There has been an increase in the use of cognitive frameworks in occupational therapy with children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). Investigations into the utility of one such cognitive approach, namely Cognitive Orientation to (daily) Occupational Performance (CO-OP), with children with DCD have shown the intervention to be effective with children over 7 years. However, there has been limited research into its utility with younger children. This paper presents two case studies to demonstrate the use of CO-OP with children aged 5-7 years. Two boys with DCD engaged in 10 sessions of CO-OP. These younger children were found to be able to use the global framework (Goal, Plan, Do, Check) to improve their task performance, to develop plans using domain-specific strategies and to engage in checking strategies. Issues relating to attention, motivation and goal setting are discussed in the context of the two case studies.

The search for orally effective drugs for the treatment of iron overload disorders is an important goal in improving the health of patients suffering diseases such as beta-thalassemia major. Herein, we report the syntheses and characterization of some new members of a series of N-aroyl-N'-picolinoyl hydrazine chelators (the H2IPH analogs). Both 1:1 and 1:2 Fe-III:L complexes were isolated and the crystal structures of Fe(HPPH)Cl-2, Fe(4BBPH)Cl-2, Fe(HAPH)(APH) and Fe(H3BBPH)(3BBPH) were determined (H2PPH=N,N'-bis-picolinoyl hydrazine; H(2)APH=N-4-aminobenzoyl-N'-picolinoyl hydrazine, H(2)3BBPH=N-3-bromobenzoyl-N'-picolinoylhydrazine and H(2)4BBPH=N-(4-bromobenzoyl)-N'-(picolinoyl)hydrazine). In each case, a tridentate N,N,O coordination mode of each chelator with Fe was observed. The Fe-III complexes of these ligands have been synthesized and their structural, spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization are reported. Five of these new chelators, namely H2BPH (N-(benzoyl)-N'-(picolinoyl)hydrazine), H2TPH (N-(2-thienyl)-N'-(picolinoyl)-hydrazine), H2PPH, H(2)3BBPH and H(2)4BBPH, showed high efficacy at mobilizing Fe-59 from cells and inhibiting Fe-59 uptake from the serum Fe transport protein, transferrin (Tf). Indeed, their activity was much greater than that found for the chelator in current clinical use, desferrioxamine (DFO), and similar to that observed for the orally active chelator, pyridoxal isonicotinoyl hydrazone (H2PIH). The ability of the chelators to inhibit Fe-59 uptake could not be accounted for by direct chelation of Fe-59-Tf. The most effective chelators also showed low antiproliferative activity which was similar to or less than that observed with DFO, which is important in terms of their potential use as agents to treat Fe-overload disease.

Background. Older adults typically exhibit dramatic reductions in the rate of force development and deficits in the execution of rapid coordinated movements. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the association between the reduced rate of force development exhibited by older adults and the ability to coordinate groups of muscles. Methods. The performance of a visually guided aiming task that required the generation of isometric torque about the elbow joint was compared in 10 young adults (age range, 19 to 29 years) and 10 older adults (age range, 65 to 80 years). Participants were required to exert isometric torque in flexion, extension, pronation, or supination, or in combinations of these directions, to reach a target in minimum time. Surface electromyograms were obtained from the biceps brachii, triceps brachii, brachioradialis, and flexor carpi radialis. Results. Older participants exhibited slower target acquisition times compared with young participants (p < .05), with the extent of the differences between the groups varying markedly between target locations. Conclusions. The impairment in performance, although partially attributable to a general decline in the ability to produce force rapidly, was also affected by the requirements for muscular coordination. At the neuromuscular level, differences between the young and the elderly were expressed most prominently in the bifunctional muscle biceps brachii and in certain temporal aspects of muscular coordination.

Participation in leisure-time activities, self-concept perceptions and individual dispositional goal orientations were examined as mediators of relationships between physical coordination and self-evaluations of life satisfaction and general self-concept for 173 boys aged 10-13 years. Participants completed seven-day activity diaries and 12-month retrospective recall questionnaires recording participation in leisure-time activities. Self-report measures of self-concept, global life satisfaction and dispositional goal orientations were also completed. Results showed that boys with moderate to severe physical coordination difficulties had significantly lower self-concept perceptions of physical ability and appearance, peer and parent relations and general self-concept, as well as lower life satisfaction than boys with medium to high levels of physical coordination. The relationships between boys' physical coordination and their self-perceptions of life satisfaction and general self-concept were significantly influenced by individual self-concept appraisals of physical ability and appearance, peer and parent relations. Adopting task-oriented goals was found to positively change the relationship between physical coordination and both general self-concept and life satisfaction. Team sport participation positively mediated the relationship between physical coordination and life satisfaction. The potential for team sport participation and adoption of task-oriented goals to influence life satisfaction for boys with differing levels of physical coordination was discussed. The present study investigates the coordination between two people oscillating handheld pendulums, with a special emphasis on the influence of the mechanical properties of the effector systems involved. The first part of the study is an experiment in which eight pairs of participants are asked to coordinate the oscillation of their pendulum with the other participant's in an in-phase or antiphase fashion. Two types of pendulums, A and B, having different resonance frequencies (Freq A=0.98 Hz and Freq B=0.64 Hz), were used in different experimental combinations. Results confirm that the preferred frequencies produced by participants while manipulating each pendulum individually were close to the resonance frequencies of the pendulums. In their attempt to synchronize with one another, participants met at common frequencies that were influenced by the mechanical properties of the two pendulums involved. In agreement with previous studies, both the variability of the behavior and the shift in the intended relative phase were found to depend on the task-effector asymmetry, i.e., the difference between the mechanical properties of the effector systems involved. In the second part of the study, we propose a model to account for these results. The model consists of two cross-coupled neuro-mechanical units, each composed of a neural oscillator driving a wrist-pendulum system. Taken individually, each unit reproduced the natural tendency of the participants to freely oscillate a pendulum close to its resonance frequency. When cross-coupled through the vision of the pendulum of the other unit, the two units entrain each other and meet at a common frequency influenced by the mechanical properties of the two pendulums involved. The ability of the proposed model to address the other effects observed as a function of the different conditions of the pendulum and intended mode of coordination is discussed.

In this study we investigate the coordination between rhythmic flexion-extension (FE) and supination-pronation (SP) movements at the elbow joint-complex, while manipulating the intersegmental dynamics by means of a 2-degrees of freedom (df) robot arm. We hypothesized that constraints imposed by the structure of the neuromuscular-skeletal system would (1) result in predominant pattern(s) of coordination in the absence of interaction torques and (2) influence the capabilities of participants to exploit artificially induced interaction torques. Two experiments were conducted in which different conditions of interaction torques were applied on the SP-axis as a function of FE movements. These conditions promoted different patterns of coordination between the 2-df. Control trials conducted in the absence of interaction torques revealed that both the in-phase (supination synchronized with flexion) and the anti-phase (pronation synchronized with flexion) patterns were spontaneously established by participants. The predominance of these patterns of coordination is explained in terms of the mechanical action of bi-articular muscles acting at the elbow joint-complex, and in terms of the reflexes that link the activity of the muscles involved. Results obtained in the different conditions of interaction torques revealed that those neuromuscular-skeletal constraints either impede or favor the exploitation of intersegmental dynamics depending on the context. Interaction torques were indeed found to be exploited to a greater extent in conditions in which the profiles of interaction torques favored one of the two predominant patterns of coordination (i.e., in-phase or anti-phase) as opposed to other patterns of coordination (e.g., 90 degrees or 270 degrees). Those results are discussed in relation to recent studies reporting exploitation of interaction torques in the context of rhythmic movements.

The authors tested for predominant patterns of coordination in the combination of rhythmic flexion-extension (FE) and supination-pronation (SP) at the elbow-joint complex. Participants (N = 10) spontaneously established in-phase (supination synchronized with flexion) and antiphase (pronation synchronized with flexion) patterns. In addition, the authors used a motorized robot arm to generate involuntary SP movements with different phase relations with respect to voluntary FE. The involuntarily induced in-phase pattern was accentuated and was more consistent than other patterns. That result provides evidence that the predominance of the in-phase pattern originates in the influence of neuro-muscular-skeletal constraints rather than in a preference dictated by perceptual-cognitive factors implicated in voluntary control. Neuromuscular-skeletal constraints involved in the predominance of the in-phase and the antiphase patterns are discussed.
