Photography has become an integral part of submarine geological and biological investigations of the ocean bottom. The underwater cameras used to make these photographs were designed by Harold Edgerton. The pictures were taken from 1960 to 1962, from ships of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. They show that life occurs even in the deepest trenches, and that sedimentary and biological processes in deep water do not differ in kind from those in shallow water.

Seamounts are very effectively studied by deep-sea photography. Each photograph can be considered as a sample point when used in connection with bathymetric surveys, dredge samples, and cores, thus making it possible to delineate and map geologic and biologic zones on a seamount. Seamounts transcend through a great depth range and are characterized by minimal sedimentation which results in exciting and photogenic differences of environment over a short distance, as typified by our studies of Great Meteor and the New England Seamounts.

The book is a compilation of all available data at the time of publication (1965) on the subject of marine minerals together with the author's original ideas regarding their exploitation. It is one of the most significant publications on ocean resources. It is particularly focused on manganese deposits, their description, sedimentary setting, formation and geochemistry.

Voice disorders (VD) in the elderly can interfere negatively in communication, emotional well-being and quality of life, conditions that correspond to greater exposure to illness and social isolation bringing consequent economic impact for the health system. It is assumed that institutionalized confinement, weakness and morbidity associated to nursing home (NH) contribute to transform VD an especially prevalent condition in institutionalized elderly, including those without cognitive impairment. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated factors of VD in NH elderly residents without cognitive impairment. There is no epidemiological diagnostic instruments of VD for elderly populations, so the first step of this study was dedicated to prepare and analyze the psychometric properties of a short, inexpensive and easy to use questionnaire named Screening for Voice Disorders in Older Adults (Rastreamento de Alterações Vocais em Idosos—RAVI). The methodological procedures of this step followed the guidelines of the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing and contemplated validity evidence based on test content, based on response processes, based on internal structure and based on relations with other variables, as well as reliability analysis and clinical consistency. The result of the validation process showed that the RAVI final score generate valid and reliable interpretations for the epidemiological diagnosis of VD in the elderly, which endorsed the use of the questionnaire in the second stage of the study, performed in ten NH located in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. At this stage, data from socioeconomic and demographic variables, lifestyle, general health conditions and characterization of the institution were collected. It was performed a bivariate analysis and it was calculated the prevalence ratio as a magnitude association measure, with a confidence interval of 95%. The variables with p-value less than 0.20 were included in the multiple logistic regression model that followed the Forward selection method. The odds ratio found in the multivariate model was converted into prevalence ratio and the level of significance was 5%. The sample consisted of 117 subjects with predominance of females and average of 79.68 (± 7.92) years old. The prevalence of VD was 39.3% (95% CI: 30.4-48.1%). The multivariate model showed statistically significant association between VD and depressive symptoms, smoking for a year or more and selfreported hearing loss. In conclusion, VD is a prevalent health condition in NH elderly residents without cognitive impairment and is associated with factors involving psychosocial, lifestyle and communicative disability that require attention of managers and professionals involved with NH environment. Strategies to encourage communication and social integration, actions to combat smoking and minimizing the effects of hearing loss could stimulate the physical well-being, emotional and mental health of institutionalized elderly population, contributing to the vocal and communicative maintenance, a more effective social inclusion and better overall health condition.

The focus of my research is vocal disguise within forensic linguistics. Specifically, I answer the question of what individuals are most likely to do with their voice when they do not want to be recognized by a listener. I also focus on whether specific sociolinguistic characteristics – gender and place of origin – have an effect on the disguise choices that individuals make. My research has found that participants show a preference for altering pitch and/or duration across conditions, as well as taking on a foreign accent. Gender and origin were found to be significant for respect to differences in duration, and significance was also found between origin and pitch. These results suggest that disguise might contain elements of style shifting, and that a speaker's choice is more systematic than random.

The limnic ferromanganese ore concretions in some Finnish lakes are described. Their chemical and mineral compositions have been measured as have their natural surroundings - the latter by means of physico-chemical in-situ analysis. The sources of the nodules' contents are discussed, and a theory based on the calculated precipitation fields of the important ore minerals is presented for the ore formation.

Isotopic-geochemical study revealed presence of mantle He (3He/4He up to 223x10**-8) in gases from mud volcanoes of Eastern Georgia. This fact confirms that the Middle Kura basin fill encloses an intrusive body previously distinguished from geophysical data. Wide variations of carbon isotopic composition d13C in CH4 and CO2 and chemical composition of gas and water at temporally constant 3He/4He ratio indicate their relation with crustal processes. Unusual direct correlations of 3He/4He ratio with concentrations of He and CH4 and 40Ar/36Ar ratio can be explained by generation of gas in the Cenozoic sequence of the Middle Kura basin.

The ability of the hydrated oxides of manganese and iron to adsorb ions from solution (scavenging) is considered in relation to some problems in marine geology, chemistry, and biology. In the ferruginous sediments of the Pacific Ocean, iron oxides are accompanied by titanium, cobalt, and zirconium in amounts proportional to the iron content. Similarly, copper and nickel are linearly related to the manganese content. These observations are explained on the basis of scavenging. An electrochemical theory for the formation of manganese nodules is presented. Marine sediments are classified on the basis of the geosphere in which the solid phases originate. The distribution of certain ionic species in sea water between the solid and aqueous phases is considered on the basis of scavenging and co-ordination compound theory. The concentration of minor elements by members of the marine biosphere is explained either by the direct uptake of the element or by the uptake of iron or manganese oxides with the accompanying scavenged element.

A set of methods has been used for studying composition, structure and distribution of Fe-Mn-micronodules in bottom sediments of the Northeast Pacific. It has been shown that there are two types of Fe-Mn micronodules differing in size, external shape, internal structure and composition of constituent manganese minerals.

The uranium concentrations in marine calcareous material of a biological origin varied between 0.0X and 0.X p.p.m. with the exception of corals which had concentrations of several p.p.m. The aragonitic oolites and aragonite precipitated from sea-water had values similar to those of the corals. A geochronology based on the growth of ionium (thorium-230) from uranium is applicable not only to corals, as previous investigators have pointed out, but also to oolites. Several examples of "oolite ages" are given. The uranium content of ferromanganese minerals from pelagic deposits is of the order of from 4 to 5 p.p.m.

Using spectrochemical techniques Fe, Si, Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, V, Mo, Ti and Tl have been estimated in nineteen manganese nodules, eight from the Atlantic ocean, seven from the Pacific ocean and four from the Indian ocean. Though data on more samples are required before firm and detailed conclusions can be made about the distribution of elements in manganese nodules, several distinct features appear when the data on the nineteen samples are examined. Certain elements appear to enrich more strongly than others. For example, relative to igneous rocks Mo is much more strongly enriched than V. For several elements (Ni, Cu and particularly Co and Tl) the degree of enrichment in two Fe-low nodules is far smaller than in the other nodules. The magnitude of dispersion of concentration appears to vary considerably for different elements; thus, whereas variation of concentration of V is relatively small, that of Ni, Cu, Co and Tl is far larger. The statistical nature of the distribution of Fe in manganese nodules appears to be characteristic and different from that of the other elements studied so far. Of the possible inter-element relationships examined that of Ni-Cu appears to be the most strongly developed.
