Available geological calibration sites used to estimate the rate at which cosmogenic 3He is produced at the Earth’s surface are mostly clustered in medium to high latitudes. Moreover, most of them have exposure histories shorter than tens of thousands of years. This lack of sites prevents a qualitative assessment of available production models used to convert cosmogenic 3He concentrations into exposure ages and/or denudation rates. It thus limits our ability to take into account the atmospheric, geomagnetic and solar modulation conditions that might have affected the production of cosmogenic nuclides in the past for longer exposure histories and in low latitude regions. We present the cosmogenic 3He production rate inferred from a new geological calibration site located in northern Chile. Five samples were collected on the surface of the largest and best-preserved lava flow of the San Pedro volcano (21.934°S-68.510°W- 3390 m a.s.l), which displays pristine crease-structure features. 40Ar/39Ar dating yield a reliable plateau age of 107±12 ka for the eruption of this lava flow. Eight pyroxene aliquots separated from the surface samples yield a weighted average cosmogenic 3He concentration of 99.3±1.2 Mat.g-1 from which a local cosmogenic 3He production rate of 928±101 at.g-1.yr-1 is calculated. The local production rate is then scaled to a sea level high latitude (SLHL) reference position using different combinations of geographic spatialization schemes, atmosphere models and geomagnetic field reconstructions, yielding SLHL production rates between 103±11 and 130±14 at.g-1.yr-1 consistent with the most recent estimates available from the literature. Finally, we use the same scaling frameworks to re-evaluate the mean global-scale cosmogenic 3He production rate in olivine and pyroxene minerals at 120±16 at.g-1.yr-1 from the compilation of previously published calibration datasets.

A new method is presented to generate reduced order models (ROMs) in Fluid Dynamics problems of industrial interest. The method is based on the expansion of the flow variables in a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) basis, calculated from a limited number of snapshots, which are obtained via Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Then, the POD-mode amplitudes are calculated as minimizers of a properly defined overall residual of the equations and boundary conditions. The method includes various ingredients that are new in this field. The residual can be calculated using only a limited number of points in the flow field, which can be scattered either all over the whole computational domain or over a smaller projection window. The resulting ROM is both computationally efficient(reconstructed flow fields require, in cases that do not present shock waves, less than 1 % of the time needed to compute a full CFD solution) and flexible(the projection window can avoid regions of large localized CFD errors).Also, for problems related with aerodynamics, POD modes are obtained from a set of snapshots calculated by a CFD method based on the compressible Navier Stokes equations and a turbulence model (which further more includes some unphysical stabilizing terms that are included for purely numerical reasons), but projection onto the POD manifold is made using the inviscid Euler equations, which makes the method independent of the CFD scheme. In addition, shock waves are treated specifically in the POD description, to avoid the need of using a too large number of snapshots. Various definitions of the residual are also discussed, along with the number and distribution of snapshots, the number of retained modes, and the effect of CFD errors. The method is checked and discussed on several test problems that describe (i) heat transfer in the recirculation region downstream of a backwards facing step, (ii) the flow past a two-dimensional airfoil in both the subsonic and transonic regimes, and (iii) the flow past a three-dimensional horizontal tail plane. The method is both efficient and numerically robust in the sense that the computational effort is quite small compared to CFD and results are both reasonably accurate and largely insensitive to the definition of the residual, to CFD errors, and to the CFD method itself, which may contain artificial stabilizing terms. Thus, the method is amenable for practical engineering applications. Resumen Se presenta un nuevo método para generar modelos de orden reducido (ROMs) aplicado a problemas fluidodinámicos de interés industrial. El nuevo método se basa en la expansión de las variables fluidas en una base POD, calculada a partir de un cierto número de snapshots, los cuales se han obtenido gracias a simulaciones numéricas (CFD). A continuación, las amplitudes de los modos POD se calculan minimizando un residual global adecuadamente definido que combina las ecuaciones y las condiciones de contorno. El método incluye varios ingredientes que son nuevos en este campo de estudio. El residual puede calcularse utilizando únicamente un número limitado de puntos del campo fluido. Estos puntos puede encontrarse dispersos a lo largo del dominio computacional completo o sobre una ventana de proyección. El modelo ROM obtenido es tanto computacionalmente eficiente (en aquellos casos que no presentan ondas de choque reconstruir los campos fluidos requiere menos del 1% del tiempo necesario para calcular una solución CFD) como flexible (la ventana de proyección puede escogerse de forma que evite contener regiones con errores en la solución CFD localizados y grandes). Además, en problemas aerodinámicos, los modos POD se obtienen de un conjunto de snapshots calculados utilizando un código CFD basado en la versión compresible de las ecuaciones de Navier Stokes y un modelo de turbulencia (el cual puede incluir algunos términos estabilizadores sin sentido físico que se añaden por razones puramente numéricas), aunque la proyección en la variedad POD se hace utilizando las ecuaciones de Euler, lo que hace al método independiente del esquema utilizado en el código CFD. Además, las ondas de choque se tratan específicamente en la descripción POD para evitar la necesidad de utilizar un número demasiado grande de snapshots. Varias definiciones del residual se discuten, así como el número y distribución de los snapshots,el número de modos retenidos y el efecto de los errores debidos al CFD. El método se comprueba y discute para varios problemas de evaluación que describen (i) la transferencia de calor en la región de recirculación aguas abajo de un escalón, (ii) el flujo alrededor de un perfil bidimensional en regímenes subsónico y transónico y (iii) el flujo alrededor de un estabilizador horizontal tridimensional. El método es tanto eficiente como numéricamente robusto en el sentido de que el esfuerzo computacional es muy pequeño comparado con el requerido por el CFD y los resultados son razonablemente precisos y muy insensibles a la definición del residual, los errores debidos al CFD y al método CFD en sí mismo, el cual puede contener términos estabilizadores artificiales. Por lo tanto, el método puede utilizarse en aplicaciones prácticas de ingeniería.

The traditional ballast track structures are still being used in high speed railways lines with success, however technical problems or performance features have led to non-ballast track solution in some cases. A considerable maintenance work is needed for ballasted tracks due to the track deterioration. Therefore it is very important to understand the mechanism of track deterioration and to predict the track settlement or track irregularity growth rate in order to reduce track maintenance costs and enable new track structures to be designed. The objective of this work is to develop the most adequate and efficient models for calculation of dynamic traffic load effects on railways track infrastructure, and then evaluate the dynamic effect on the ballast track settlement, using a ballast track settlement prediction model, which consists of the vehicle/track dynamic model previously selected and a track settlement law. The calculations are based on dynamic finite element models with direct time integration, contact between wheel and rail and interaction with railway cars. A initial irregularity profile is used in the prediction model. The track settlement law is considered to be a function of number of loading cycles and the magnitude of the loading, which represents the long-term behavior of ballast settlement. The results obtained include the track irregularity growth and the contact force in the final interaction of numerical simulation

This paper reports the studies carried out to develop and calibrate the optimal models for the objectives of this work. In particular, quarter bogie model for vehicle, rail-wheel contact with Lagrangian multiplier method, 2D spatial discretization were selected as the optimal decisions. Furthermore, the 3D model of coupled vehicle-track also has been developed to contrast the results obtained in the 2D model. The calculations were carried out in the time domain and envelopes of relevant results were obtained for several track profiles and speed ranges. Distributed elevation irregularities were generated based on power spectral density (PSD) distributions. The results obtained include the wheel-rail contact forces, forces transmitted to the bogie by primary suspension. The latter loads are relevant for the purpose of evaluating the performance of the infrastructure

Based on our needs, that is to say, through precise simulation of the impact phenomena that may occur inside a jet engine turbine with an explicit non-linear finite element code, four new material models are postulated. Each one of is calibrated for four high-performance alloys that can be encountered in a modern jet engine. A new uncoupled material model for high strain and ballistic is proposed. Based on a Johnson-Cook type model, the proposed formulation introduces the effect of the third deviatoric invariant by means of three different Lode angle dependent functions. The Lode dependent functions are added to both plasticity and failure models. The postulated model is calibrated for a 6061-T651 aluminium alloy with data taken from the literature. The fracture pattern predictability of the JCX material model is shown performing numerical simulations of various quasi-static and dynamic tests. As an extension of the above-mentioned model, a modification in the thermal softening behaviour due to phase transformation temperatures is developed (JCXt). Additionally, a Lode angle dependent flow stress is defined. Analysing the phase diagram and high temperature tests performed, phase transformation temperatures of the FV535 stainless steel are determined. The postulated material model constants for the FV535 stainless steel are calibrated. A coupled elastoplastic-damage material model for high strain and ballistic applications is presented (JCXd). A Lode angle dependent function is added to the equivalent plastic strain to failure definition of the Johnson-Cook failure criterion. The weakening in the elastic law and in the Johnson-Cook type constitutive relation implicitly introduces the Lode angle dependency in the elastoplastic behaviour. The material model is calibrated for precipitation hardened Inconel 718 nickel-base superalloy. The combination of a Lode angle dependent failure criterion with weakened constitutive equations is proven to predict fracture patterns of the mechanical tests performed and provide reliable results. A transversely isotropic material model for directionally solidified alloys is presented. The proposed yield function is based a single linear transformation of the stress tensor. The linear operator weighs the degree of anisotropy of the yield function. The elastic behaviour, as well as the hardening, are considered isotropic. To model the hardening, a Johnson-Cook type relation is adopted. A material vector is included in the model implementation. The failure is modelled with the Cockroft-Latham failure criterion. The material vector allows orienting the reference orientation in any other that the user may need. The model is calibrated for the MAR-M 247 directionally solidified nickel-base superalloy.

The aim of this thesis is to study the mechanisms of instability that occur in swept wings when the angle of attack increases. For this, a simplified model for the a simplified model for the non-orthogonal swept leading edge boundary layer has been used as well as different numerical techniques in order to solve the linear stability problem that describes the behavior of perturbations superposed upon this base flow. Two different approaches, matrix-free and matrix forming methods, have been validated using direct numerical simulations with spectral resolution. In this way, flow instability in the non-orthogonal swept attachment-line boundary layer is addressed in a linear analysis framework via the solution of the pertinent global (Bi-Global) PDE-based eigenvalue problem. Subsequently, a simple extension of the extended G¨ortler-H¨ammerlin ODEbased polynomial model proposed by Theofilis, Fedorov, Obrist & Dallmann (2003) for orthogonal flow, which includes previous models as particular cases and recovers global instability analysis results, is presented for non-orthogonal flow. Direct numerical simulations have been used to verify the stability results and unravel the limits of validity of the basic flow model analyzed. The effect of the angle of attack, AoA, on the critical conditions of the non-orthogonal problem has been documented; an increase of the angle of attack, from AoA = 0 (orthogonal flow) up to values close to _/2 which make the assumptions under which the basic flow is derived questionable, is found to systematically destabilize the flow. The critical conditions of non-orthogonal flows at 0 _ AoA _ _/2 are shown to be recoverable from those of orthogonal flow, via a simple analytical transformation involving AoA. These results can help to understand the mechanisms of destabilization that occurs in the attachment line of wings at finite angles of attack. Studies taking into account variations of the pressure field in the basic flow or the extension to compressible flows are issues that remain open. El objetivo de esta tesis es estudiar los mecanismos de la inestabilidad que se producen en ciertos dispositivos aerodinámicos cuando se aumenta el ángulo de ataque. Para ello se ha utilizado un modelo simplificado del flujo de base, así como diferentes técnicas numéricas, con el fin de resolver el problema de estabilidad lineal asociado que describe el comportamiento de las perturbaciones. Estos métodos; sin y con formación de matriz, se han validado utilizando simulaciones numéricas directas con resolución espectral. De esta manera, la inestabilidad del flujo de capa límite laminar oblicuo entorno a la línea de estancamiento se aborda en un marco de análisis lineal por medio del método Bi-Global de resolución del problema de valores propios en derivadas parciales. Posteriormente se propone una extensión simple para el flujo no-ortogonal del modelo polinomial de ecuaciones diferenciales ordinarias, G¨ortler-H¨ammerlin extendido, propuesto por Theofilis et al. (2003) para el flujo ortogonal, que incluye los modelos previos como casos particulares y recupera los resultados del analisis global de estabilidad lineal. Se han realizado simulaciones directas con el fin de verificar los resultados del análisis de estabilidad así como para investigar los límites de validez del modelo de flujo base utilizado. En este trabajo se ha documentado el efecto del ángulo de ataque AoA en las condiciones críticas del problema no ortogonal obteniendo que el incremento del ángulo de ataque, de AoA = 0 (flujo ortogonal) hasta valores próximos a _/2, en el cual las hipótesis sobre las que se basa el flujo base dejan de ser válidas, tiende sistemáticamente a desestabilizar el flujo. Las condiciones críticas del caso no ortogonal 0 _ AoA _ _/2 pueden recuperarse a partir del caso ortogonal mediante el uso de una transformación analítica simple que implica el ángulo de ataque AoA. Estos resultados pueden ayudar a comprender los mecanismos de desestabilización que se producen en el borde de ataque de las alas de los aviones a ángulos de ataque finitos. Como tareas pendientes quedaría realizar estudios que tengan en cuenta variaciones del campo de presión en el flujo base así como la extensión de éste al caso de flujos compresibles.

Analysis of river flow using hydraulic modelling and its implications in derived environ-mental applications are inextricably connected with the way in which the river boundary shape is represented. This relationship is scale-dependent upon the modelling resolution which in turn determines the importance of a subscale performance of the model and the way subscale (surface and flow) processes are parameterised. Commonly, the subscale behaviour of the model relies upon a roughness parameterisation whose meaning depends on the dimensionality of the hydraulic model and the resolution of the topographic represen¬tation scale. This latter is, in turn, dependent on the resolution of the computational mesh as well as on the detail of measured topographic data. Flow results are affected by this interactions between scale and subscale parameterisation according to the dimensionality approach. The aim of this dissertation is the evaluation of these interactions upon hy¬draulic modelling results. Current high resolution topographic source availability induce this research which is tackled using a suitable roughness approach according to each di¬mensionality with the purpose of the interaction assessment. A 1D HEC-RAS model, a 2D raster-based diffusion-wave model with a scale-dependent distributed roughness parame-terisation and a 3D finite volume scheme with a porosity algorithm approach to incorporate complex topography have been used. Different topographic sources are assessed using a 1D scheme. LiDAR data are used to isolate the mesh resolution from the topographic content of the DEM effects upon 2D and 3D flow results. A distributed roughness parameterisation, using a roughness height approach dependent upon both mesh resolution and topographic content is developed and evaluated for the 2D scheme. Grain-size data and fractal methods are used for the reconstruction of topography with microscale information, required for some applications but not easily available. Sensitivity of hydraulic parameters to this topographic parameterisation is evaluated in a 3D scheme at different mesh resolu¬tions. Finally, the structural variability of simulated flow is analysed and related to scale interactions. Model simulations demonstrate (i) the importance of the topographic source in a 1D models; (ii) the mesh resolution approach is dominant in 2D and 3D simulations whereas in a 1D model the topographic source and even the roughness parameterisation impacts are more critical; (iii) the increment of the sensitivity to roughness parameterisa-tion in 1D and 2D schemes with detailed topographic sources and finer mesh resolutions; and (iv) the topographic content and microtopography impact throughout the vertical profile of computed 3D velocity in a depth-dependent way, whereas 2D results are not affected by topographic content variations. Finally, the spatial analysis shows that the mesh resolution controls high resolution model scale results, roughness parameterisation control 2D simulation results for a constant mesh resolution; and topographic content and micro-topography variations impacts upon the organisation of flow results depth-dependently in a 3D scheme. Resumen La topografía juega un papel fundamental en la distribución del agua y la energía en los paisajes naturales (Beven and Kirkby 1979; Wood et al. 1997). La simulación hidráulica combinada con métodos de medición del terreno por teledetección constituyen una poderosa herramienta de investigación en la comprensión del comportamiento de los flujos de agua debido a la variabilidad de la superficie sobre la que fluye. La representación e incorporación de la topografía en el esquema hidráulico tiene una importancia crucial en los resultados y determinan el desarrollo de sus aplicaciones al campo medioambiental. Cualquier simulación es una simplificación de un proceso del mundo real, y por tanto el grado de simplificación determinará el significado de los resultados simulados. Este razonamiento es particularmente difícil de trasladar a la simulación hidráulica donde aspectos de la escala tan diferentes como la escala de los procesos de flujo y de representación del contorno son considerados conjuntamente incluso en fases de parametrización (e.g. parametrización de la rugosidad). Por una parte, esto es debido a que las decisiones de escala vienen condicionadas entre ellas (e.g. la dimensionalidad del modelo condiciona la escala de representación del contorno) y por tanto interaccionan en sus resultados estrechamente. Y por otra parte, debido a los altos requerimientos numéricos y computacionales de una representación explícita de alta resolución de los procesos de flujo y discretización de la malla. Además, previo a la modelización hidráulica, la superficie del terreno sobre la que el agua fluye debe ser modelizada y por tanto presenta su propia escala de representación, que a su vez dependerá de la escala de los datos topográficos medidos con que se elabora el modelo. En última instancia, esta topografía es la que determina el comportamiento espacial del flujo. Por tanto, la escala de la topografía en sus fases de medición y modelización (resolución de los datos y representación topográfica) previas a su incorporación en el modelo hidráulico producirá a su vez un impacto que se acumulará al impacto global resultante debido a la escala computacional del modelo hidráulico y su dimensión. La comprensión de las interacciones entre las complejas geometrías del contorno y la estructura del flujo utilizando la modelización hidráulica depende de las escalas consideradas en la simplificación de los procesos hidráulicos y del terreno (dimensión del modelo, tamaño de escala computacional y escala de los datos topográficos). La naturaleza de la aplicación del modelo hidráulico (e.g. habitat físico, análisis de riesgo de inundaciones, transporte de sedimentos) determina en primer lugar la escala del estudio y por tanto el detalle de los procesos a simular en el modelo (i.e. la dimensionalidad) y, en consecuencia, la escala computacional a la que se realizarán los cálculos (i.e. resolución computacional). Esta última a su vez determina, el detalle geográfico con que deberá representarse el contorno acorde con la resolución de la malla computacional. La parametrización persigue incorporar en el modelo hidráulico la cuantificación de los procesos y condiciones físicas del sistema natural y por tanto debe incluir no solo aquellos procesos que tienen lugar a la escala de modelización, sino también aquellos que tienen lugar a un nivel subescalar y que deben ser definidos mediante relaciones de escalado con las variables modeladas explícitamente. Dicha parametrización se implementa en la práctica mediante la provisión de datos al modelo, por tanto la escala de los datos geográficos utilizados para parametrizar el modelo no sólo influirá en los resultados, sino también determinará la importancia del comportamiento subescalar del modelo y el modo en que estos procesos deban ser parametrizados (e.g. la variabilidad natural del terreno dentro de la celda de discretización o el flujo en las direcciones laterales y verticales en un modelo unidimensional). En esta tesis, se han utilizado el modelo unidimensional HEC-RAS, (HEC 1998b), un modelo ráster bidimensional de propagación de onda, (Yu 2005) y un esquema tridimensional de volúmenes finitos con un algoritmo de porosidad para incorporar la topografía, (Lane et al. 2004; Hardy et al. 2005). La geometría del contorno viene definida por la escala de representación topográfica (resolución de malla y contenido topográfico), la cual a su vez depende de la escala de la fuente cartográfica. Todos estos factores de escala interaccionan en la respuesta del modelo hidráulico a la topografía. En los últimos años, métodos como el análisis fractal y las técnicas geoestadísticas utilizadas para representar y analizar elementos geográficos (e.g. en la caracterización de superficies (Herzfeld and Overbeck 1999; Butler et al. 2001)), están promoviendo nuevos enfoques en la cuantificación de los efectos de escala (Lam et al. 2004; Atkinson and Tate 2000; Lam et al. 2006) por medio del análisis de la estructura espacial de la variable (e.g. Bishop et al. 2006; Ju et al. 2005; Myint et al. 2004; Weng 2002; Bian and Xie 2004; Southworth et al. 2006; Pozd-nyakova et al. 2005; Kyriakidis and Goodchild 2006). Estos métodos cuantifican tanto el rango de valores de la variable presentes a diferentes escalas como la homogeneidad o heterogeneidad de la variable espacialmente distribuida (Lam et al. 2004). En esta tesis, estas técnicas se han utilizado para analizar el impacto de la topografía sobre la estructura de los resultados hidráulicos simulados. Los datos de teledetección de alta resolución y técnicas GIS también están siendo utilizados para la mejor compresión de los efectos de escala en modelos medioambientales (Marceau 1999; Skidmore 2002; Goodchild 2003) y se utilizan en esta tesis. Esta tesis como corpus de investigación aborda las interacciones de esas escalas en la modelización hidráulica desde un punto de vista global e interrelacionado. Sin embargo, la estructura y el foco principal de los experimentos están relacionados con las nociones espaciales de la escala de representación en relación con una visión global de las interacciones entre escalas. En teoría, la representación topográfica debe caracterizar la superficie sobre la que corre el agua a una adecuada (conforme a la finalidad y dimensión del modelo) escala de discretización, de modo que refleje los procesos de interés. La parametrización de la rugosidad debe de reflejar los efectos de la variabilidad de la superficie a escalas de más detalle que aquellas representadas explícitamente en la malla topográfica (i.e. escala de discretización). Corrosion of steel bars embedded in concrete has a great influence on structural performance and durability of reinforced concrete. Chloride penetration is considered to be a primary cause of concrete deterioration in a vast majority of structures. Therefore, modelling of chloride penetration into concrete has become an area of great interest. The present work focuses on modelling of chloride transport in concrete. The differential macroscopic equations which govern the problem were derived from the equations at the microscopic scale by comparing the porous network with a single equivalent pore whose properties are the same as the average properties of the real porous network. The resulting transport model, which accounts for diffusion, migration, advection, chloride binding and chloride precipitation, consists of three coupled differential equations. The first equation models the transport of chloride ions, while the other two model the flow of the pore water and the heat transfer. In order to calibrate the model, the material parameters to determine experimentally were identified. The differential equations were solved by means of the finite element method. The classical Galerkin method was employed for the pore solution flow and the heat transfer equations, while the streamline upwind Petrov Galerkin method was adopted for the transport equation in order to avoid spatial instabilities for advection dominated problems. The finite element codes are implemented in Matlab® . To retrieve a good understanding of the influence of each variable and parameter, a detailed sensitivity analysis of the model was carried out. In order to determine the diffusive and hygroscopic properties of the studied concretes, as well as their chloride binding capacity, an experimental analysis was performed. The model was successfully compared with experimental data obtained from an offshore oil platform located in Brazil. Moreover, apart from the main objectives, numerous results were obtained throughout this work. For instance, several diffusion coefficients and the relation between them are discussed. It is shown how the electric field set up between the ionic species depends on the gradient of the species’ concentrations. Furthermore, the capillary hysteresis effects are illustrated by a proposed model, which leads to the determination of several microstructure properties, such as the pore size distribution and the tortuosity-connectivity of the porous network. El fenómeno de corrosión del acero de refuerzo embebido en el hormigón ha tenido gran influencia en estructuras de hormigón armado, tanto en su funcionalidad estructural como en aspectos de durabilidad. La penetración de cloruros en el interior del hormigón esta considerada como el factor principal en el deterioro de la gran mayoría de estructuras. Por lo tanto, la modelización numérica de dicho fenómeno ha generado gran interés. El presente trabajo de investigación se centra en la modelización del transporte de cloruros en el interior del hormigón. Las ecuaciones diferenciales que gobiernan los fenómenos a nivel macroscópico se deducen de ecuaciones planteadas a nivel microscópico. Esto se obtiene comparando la red porosa con un poro equivalente, el cual mantiene las mismas propiedades de la red porosa real. El modelo está constituido por tres ecuaciones diferenciales acopladas que consideran el transporte de cloruros, el flujo de la solución de poro y la transferencia de calor. Con estas ecuaciones se tienen en cuenta los fenómenos de difusión, migración, advección, combinación y precipitación de cloruros. El análisis llevado a cabo en este trabajo ha definido los parámetros necesarios para calibrar el modelo. De acuerdo con ellas, se seleccionaron los ensayos experimentales a realizar. Las ecuaciones diferenciales se resolvieron mediante el método de elementos finitos. El método clásico de Galerkin se empleó para solucionar las ecuaciones de flujo de la solución de poro y de la transferencia de calor, mientras que el método streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin se utilizó para resolver la ecuación de transporte de cloruros con la finalidad de evitar inestabilidades espaciales en problemas con advección dominante. El código de elementos finitos está implementado en Matlab® . Con el objetivo de facilitar la comprensión del grado de influencia de cada variable y parámetro, se realizó un análisis de sensibilidad detallado del modelo. Se llevó a cabo una campaña experimental sobre los hormigones estudiados, con el objeto de obtener sus propiedades difusivas, químicas e higroscópicas. El modelo se contrastó con datos experimentales obtenidos en una plataforma petrolera localizada en Brasil. Las simulaciones numéricas corroboraron los datos experimentales. Además, durante el desarrollo de la investigación se obtuvieron resultados paralelos a los planteados inicialmente. Por ejemplo, el análisis de diferentes coeficientes de difusión y la relación entre ellos. Así como también se observó que el campo eléctrico establecido entre las especies iónicas disueltas en la solución de poro depende del gradiente de concentración de las mismas. Los efectos de histéresis capilar son expresados por el modelo propuesto, el cual conduce a la determinación de una serie de propiedades microscópicas, tales como la distribución del tamaño de poro, además de la tortuosidad y conectividad de la red porosa.

The vertical dynamic actions transmitted by railway vehicles to the ballasted track infrastructure is evaluated taking into account models with different degree of detail. In particular, we have studied this matter from a two-dimensional (2D) finite element model to a fully coupled three-dimensional (3D) multi-body finite element model. The vehicle and track are coupled via a non-linear Hertz contact mechanism. The method of Lagrange multipliers is used for the contact constraint enforcement between wheel and rail. Distributed elevation irregularities are generated based on power spectral density (PSD) distributions which are taken into account for the interaction. The numerical simulations are performed in the time domain, using a direct integration method for solving the transient problem due to the contact nonlinearities. The results obtained include contact forces, forces transmitted to the infrastructure (sleeper) by railpads and envelopes of relevant results for several track irregularities and speed ranges. The main contribution of this work is to identify and discuss coincidences and differences between discrete 2D models and continuum 3D models, as wheel as assessing the validity of evaluating the dynamic loading on the track with simplified 2D models

The study of lateral dynamics of running trains on bridges is of importance mainly for the safety of the traffic, and may be relevant for laterally compliant bridges. These studies require 3D coupled vehicle-bridge models, and consideration of wheel to rail contact, a phenomenon which is complex and costly to model in detail. We describe here a fully nonlinear coupled model, described in absolute coordinates and incorporated into a commercial finite element framework. Two applications are presented, firstly to a vehicle subject to a strong wind gust traversing a br idge, showing the relevance of the nonlinear wheel-rail contact model as well as the interaction between bridge and vehicle. The second application is to a real viaduct in a high-speed line, with a long continuous deck and tall piers with high lateral compliance. The results show the safety of the traffic as well as the relevance of considering the wind action and the nonlinear response.

An elliptic computational fluid dynamics wake model based on the actuator disk concept is used to simulate a wind turbine, approximated by a disk upon which a distribution of forces, defined as axial momentum sources, is applied on an incoming non-uniform shear flow. The rotor is supposed to be uniformly loaded with the exerted forces estimated as a function of the incident wind speed, thrust coefficient and rotor diameter. The model is assessed in terms of wind speed deficit and added turbulence intensity for different turbulence models and is validated from experimental measurements of the Sexbierum wind turbine experiment.

The paper presents research conducted in the Flow workpackage of the EU funded UPWIND project which focuses on improving models for flow within and downwind of large wind farms in complex terrain and offshore. The main activity is modelling the behaviour of wind turbine wakes in order to improve power output predictions.

Wind farms have been extensively simulated through engineering models for the estimation of wind speed and power deficits inside wind farms. These models were designed initially for a few wind turbines located in flat terrain. Other models based on the parabolic approximation of Navier Stokes equations were developed, making more realistic and feasible the operational resolution of big wind farms in flat terrain and offshore sites. These models have demonstrated to be accurate enough when solving wake effects for this type of environments. Nevertheless, few analyses exist on how complex terrain can affect the behaviour of wind farm wake flow. Recent numerical studies have demonstrated that topographical wakes induce a significant effect on wind turbines wakes, compared to that on flat terrain. This circumstance has recommended the development of elliptic CFD models which allow global simulation of wind turbine wakes in complex terrain. An accurate simplification for the analysis of wind turbine wakes is the actuator disk technique. Coupling this technique with CFD wind models enables the estimation of wind farm wakes preserving the extraction of axial momentum present inside wind farms. This paper describes the analysis and validation of the elliptical wake model CFDWake 1.0 against experimental data from an operating wind farm located in complex terrain. The analysis also reports whether it is possible or not to superimpose linearly the effect of terrain and wind turbine wakes. It also represents one of the first attempts to observe the performance of engineering models compares in large complex terrain wind farms.
