Most critical analyses assess citizenship-deprivation policies against international human rights and domestic rule of law standards, such as prevention of statelessness, non-arbitrariness with regard to justifications and judicial remedies, or non-discrimination between different categories of citizens. This report considers instead from a political theory perspective how deprivation policies reflect specific conceptions of political community. We distinguish four normative conceptions of the grounds of membership in a political community that apply to decisions on acquisition and loss of citizenship status: i) a ‘State discretion’ view, according to which governments should be as free as possible in pursuing State interests when determining citizenship status; ii) an ‘individual choice’ view, according to which individuals should be as free as possible in choosing their citizenship status; iii) an ‘ascriptive community’ view, according to which both State and individual choices should be minimised through automatic determination of membership based on objective criteria such as the circumstances of birth; and iv) a ‘genuine link’ view, according to which the ties of individuals to particular States determine their claims to inclusion and against deprivation while providing at the same time objections against including individuals without genuine links. We argue that most citizenship laws combine these four normative views in different ways, but that from a democratic perspective the ‘genuine link’ view is normatively preferable to the others. The report subsequently examines five general grounds for citizenship withdrawal – threats to public security, non-compliance with citizenship duties, flawed acquisition, derivative loss and loss of genuine links – and considers how the four normative views apply to withdrawal provision motivated by these concerns. The final section of the report examines whether EU citizenship provides additional reasons for protection against Member States’ powers of citizenship deprivation. We suggest that, in addition to fundamental rights protection through EU law and protection of free movement rights, three further arguments could be invoked: toleration of dual citizenship in a political union, prevention of unequal conditions for loss among EU citizens, and the salience of genuine links to the EU itself rather than merely to one of its Member States.

Negli ultimi decenni, le tecnologie e i prodotti informatici sono diventati pervasivi e sono ora una parte essenziale delle nostre vite. Ogni giorno ci influenzano in maniera più o meno esplicita, cambiando il nostro modo di vivere e i nostri comportamenti più o meno intenzionalmente. Tuttavia, i computer non nacquero inizialmente per persuadere: essi furono costruiti per gestire, calcolare, immagazzinare e recuperare dati. Non appena i computer si sono spostati dai laboratori di ricerca alla vita di tutti i giorni, sono però diventati sempre più persuasivi. Questa area di ricerca è chiamata pesuasive technology o captology, anche definita come lo studio dei sistemi informatici interattivi progettati per cambiare le attitudini e le abitudini delle persone. Nonostante il successo crescente delle tecnologie persuasive, sembra esserci una mancanza di framework sia teorici che pratici, che possano aiutare gli sviluppatori di applicazioni mobili a costruire applicazioni in grado di persuadere effettivamente gli utenti finali. Tuttavia, il lavoro condotto dal Professor Helal e dal Professor Lee al Persuasive Laboratory all’interno dell’University of Florida tenta di colmare questa lacuna. Infatti, hanno proposto un modello di persuasione semplice ma efficace, il quale può essere usato in maniera intuitiva da ingegneri o specialisti informatici. Inoltre, il Professor Helal e il Professor Lee hanno anche sviluppato Cicero, un middleware per dispositivi Android basato sul loro precedente modello, il quale può essere usato in modo molto semplice e veloce dagli sviluppatori per creare applicazioni persuasive. Il mio lavoro al centro di questa tesi progettuale si concentra sull’analisi del middleware appena descritto e, successivamente, sui miglioramenti e ampliamenti portati ad esso. I più importanti sono una nuova architettura di sensing, una nuova struttura basata sul cloud e un nuovo protocollo che permette di creare applicazioni specifiche per smartwatch.

Published stable isotope records in marine carbonate are characterized by a positive d18O excursion associated with a negative d13C shift during the early Maastrichtian. However, the cause and even the precise timing of these excursions remain uncertain. We have generated high-resolution foraminiferal stable isotope and gray-scale records for the latest Campanian to early Maastrichtian (73-68 Ma) at two Ocean Drilling Program sites, 525 (Walvis Ridge) and 690 (Weddell Sea). We demonstrate that the negative d13C excursion is decoupled from the d18O increase with a lag of about 600 ka. Our d13C records (both planktic and benthic) show an amplitude for the negative excursion of 0.7 per mill that falls between about 72.1 and 70.7 Ma. Our planktic d18O records indicate an overall increase of 1.2 per mill from 73 to 68 Ma at Site 690, whereas at Site 525 they record a slightly smaller increase (1 per mill) that peaks around 70.1 Ma with decreasing values thereafter. Our benthic d18O data indicate an increase of 1.5 per mill at Site 525 and 0.7 per mill at Site 690 between about 71.4 and 69.9 Ma. Benthic d18O values show different baseline values at the two sites before and after the excursion, but the larger increase at Site 525 means that the values attained at the peak of the excursion are similar at the two sites. We interpret this observation in terms of water mass changes. The excursion is interpreted to reflect a cooling of bottom waters in response to the strengthening contribution of intermediate- to deep-water production in the high southern latitudes rather than increased ice volume. The associated carbon cycle perturbations that we observe are interpreted to reflect a weakening of surface water stratification and increased productivity, as supported by our gray value data.
