A many-body theory of paramagnetic Kondo insulators is described, focusing specifically on single-particle dynamics, scattering rates, dc transport and optical conductivities. This is achieved by development of a non-perturbative local moment approach to the symmetric periodic Anderson model within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. Our natural focus is the strong-coupling, Kondo lattice regime, in particular the resultant 'universal' scaling behaviour in terms of the single, exponentially small low-energy scale characteristic of the problem. Dynamics/transport on all relevant (ω, T)-scales are considered, from the gapped/activated behaviour characteristic of the low-temperature insulator through to explicit connection to single-impurity physics at high ω and/or T; and for optical conductivities emphasis is given to the nature of the optical gap, the temperature scale responsible for its destruction and the consequent clear distinction between indirect and direct gap scales. Using scaling, explicit comparison is also made to experimental results for dc transport and optical conductivities of Ce3Bi4Pt3, SmB6 and YbB12. Good agreement is found, even quantitatively; and a mutually consistent picture of transport and optics results.

Electronic and ionic conductivities of silver selenide crystal (Ag$_2+\delta$ Se) have been measured over a range of stoichiometry through the $\alpha - \beta$ transition by using solid state electrochemical techniques. In the high temperature $\beta$-phase Ag$_2$Se shows metallic behaviour of electronic conductivity for high values of $\delta$; with decrease in $\delta$, the conductivity of the material exhibits a transition. The magnitude of change in electronic conductivity at the $\alpha - \beta$ transition is also determined by stoichiometry. Ionic conductivity of the $\beta$-phase does not vary significantly with stochiometry. Ionic conductivity of the $\beta$-does not vary significantly with stoichiometry. A model to explain the observed transport properties has been suggested.

Land use and land cover changes affect the partitioning of latent and sensible heat, which impacts the broader climate system. Increased latent heat flux to the atmosphere has a local cooling influence known as `evaporative cooling', but this energy will be released back to the atmosphere wherever the water condenses. However, the extent to which local evaporative cooling provides a global cooling influence has not been well characterized. Here, we perform a highly idealized set of climate model simulations aimed at understanding the effects that changes in the balance between surface sensible and latent heating have on the global climate system. We find that globally adding a uniform 1 W m(-2) source of latent heat flux along with a uniform 1 W m(-2) sink of sensible heat leads to a decrease in global mean surface air temperature of 0.54 +/- 0.04 K. This occurs largely as a consequence of planetary albedo increases associated with an increase in low elevation cloudiness caused by increased evaporation. Thus, our model results indicate that, on average, when latent heating replaces sensible heating, global, and not merely local, surface temperatures decrease.

Numerical modeling of saturated subsurface flow and transport has been widely used in the past using different numerical schemes such as finite difference and finite element methods. Such modeling often involves discretization of the problem in spatial and temporal scales. The choice of the spatial and temporal scales for a modeling scenario is often not straightforward. For example, a basin-scale saturated flow and transport analysis demands larger spatial and temporal scales than a meso-scale study, which in turn has larger scales compared to a pore-scale study. The choice of spatial-scale is often dictated by the computational capabilities of the modeler as well as the availability of fine-scale data. In this study, we analyze the impact of different spatial scales and scaling procedures on saturated subsurface flow and transport simulations.

The present work involves a computational study of soot formation and transport in case of a laminar acetylene diffusion flame perturbed by a co nvecting line vortex. The topology of the soot contours (as in an earlier experimental work [4]) have been investigated. More soot was produced when vortex was introduced from the air si de in comparison to a fuel side vortex. Also the soot topography was more diffused in case of the air side vortex. The computational model was found to be in good agreement with the ex perimental work [4]. The computational simulation enabled a study of the various parameters affecting soot transport. Temperatures were found to be higher in case of air side vortex as compared to a fuel side vortex. In case of the fuel side vortex, abundance of fuel in the vort ex core resulted in stoichiometrically rich combustion in the vortex core, and more discrete so ot topography. Overall soot production too was low. In case of the air side vortex abundan ce of air in the core resulted in higher temperatures and more soot yield. Statistical techniques like probability density fun ction, correlation coefficient and conditional probability function were introduced to explain the transient dependence of soot yield and transport on various parameters like temperature, a cetylene concentration.

In this paper, we address a physics based closed form model for the energy band gap (E-g) and the transport electron effective mass in relaxed and strained 100] and 110] oriented rectangular Silicon Nanowire (SiNW). Our proposed analytical model along 100] and 110] directions are based on the k.p formalism of the conduction band energy dispersion relation through an appropriate rotation of the Hamiltonian of the electrons in the bulk crystal along 001] direction followed by the inclusion of a 4 x 4 Luttinger Hamiltonian for the description of the valance band structure. Using this, we demonstrate the variation in Eg and the transport electron effective mass as function of the cross-sectional dimensions in a relaxed 100] and 110] oriented SiNW. The behaviour of these two parameters in 100] oriented SiNW has further been studied with the inclusion of a uniaxial strain along the transport direction and a biaxial strain, which is assumed to be decomposed from a hydrostatic deformation along 001] with the former one. In addition, the energy band gap and the effective mass of a strained 110] oriented SiNW has also been formulated. Using this, we compare our analytical model with that of the extracted data using the nearest neighbour empirical tight binding sp(3)d(5)s* method based simulations and has been found to agree well over a wide range of device dimensions and applied strain. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of the dc magnetization and magnetotransport studies on La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 single crystals grown by the optical float zone method. The spin freezing temperature in the ac susceptibility study shifts to lower value at higher dc field and this is well described by the de Almeida-Thouless line which is the characteristic of SG behavior. The Magnetotransport study shows that the sample exhibits a huge negative MR of similar to 70% at 10 K which monotonically decreases with the increase in temperature. Besides, the magnetization and the resistivity relaxation give strong indication that the MR scales with sample's magnetization. In essence, all the present experimental findings evidence the SG behavior of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 single crystals.

We report a facile route to synthesize high quality earth abundant absorber Cu3BiS3, tailoring the band gap with the morphology manipulation and thereby analyzed the secondary phases and their role in the transport property. The sample at 48 hours reaction profile showed good semiconducting behavior, whereas other samples showed mostly a metallic behavior. Band gap was varied from 1.86 eV to 1.42 eV upon controling the reaction profile from 8 hours to 48 hours. The activation energy was calculated to be 0.102 eV. The temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) was found to be 0.03432 K-1 at 185 K. The IR photodectection properties in terms of photoresponse have been demonstrated. The high internal gain (G = 3.7 x 10(4)), responsivity (R = 3.2 x 10(4) A W-1) for 50 mW cm(-2) at 5 V make Cu3BiS3, an alternative potential absorber in meliorating the technological applications as near IR photodetectors.

In the present study, impedance and Raman spectroscopy are adopted to probe the nature and extent of disorder to correlate with transport properties in doped polypyrrole (PPy) thin-film devices, synthesized electrochemically at different temperatures. A comparative study of the impedance spectroscopy is performed on PPy devices by both experimental and simulation approach with varying extent of disorder. The impedance measurements of PPy devices are well described by introducing a constant phase element (CPE) (Q) in modified RQ circuit, which accounts for frequency dependence of dielectric response. However, for the PPy grown at lower temperature, an equivalent circuit consisting of two such RQ elements in series is used for successful modelling of the impedance results, which accounts for the depletion region near the electrode. Raman spectroscopy and the de-convoluted spectra are successfully studied to probe the variation in C=C bond stretching and distribution of conjugation length, which relates to disorder in PPy films and the interpretation is well correlated to the impedance results.

Global conservation policy is increasingly debating the feasibility of reconciling wildlife conservation and human resource requirements in land uses outside protected areas (PAs). However, there are few quantitative assessments of whether or to what extent these `wildlife-friendly' land uses fulfill a fundamental function of PAs-to separate biodiversity from anthropogenic threats. We distinguish the role of wildlife-friendly land uses as being (a) subsidiary, whereby they augment PAs with secondary habitat, or (b) substitutive, wherein they provide comparable habitat to PAs. We tested our hypotheses by investigating the influence of land use and human presence on space-use intensity of the endangered Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) in a fragmented landscape comprising PAs and wildlife-friendly land uses. We applied multistate occupancy models to spatial data on elephant occurrence to estimate and model the overall probability of elephants using a site, and the conditional probability of high-intensity use given that elephants use a site. The probability of elephants using a site regardless of intensity did not vary between PAs and wildlife-friendly land uses. However, high-intensity use declined with distance to PM, and this effect was accentuated by an increase in village density. Therefore, while wildlife-friendly land uses did play a subsidiary conservation role, their potential to substitute for PAs was offset by a strong human presence. Our findings demonstrate the need to evaluate the role of wildlife-friendly land uses in landscape-scale conservation; for species that have conflicting resource requirements with people, PAs are likely to provide crucial refuge from growing anthropogenic threats. Rapid and invasive urbanization has been associated with depletion of natural resources (vegetation and water resources), which in turn deteriorates the landscape structure and conditions in the local environment. Rapid increase in population due to the migration from rural areas is one of the critical issues of the urban growth. Urbanisation in India is drastically changing the land cover and often resulting in the sprawl. The sprawl regions often lack basic amenities such as treated water supply, sanitation, etc. This necessitates regular monitoring and understanding of the rate of urban development in order to ensure the sustenance of natural resources. Urban sprawl is the extent of urbanization which leads to the development of urban forms with the destruction of ecology and natural landforms. The rate of change of land use and extent of urban sprawl can be efficiently visualized and modelled with the help of geo-informatics. The knowledge of urban area, especially the growth magnitude, shape geometry, and spatial pattern is essential to understand the growth and characteristics of urbanization process. Urban pattern, shape and growth can be quantified using spatial metrics. This communication quantifies the urbanisation and associated growth pattern in Delhi. Spatial data of four decades were analysed to understand land over and land use dynamics. Further the region was divided into 4 zones and into circles of 1 km incrementing radius to understand and quantify the local spatial changes. Results of the landscape metrics indicate that the urban center was highly aggregated and the outskirts and the buffer regions were in the verge of aggregating urban patches. Shannon's Entropy index clearly depicted the outgrowth of sprawl areas in different zones of Delhi. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Suppression of the aggregation of proteins has tremendous implications in biology and medicine. In the pharmaceuticals industry, aggregation of therapeutically important proteins and peptides while stored, reduces the efficacy and promptness of action leading to, in many instances, intoxication of the patient by the aggregate. Here we report the effect of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) in preventing the thermal and chemical aggregation of two unrelated proteins of different size, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH, 84 kDa) and insulin (6 kDa), respectively, in physiological pH. Our principal observation is that there is a significant reduction (up to 95%) in the extent of aggregation of ADH and insulin in the presence of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs). Aggregation of these proteins at micromolar concentration is prevented using nanomolar or less amounts of gold nanoparticles which is remarkable since chaperones which prevent such aggregation in vivo are required in micromolar quantity. The prevention of aggregation of these two different proteins under two different denaturing environments has established the role of Au-NPs as a protein aggregation prevention agent. The extent of prevention increases rapidly with the increase in the size of the gold nanoparticles. Protein molecules get physisorbed on the gold nanoparticle surface and thus become inaccessible by the denaturing agent in solution. This adsorption of proteins on AuNPs has been established by a variety of techniques and assays.
