This paper presents the results of an electrochemical study of the anodic characteristics of arsenopyrite in strongly alkaline solutions and of the cathodic reduction of ferrate( VI) and of dissolved oxygen at an arsenopyrite surface at potentials which are relevant to the oxidation reactions. Cyclic voltammetry at both arsenopyrite disc and arsenopyrite disc/platinum ring electrodes has shown that arsenic(III) is the main product of the anodic process at potentials in the region of the rest potential during oxidation by either ferrate( VI) or oxygen. Evidence for partial passivation of both the anodic and cathodic reactions has been obtained from potentiostatic current - time transients. The initial stage of oxidation by ferrate( VI) has been shown to be mass-transport controlled and this is also true of the oxidation by oxygen in dilute solutions of sodium hydroxide.

In dimethylsulfoxide reductase of Rhodobacter capsulatus tryptophan-116 forms a hydrogen bond with a single oxo ligand bound to the molybdenum ion. Mutation of this residue to phenylalanine affected the UV/visible spectrum of the purified Mo-VI form of dimethylsulfoxide reductase resulting in the loss of the characteristic transition at 720 nm. Results of steady-state kinetic analysis and electrochemical studies suggest that tryptophan 116 plays a critical role in stabilizing the hexacoordinate monooxo Mo-VI form of the enzyme and prevents the formation of a dioxo pentacoordinate Mo-VI species, generated as a consequence of the dissociation of one of the dithiolene ligands of the molybdopterin cofactor from the Mo ion. Cyclic voltammetry of the non-heme diiron enzyme porcine purple acid phosphatase (uteroferrin, Uf) has been reported for the first time. Totally reversible one-electron oxidation responses (Fe-III-Fe-II --> Fe-III-Fe-III) are seen both in the absence and in the presence of weak competitive inhibitors phosphate and arsenate, and dissociation constants of these oxoanion complexes formed with uteroferrin in its oxidized state (Uf(o)) have been determined. The effect of pH on the redox potentials has been investigated in the range 3 < pH < 6.5, enabling acid dissociation constants for Uf(o) and its phosphate and arsenate complexes to be calculated.

Australia is unique in terms of its geography, population distribution, and energy sources. It has an abundance of fossil fuel in the form of coal, natural gas, coal seam methane (CSM), oil, and a variety renewable energy sources that are under development. Unfortunately, most of the natural gas is located so far away from the main centres of population that it is more economic to ship the energy as LNG to neighboring countries. Electricity generation is the largest consumer of energy in Australia and accounts for around 50% of greenhouse gas emissions as 84% of electricity is produced from coal. Unless these emissions are curbed, there is a risk of increasing temperatures throughout the country and associated climatic instability. To address this, research is underway to develop coal gasification and processes for the capture and sequestration Of CO2. Alternative transport fuels such as biodiesel are being introduced to help reduce emissions from vehicles. The future role of hydrogen is being addressed in a national study commissioned this year by the federal government. Work at the University of Queensland is also addressing full-cycle analysis of hydrogen production, transport, storage, and utilization for both stationary and transport applications. There is a modest but growing amount of university research in fuel cells in Australia, and an increasing interest from industry. Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. (CFCL) has a leading position in planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) technology, which is being developed for a variety of applications, and next year Perth in Western Australia is hosting a trial of buses powered by proton-exchange fuel cells. The structural and dynamic properties of dioctadecyldimethylammoniums (DODDMA) intercalated into 2:1 layered clays are investigated using isothermal-isobaric (NPT) molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The simulated results are in reasonably good agreement with the available experimental measurements, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), atom force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. The nitrogen atoms are found to be located mainly within two layers close to the clay surface whereas methylene groups form a pseudoquadrilayer structure. The results of tilt angle and order parameter show that interior two-bond segments of alkyl chains prefer an arrangement parallel to the clay surface, whereas the segments toward end groups adopt a random orientation. In addition, the alkyl chains within the layer structure lie almost parallel to the clay surface whereas those out of the layer structure are essentially perpendicular to the surface. The trans conformations are predominant in all cases although extensive gauche conformations are observed, which is in agreement with previous simulations on n-butane. Moreover, an odd-even effect in conformation distributions is observed mainly along the chains close to the head and tail groups. The diffusion constants of both nitrogen atoms and methylene groups in these nanoconfined alkyl chains increase with the temperature and methelene position toward the tail groups.

The human cytochromes P450 are responsible for the clearance of similar to 90% of xenobiotics yet comparatively little is known about their electrochemistry. Here we report the first direct electrochemistry of P450s from the 2C subfamily; one of the major groups of enzymes from this family. Specifically, the proteins that we have examined are recombinant human P450s 2C9, 2C 18 and 2C 19 and reversible Fe-III/II couples are seen in the absence of dioxygen. Even in the presence of trace amounts of dioxygen, a pronounced cathodic response is seen which is assigned to catalytic reduction of the bound dioxygen ligand by the ferrous P450. In this letter we report the carrier mobilities in an inorganic nanocrystal: conducting polymer composite. The composite material in question (lead sulphide nanocrystals in the conducting polymer poly [2-methoxy-5-(2(')-ethyl-hexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) was made using a single-pot, surfactant-free synthesis. Mobilties were measured using time of flight techniques. We have found that the inclusion of PbS nanocrystals in MEH-PPV both balances and markedly increases the hole and electron mobilities-the hole mobility is increased by a factor of similar to 10(5) and the electron mobility increased by similar to 10(7) under an applied bias of 5 kV cm(-1). These results explain why dramatic improvements in electrical conductivity and photovoltaic performance are seen in devices fabricated from these composites.

A review of thin film drainage models is presented in which the predictions of thinning velocities and drainage times are compared to reported values on foam and emulsion films found in the literature. Free standing films with tangentially immobile interfaces and suppressed electrostatic repulsion are considered, such as those studied in capillary cells. The experimental thinning velocities and drainage times of foams and emulsions are shown to be bounded by predictions from the Reynolds and the theoretical MTsR equations. The semi-empirical MTsR and the surface wave equations were the most consistently accurate with all of the films considered. These results are used in an accompanying paper to develop scaling laws that bound the critical film thickness of foam and emulsion films. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Understanding the interlayer swelling and molecular packing in organoclays is important to the formation and design of polymer nanocomposites. This paper presents recent experimental and molecular simulation studies on a variety of organoclays that show a linear relationship between the increase of d-spacing and the mass ratio between organic and clay. A denser molecular packing is observed in organoclays containing surfactants with hydroxyl-ethyl units. Moreover, our simulation results show that the head (nitrogen) groups are essentially tethered to the clay surface while the long hydrocarbon chains tend to adopt a layering structure with disordered conformation, which contrasts with the previous assumptions of either the chains lying parallel to the clay surface or being tilted at rather precise angles. Ordered nanoporous carbon (ONC) was comprehensively tested for the first time as electrode material in lithium-ion battery. Structure characterization shows the order nanoporous structure and tiny crystallite structure of as-synthesized ONC. The electrochemical properties of this carbon were studied by galvanostatic cycling and cyclic voltammetry. Of special interest is that ONC gave no peak on its positive sweep of the cyclic voltammetry, which was different from other known anode materials. Besides, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and XRD were also used to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of ONC. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
