Traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources (TKaGRs) is acknowledged as a valuable resource. Its value draws from economic, social, cultural, and innovative uses. This value places TK at the heart of competing interests as between indigenous peoples who hold it and depend on it for their survival, and profitable industries which seek to exploit it in the global market space. The latter group seek, inter alia, to advance and maintain their global competitiveness by exploiting TKaGRs leads in their research and development activities connected with modern innovation. Biopiracy remains an issue of central concern to the developing world and has emerged in this context as a label for the inequity arising from the misappropriation of TKaGRs located in the South by commercial interests usually located in the North. Significant attention and resources are being channeled at global efforts to design and implement effective protection mechanisms for TKaGRs against the incidence of biopiracy. The emergence and recent entry into force of the Nagoya Protocol offers the latest example of a concluded multilateral effort in this regard. The Nagoya Protocol, adopted on the platform of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), establishes an open-ended international access and benefit sharing (ABS) regime which is comprised of the Protocol as well as several complementary instruments. By focusing on the trans-regime nature of biopiracy, this thesis argues that the intellectual property (IP) system forms a central part of the problem of biopiracy, and so too to the very efforts to implement solutions, including through the Nagoya Protocol. The ongoing related work within the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), aimed at developing an international instrument (or a series of instruments) to address the effective protection of TK, constitutes an essential complementary process to the Nagoya Protocol, and, as such, forms a fundamental element within the Nagoya Protocol’s evolving ABS regime-complex. By adopting a third world approach to international law, this thesis draws central significance from its reconceptualization of biopiracy as a trans-regime concept. By construing the instrument(s) being negotiated within WIPO as forming a central component part of the Nagoya Protocol, this dissertation’s analysis highlights the importance of third world efforts to secure an IP-based reinforcement to the Protocol for the effective eradication of biopiracy.

The use of Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) to optimise industrial energy systems is an approach which has the potential to positively impact on manufacturing sector energy efficiency. The need to obtain data to facilitate the implementation of a CPS in an industrial energy system is however a complex task which is often implemented in a non-standardised way. The use of the 5C CPS architecture has the potential to standardise this approach. This paper describes a case study where data from a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system located in a large manufacturing company was fused with grid electricity and gas models as well as a maintenance cost model using the 5C architecture with a view to making effective decisions on its cost efficient operation. A control change implemented based on the cognitive analysis enabled via the 5C architecture implementation has resulted in energy cost savings of over €7400 over a four-month period, with energy cost savings of over €150,000 projected once the 5C architecture is extended into the production environment.

We present the extraction and processing of the IUE Low Dispersion spectra within the framework of the ESA “IUE Newly Extracted Spectra” (INES) System. Weak points of SWET, the optimal extraction implementation to produce the NEWSIPS output products (extracted spectra) are discussed, and the procedures implemented in INES to solve these problems are outlined. The more relevant modifications are: 1) the use of a new noise model, 2) a more accurate representation of the spatial profile of the spectrum and 3) a more reliable determination of the background. The INES extraction also includes a correction for the contamination by solar light in long wavelength spectra. Examples showing the improvements obtained in INES with respect to SWET are described. Finally, the linearity and repeatability characteristics of INES data are evaluated and the validity of the errors provided in the extraction is discussed.

In the last years, digital controllers became a very interesting alternative (low costs and higher accuracy) to the analogue or to hydrodynamic traditional controllers in water supply canal automation, in order to match water supply to water demands. This kind of hydraulic systems needs particular research for control applications because they are big scale systems, open and characterized by big delays and great inertia. This paper presents several digital control modes tested in an experimental canal that will be used as a research platform on the automatic canal control domain. The canal operation and their control modes selection are supervised by a SCADA system developed and configured for this particular canal.

The thesis work deals with topics that led to the development of innovative control-oriented models and control algorithms for modern gasoline engines. Knock in boosted spark ignition engines is the widest topic discussed in this document because it remains one of the most limiting factors for maximizing combustion efficiency in this kind of engine. First chapter is thus focused on knock and a wide literature review is proposed to summarize the preliminary knowledge that even represents the background and the reference for discussed activities. Most relevant results achieved during PhD course in the field of knock modelling and control are then presented, describing every control-oriented model that led to the development of an adaptive model-based combustion control system. The complete controller has been developed in the context of the collaboration with Ferrari GT and it allowed to completely redefine the knock intensity evaluation as well as the combustion phase control. The second chapter is focused on the activity related to a prototyping Port Water Injection system that has been developed and tested on a turbocharged spark ignition engine, within the collaboration with Magneti Marelli. Such system and the effects of injected water on the combustion process were then modeled in a 1-D simulation environment (GT Power). Third chapter shows the development and validation of a control-oriented model for the real-time calculation of exhaust gas temperature that represents another important limitation to the performance increase in modern boosted engines. Indeed, modelling of exhaust gas temperature and thermocouple behavior are themes that play a key role in the optimization of combustion and catalyst efficiency.

According to various studies, the effects of climate change will be a danger to ecosystems and the population, especially in coastal areas, increasing the risk of floods. Authorities are taking action to prevent future disasters using traditional engineering solutions. These solutions can have high environmental and economic costs, fixing the coastline, increasing the salinization of aquifers, and can be subject to failure mechanisms. For this reason, studies were made to use natural engineering solutions for coastal protection, instead of traditional solutions, to achieve the UN SDGs. Coastal ecosystems have the natural ability to repair and restore themselves, increasing soil elevation, and attenuating waves. One of these solutions is the Double Dyke System, consisting of creating a salt marsh between the first dyke and a second inland. The goal is to protect the coasts and to restore ecosystems. The purpose of this study is to compare the costs of natural engineering solutions with traditional ones. It is assumed that these solutions may be more effective and less expensive in the long run. For this evaluation, a suitability analysis of the polders in the Dutch Zeeland region to assess the costs and benefits under different SLR scenarios was made. A saline intrusion model was also created to analyze the effects of a salt marsh on the aquifers. From the analyzes conducted, the implementation of the DDS turns out to be the cheapest coastal defense system in all SLR scenarios. The presence of a salt marsh could also have a positive impact on the prevention of saline intrusion in the various scenarios considered. The DDS could have a positive economic and environmental impact in the long term, reducing the investment costs for coastal defense and bringing important benefits for the protection of man and nature. Despite the results, more studies are needed on the efficiency of this defense system and on the economic evaluation of non-marketable ecosystem services.

This thesis studies the state-of-the-art of phasor measurement units (PMUs) as well as their metrological requirements stated in the IEEE C37.118.1 and C37.118.2 Standards for guaranteeing correct measurement performances. Communication systems among PMUs and their possible applicability in the field of power quality (PQ) assessment are also investigated. This preliminary study is followed by an analysis of the working principle of real-time (RT) simulators and the importance of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) implementation, examining the possible case studies specific for PMUs, including compliance tests which are one of the most important parts. The core of the thesis is focused on the implementation of a PMU model in the IEEE 5-bus network in Simulink and in the validation of the results using OPAL RT-4510 as a real-time simulator. An initial check allows one to get an idea about the goodness of the results in Simulink, comparing the PMU data with respect to the load-flow steady-state information. In this part, accuracy indices are also calculated for both voltage and current synchrophasors. The following part consists in the implementation of the same code in OPAL-RT 4510 simulator, after which an initial analysis is carried out in a qualitative way in order to get a sense of the goodness of the outcomes. Finally, the confirmation of the results is based on an examination of the attained voltage and current synchrophasors and accuracy indices coming from Simulink models and from OPAL system, using a Matlab script. This work also proposes suggestions for an upcoming operation of PMUs in a more complex system as the Digital Twin (DT) in order to improve the performances of the already-existing protection devices of the distribution system operator (DSO) for a future enhancement of power systems reliability.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are proving to have huge potential in road safety, comfort, and efficiency. In recent years, car manufacturers have equipped their high-end vehicles with Level 2 ADAS, which are, according to SAE International, systems that combine both longitudinal and lateral active motion control. These automated driving features, while only available in highway scenarios, appear to be very promising towards the introduction of hands-free driving. However, as they rely only on an on-board sensor suite, their continuative operation may be affected by the current environmental conditions: this prevents certain functionalities such as the automated lane change, other than requiring the driver to keep constantly the hands on the steering wheel. The enabling factor for hands-free highway driving proposed by Mobileye is the integration of high-definition maps, thus leading to the so-called Level 2+. This thesis was carried out during an internship in Maserati's Virtual Engineering team. The activity consisted of the design of an L2+ Highway Assist System following the Rapid Control Prototyping approach, starting from the definition of the requirements up to the real-time implementation and testing on a simulator of the brand new compact SUV Maserati Grecale. The objective was to enhance the current Level 2 highway driving assistance system with hands-free driving capability; for this purpose an Autonomous Lane Change functionality has been designed, proposing a Model Predictive Control-based decision-maker, in charge of assessing both the feasibility and convenience of performing a lane-change maneuver. The result is a Highway Assist System capable of driving the vehicle in a traffic scenario safely and efficiently, never requiring driver intervention.

The thesis is focused on introducing basic MIMO-based and Massive MIMO-based systems and their possible benefits. Then going through the implementation options that we have, according to 3GPP standards, for 5G systems and how the transition is done from a non-standalone 5G RAN to a completely standalone 5G RAN. Having introduced the above-mentioned subjects and providing some definition of telecommunications principles, we move forward to a more technical analysis of the Capacity, Throughput, Power consumption, and Costs. Comparing all the mentioned parameters between a Massive-MIMO-based system and a MIMO-based system. In the analysis of power consumption and costs, we also introduce the concept of virtualization and its benefits in terms of both power and costs. Finally, we try to justify a trade-off between having a more reliable system with a high capacity and throughput while keeping the costs as low as possible.

The thesis explores recent technology developments in the field of structural health monitoring and its application to railway bridge projects. It focuses on two main topics. First, service loads and effect of environmental actions are modelled. In particular, the train moving load and its interaction with rail track is considered with different degrees of detail. Hence, results are compared with real-time experimental measurements. Secondly, the work concerns the identification, definition and modelling process of damages for a prestressed concrete railway bridge, and their implementation inside FEM models. Along with a critical interpretation of the in-field measurements, this approach results in the development of undamaged and damaged databases for the AI-aided detection of anomalies and the definition of threshold levels to prompt automatic alert interventions. In conclusion, an innovative solution for the development of the railway weight-in-motion system is proposed.

Driving simulators emulate a real vehicle drive in a virtual environment. One of the most challenging problems in this field is to create a simulated drive as real as possible to deceive the driver's senses and cause the believing to be in a real vehicle. This thesis first provides an overview of the Stuttgart driving simulator with a description of the overall system, followed by a theoretical presentation of the commonly used motion cueing algorithms. The second and predominant part of the work presents the implementation of the classical and optimal washout algorithms in a Simulink environment. The project aims to create a new optimal washout algorithm and compare the obtained results with the results of the classical washout. The classical washout algorithm, already implemented in the Stuttgart driving simulator, is the most used in the motion control of the simulator. This classical algorithm is based on a sequence of filters in which each parameter has a clear physical meaning and a unique assignment to a single degree of freedom. However, the effects on human perception are not exploited, and each parameter must be tuned online by an engineer in the control room, depending on the driver's feeling. To overcome this problem and also consider the driver's sensations, the optimal washout motion cueing algorithm was implemented. This optimal control-base algorithm treats motion cueing as a tracking problem, forcing the accelerations perceived in the simulator to track the accelerations that would have been perceived in a real vehicle, by minimizing the perception error within the constraints of the motion platform. The last chapter presents a comparison between the two algorithms, based on the driver's feelings after the test drive. Firstly it was implemented an off-line test with a step signal as an input acceleration to verify the behaviour of the simulator. Secondly, the algorithms were executed in the simulator during a test drive on several tracks.

In this thesis, the study and the simulation of two advanced sensorless speed control techniques for a surface PMSM are presented. The aim is to implement a sensorless control algorithm for a submarine auxiliary propulsion system. This experimental activity is the result of a project collaboration with L3Harris Calzoni, a leader company in A&D systems for naval handling in military field. A Simulink model of the whole electric drive has been developed. Due to the satisfactory results of the simulations, the sensorless control system has been implemented in C code for STM32 environment. Finally, several tests on a real brushless machine have been carried out while the motor was connected to a mechanical load to simulate the real scenario of the final application. All the experimental results have been recorded through a graphical interface software developed at Calzoni.

The present work describes the different stages of design, implementation, and validation procedures for an interleaved DC-DC boost converter intended for the 2022 Futura, a fuel cell-powered racing catamaran developed by the UniBoAT team. The main goal of the entire design has been the significant reduction of the weight of the converter by removing heat sinks and reducing component size while increasing its efficiency by adopting high-end power switches and the interleaved architecture operated with a synchronous control strategy. The obtained converter has been integrated into the structure containing the fuel cell stack obtaining a fully integrated system. The realized device has been based on an interleaved architecture with six phases controlled digitally through the average current mode control. The design has been validated through simulations carried out using the software LT-Spice, whereas experimental validations have been performed by means of laboratory bench tests and on-field tests. Detailed thermal and efficiency analyses are provided with the bench tests under the two synchronous and non-synchronous operating modes and with the adoption of the phase shedding technique. The prototype implementation and its performance in real operating conditions are also discussed. Eventually, it is underlined as the designed converter can be used in other applications requiring a voltage-controlled boost converter.
