The AASHO specifications for highway bridges require that in designing a bridge, the live load must be multiplied by an impact factor for which a formula is given, dependent only upon the length of the bridge. This formula is a result of August Wohler's tests on fatigue in metals, in which he determined that metals which are subjected to large alternating loads will ultimately fail at lower stresses than those which are subjected only to continuous static loads. It is felt by some investigators that this present impact factor is not realistic, and it is suggested that a consideration of the increased stress due to vibrations caused by vehicles traversing the span would result in a more realistic impact factor than now exists. Since the current highway program requires a large number of bridges to be built, the need for data on dynamic behavior of bridges is apparent. Much excellent material has already been gathered on the subject, but many questions remain unanswered. This work is designed to investigate further a specific corner of that subject, and it is hoped that some useful light may be shed on the subject. Specifically this study hopes to correlate, by experiment on a small scale test bridge, the upper limits of impact utilizing a stationary, oscillating load to represent axle loads moving past a given point. The experiments were performed on a small scale bridge which is located in the basement of the Iowa Engineering Experiment Station. The bridge is a 25 foot simply supported span, 10 feet wide, supported by four beams with a composite concrete slab. It is assumed that the magnitude of the predominant forcing function is the same as the magnitude of the dynamic force produced by a smoothly rolling load, which has a frequency determined by the passage of axles. The frequency of passage of axles is defined as the speed of the vehicle divided by the axle spacing. Factors affecting the response of the bridge to this forcing function are the bridge stiffness and mass, which determine the natural frequency, and the effects of solid damping due to internal structural energy dissipation.

Soils consist largely of mineral particles in a wide range of sizes. It is advantageous to assign names, such as "sand", etc., to describe particles which lie between certain size limits. These names are convenient to use and give more information than merely stating that the particles fit certain size limitations. Many systems of particle-size limits have been proposed and used, and have many discrepancies. For example, depending on the system used, a term such as "sand" may designate very different materials. Since no clear-cut divisions can be made between members of a continuous series all particle-size limit schemes are arbitrary. The originators of the various systems were influenced by many factors: convenience of investigation, methods and equipment available for analysis, ease of presenting data, convenience for statistical analysis, previous work, and systems in use. The complications were further compounded because of widely varying fields of endeavor with varying background, outlook, and goals. For example, many inconsistencies are found in engineering depending on whether the size limits are used to differentiate soils, or characterize aggregates for concrete. Some of the investigators have tried to place limits to correspond with the various properties of the soil components; others were more interested in the ease and convenience of obtaining and presenting data. The purpose of this paper is to review many of the systems which have been proposed and used, and if possible, to suggest what may have been the reasons for the selection of the particle-size limits.

The most abundant clay mineral group in Iowa soils is montmorillonite, most commonly calcium-saturated (Hanway et al, 1960). The calcium montmorillonite-water system was therefore selected for detailed X-ray study. Montmorillonite is unusual among minerals in that it has an expanding lattice in the c direction. That is, upon wetting with water, the individual silicate layers separate to allow entry of water, and the mineral expands. Characteristics of this expansion are readily studied by means of X-ray diffraction: the X-ray diffraction angle gives the average layer-to-layer "d001" spacing for any given moisture condition; the sharpness of the diffraction peak is a measure of uniformity of the d001 spacing; and the intensity of the peak relates to uniformity of the d001 spacing and in addition to the electron density distribution within the repeating elements. The latter is embodied in the "structure factor".

Two goals were pursued in this research: first, to evaluate statistically some effects of sample preparation and instrument geometry on reproducibility of X-ray diffraction intensity data; and second, to develop a procedure for finding minimum peak and background counting times for a desired level of accuracy. The ratio of calcite to dolomite in limestones was determined in trials. Ultra-fine wet grinding of the limestone in porcelain impact type ball mill gave most consistent X-ray results, but caused considerable line broadening, and peaks were best measured on an area count basis. Sample spinning reduced variance about one third, and a coarse beam-medium detector slit arrangement was found to be best. An equation is developed relating coefficient of variation of a count ratio to peak and background counts. By use of the equation or graphs the minimum coefficient of variation is predicted from one fast scan, and the number and optimum arrangement of additional counting periods to reduce variation to a desired limit may be obtained. The calculated coefficient is the maximum which may be attributed to the counting statistic but does not include experimental deviations.

Water-surface-elevation profiles and peak discharges for the floods of September 15-16, 1992, in the Thompson, Weldon, and Chariton River Basins, south-central Iowa, are presented in this report. The profiles illustrate the 1992 floods along the Thompson, Weldon, Chariton, and South Fork Chariton Rivers and along Elk Creek in the south-central Iowa counties of Adair, Clarke, Decatur, Lucas, Madison, Ringgold, Union, and Wayne. Water-surface-elevation profiles for the floods of July 4, 1981, along the Chariton River in Lucas County and along the South Fork Chariton River in Wayne County also are included in the report for comparative purposes. The September 15-16, 1992, floods are the largest known peak discharges at gaging stations Thompson River at Davis City (station number 06898000) 57,000 cubic feet per second, Weldon River near Leon (station number 06898400) 76,200 cubic feet per second, Chariton River near Chariton (station number 06903400) 37,700 cubic feet per second, and South Fork Chariton River near Promise City (station number 06903700) 70,600 cubic feet per second. The peak discharges were, respectively, 1.7, 2.6, 1.4, and 2.1 times larger than calculated 100-year recurrence-interval discharges. The report provides information on flood stages and discharges and floodflow frequencies for streamflow-gaging stations in the Thompson, Weldon, and Chariton River Basins using flood information collected through 1995. Information on temporary bench marks and reference points established in the Thompson and Weldon River Basins during 1994-95, and in the Chariton River Basin during 1983-84 and 1994-95, also is included in the report. A flood history summarizes rainfall conditions and damages for floods that occurred during 1947, 1959, 1981, 1992, and 1993.

Las posibilidades del sujeto de la educación asociada a la integración de las TIC en la escuela nos lleva a pensar en el mejor de los casos en un espacio 'clase como espacio de Innovación basado en la autoría de los estudiantes, la centralidad de la comunicación y la creación, los usos colaborativos de las tecnologías para construir conocimientos compartidos, un ambiente en fin dispuesto a partir de la investigación y la auto-regulación propia de los estudiantes donde el profesor adquiere un nuevo papel de mediador y orientador del aprendizaje de los demás. Este horizonte utópico ha sido definido por autores como Buckingham (2002) como el nuevo discurso del aprendizaje horizontal y flexible asociado a las TIC. La presente investigación partiendo de la etnografía de un centro de educación secundaria donde se ha realizado una apuesta por la integración de las TIC, retoma críticamente las categorías asociadas al nuevo discurso de aprendizaje basado en las TIC desde el punto de vista de cómo se construye la subjetividad del estudiante. Estas categorías (tradicional/innovador, individual/colaborativo, relaciones horizontales/ verticales, habilidades técnicas/creativas-expresivas, pasividad/actividad, centrado en el profesor/centrado en el alumno) a menudo han sido utilizadas como lugar de llegada desde donde afirmar las bondades del trabajo a realizar mediante el uso de las TIC y su integración en el currículum (McPherson et al. 2008; Buckingham et al. 2008). Por el contrario la presente investigación las interroga desde los procesos micropolítcos cotidianos y desde las diferentes formas en que la subjetividad del sujeto estudiante se establece en el espacio de la escuela.

Two lanes of a major four-lane arterial street in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, needed reconstruction. Because of the traffic volume and the detour problem, closure of the intersections, even for 1 day was not feasible. Use of Fast Track concrete paving on the mainline portion of the project permitted achievement of the opening strength of 400 psi in less than 12 hr. Fast Track II, used for the intersections, achieved the opening strength of 350 psi in 6 to 7 hr. Flexural and compression specimens of two sections each in the Fast Track and Fast Track II sections were subjected to pulse velocity tests. Maturity curves were developed by monitoring the temperatures. Correlations were performed between the pulse velocity and flexural strength and between the maturity and flexural strength. The project established the feasibility of using Fast Track II to construct portland cement concrete pavement at night and opening the roadway to traffic the next day.

Identification of ways to enhance consistency and proper entrained air content in hardened concrete pavement has long been a goal of state highway agencies and the Federal Highway Administration. The work performed in this study was done under FHWA Work Order No: DTFH71-97-PTP-IA-47 and referred to as Project HR-1068 by the Iowa DOT. The results of this study indicate that the monitoring devices do provide both the contractor and contracting authority and are a good way of controlling the consistent rate of vibration to achieve a quality concrete pavement product. The devices allow the contractor to monitor vibrator operation effectively and consistently. The equipment proved to be reliable under all weather and paver operating conditions. This type of equipment adds one more way of improving the consistency and quality of the concrete pavement.

A linear programming model is used to optimally assign highway segments to highway maintenance garages using existing facilities. The model is also used to determine possible operational savings or losses associated with four alternatives for expanding, closing and/or relocating some of the garages in a study area. The study area contains 16 highway maintenance garages and 139 highway segments. The study recommends alternative No. 3 (close Tama and Blairstown garages and relocate new garage at Jct. U.S. 30 and Iowa 21) at an annual operational savings of approximately $16,250. These operational savings, however, are only the guidelines for decisionmakers and are subject to the required assumptions of the model used and limitations of the study.

The purpose of this study is to provide recommendations relative to the location and construction needs for highway maintenance facilities within the state of Iowa. These recommendations were to be developed with consideration being given to the public's expectations and priorities for highway maintenance services. As a part of the study effort, a review was made of the methods used by other states to deliver highway maintenance services. To accomplish the study, Wilbur Smith Associates undertook a series of tasks. These efforts included gathering of data and information to characterize the various maintenance programs and the delivery of maintenance and operations services by the Department. We researched the delivery of highway maintenance services in other states. Interviews with Iowa DOT maintenance personnel were accomplished. A schedule of public hearings was developed and ten hearings were held. All the information was integrated and various analyses were made. From these analyses we drew conclusions and developed recommendations.

En la primera parte de este trabajo se presentan algunas reflexiones en torno a las recientes políticas educativas estatales de incorporación de las TIC en los centros educativos siguiendo el modelo de un ordenador por alumno. En una segunda parte, se aborda la concreción en Cataluña del proyecto Escuela 2.0 y la valoración que realiza el profesorado de esta comunidad autónoma de los entornos 1x1.

This project examines similarities and differences between the automated condition data collected on and off county paved roads and the manual condition data collected by Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) staff in 2000 and 2001. Also, the researchers will provide staff support to the advisory committee in exploring other options to the highway need process. The results show that the automated condition data can be used in a converted highway needs process with no major differences between the two methods. Even though the foundation rating difference was significant, the foundation rating weighting factor in HWYNEEDS is minimal and should not have a major impact. In terms of RUTF formula based distribution, the results clearly show the superiority of the condition-based analysis compared to the non-condition based. That correlation can be further enhanced by adding more distress variables to the analysis.
