IODP Hole U1309D (Atlantis Massif, Mid-Atlantic Ridge 30°N) is the second deepest hole drilled into slow spread gabbroic lithosphere. It comprises 5.4% of olivine-rich troctolites (~ > 70% olivine), possibly the most primitive gabbroic rocks ever drilled at mid-ocean ridges. We present the result of an in situ trace element study carried out on a series of olivine-rich troctolites, and neighbouring troctolites and gabbros, from olivine-rich intervals in Hole U1309D. Olivine-rich troctolites display poikilitic textures; coarse-grained subhedral to medium-grained rounded olivine crystals are included into large undeformed clinopyroxene and plagioclase poikiloblasts. In contrast, gabbros and troctolites have irregularly seriate textures, with highly variable grain sizes, and locally poikilitic clinopyroxene oikocrysts in troctolites. Clinopyroxene is high Mg# augite (Mg# 87 in olivine-rich troctolites to 82 in gabbros), and plagioclase has anorthite contents ranging from 77 in olivine-rich troctolites to 68 in gabbros. Olivine has high forsterite contents (82-88 in olivine-rich troctolites, to 78-83 in gabbros) and is in Mg-Fe equilibrium with clinopyroxene. Clinopyroxene cores and plagioclase are depleted in trace elements (e.g., Ybcpx ~ 5-11 * Chondrite), they are in equilibrium with the same MORB-type melt in all studied rock-types. These compositions are not consistent with the progressively more trace element enriched (evolved) compositions expected from olivine rich primitive products to gabbros in a MORB cumulate sequence. They indicate that clinopyroxene and plagioclase crystallized concurrently, after melts having the same trace element composition, consistent with crystallization in an open system with a buffered magma composition. The slight trace element enrichments and lower Cr contents observed in clinopyroxene rims and interstitial grains results from crystallization of late-stage differentiated melts, probably indicating the closure of the magmatic system. In contrast to clinopyroxene and plagioclase, olivine is not in equilibrium with MORB, but with a highly fractionated depleted melt, similar to that in equilibrium with refractory oceanic peridotites, thus possibly indicating a mantle origin. In addition, textural relationships suggest that olivine was in part assimilated by the basaltic melts after which clinopyroxene and plagioclase crystallized (impregnation). These observations suggest a complex crystallization history in an open system involving impregnation by MORB-type melt(s) of an olivine-rich rock or mush. The documented magmatic processes suggest that olivine-rich troctolites were formed in a zone with large magmatic transfer and accumulation, similar to the mantle-crust transition zone documented in ophiolites and at fast spreading ridges.

A collection of dredge samples from the Hunter Fracture Zone includes holocrystalline massive and cumulose basic and ultrabasic rocks and volcanites of the ophiolite complex: from basalts to rhyolites. The ultrabasic rocks are largely serpentinized harzburgites and lherzolites; their relict mineralogy is typical of peridotite considered to be the refractory residue of partial melting of the mantle. Cumulate textured ultramafic rocks probably are related to the cumulate gabbro and granodiorite rather than to the residual mantle material. The gabbroic rocks are dominantly cumulate textured Pl-Opx-Cpx±Ol gabbronorite and Pl-Cpx±Ol gabbros; the mineral features of these rocks are the result of their crystallization at moderate pressure (in a moderate level magma chamber). The massive Pl-Cpx±Ol gabbros are less common. Green and brown-green Ca-amphibole has partially or totally replaced the clinopyroxene in many samples. There is an overlap in mineral chemistry between the cumulate rocks and the Opx-Cpx-Pl volcanic rocks and boninites. It is interpreted as an indication that the cumulate rocks were co-genetic with Opx-Cpx-Pl volcanic rocks and that they both constitute remnants of an island arc volcanic-plutonic series. The petrologic evidence indicates that ophiolite gabbroic rocks were derived from an island-arc rather than from a mid-ocean ridge.

The basement cored at Site 1201 (west Philippine Basin) during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 195 consists of a 91-m-thick sequence of basalts, mostly pillow lavas and perhaps one sheet lava flow, with a few intercalations of hyaloclastite and interpillow sedimentary material. Hydrothermal alteration pervasively affected the basalt sequence, giving rise to a variety of secondary minerals such as K-Fe-Mg-clay minerals, oxyhydroxides and clay minerals mixtures, natrolite group zeolites, analcite, alkali feldspar, and carbonate. The primary minerals of pillow and sheet basalts that survived the intense hydrothermal alteration were investigated by electron microprobe with the aim of characterizing their chemical composition and variability. The primary minerals are mostly plagioclase, ranging in composition from bytownite through labradorite to andesine, chromian-magnesian-diopside, and spinels, both Ti magnetite (partially maghemitized) and chromian spinel. Overall, the chemical features of the primary minerals of Site 1201 basalts correspond to the primitive character of the bulk rocks, suggesting that the parent magma of these basalts was a mafic tholeiitic magma that most likely only suffered limited fractional crystallization and crystallized at high temperatures (slightly below 1200°C) and under increasing fO2 conditions. The major element composition of clinopyroxene suggests a backarc affinity of the mantle source of Site 1201 basement.

The Duolong porphyry Cu-Au deposit (5.4 Mt at 0.72% Cu, 41 t at 0.23 g/t Au), which is related to the granodiorite porphyry and the quartz-diorite porphyry from the Bangongco copper belt in central Tibet, formed in a continental arc setting. Here, we present the zircon U-Pb ages, geochemical whole-rock, Sr-Nd whole-rock and zircon in-situ Hf-O isotopic data for the Duolong porphyries. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) zircon U-Pb analyses for six samples yielded consistent ages of ~118 Ma, indicating a Cretaceous formation age. The Duolong porphyries (SiO2 of 58.81-68.81 wt.%, K2O of 2.90-5.17 wt.%) belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series. They show light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched distribution patterns with (La/Yb)N = 6.1-11.7, enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Cs, Rb, and Ba) and depletion of high field strength elements (e.g., Nb), with negative Ti anomalies. All zircons from the Duolong porphyries share relatively similar Hf-O isotopic compositions (d18O=5.88-7.27 per mil; eHf(t)=3.6-7.3), indicating that they crystallized from a series of cogenetic melts with various degrees of fractional crystallization. This, along with the general absence of older inherited zircons, rules out significant crustal contamination during zircon growth. The zircons are mostly enriched in d18O relative to mantle values, indicating the involvement of an 18O-enriched crustal source in the generation of the Duolong porphyries. Together with the presence of syn-mineralization basaltic andesite, the mixing between silicic melts derived from the lower crust and evolved H2O-rich mafic melts derived from the metsomatizied mantle wedge, followed by subsequent fractional crystallization (FC) and minor crustal contamination in the shallow crust, could well explain the petrogenesis of the Duolong porphyries. Significantly, the hybrid melts possibly inherited the arc magma characteristics of abundant F, Cl, Cu, and Au elements and high oxidation state, which contributed to the formation of the Duolong porphyry Cu-Au deposit.

Sr contents in phosphorites on shelves of the Southwest Africa, and of Chile and Peru increase with degree of their lithification, from 0.05 to 0.28% and from 0.13 to 0.16% respectively. Phosphorites from Pacific submarine seamounts have the average Sr content 0.11%, and bone phosphate from Pacific floor 0.13%. Shelf phosphorites are characterized by high correlation coefficients between Sr and P2O5 (R = +0.82) and constant Sr/P2O5 ratio (0.0084). In phosphorites from submarine sea-mounts and in bones from the ocean floor Sr/P2O5 ratio is only a little higher than a half of that in shelf phosphorites. This indicates specific and different genesis of phosphorites from submarine mountains. Ba content in recent phosphorites from the shelf of the Southwest Africa changes with increasing degree of lithification. At first their Ba contents rise from 0.031 to 0.188%, then they diminish to 0.016%, and thereafter again increase to 0.070%. This is due to successive predominance of one of the following processes going in different directions: co-precipitation with phosphate gels or formation of true separate Ba phase, loss of phosphate in crystallization and "self-purification" of concentrations, and surface adsorption. In Peru-Chile shelf phosphorites the average Ba content is 0.017%, in phosphorites from Pacific seamounts 0.192%, and in fossilized bones 0.010%.

Not all boninites are glassy lavas. Those of Hole 458 in the Mariana fore-arc region are submarine pillow lavas and more massive flows in which glass occurs only in quenched margins. Pillow and flow interiors have abundant Plagioclase spherulites, microlites, or even larger crystals but can be recognized as boninites by (1) occurrence of bronzite, (2) presence of augite-bronzite microphenocryst intergrowths, and (3) reversal of the usual basaltic groundmass crystallization sequence of plagioclase-augite to augite-plagioclase. The latter is accentuated by sharply contrasting augite and Plagioclase crystal morphologies near pillow margins, a consequence of rapid cooling rates. This crystallization sequence appears to be a consequence of boninites having higher SiO2 and Mg/Mg + Fe than basalts but lower CaO/Al2O3. Microprobe data are used to illustrate the effects of rapid cooling on the compositions of pyroxene and microphenocrysts in a glassy boninite sample and to estimate temperatures of crystallization of coexisting bronzite and augite. A range from 1320°C to 1200°C is calculated with an average of 1250°C. This is higher by 120°-230° than the known range for western Pacific arc tholeiites and by over 300° than for calc-alkalic andesites. Boninites of Hole 458 lack olivine and clinoenstatite but are otherwise chemically and petrographically similar to boninites that have these minerals. In order to distinguish the two types, the Hole 458 lavas are here termed boninites and the others are termed olivine boninites. Arc tholeiite pillow lavas from Holes 458 and 459B are briefly described and their textures compared to fractionated, moderately iron-enriched, abyssal tholeiites. Massive tholeiite flows contain striking quartz-alkali feldspar micrographic intergrowths with coarsely spherulitic textures resulting from in situ magmatic differentiation. Such intergrowths are rare in massive abyssal tholeiites cored by DSDP and probably occur here because arc tholeiites have higher normative quartz at comparable degrees of iron enrichment - a result of higher oxygen fugacities and earlier separation of titanomagnetite - than abyssal tholeiites.

Phase equilibria simulations were performed on naturally quenched basaltic glasses to determine crystallization conditions prior to eruption of magmas at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) east of Ascension Island (7°11°S).The results indicate that midocean ridge basalt (MORB) magmas beneath different segments of the MAR have crystallized over a wide range of pressures (100-900MPa). However, each segment seems to have a specific crystallization history. Nearly isobaric crystallization conditions (100-300MPa) were obtained for the geochemically enriched MORB magmas of the central segments, whereas normal (N)-MORB magmas of the bounding segments are characterized by polybaric crystallization conditions (200-900MPa). In addition, our results demonstrate close to anhydrous crystallization conditions of N-MORBs, whereas geochemically enriched MORBs were successfully modeled in the presence of 0.4-1wt% H2O in the parental melts. These estimates are in agreement with direct (Fourier transform IR) measurements of H2O abundances in basaltic glasses and melt inclusions for selected samples. Water contents determined in the parental melts are in the range 0.04-0.09 and 0.30-0.55 wt% H2O for depleted and enriched MORBs, respectively. Our results are in general agreement (within ±200MPa) with previous approaches used to evaluate pressure estimates in MORB. However, the determination of pre-eruptive conditions of MORBs, including temperature and water content in addition to pressure, requires the improvement of magma crystallization models to simulate liquid lines of descent in the presence of small amounts of water. Seventeen basalts from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 183 to the Kerguelen Plateau (KP) were analyzed for the platinum-group elements (PGEs: Ir, Ru, Rh, Pt, and Pd), and 15 were analyzed for trace elements. Relative concentrations of the PGEs ranged from ~0.1 (Ir, Ru) to ~5 (Pt) times primitive mantle. These relatively high PGE abundances and fractionated patterns are not accounted for by the presence of sulfide minerals; there are only trace sulfides present in thin-section. Sulfur saturation models applied to the KP basalts suggest that the parental magmas may have never reached sulfide saturation, despite large degrees of partial melting (~30%) and fractional crystallization (~45%). First order approximations of the fractionation required to produce the KP basalts from an ~30% partial melt of a spinel peridotite were determined using the PELE program. The model was adapted to better fit the physical and chemical observations from the KP basalts, and requires an initial crystal fractionation stage of at least 30% olivine plus Cr-spinel (49:1), followed by magma replenishment and fractional crystallization (RFC) that included clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and titanomagnetite (15:9:1). The low Pd values ([Pd/Pt]_pm < 1.7) for these samples are not predicted by currently available Kd values. These Pd values are lowest in samples with relatively higher degrees of alteration as indicated by petrographic observations. Positive anomalies are a function of the behavior of the PGEs; they can be reproduced by Cr-spinel, and titanomagnetite crystallization, followed by titanomagnetite resorption during the final stages of crystallization. Our modeling shows that it is difficult to reproduce the PGE abundances by either depleted upper or even primitive mantle sources. Crustal contamination, while indicated at certain sites by the isotopic compositions of the basalts, appears to have had a minimal affect on the PGEs. The PGE abundances measured in the Kerguelen Plateau basalts are best modeled by melting a primitive mantle source to which was added up to 1% of outer core material, followed by fractional crystallization of the melt produced. This reproduces both the abundances and patterns of the PGEs in the Kerguelen Plateau basalts. An alternative model for outer core PGE abundances requires only 0.3% of outer core material to be mixed into the primitive mantle source. While our results are clearly model dependent, they indicate that an outer core component may be present in the Kerguelen plume source.

TbxFe1−x thin films deposited by sputtering on Mo were investigated structurally and magnetically. The microstructure consists of TbFe2 nanoparticles embedded in an amorphous matrix, and the Tb content can be correlated with an increase in the volume of these nanoparticles. Similar microstructure and behavior were found when TbFe2 was deposited on glass and on a Pt buffer layer. Nevertheless, thermal treatments promote a different effect, depending on the mechanical stiffness of the buffer layer. The layers deposited on Mo, a rigid material, show crystalline TbFe2 together with α-Tb phase upon thermal treatment. In contrast, TbFe2 does not crystallize properly on Pt, a material with a lower stiffness than Mo. Intermediate results were observed on the film deposited on glass. Experimental results show the impact of the buffer stiffness on the crystallization process. Moreover, the formation of α-Tb appears to be fundamental to crystallized TbFe2 on layers deposited on rigid buffers

The obtaining of multiferroicBiFeO3 as a pure single-phase product is particularly complex since the formation of secondary phases seems to be unavoidable. The process by which these secondary impurities are formed is studied by analyzing the diffusion and solidstate reactivity of the Bi2O3–Fe2O3 system. Experimental evidence is reported which indicates that the progressive diffusion of Bi3+ ions into the Fe2O3 particles governs the solidstatesynthesis of the perovskite BiFeO3 phase. However a competition is established between the diffusion process which tends to complete the formation of BiFeO3, and the crystallization of stable Bi2Fe4O9 mullite crystals, which tend to block that formation reaction.

The development of crystalline lamellae in ultra-thin layers of poly(ethylene terephthalate) PET confined between polycarbonate (PC) layers in an alternating assembly is investigated as a function of layer thickness by means of X-ray diffraction methods. Isothermal crystallization from the glassy state is in-situ followed by means of small-angle X-ray diffraction. It is found that the reduced size of the PET layers influences the lamellar nanostructure and induces a preferential lamellar orientation. Two lamellar populations, flat-on and edge-on, are found to coexist in a wide range of crystallization temperatures (Tc = 117–150 °C) and within layer thicknesses down to 35 nm. Flat-on lamellae appear at a reduced crystallization rate with respect to bulk PET giving rise to crystals of similar dimensions separated by larger amorphous regions. In addition, a narrower distribution of lamellar orientations develops when the layer thickness is reduced or the crystallization temperature is raised. In case of edge-on lamellae, crystallization conditions also influence the development of lamellar orientation; however, the latter is little affected by the reduced size of the layers. Results suggest that flat-on lamellae arise as a consequence of spatial confinement and edge-on lamellae could be generated due to the interactions with the PC interface.
