Anisotropic metamaterials composed of 2D periodic infi- nite and finite periodic lattices of lumped inductor (L) and capacitor (C) circuits have been explored. The unique features of wave channeling on such anisotropic lattices and scattering at their interfaces and edges are reviewed and illustrated by the examples of the specific arrangements. The lattice unit cells composed of inductors and capacitors (basic mesh) as well as of assemblies comprised of double series, double parallel, and mixed parallel-series L-C circuits are discussed.

We develop two simple approaches to the construction of time operators for semigroups of continuous linear operators in Hilbert spaces provided that the generators of these semigroups are normal operators. The first approach enables us to give explicit formulas (in the spectral representations) both for the time operators and for their eigenfunctions. The other approach provides no explicit formula. However, it enables us to find necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of time operators for semigroups of continuous linear operators in separable Hilbert spaces with normal generators. Time superoperators corresponding to unitary groups are also discussed.

An analytical approach for CMOS parameter extraction which includes the effect of parasitic resistance is presented. The method is based on small-signal equivalent circuit valid in all region of operation to uniquely extract extrinsic resistances, which can be used to extend the industry standard BSIM3v3 MOSFET model for radio frequency applications. The verification of the model was carried out through frequency domain measurements of S-parameters and direct time domain measurement at 2.4 GHz in a large signal non-linear mode of operation. This paper reports on atomistic simulations of the interactions between the dominant lattice dislocations in ?-TiAl (<1 0 1] superdislocations) with all three kinds of ?/?-lamellar boundaries in polysynthetically twinned (PST) TiAl. The purpose of this study is to clarify the early stage of lamellar boundary controlled plastic deformation in PST TiAl. The interatomic interactions in our simulations are described by a bond order potential for L10-TiAl which provides a proper quantum mechanical description of the bonding. We are interested in the dislocation core geometries that the lattice produces in proximity to lamellar boundaries and the way in which these cores are affected by the elastic and atomistic effects of dislocation-lamellar boundary interaction. We study the way in which the interfaces affect the activation of ordinary dislocation and superdislocation slip inside the ?-lamellae and transfer of plastic deformation across lamellar boundaries. We find three new phenomena in the atomic-scale plasticity of PST TiAl, particularly due to elastic and atomic mismatch associated with the 60° and 120° ?/?-interfaces: (i) two new roles of the ?/?-interfaces, i.e. decomposition of superdislocations within 120° and 60° interfaces and subsequent detachment of a single ordinary dislocation and (ii) blocking of ordinary dislocations by 60° and 120° interfaces resulting in the emission of a twinning dislocation.

We present experimental results on benchmark problems in 3D cubic lattice structures with the Miyazawa-Jernigan energy function for two local search procedures that utilise the pull-move set: (i) population-based local search (PLS) that traverses the energy landscape with greedy steps towards (potential) local minima followed by upward steps up to a certain level of the objective function; (ii) simulated annealing with a logarithmic cooling schedule (LSA). The parameter settings for PLS are derived from short LSA-runs executed in pre-processing and the procedure utilises tabu lists generated for each member of the population. In terms of the total number of energy function evaluations both methods perform equally well, however. PLS has the potential of being parallelised with an expected speed-up in the region of the population size. Furthermore, both methods require a significant smaller number of function evaluations when compared to Monte Carlo simulations with kink-jump moves. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The eng-genes concept involves the use of fundamental known system functions as activation functions in a neural model to create a 'grey-box' neural network. One of the main issues in eng-genes modelling is to produce a parsimonious model given a model construction criterion. The challenges are that (1) the eng-genes model in most cases is a heterogenous network consisting of more than one type of nonlinear basis functions, and each basis function may have different set of parameters to be optimised; (2) the number of hidden nodes has to be chosen based on a model selection criterion. This is a mixed integer hard problem and this paper investigates the use of a forward selection algorithm to optimise both the network structure and the parameters of the system-derived activation functions. Results are included from case studies performed on a simulated continuously stirred tank reactor process, and using actual data from a pH neutralisation plant. The resulting eng-genes networks demonstrate superior simulation performance and transparency over a range of network sizes when compared to conventional neural models. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V.
