The work reported in this paper proposes a novel synergy between parallel computing and swarm robotics to offer a new computing paradigm, 'swarm-array computing' that can harness and apply autonomic computing for parallel computing systems. One approach among three proposed approaches in swarm-array computing based on landscapes of intelligent cores, in which the cores of a parallel computing system are abstracted to swarm agents, is investigated. A task is executed and transferred seamlessly between cores in the proposed approach thereby achieving self-ware properties that characterize autonomic computing. FPGAs are considered as an experimental platform taking into account its application in space robotics. The feasibility of the proposed approach is validated on the SeSAm multi-agent simulator.

This paper presents a clocking pipeline technique referred to as a single-pulse pipeline (PP-Pipeline) and applies it to the problem of mapping pipelined circuits to a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). A PP-pipeline replicates the operation of asynchronous micropipelined control mechanisms using synchronous-orientated logic resources commonly found in FPGA devices. Consequently, circuits with an asynchronous-like pipeline operation can be efficiently synthesized using a synchronous design methodology. The technique can be extended to include data-completion circuitry to take advantage of variable data-completion processing time in synchronous pipelined designs. It is also shown that the PP-pipeline reduces the clock tree power consumption of pipelined circuits. These potential applications are demonstrated by post-synthesis simulation of FPGA circuits. This paper specifically examines the implantation of a microelectrode array into the median nerve of the left arm of a healthy male volunteer. The objective was to establish a bi-directional link between the human nervous system and a computer, via a unique interface module. This is the first time that such a device has been used with a healthy human. The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy, compatibility, and long term operability of the neural implant in allowing the subject to perceive feedback stimulation and for neural activity to be detected and processed such that the subject could interact with remote technologies. A case study demonstrating real-time control of an instrumented prosthetic hand by means of the bi-directional link is given. The implantation did not result in infection, and scanning electron microscope images of the implant post extraction have not indicated significant rejection of the implant by the body. No perceivable loss of hand sensation or motion control was experienced by the subject while the implant was in place, and further testing of the subject following the removal of the implant has not indicated any measurable long term defects. Asynchronous Optical Sampling has the potential to improve signal to noise ratio in THz transient sperctrometry. The design of an inexpensive control scheme for synchronising two femtosecond pulse frequency comb generators at an offset frequency of 20 kHz is discussed. The suitability of a range of signal processing schemes adopted from the Systems Identification and Control Theory community for further processing recorded THz transients in the time and frequency domain are outlined. Finally, possibilities for femtosecond pulse shaping using genetic algorithms are mentioned.

This paper makes a contribution in bridging the theory and practice of the polyhedral model for designing parallel algorithms. Although the theory of polyhedral model is well developed, designers of massively parallel algorithms are unable to benefit from the theory due to the lack of software tools that incorporate the wide range of transformations that are possible in the model. The Uniformization tool that we developed was the first to integrate a number of techniques and to completely automate the transformation step allowing designers to explore a wide range of feasible designs from high-level specifications.

The general packet radio service (GPRS) has been developed to allow packet data to be transported efficiently over an existing circuit-switched radio network, such as GSM. The main application of GPRS are in transporting Internet protocol (IP) datagrams from web servers (for telemetry or for mobile Internet browsers). Four GPRS baseband coding schemes are defined to offer a trade-off in requested data rates versus propagation channel conditions. However, data rates in the order of > 100 kbits/s are only achievable if the simplest coding scheme is used (CS-4) which offers little error detection and correction (EDC) (requiring excellent SNR) and the receiver hardware is capable of full duplex which is not currently available in the consumer market. A simple EDC scheme to improve the GPRS block error rate (BLER) performance is presented, particularly for CS-4, however gains in other coding schemes are seen. For every GPRS radio block that is corrected by the EDC scheme, the block does not need to be retransmitted releasing bandwidth in the channel and improving the user's application data rate. As GPRS requires intensive processing in the baseband, a viable field programmable gate array (FPGA) solution is presented in this paper.

The work reported in this paper proposes Swarm-Array computing, a novel technique inspired by swarm robotics, and built on the foundations of autonomic and parallel computing. The approach aims to apply autonomic computing constructs to parallel computing systems and in effect achieve the self-ware objectives that describe self-managing systems. The constitution of swarm-array computing comprising four constituents, namely the computing system, the problem/task, the swarm and the landscape is considered. Approaches that bind these constituents together are proposed. Space applications employing FPGAs are identified as a potential area for applying swarm-array computing for building reliable systems. The feasibility of a proposed approach is validated on the SeSAm multi-agent simulator and landscapes are generated using the MATLAB toolkit.
