Life on earth depends on the absorption and conversion of solar energy into chemical bonds, i.e. photosynthesis. In this process, sun light is employed to oxidize water into oxygen and reducing equivalents used to produce fuels. In artificial photosynthesis, the goal is to develop relatively simple systems able to mimic photosynthetic organisms and promote solar-to-chemical conversion. The aim of the present review was to describe recent advances in the application of coordination compounds as catalysts in some key reactions for artificial photosynthesis, such as water splitting and CO2 reduction.

Octocrylene (2-ethylhexyl 2-cyano-3,3-diphenyl-2-propenoate) is present in several sunscreens and is known to work synergistically with UV filters. We prepared eight octocrylene-related compounds to test their photoprotective activities by measuring diffuse transmittance. The compounds had varied photoprotection profiles, with Sun Protection Factors (SPF) ranging from 1 to 5 and UVA Protection Factors (UVAPF) ranging from 1 to 8. Compounds 4, 5, and 7 showed the best protection against UVB sunrays, while compounds 5, 6, and 7 presented the best results for protection from UVA, so compound 7 had the most balanced protection overall. Results for compounds 4, 8, and 9 are reported for the first time in the literature.

For any international companies who wish to enter the Chinese market, quality is base on the fundamental. The companies are coming to realize the importance of quality gradually, thus companies have been put the quality problems on the agenda. The competitiveness of companies comes from quality. Quality is the key to success, and it can decide that the companies can be accepted or eliminated by the market. Due to the obvious benefits, the demand of the method of how to achieve high quality of product keeps growing. During achieving the high quality process, the main troubles come from the impact between Eastern and Western culture. Chinese culture which is different with Western one have lasted as long as five thousand years. Such a culture deeply rooted in the hearts of Chinese people, and effected generation after generation of Chinese people's working style and ways of thinking. This thesis determines how to find a good fit point between Eastern and Western culture. Doing right thing by the right way. The nature of improving quality is improving management level in fact. "How to manage, who should be managed", the thesis explains the basic and best option to achieve those. It describes three-dimension-style management to monitoring the working process. This kind of management style can inspect production process from horizontal and vertical direction. In this management way, it defines effective evaluation system to every subcontractor, and makes the companies to achieve the ultimate goal - satisfy quality. Because of the importance of human factor, the thesis determines the range of training of the inspector and welder due to the current situation of China. The results show that in order to reach reliable training effective evaluation, not only the quality of the human but also the ultimate goal of product quality.

The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the sunhemp (Crotalaria juncea) host species on the protective ability of two mild strains of Passion fruit woodiness virus (PWV), named F-101 and F-144, which had failed to protect passion flowers (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) in previous experiments. The nucleotide sequences of the capsid protein (CP) gene and the 3'-non-translated region (3'-NTR) of these mild strains and the severe strain of PWV-SP were compared to confirm their relationship. The results of two protective tests with sunhemp plants in the greenhouse and one test under field conditions showed that all plants infected with either mild strain were protected against infection and/or symptom expression of the severe strain of PWV-SP. Evaluation of the relative concentration of the mild strains in sun hemp leaves showed an apparent uniformity in virus distribution in the leaf tissues, different than that which was previously reported for these mild strains in passion flower leaves. These results agree with previous studies that showed the effect of the concentration of the protective strains and the host species in the protection process.

This thesis contains dynamical analysis on four different scales: the Solar system, the Sun itself, the Solar neighbourhood, and the central region of the Milky Way galaxy. All of these topics have been handled through methods of potential theory and statistics. The central topic of the thesis is the orbits of stars in the Milky Way. An introduction into the general structure of the Milky Way is presented, with an emphasis on the evolution of the observed value for the scale-length of the Milky Way disc and the observations of two separate bars in the Milky Way. The basics of potential theory are also presented, as well as a developed potential model for the Milky Way. An implementation of the backwards restricted integration method is shown, rounding off the basic principles used in the dynamical studies of this thesis. The thesis looks at the orbit of the Sun, and its impact on the Oort cloud comets (Paper IV), showing that there is a clear link between these two dynamical systems. The statistical atypicalness of the orbit of the Sun is questioned (Paper I), concluding that there is some statistical typicalness to the orbit of the Sun, although it is not very significant. This does depend slightly on whether one includes a bar, or not, as a bar has a clear effect on the dynamical features seen in the Solar neighbourhood (Paper III). This method can be used to find the possible properties of a bar. Finally, we look at the effect of a bar on a statistical system in the Milky Way, seeing that there are not only interesting effects depending on the mass and size of the bar, but also how bars can capture disc stars (Paper II).

The incidence of malignant melanoma of the skin has been steadily rising worldwide during the past decades. Most early detected primary tumors can be removed surgically and the prognosis is good. However, at the same time there still is no permanent cure for metastatic melanoma and its prognosis is poor, although lately new effective drugs have emerged. In this thesis, four different approaches of experimental therapy for metastatic melanoma were studied. Endogenous cis-Urocanic acid (UCA) is found in every individual’s skin, where exposure to UV light from the sun generates it from its inactive trans conformation. Cis- UCA was found to destroy malignant melanoma cells in culture under an acidified pH and sufficient concentration through caspase-3 mediated apoptosis. Furthermore, cis-UCA is able to considerably diminish the growth rate in human melanoma tumors on living SCID mice. Using replication-competent Semliki Forest viruses, human melanoma tumors grown in SCID mice were dramatically shrunken as the fulminant production of viruses in melanoma cells leads them to apoptosis within 72 hours. Small oligopeptides attaching to melanoma cells were identified using in vivo phage display. The melanoma-specific peptides found were further tested in vitro on adenoviruses. Ultimately, the adenoviral retargeting using the peptides was tested in vivo. One peptide homed to human transferring receptor upregulated on melanoma cells. In order to kill the malignant melanoma cells with the retargeted adenoviruses, the viruses should carry genetic material producing apoptotic proteins in the cancer tissue. TIMP-3 has been identified as a good candidate for such a protein, as it inhibits malignant cell adhesion as well as promotes apoptosis through a caspase-8 pathway. It is further shown here that adenovirally delivered TIMP-3 is even more potent, as it could kill non-adherent cancer cells, lacking the fully functional death receptor signalling pathway. Adenovirally delivered TIMP-2 also showed marked antitumor effects in human malignant melanoma xenografts on SCID mice both in ex vivo and systemic delivery.
