorption lacuna to the functional secretory domain. In the present study, we found a new transcytotic route from the functional secretory domain to the ruffled border, which may compensate membrane loss from the ruffled border during the resorption process. We also found that lipid rafts are essential for the ruffled border-targeted late endosomal pathways. A small GTP-binding protein, Rab7, has earlier been shown to regulate the late steps of the endocytic pathway. In bone-resorbing osteoclasts it is involved in the formation of the ruffled border, which displays several features of late endosomal membranes. Here we discovered a new Rab7-interacting protein, Rac1, which is another small GTP-binding protein and binds to the GTP-form of Rab7 in vitro. We demonstrated further that Rab7 colocalizes with Rac1 at the fusion zone of the ruffled border in bone-resorbing osteoclasts. In other cell types, such as fibroblast-like cells, this colocalization is mainly perinuclear. Because Rac1 is known to control the actin cytoskeleton through its effectors, we suggest that the Rab7-Rac1 interaction may mediate late endosomal transport between microtubules and microfilaments, thus enabling endosomal vesicles to switch tracks from microtubules to microfilaments before their fusion to the ruffled border. We then studied the role of Rab-Rac1 interaction in the slow recycling pathway. We revealed that Rac1 also binds directly to Rab11 and to some other but not all Rab-proteins, suggesting that Rab-Rac1 interaction could be a general regulatory mechanism to direct the intracellular vesicles from microtubule mediated transport to actin filament mediated transport and vice versa. On the basis of our results we thus propose a new hypothesis for these GTPases in the regulation of intracellular membrane flow.

During blood-sucking, female members of the family Tabanidae transmit pathogens of serious diseases and annoy their host animals so strongly that they cannot graze, thus the health of the hosts is drastically reduced. Consequently, a tabanid-resistant coat with appropriate brightness, colour and pattern is advantageous for the host. Spotty coats are widespread among mammals, especially in cattle (Bos primigenius). In field experiments we studied the influence of the size and number of spots on the attractiveness of test surfaces to tabanids that are attracted to linearly polarized light. We measured the reflection-polarization characteristics of living cattle, spotty cattle coats and the used test surfaces. We show here that the smaller and the more numerous the spots, the less attractive the target (host) is to tabanids. We demonstrate that the attractiveness of spotty patterns to tabanids is also reduced if the target exhibits spottiness only in the angle of polarization pattern, while being homogeneous grey with a constant high degree of polarization. Tabanid flies respond strongly to linearly polarized light, and we show that bright and dark parts of cattle coats reflect light with different degrees and angles of polarization that in combination with dark spots on a bright coat surface disrupt the attractiveness to tabanids. This could be one of the possible evolutionary benefits that explains why spotty coat patterns are so widespread in mammals, especially in ungulates, many species of which are tabanid hosts

The paper examines the international distribution of energy intensities as a conventional proxy indicator of energy efficiency and sustainability in the consumption of resources, by employing some descriptive tools from the analysis of inequality and polarization. The analysis specifically focuses on the following points: firstly, inequalities are evaluated synthetically based on diverse summary measures and Lorenz curves; secondly, different factorial decompositions are undertaken that assist in investigating some explanatory factors (weighting factors, multiplicative factors and decomposition by groups); and thirdly, an analysis is made of the polarization of intensities when groups of countries are defined endogenously and exogenously. The results obtained have significant implications from both academic and political perspectives.

We present an Analytic Model of Intergalactic-medium and GAlaxy (AMIGA) evolution since the dark ages. AMIGA is in the spirit of the popular semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, although it does not use halo merger trees but interpolates halo properties in grids that are progressively built. This strategy is less memory-demanding and allows one to start modeling at sufficiently high redshifts and low halo masses to have trivial boundary conditions. The number of free parameters is minimized by making a causal connection between physical processes usually treated as independent of each other, which leads to more reliable predictions. However, the strongest points of AMIGA are the following: (1) the inclusion of molecular cooling and metal-poor, population III (Pop III) stars with the most dramatic feedback and (2) accurate follow up of the temperature and volume filling factor of neutral, singly ionized, and doubly ionized regions, taking into account the distinct halo mass functions in those environments. We find the following general results. Massive Pop III stars determine the intergalactic medium metallicity and temperature, and the growth of spheroids and disks is self-regulated by that of massive black holes (MBHs) developed from the remnants of those stars. However, the properties of normal galaxies and active galactic nuclei appear to be quite insensitive to Pop III star properties due to the much higher yield of ordinary stars compared to Pop III stars and the dramatic growth of MBHs when normal galaxies begin to develop, which cause the memory loss of the initial conditions.

The effectiveness of microemulsions (ME) of saponified coconut oil (OCS-ME) and diphenylcarbazide (DC-ME) on a carbon steel corrosion inhibition process was evaluated using an electrochemical method of polarization resistance. The ME was prepared with OCS, butanol, kerosene and saline solutions. OCS-ME and DC-ME showed highest inhibitions effects (77% and 92%, respectively) at lower concentrations (0.5% and 0.48 - 0.50%, respectively). The surfactant OCS (in H2O) showed lower efficiency (63% at 0.20 - 0.25% concentration). The greatest inhibitory effect of DC-ME could be correlated with the chemical structure and the rich O/W ME system, which are very important for adsorption phenomena in interfacial ME systems.
