To increase the structural efficiency of integrally machined aluminium alloy stiffened panels, it is plausible to introduce plate sub-stiffening to increase the local stability and thus panel static strength performance. Reported herein is the experimental validation of prismatic sub-stiffening, and the computational verification of such concepts within larger recurring structure. The experimental work demonstrates the potential to 'control' plate buckling modes. For the tested sub-stiffening design, an initial plate buckling performance gain of +89% over an equivalent mass design was measured. The numerical simulations, modelling the tested sub-stiffening design, demonstrate equivalent behaviour and performance gains (+66%) within larger structures consisting of recurring panels. Traditional Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) protocol provides deterministic periodic collision free data transmissions. However, TDMA lacks flexibility and exhibits low efficiency in dynamic environments such as wireless LANs. On the other hand contention-based MAC protocols such as the IEEE 802.11 DCF are adaptive to network dynamics but are generally inefficient in heavily loaded or large networks. To take advantage of the both types of protocols, a D-CVDMA protocol is proposed. It is based on the k-round elimination contention (k-EC) scheme, which provides fast contention resolution for Wireless LANs. D-CVDMA uses a contention mechanism to achieve TDMA-like collision-free data transmissions, which does not need to reserve time slots for forthcoming transmissions. These features make the D-CVDMA robust and adaptive to network dynamics such as node leaving and joining, changes in packet size and arrival rate, which in turn make it suitable for the delivery of hybrid traffic including multimedia and data content. Analyses and simulations demonstrate that D-CVDMA outperforms the IEEE 802.11 DCF and k-EC in terms of network throughput, delay, jitter, and fairness.

This study aimed to determine the effect of sub-lethal challenge with Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (PACT) on the susceptibility of clinical Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates to both PACT and a range of antibiotics used in the treatment of infection caused by these bacteria. Clinical S. aureus and P. aeruginosa isolates were exposed to sub-lethal PACT with meso-tetra (N-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphine tetra tosylate (TMP) and methylene blue (MB) over a 72 h period. After exposure, susceptibility of surviving organisms to a range of antibiotics was determined and compared with the susceptibility of an untreated control. Surviving bacteria were also exposed to previously lethal photosensitizer-light combinations, to determine if susceptibility to PACT was affected by sub-lethal exposure. Exposure to sub-lethal PACT did not decrease susceptibility to antibiotics with the minimum inhibitory concentrations for 95% and 100% of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus isolates, respectively, within two doubling dilutions of the MIC of the untreated control. Similarly, habituation with sub-lethal PACT did not reduce susceptibility of P. aeruginosa isolates to PACT levels previously determined as lethal. A reduction in susceptibility to PACT following habituation was apparent for two S. aureus isolates with MB and for 1 S. aureus isolate with IMP. However, for two of these three isolates, the log reduction for habituated cells was still greater than 4 log(10). PACT remains an attractive potential treatment for infection caused by these bacteria. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Previous work has demonstrated the potential to introduce plate element sub-stiffening to increase the local stability and thus static strength performance of integrally machined aluminium alloy stiffened panels. The introduction of plate element prismatic sub-stiffening modifies local plate buckling behaviour and within realistic design constraints, may produce sizable performance gains with equivalent mass designs. This article examines through experimental and computational analysis the potential of non-prismatic sub-stiffening for tailoring local plate stability performance. Using non-prismatic sub-stiffening, the experimental work demonstrates potential initial buckling performance gains with equivalent mass designs (+185%), and computationally, potential mass savings with equivalent static strength performance designs (-9.4%). The use of a water-soluble, thermo-responsive polymer as a highly sensitive fluorescence-lifetime probe of microfluidic temperature is demonstrated. The fluorescence lifetime of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) labelled with a benzofurazan fluorophore is shown to have a steep dependence on temperature around the polymer phase transition and the photophysical origin of this response is established. The use of this unusual fluorescent probe in conjunction with fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) enables the spatial variation of temperature in a microfluidic device to be mapped, on the micron scale, with a resolution of less than 0.1 degrees C. This represents an increase in temperature resolution of an order of magnitude over that achieved previously by FLIM of temperature-sensitive dyes

Experimental results are presented for the focusing capability of an active phase conjugating lens for a single and a dipole source pair and these are compared with predictions. In addition for a single source we illustrate the ability of the lens to project a null at the lens focus instead of a peak. A scheme is also presented such that when a source or pair of sources is imaged through an identical pair of passive scatterers located symmetrically about the lens that imaging with sub-wavelength resolution is possible. The rationale for the operation of the lens and aberrations observed due to its finite array size is discussed and is supported throughout by means of numerical simulation.

A single layer, frequency selective surface based, sub-millimeter wave transmission polarizer is presented that converts incident slant linear 45° polarization into circular polarization upon transmission. The polarization convertor consists of a 30 mm diameter 10 thick silicon reinforced metalized screen containing 2700 resonator cells and perforated with nested split ring slot apertures. The screen was designed and optimized using CST Microwave Studio and predictions were validated experimentally by transmission measurements over the 250-365 GHz frequency range. This frequency range is used for remote environmental monitoring and 325 GHz represents a molecular emission line for H2O. The results obtained show good agreement between measured and modeled predictions. The measured 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth was 11.75%, measured minimum Axial Ratio was 0.19 dB and the measured insertion loss of the single layer screen was 3.38 dB
