A Cip/Multi-Moment Finite Volume Method For Shallow Water Equations With Source Terms

A novel finite volume method has been presented to solve the shallow water equations. In addition to the volume-integrated average (VIA) for each mesh cell, the surface-integrated average (SIA) is also treated as the model variable and is independently predicted. The numerical reconstruction is conducted based on both the VIA and the SIA. Different approaches are used to update VIA and SIA separately. The SIA is updated by a semi-Lagrangian scheme in terms of the Riemann invariants of the shallow water equations, while the VIA is computed by a flux-based finite volume formulation and is thus exactly conserved. Numerical oscillation can be effectively avoided through the use of a non-oscillatory interpolation function. The numerical formulations for both SIA and VIA moments maintain exactly the balance between the fluxes and the source terms. 1D and 2D numerical formulations are validated with numerical experiments. A Modified Free Volume Model For Characterizing Of Rate Effect In Bulk Metallic Glasses

We investigate the plastic deformation and constitutive behaviour of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). A dimensionless Deborah number De(ID) = t(r)/t(i) is proposed to characterize the rate effect in BMGs, where t(r) is the structural relaxing characteristic time of BMGs under shear load, t(i) is the macroscopic imposed characteristic time of applied stress or the characteristic time of macroscopic deformation. The results demonstrate that the modified free volume model can characterize the strain rate effect in BMGs effectively.

Energy Dissipation In Fracture Of Bulk Metallic Glasses Via Inherent Competition Between Local Softening And Quasi-Cleavage

Compression, tension and high-velocity plate impact experiments were performed on a typical tough Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu10Ni12.5Be22.5 (Vit 1) bulk metallic glass (BMG) over a wide range of strain rates from similar to 10(-4) to 10(6) s(-1). Surprisingly, fine dimples and periodic corrugations on a nanoscale were also observed on dynamic mode I fracture surfaces of this tough Vit 1. Taking a broad overview of the fracture patterning of specimens, we proposed a criterion to assess whether the fracture of BMGs is essentially brittle or plastic. If the curvature radius of the crack tip is greater than the critical wavelength of meniscus instability [F. Spaepen, Acta Metall. 23 615 (1975); A.S. Argon and M. Salama, Mater. Sci. Eng. 23 219 (1976)], microscale vein patterns and nanoscale dimples appear on crack surfaces. However, in the opposite case, the local quasi-cleavage/separation through local atomic clusters with local softening in the background ahead of the crack tip dominates, producing nanoscale periodic corrugations. At the atomic cluster level, energy dissipation in fracture of BMGs is, therefore, determined by two competing elementary processes, viz. conventional shear transformation zones (STZs) and envisioned tension transformation zones (TTZs) ahead of the crack tip. Finally, the mechanism for the formation of nanoscale periodic corrugation is quantitatively discussed by applying the present energy dissipation mechanism.

Using wavelet transform to study the Lipschitz local singular exponent in wall turbulence

In this paper, wavelet,transform is introduced to study the Lipschitz local singular exponent for characterising the local singularity behavior of fluctuating velocity in wall turbulence. I, is found that the local singular exponent is negative when the ejections and sweeps of coherent structures occur in a turbulent boundary layer.

The characterization of plastic flow in three different bulk metallic glass systems

Plastic deformation behaviors of Zr52.5Al10Ni10Cu15Be12.5, Mg65Cu25Gd10 and Pd43Ni10Cu27P20 bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are studied by using the depth-sensing nanoindentation, macroindentation and uniaxial compression. The significant difference in plastic deformation behavior cannot be correlated to the Poisson's ratio or the ratio of shear modulus to bulk modulus of the three BMGs, but can be explained by the free volume model. It is shown that the nucleation of local shear band is easy and multiple shear bands can be activated in the Zr52.5Al10Ni10Cu15Be12.5 alloy, which exhibits a distinct plastic strain during uniaxial compression and less serrated flow during nanoindentation. Local exchange in the southern levant during the early bronze age: a political economy viewpoint

Trade and relations between the southern Levant and other regions of the Near East (mainly Egypt) during the Early Bronze Age (ca. 3,600–2,300 BC) have been the subject of many studies. Research concerning the exchange of local commodities was almost ignored or was discussed in parochial studies, focusing on specific archaeological finds. It is the intention of this paper to present the results of recent research of the exchange of commodities provided by archaeological data from excavations in the Southern Levant with regard to economic theories on the exchange-value of goods and exchange networks. Conclusions regarding the type of society and the forms of government in the Southern Levant during the Early Bronze Age are also presented.

Programa de mejora de la competitividad municipal, derivados de la planificación local en el municipio de Camoapa, departamento de Boaco

El presente estudio se realizó en el municipio de Camoapa, departamento de Boaco y tiene como fin generar insumos para mejorar la planificación actual a través del diseño de programas de mejora de la competitividad y de desarrollo empresarial. La información recolectada tiene como principal herramienta la información secundaria solicitada al gobierno local y a los principales autores del plan estratégico municipal. También se utilizó la entrevista y la encuesta para obtener información referente al grado de avance de la planificación municipal y la presencia de las diferentes instituciones en el municipio. Los aspectos evaluados fueron: rasgos distintivos del municipio, estado de la planificación local e Instituciones de incidencia en el municipio. Dentro de los rasgos distintivos del municipio, resaltan: falta de acceso a áreas productivas y el deterioro ambiental generalizado, presencia de una gran gama de instituciones dedicadas a facilitar el crédito pero no dirigido a resolver las problemáticas del sector agropecuario o posiblemente el seguimiento técnico ofrecido por estas instituciones no es el más oportuno, desempleo generalizado y la fuente principal de empleo (actividad agropecuaria) no satisface las necesidades salariales de los trabajadores, los recursos socio–culturales son los más descuidados a pesar de la gran diversidad de expresiones culturales existentes. En cuanto a la planificación local existente la limitante de apoyo parcial por parte del gobierno municipal aunque las autoridades destacan la importancia del plan estratégico; se identificaron 52 instituciones de incidencia. Derivados de la información precedente se pro pusieron los siguientes programas de competitividad: Programa de conservación de suelos y aguas, Programa de desarrollo de sistemas agrosilvopastoriles, Programa de desarrollo económico productivo, Programa de educación ambiental, agricultura de laderas y agroturismo, Programa de fomento a las expresiones culturales del municipio.
