Motivation toward financial incentive goals on construction projects

Construction industry observers tout the use of financial incentives as promoters of motivation and commitment on projects. Yet, little empirical evidence exists concerning their effectiveness. What are the drivers of motivation on construction projects? The reasons that construction project participants are motivated to pursue voluntary incentive goals are examined through four Australian case studies. The results demonstrate the critical role played by project relationships and equitable contract conditions in promoting the effectiveness of financial incentives. In the context of a construction project, this study finds financial incentives to be less important to motivation and performance than relationship enhancement initiatives. This finding is unexpected and has implications for the design of project procurement strategies. These results suggest if project clients ignore the importance of relationship quality between participants, the impact of any financial incentive will be compromised.

Markov modelling of the IEEE 802.11 DCF for real-time applications with periodic traffic

Popular wireless network standards, such as IEEE 802.11/15/16, are increasingly adopted in real-time control systems. However, they are not designed for real-time applications. Therefore, the performance of such wireless networks needs to be carefully evaluated before the systems are implemented and deployed. While efforts have been made to model general wireless networks with completely random traffic generation, there is a lack of theoretical investigations into the modelling of wireless networks with periodic real-time traffic. Considering the widely used IEEE 802.11 standard, with the focus on its distributed coordination function (DCF), for soft-real-time control applications, this paper develops an analytical Markov model to quantitatively evaluate the network quality-of-service (QoS) performance in periodic real-time traffic environments. Performance indices to be evaluated include throughput capacity, transmission delay and packet loss ratio, which are crucial for real-time QoS guarantee in real-time control applications. They are derived under the critical real-time traffic condition, which is formally defined in this paper to characterize the marginal satisfaction of real-time performance constraints.

Momentum and seasonality in Chinese stock markets

In this paper, we follow Jegadeesh and Titman's (1993, Journal of Finance) approach to examine 25 momentum/contrarian trading strategies using monthly stock returns in China for the period from 1994 to 2007. Our results suggest that there is no momentum profitability in any of the 25 strategies. In contrast, there is some evidence of reversal effects where the past winners become losers and past losers become winners afterward. The contrarian profit is statistically significant for the strategies using short formation and holding periods, especially for the formation periods of 1 to 3 months and the holding periods of 1 to 3 months. The contrarian strategies can generate about 12% per annum on average. Moreover, we follow Heston and Sadka (2008, Journal of Financial Economics) to investigate where there is any seasonal pattern in the cross-sectional variation of average stock returns in our momentum/contrarian strategies. There is no evidence of any seasonal pattern, and the results are robust to different formation and holding periods.
