En la prehistòria dels hisendats. De senyors útils a propietaris (vegueria de Girona, 1486-1730)

A la vegueria de Girona, entre 1486 i 1730, es produeix el procés de formació històrica d'un grup social que sorgit de la pagesia s'anirà diferenciant progressivament d'aquesta: els senyors útils i propietaris de masos. Aquest grup social basa el seu poder econòmic i polític en l'acumulació de masos: font de rendes i font de l'estatus social assolit dins la parròquia i la universitat on fixa la seva residència. El seu pes social el manifesta a través dels seus espais de sociabilitat (especialment la parròquia, veritable espai de representació), però també manifesta la seva posició de preeminència, fet que pot abocar als conflictes amb el conjunt de la comunitat. Un conflicte que es planteja en termes de diferenciació dels uns i d'igualtat dels altres. És l'enfrontament entre dues visions de la societat: l'individualisme enfront el comunitarisme.

La política sobre la població refugiada durant la Guerra Civil 1936-1939

El desplaçament forçós de les persones no combatents ha estat un tret intrínsec al llarg dels conflictes que han sacsejat la història de la humanitat. La forma més comuna en què s'ha manifestat ha estat la de les deportacions i la de les evacuacions de les zones de guerra. Les primeres ja les podem constatar en nombrosos episodis bíblics o durant la construcció del vell imperi romà. Tanmateix, ha estat a la nostra època quan les deportacions han tingut un abast més dissortat. D'una banda l'anomenada "neteja ètnica" ha implicat, com a primer pas abans de l'extermini d'una comunitat, el seu trasllat a guetos i el posterior desplaçament als camps de concentració. Tals foren els casos de les minories jueva i gitana sota el terror nazi. D'altra banda, hem pogut veure la deportació de col·lectius socials com a càstig per mantenir una determinada actitud davant el poder; el paradigma més tràgic ha estat la dels kulaks de l'antiga Unió Soviètica durant la dictadura estalinista. Finalment, en aquests moments, estem assistint als Balcans a l'enquistament d'un conflicte una de les causes del qual fou la pretensió de crear espais ètnics "purs", per a la qual cosa s'ha obligat la comunitat minoritària a fugir a un altre territori amb la pressió de les armes. La guerra civil de 1936-1939 és el primer conflicte europeu en què apareix la necessitat de traslladar un gran nombre de persones davant del perill que representen els combats. El fet de produir-se en una guerra civil en ple segle XX li dóna una dimensió pròpia, i també que els governs hagin de dissenyar i aplicar unes polítiques d'assistència, de les quals, tal com ja s'ha dit, no existien precedents.

Advanced functionality for radio analysis in the Offline software framework of the Pierre Auger Observatory

The advent of the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) necessitates the development of a powerful framework for the analysis of radio measurements of cosmic ray air showers. As AERA performs ""radio-hybrid"" measurements of air shower radio emission in coincidence with the surface particle detectors and fluorescence telescopes of the Pierre Auger Observatory, the radio analysis functionality had to be incorporated in the existing hybrid analysis solutions for fluorescence and surface detector data. This goal has been achieved in a natural way by extending the existing Auger Offline software framework with radio functionality. In this article, we lay out the design, highlights and features of the radio extension implemented in the Auger Offline framework. Its functionality has achieved a high degree of sophistication and offers advanced features such as vectorial reconstruction of the electric field, advanced signal processing algorithms, a transparent and efficient handling of FFTs, a very detailed simulation of detector effects, and the read-in of multiple data formats including data from various radio simulation codes. Hierarchical Assembly of CaMoO(4) Nano-Octahedrons and Their Photoluminescence Properties

Hierarchical assemblies of CaMoO4 (CM) nano-octahedrons were obtained by microwave-assisted hydrothemial synthesis at 120 degrees C for different times. These structures were structurally, morphologically and optically characterized by X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. First-principle calculations have been carried out to understand the structural and electronic order-disorder effects as a function of the particle/region size. Supercells of different dimensions were constructed to simulate the geometric distortions along both they and z planes of the scheelite structure. Based on these experimental results and with the help of detailed structural simulations, we were able to model the nature of the order-disorder in this important class of materials and discuss the consequent implications on its physical properties, in particular, the photoluminescence properties of CM nanocrystals.

Anisotropy and chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays using arrival directions measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Collaboration has reported. evidence for anisotropy in the distribution of arrival directions of the cosmic rays with energies E > E(th) = 5.5 x 10(19) eV. These show a correlation with the distribution of nearby extragalactic objects, including an apparent excess around the direction of Centaurus A. If the particles responsible for these excesses at E > E(th) are heavy nuclei with charge Z, the proton component of the sources should lead to excesses in the same regions at energies E/Z. We here report the lack of anisotropies in these directions at energies above E(th)/Z (for illustrative values of Z = 6, 13, 26). If the anisotropies above E(th) are due to nuclei with charge Z, and under reasonable assumptions about the acceleration process, these observations imply stringent constraints on the allowed proton fraction at the lower energies.

Search for first harmonic modulation in the right ascension distribution of cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory

We present the results of searches for dipolar-type anisotropies in different energy ranges above 2.5 x 10(17) eV with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, reporting on both the phase and the amplitude measurements of the first harmonic modulation in the right-ascension distribution. Upper limits on the amplitudes are obtained, which provide the most stringent bounds at present, being below 2% at 99% C.L. for EeV energies. The Pierre Auger Observatory scaler mode for the study of solar activity modulation of galactic cosmic rays

Since data-taking began in January 2004, the Pierre Auger Observatory has been recording the count rates of low energy secondary cosmic ray particles for the self-calibration of the ground detectors of its surface detector array. After correcting for atmospheric effects, modulations of galactic cosmic rays due to solar activity and transient events are observed. Temporal variations related with the activity of the heliosphere can be determined with high accuracy due to the high total count rates. In this study, the available data are presented together with an analysis focused on the observation of Forbush decreases, where a strong correlation with neutron monitor data is found.

Update on the correlation of the highest energy cosmic rays with nearby extragalactic matter

Data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory through 31 August 2007 showed evidence for anisotropy in the arrival directions of cosmic rays above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz`min energy threshold, 6 x 10(19) eV. The anisotropy was measured by the fraction of arrival directions that are less than 3.1 degrees from the position of an active galactic nucleus within 75 Mpc (using the Veron-Cetty and Veron 12th catalog). An updated measurement of this fraction is reported here using the arrival directions of cosmic rays recorded above the same energy threshold through 31 December 2009. The number of arrival directions has increased from 27 to 69, allowing a more precise measurement. The correlating fraction is (38(-6)(+7))%, compared with 21% expected for isotropic cosmic rays. This is down from the early estimate of (69-(+11)(13))%. The enlarged set of arrival directions is examined also in relation to other populations of nearby extragalactic objects: galaxies in the 2 Microns All Sky Survey and active galactic nuclei detected in hard X-rays by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope. A celestial region around the position of the radiogalaxy Cen A has the largest excess of arrival directions relative to isotropic expectations. Memória e promoção cultural madeirense na obra do Visconde do Porto da Cruz

A obra de Alfredo de Freitas Branco (Visconde do Porto da Cruz) cruza diferentes fases da sua vida, reflectindo, por isso, vários aspectos relacionados com as suas vivências. Sendo autor de uma vasta obra, fazem parte da sua bibliografia textos de diferentes temáticas e de estilos literários diversos, entre os quais, romances, novelas, contos, teatro, biografias, memórias, política, etnografia e estudos da natureza. Neste estudo, procuramos em linhas gerais, apresentar o seu percurso político e ideológico, no qual se inclui o Integralismo Lusitano, de modo a compreendermos o seu pensamento e compromisso com a sociedade do seu tempo. Fazemos uma breve abordagem à sua criação literária, marcada pela conjuntura histórica da época e destacamos a sua intensa actividade, como jornalista, fundador de revistas e de jornais, conferencista e membro de várias Associações culturais. Analisamos o seu percurso de vida, verificando que sempre se mostrou empenhado em dar a conhecer as suas raízes culturais e interessado em tudo o que representava o progresso do arquipélago, quer propondo ideias inovadoras, quer promovendo a Madeira, no território continental e no estrangeiro. O cerne deste trabalho foi investigar a sua obra, numa vertente cultural, observando o importante contributo no estudo, promoção e preservação da nossa memória cultural de madeirenses, através das recolhas que fez sobre múltiplos aspectos da cultura popular do meio insular, das diversas manifestações culturais do povo, nos seus usos e costumes, das danças, às músicas, ao traje, à alimentação, à medicina popular, às suas crenças e superstições. Observámos ainda os seus estudos do nosso património material, nos seus diversos monumentos; das artes visuais e da promoção dos artistas e intelectuais madeirenses que se evidenciaram na época. Este estudo propõe, também, algumas estratégias para dar a conhecer à comunidade uma parte da obra do Visconde do Porto da Cruz e despertar o interesse no estudo da mesma, a qual permanece ainda na penumbra.

Seabather's eruption: report of five cases in southeast region of Brazil

Os autores relatam cinco acidentes de seabather's eruption ou prurido do traje de banho, uma erupção típica associada na maioria das vezes à água-viva Linuche unguiculata (Cnidaria), que causa um rash pápulo-eritematoso extremamente pruriginoso em áreas cobertas por trajes de banho. O quadro cutâneo é característico e a erupção é comum no Caribe, Flórida, México e estados americanos do Golfo. Os casos são os primeiros relatados no Brasil e larvas de Linuche unguiculata estão presentes nas águas onde ocorreram os acidentes.

Selection for bulb maturity in onion

Embora seja possível produzir cebola (Allium cepa) o ano inteiro no Brasil, a maioria dos cultivares nacionais apresentam bulbos com baixa qualidade, o que proporcionou grande importação de cebola da Argentina, do tipo Valenciana, que não bulbifica no Brasil, mas que agradou os consumidores brasileiros. Para estudar o efeito da seleção para maturidade de bulbos baseada em progênies de meios irmãos obtidas do híbrido triplo intervarietal [Crioula x (Pira Ouro x Valenciana Sintética 14)] foram semeadas 17 progênies selecionadas para maturidade precoce e 25 para tardia, além da geração F1 e dos cultivares Pira Ouro (dias curtos), Crioula (intermediários) e Armada (dias longos), totalizando 46 tratamentos. O delineamento foi em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições de 32 plantas por parcela, cultivadas em bandejas de isopor. As progênies precoces apresentaram ciclo médio variando de 67 a 83 dias e as tardias de 85 a 103 dias. Na comparação da porcentagem de plantas improdutivas esta diferença também foi evidente, variando de 0,0% a 6,2% nas precoces e de 8,1% a 59,5% nas tardias. Os coeficientes de herdabilidades obtidos foram elevados, variando de 0,65 (porcentagem de plantas improdutivas, na seleção tardia) a 0,80 (peso médio de bulbo, na seleção precoce), sendo, em média, superiores na população selecionada para maturidade precoce. Foram obtidas progênies com peso de bulbo superior às testemunhas 'Pira Ouro' e 'Crioula' e com ciclo que não diferia destas. A seleção para maturidade foi altamente eficiente e a população selecionada para maturidade precoce apresenta grande potencial de originar cultivares adaptados, com produção e qualidade de bulbos superiores às disponíveis no mercado brasileiro.

Seabather's eruption: report of fourteen cases

Seabather's eruption is a papulo-pruritic dermatitis caused by the nematocysts of the larvae of the jellyfish Linuche unguiculata retained in the clothing fibers. Previously reported in Brazil, this work describes fourteen cases that occurred in the State of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. The new cases observed over a short period of time (the first half of January, 2012), at the height of the summer season, should alert health teams to possible epidemics on the coast of the state of Santa Catarina.
