Three heterometallic trinuclear Schiff base complexes, [{GuL(1)(H2O)}(2)Ni(CN)(4)]center dot 4H(2)O (1), [{CuL2(H2O)}(2)Ni(CN)(4)] (2), and [{CuL3(H2O)}(2)Ni(CN)(4)] (3) (HL1 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, HL2 = 7-methylamino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, and HL3 = 7-dimethylamino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one), were synthesized. All three complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV spectroscopies, and thermal analysis. Two of them (1 and 3) were also characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 forms a hydrogen-bonded one-dimensional metal-organic framework that stabilizes a helical water chain into its cavity, but when any of the amine hydrogen atoms of the Schiff base are replaced by methyl groups, as in L 2 and L 3, the water chain, vanishes, showing explicitly the importance of the host-guest H-bonding interactions for the stabilization of a water cluster.

Blue [{Cu(2,2'-bipy)(2)}(2){alpha-SiW12O40}] (bipy = bipyridyl) (1) and pale yellow [Mn(2,2'-bipy)(3)](2)[alpha-SiW12O40] (2) have been synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by IR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray structure analysis. In 1, the [alpha-SiW12O40](4-) ion acts as a bridge between the two [{Cu(2,2'-bipy)(2)](2+) moieties via coordination through the terminal oxygen atoms, while in 2, the [Mn(2,2'-bipy)(3)](2+) ion balances the charge on the polyoxo anion without forming any covalent bond. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of transition metal-mediated transformation of [alpha-SiW9O34](10-) to [alpha-SiW12O40](4-).

Nucleophilic attack of (triphenylphosphonio) cyclopentadienide on the dichlorodiazomethane-tungsten complex trans[ BrW(dppe)(2)(N2CCl2)]PF6 [dppe is 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino) ethane] results in C-C bond formation and affords the title compound, trans-[W(C24H18ClN2P)Br(C26H24P2)(2)]PF6 center dot 0.6CH(2)Cl(2). This complex, bis[1,2- bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane] bromido{chloro[3-(triphenylphosphonio) cyclopentadienylidene] diazomethanediido} tungsten hexafluorophosphate dichloromethane 0.6-solvate, contains the previously unknown ligand chloro[3-(triphenylphosphonio) cyclopentadienylidene] diazomethane. Evidence from bond lengths and torsion angles indicates significant through-ligand delocalization of electron density from tungsten to the nominally cationic phosphorus(V) centre. This structural analysis clearly demonstrates that the tungsten-dinitrogen unit is a powerful pi-electron donor with the ability to transfer electron density from the metal to a distant acceptor centre through an extended conjugated ligand system. As a consequence, complexes of this type could have potential applications as nonlinear optical materials and molecular semiconductors.

The compound bis[1,1'-N,N'-(2-picolyl) aminomethyl] ferrocene, L-1, was synthesized. The protonation constants of this ligand and the stability constants of its complexes with Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ were determined in aqueous solution by potentiometric methods at 25degreesC and at ionic strength 0.10 mol dm(-3) in KNO3. The compound L-1 forms only 1:1 (M:L) complexes with Pb2+ and Cd2+ while with Ni2+ and Cu2+ species of 2:1 ratio were also found. The complexing behaviour of L-1 is regulated by the constraint imposed by the ferrocene in its backbone, leading to lower values of stability constants for complexes of the divalent first row transition metals when compared with related ligands. However, the differences in stability are smaller for the larger metal ions. The structure of the copper complex with L-1 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and shows that a species of 2:2 ratio is formed. The two copper centres display distorted octahedral geometries and are linked through the two L1 bridges at a long distance of 8.781(10) Angstrom. The electrochemical behaviour of L-1 was studied in the presence of Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+, showing that upon complexation the ferrocene-ferrocenium half-wave potential shifts anodically in relation to that of the free ligand. The maximum electrochemical shift (DeltaE(1/2)) of 268 mV was found in the presence of Pb2+, followed by Cu2+ (218 mV), Ni2+ (152 mV), Zn2+ (111 mV) and Cd2+ (110 mV). Moreover, L-1 is able to electrochemically and selectively sense Cu2+ in the presence of a large excess of the other transition metal cations studied.

Oxorhenium(V) complexes of beta-diketonate systems have been synthesized and isolated in pure form. The red complexes n-Bu4N[ReO(R1COCHCOR2)Cl-3] (acac, R-1=R-2=CH3; bzac, R-1=CH3 and R-2=C6H5; bzbz, R-1=R-2=C6H5) have been characterized by elemental analyses, spectroscopic and other physico-chemical tools. One complex, n-Bu4N[ReO(bzbz)Cl-3] (1c) has been subjected to single-crystal X-ray analysis. In the structure of the anion, the metal has a six-coordinate octahedral environment in which the bidentate -diketone ligand is cis and trans to the terminal oxygen.

Reaction of CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O with the 1:1 condensate (L) of 2-(2-aminoethyl) pyridine and 1-methyl-2-imidazolecarboxaldehyde in methanol yields monomeric CuLCl2 center dot H2O (1). Recrystallisation of 1 from aqueous methanol medium containing excess of PF6- affords the 1D coordination polymer [CuLCl](n)(PF6)(n) (2). A chloride bridge results in the coordination polymer. A face-to-face interaction is observed between the imidazole rings in 2. The interaction influences the structure and magnetic properties of 2 markedly. The complex 2 is ferromagnetic with a J value of 1.79 +/- 0.01 cm (1). The imidazole fragments in 2 are coordinated to the metal. In mononuclear [HgL2 ''](ClO4)(2), where L '' is the 1:2 condensate of ethylenediamine and 1-methyl-2-imidazolecarboxaldehyde, the imidazolyl moieties are not under the direct influence of the metal. Here the imidazole-imidazole interaction is angular and more distant. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A family of oxorhenium (V) complexes of newly designed pyridylthioazophenolate ligands has been synthesized and isolated in pure form. The solid state structure of an organic compound (HL1) has been established by X-ray crystallography. The molecular structure observed in the solid state is that the two molecules of the ligand (HL1) in the asymmetric unit have similar geometries, except for the orientation of the pyridine ring. This series of organic moieties acts as tetradentate monobasic NSNO donor chelators in oxorhenium(V) complexes which has been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, H-1-NMR, UV-Vis. The complexes are 1: 1 electrolytes in nature in MeOH solution, the counter anion being ClO4). The electrochemical studies of the [(ReO)-O-V(L)Cl]ClO4 complexes in MeCN using TBAP as supporting electrolyte exhibit quasi-reversible voltammogram showing one-electron couple for [(ReO)-O-VI(L)Cl](2+)-[(ReO)-O-V(L)Cl](+) in the 1.11-1.29 V vs SCE range.

Reactions of the 1:2 condensate (L) of benzil dihydrazone and 1-methyl-2-imidazole carboxaldehyde with Cd(ClO4)(2)center dot xH(2)O and CdI2 yield [CdL2]( ClO4)(2) (1) and LCdI2 (2), respectively. The yellow ligand L, and its yellow complexes 1 and 2 are characterized by NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Though L contains four N-donor centers, 1 is found to be a four-coordinate double helicate with a square planar Cd(II)N-4 core and 2 a spiral coordination polymer with tetrahedral Cd(II)N2I2 moieties. The bidentate nature of L and the occurrence of the square planar coordination of Cd( II) is explained by DFT calculations. (c) 2007 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Reactions of the 1: 2 condensate (L) of benzil dihydrazone and 2-acetylpyridine with Hg(ClO4)(2) center dot xH(2)O and HgI2 yield yellow [HgL2](ClO4)(2) (1) and HgLI2 (2), respectively. Homoleptic 1 is a 8-coordinate double helical complex with a Hg(II)N-8 core crystallising in the space group Pbca with cell dimensions: a = 16.2250(3), b = 20.9563(7), c = 31.9886(11) angstrom. Complex 2 is a 4-coordinate single helical complex having a Hg(II)N2I2 core crystallising in the space group P2(1)/n with cell dimensions a = 9.8011(3), b = 17.6736(6), c = 16.7123(6) angstrom and b = 95.760(3). In complex 1, the N-donor ligand L uses all of its binding sites to act as tetradentate. On the other hand, it acts as a bidentate N-donor ligand in 2 giving rise to a dangling part. From variable temperature H-1 NMR studies both the complexes are found to be stereochemically non-rigid in solution. In the case of 2, the solution process involves wrapping up of the dangling part of L around the metal. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Complexes have been synthesised with bis(2-pyridine carboxaldehyde) ethylenediimine (1) and bis(2-pyridine carboxaldehyde)propylene-1,3-diimine (2) with all of the available lanthanide trinitrates. Crystal structures were obtained for all but one complex with 1 and for all but one complex with 2. Four distinct structural types were established for 1 but only two for 2, although in all cases the structures contained one ligand bound to the metal in a tetradentate fashion. With 1, the four different structures of the lanthanide(III) nitrate complexes included 11-coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)(H2O)] for Ln = La; 10 coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)(H2O)] with one monodentate and two bidentate nitrates for Ln = Ce, then 10-coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)] for Ln = Pr-Yb with three bidentate nitrates; and 9-coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)] with one monodentate and two bidentate nitrates for Ln = Lu. On the other hand for 2 only two distinct types of structure are obtained, the first type with Ln = La-Pr and the second type for Ln = Sm-Lu, although all are 10-coordinate with stoichiometry [Ln(2)(NO3)(3)]. The difference between the two types is in the disposition of the ligand relative to the nitrates. With the larger lanthanides La-Pr the ligand is found on one side of the coordination sphere with the three nitrate anions on the other. In these structures, the ligand is folded such that the angle between the two pyridine rings approaches 90degrees, while with the smaller lanthanides Sm-Lu, two nitrates are found on one side of the ligand and one nitrate on the other and the ligand is in an extended conformation such that the two pyridine rings are close to being coplanar. In both series of structures, the Ln-N and Ln-O bond lengths were consistent with the lanthanide contraction though there are significant variations between ostensibly equivalent bonds which are indicative of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and steric crowding in the complexes. Molecular modelling studies have been carried out on two bis(calix[4]diqu(inone) ionophores, each created from two (calix[4]diquinone)arenes bridged at their bottom rims via alkyl chains (CH2)(n), 1: n = 3, 2; n = 4, in order to understand the reported selectivity of these ligands towards different sized metal ions such as Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+ in dmso solution. Conformational. analyses have been carried out which show that in the lowest energy conformations of the two macrocycles, the individual calix[4]diquinones exhibit a combination of partial cone, 1,3-alternate and cone conformations. The interactions of these alkali metals with the macrocycles have been studied in the gas phase and in a periodic box of solvent dmso by molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics calculations. Molecular mechanics calculations have been carried out on the mode of entry of the ions into the macrocycles and suggest that this is likely to occur from the side of the central cavity, rather than through the main axis of the calix[4]diquinones. There are energy barriers of ca. 19 kcal mol(-1) for this entry path in the gas phase, but in solution no energy barrier is found. Molecular dynamics simulations show that in both 1 and 2, though particularly in the latter macrocycle, one or two solvent molecules are bonded to the metal throughout the course of the simulation, often to the exclusion, of one or more of the ether oxygen atoms. By contrast the carbonyl oxygen atoms remain bonded to the metal atoms throughout with bond lengths that remain significantly less than those to the ether oxygen atoms. Free energy perturbation studies have been carried out in dmso and indicate that for 1, the selectivity follows the order Rb+ approximate to K+ > Cs+ >> Na+, which is partially in agreement with the experimental results. The energy differences are small and indeed the ratio between stability constants found for Cs+ and K+ complexes is only 0.60, showing that 1 has only a slight preference for K+. For the larger receptor 2, which is better suited to metal complexation, the binding affinity follows the pattern Cs+ >> Rb+ >> K+ >> Na+, with energy differences of 5.75, 2.61, 2.78 kcal mol(-1) which is perfectly consistent with experimental results.

The complexes [Ru(1-C=C-1,10-C2B8H9)(dppe)Cp*] (3a), [Ru(1-C C-1,12-C2B10H11)(dppe)-Cp*] (3b), [{Ru(dppe)Cp*}(2){mu-1,10-(C C)(2)-1,10-C2B8H8}] (4a) and [{Ru(dppe)Cp*}(2){mu-1,12-(C C)2- 1,12-C2B10-H-10}] (4b), which form a representative series of mono- and bimetallic acetylide complexes featuring 10- and 12-vertex carboranes embedded within the dethynyl bridging ligand, have been prepared and structurally characterized. In addition, these compounds have been examined spectroscopically (UV-is-NIR, IR) in all accessible redox states. The significant separation of the two, one-electron anodic waves observed in the cyclic voltammograms of the bimetallic complexes 4a and 4b is largely independent of the nature of the electrolyte and is attributed to stabilization of the intermediate redox products [4a](+) and [4b](+) through interactions between the metal centers across a distance of ca. 12.5 angstrom. The mono-oxidized bimetallic complexes (4a](+) and [4b](+) exhibit spectroscopic properties consistent with a description of these species in terms of valence-localized (class II) mixed-valence compounds, including a unique low-energy electronic absorption band, attributed to an, IVCT-type transition that tails into the IR region. DFT calculations with model systems [4a-H](+) and [4b-H](+) featuring simplified ligand sets reproduce the observed spectroscopic data and localized electronic structures for the mixed-valence cations [4a](+) and [4b](+).

[MoO(O-2)(2)(PyCOXH)(H2O)] and PMePh3[MoO(O-2)(2)(PyCO)] (PyCOXH = Pyridine-2-carboxaldoxime and PyCOH = Pyridine-2-carboxylic acid) have been synthesized. Both complexes have been characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods; in addition, the carboxylate complex has been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The carboxylate complex is a more efficient catalyst than the oxime complex for epoxidation of olefins and shows excellent catalytic activity for the substrates: cyclooctene, cinnamyl alcohol, allyl alcohol and 1-hexene.

Reaction of 2-(4'-R-phenylazo)-4-methylphenols (R = OCH3, CH3, H, Cl, and NO2) with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] affords a family of five ruthenium(III) complexes, containing a 2-(arylazo)phenolate ligand forming a six-membered chelate ring and a tetradentate ligand formed from two 2-(arylazo) phenols via an unusual C-C coupling linki.ng the two ortho carbons of the phenyl rings in the arylazo fragment. A similar reaction with 2-(2'-methylphenylazo)-4-methylphenol with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] has afforded a similar complex, in which one 2-(2'-methylphenylazo)-4-methylphenolate ligand is coordinated forming a six-membered chelate ring, and the other two ligands have undergone the C-C coupling reaction, and the coupled species is coordinated as a tetradentate ligand forming a five-membered N,O-chelate ring, a nine-membered N,N-chelate ring, and another five-membered chelate ring. Reaction of 2-(2',6'-dimethylphenylazo)-4-methylphenol with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] has afforded a complex in which two 2-(2',6'-dimethylphenylazo)-4-methylphenols are coordinated as bidentate N,O-donors forming five- and six-membered chelate rings, while the third one has undergone cleavage across the N=N bond, and the phenolate fragment, thus generated, remains coordinated to the metal center in the iminosemiquinonate form. Structures of four selected complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The first six complexes are one-electron paramagnetic and show rhombic ESR spectra. The last complex is diamagnetic and shows characteristic H-1 NMR signals. All the complexes show intense charge-transfer transitions in the visible region and a Ru(III)-Ru(IV) oxidation on the positive side of SCE and a Ru(III)-Ru(II) reduction on the negative side.

Reaction of 2-(2'-carboxyphenylazo)-4-methylphenol (H2L) with [M(PPh3)(2)Cl-2] (M = Pd, Pt) affords mixed-ligand complexes of type [M(PPh3)(L)]. Structures of both the complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Both the complexes are square planar, where the 2-(2'-carboxyphenylazo)-4-methylphenol is coordinated to the metal center, via dissociation of the two acidic protons, as a dianionic tridentate O,N,O-donor, and the fourth position is occupied by the triphenylphosphine. These complexes show intense MLCT transitions in the visible region.
