The generator coordinate method for a reaction coordinate coupled to a harmonic oscillator bath

This paper investigates the usefulness of the generator coordinate method (GCM) for treating the dynamics of a reaction coordinate coupled to a bath of harmonic degrees of freedom. Models for the unimolecular dissociation and isomerization process (proton transfer) are analyzed. The GCM results, presented in analytical form, provide a very good description and are compared to other methods Like the basis set method and multiconfiguration time dependent self-consistent field. Studying nonlinear effects on the early stage of phase ordering using a decomposition method

Nonlinear effects on the early stage of phase ordering are studied using Adomian's decomposition method for the Ginzburg-Landau equation for a nonconserved order parameter. While the long-time regime and the linear behavior at short times of the theory are well understood, the onset of nonlinearities at short times and the breaking of the linear theory at different length scales are less understood. In the Adomians decomposition method, the solution is systematically calculated in the form of a polynomial expansion for the order parameter, with a time dependence given as a series expansion. The method is very accurate for short times, which allows to incorporate the short-time dynamics of the nonlinear terms in a analytical and controllable way. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Growth rates in modern speleothems from Santana Cave, Brazil, by the Pb-210-method

The Santana Cave is located at the Upper Ribeira Touristic State Park (PETAR-Parque Estadual Turistico do Alto Ribeira) in southern São Paulo State, Brazil. This paper describes Pb-210 activity concentration data in soda straw stalactites samples collected at Salao das Flores in Santana Cave that is a fossil tributary of the cave river. Non-expensive alpha counting following some analytical steps for extracting and depositing Pb-210 were used for providing the Pb-210 data. In the analyzed samples, Pb-210 values of increasingly older samples fitted an exponential curve, thus suggesting that the production of Pb-210 has been constant with time. Also, the near-ideal fit indicated that the growth was uniform and there was no break in the continuous growth. The soda straw growth rates were determined from the best fit to the exponential curve through the Pb-210 activity concentration. The results of the measurements allowed estimate a longitudinal rate corresponding to 1.3 mm/yr and a lateral rate of 0.01 mm/yr, which permitted calculate times of 70 years and 317-498 years for their formation, respectively. The lateral growth rate is compatible with values from studies of chemical weathering rates held under laboratory and natural conditions. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Approximations for the generalized temperature integral: a method based on quadrature rules

The generalized temperature integral I(m, x) appears in non-isothermal kinetic analysis when the frequency factor depends on the temperature. A procedure based on Gaussian quadrature to obtain analytical approximations for the integral I(m, x) was proposed. The results showed good agreement between the obtained approximation values and those obtained by numerical integration. Unless other approximations found in literature, the methodology presented in this paper can be easily generalized in order to obtain approximations with the maximum of accurate.

On an approximate analytical solution to a nonlinear vibrating problem, excited by a nonideal motor

This paper analyzes through Multiple Scales Method a response of a simplified nonideal and nonlinear vibrating system. Here, one verifies the interactions between the dynamics of the DC motor (excitation) and the dynamics of the foundation (spring, damper, and mass). We remarked that we consider cubic nonlinearity (spring) and quadratic nonlinearity (DC motor) of the same order of magnitude according to experimental results. Both analytical and numerical results that we have obtained had good agreement.

Analytical procedure for total mercury determination in fishes and shrimps by chronopotentiometric stripping analysis at gold film electrodes after microwave digestion

A method for the total mercury determination in fish and shrimps employing chronopotentiometric stripping analysis on gold film electrodes is described. Fish and shrimp tissues were digested using a microwave oven equipped with closed vessels. We developed a microwave heating program which decomposed all the samples employing diluted nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The proposed method was validated by analyzing a certified reference material and then applied for different fish species from fresh water and seawater acquired in local markets of São Paulo city, Brazil. The Brazilian legislation establishes 0.5 and 1 mg per kilogram of fish as upper limit of mercury for omnivorous and predator species, respectively. Except for blue shark tissues, the mercury content was situated below 0.5 mu g g(-1) for all the analyzed samples. The detection limit of the proposed method was calculated as 5 ng g(-1) of sample utilizing 5 minutes of electrodeposition (+300 mV vs. Ag/AgCl) on the gold electrode. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd.
