Like any new technology, tidal power converters are being assessed for potential environmental impacts. Similar to wind power, where noise emissions have led to some regulations and limitations on consented installation sites, noise emissions of these new tidal devices attract considerable attention, especially due to the possible interaction with the marine fauna. However, the effect of turbine noise cannot be assessed as a stand-alone issue, but must be investigated in the context of the natural background noise in high flow environments. Noise measurements are also believed to be a useful tool for monitoring the operating conditions and health of equipment. While underwater noise measurements are not trivial to perform, this non-intrusive mon- itoring method could prove to be very cost effective. This paper presents sound measurements performed on the SCHOTTEL Instream Turbine as part of the MaRINET testing campaign at the QUB tidal test site in Portaferry during the summer of 2014. This paper demonstrates a comparison of the turbine noise emissions with the normal background noise at the test site and presents possible applications as a monitoring system.

A novel way of cooking rice to maximize the removal of the carcinogen inorganic arsenic (Asi) is presented here. In conventional rice cooking water and grain are in continuous contact, and it is known that the larger the water:rice cooking ratio, the more Asi removed by cooking, suggesting that the Asi in the grain is mobile in water. Experiments were designed where rice is cooked in a continual stream of percolating near boiling water, either low in Asi, or Asi free. This has the advantage of not only exposing grain to large volumes of cooking water, but also physically removes any Asi leached from the grain into the water receiving vessel. The relationship between cooking water volume and Asi removal in conventional rice cooking was demonstrated for the rice types under study. At a water-to-rice cooking ratio of 12:1, 57±5% of Asi could be removed, average of 6 wholegrain and 6 polished rice samples. Two types of percolating technology were tested, one where the cooking water was recycled through condensing boiling water steam and passing the freshly distilled hot water through the grain in a laboratory setting, and one where tap water was used to cook the rice held in an off-the-shelf coffee percolator in a domestic setting. Both approaches proved highly effective in removing Asi from the cooking rice, with up to 85% of Asi removed from individual rice types. For the recycled water experiment 59±8% and 69±10% of Asi was removed, on average, compared to uncooked rice for polished (n=27) and wholegrain (n=13) rice, respectively. For coffee percolation there was no difference between wholegrain and polished rice, and the effectiveness of Asi removal was 49±7% across 6 wholegrain and 6 polished rice samples. The manuscript explores the potential applications and further optimization of this percolating cooking water, high Asi removal, discovery.

Abstract. Single-zone modelling is used to assess different collections of impeller 1D loss models. Three collections of loss models have been identified in literature, and the background to each of these collections is discussed. Each collection is evaluated using three modern automotive turbocharger style centrifugal compressors; comparisons of performance for each of the collections are made. An empirical data set taken from standard hot gas stand tests for each turbocharger is used as a baseline for comparison. Compressor range is predicted in this study; impeller diffusion ratio is shown to be a useful method of predicting compressor surge in 1D, and choke is predicted using basic compressible flow theory. The compressor designer can use this as a guide to identify the most compatible collection of losses for turbocharger compressor design applications. The analysis indicates the most appropriate collection for the design of automotive turbocharger centrifugal compressors.

Mixed flow turbines represent a potential solution to the increasing requirement for high pressure, low velocity ratio operation in turbocharger applications. While literature exists for the use of these turbines at such operating conditions, there is a lack of detailed design guidance for defining the basic geometry of the turbine, in particular, the cone angle – the angle at which the inlet of the mixed flow turbine is inclined to the axis. This investigates the effect and interaction of such mixed flow turbine design parameters.
Computational Fluids Dynamics was initially used to investigate the performance of a modern radial turbine to create a baseline for subsequent mixed flow designs. Existing experimental data was used to validate this model.
Using the CFD model, a number of mixed flow turbine designs were investigated. These included studies varying the cone angle and the associated inlet blade angle.
The results of this analysis provide insight into the performance of a mixed flow turbine with respect to cone and inlet blade angle.

Off-design performance now plays a vital role in the design decisions made for automotive turbocharger turbines. Of particular interest is extracting more energy at high pressure ratios and lower rotational speeds. In this region of operation the U/C value will be low and the rotor will experience high values of positive incidence at the inlet. The positive incidence causes flow to separate on the suction surface and produces high blade loading at inlet, which drives tip leakage. A CFD analysis has been carried out on a number of automotive turbines utilizing non-radial fibred blading. To help improve secondary flows yet meet stress requirements a number of designs have been investigated. The inlet blade angle has been modified in a number of ways. Firstly, the blading has been adjusted as to provide a constant back swept angle in the span wise direction. Using the results of the constant back swept blading studies, the back swept blade angle was then varied in the span wise direction. In addition to this, in an attempt to avoid an increase in stress, the effect of varying the leading edge profile of the blade was investigated. It has been seen that off-design performance is improved by implementing back swept blading at the inlet. Varying the inlet angle in the span wise direction provided more freedom for meeting stress requirements and reduces the negative impact on blade performance at the design point. The blade leading edge profile was seen to offer small improvements during off-design operation with minimal effects on stress within the rotor. However, due to the more pointed nature of the leading edge, the rotor was less tolerant to flow misalignment at the design point.

Turbogenerating is a form of turbocompounding whereby a Turbogenerator is placed in the exhaust stream of an internal combustion engine. The Turbogenerator converts a portion of the expelled energy in the exhaust gas into electricity which can then be used to supplement the crankshaft power. Previous investigations have shown how the addition of a Turbogenerator can increase the system efficiency by up to 9%. However, these investigations pertain to the engine system operating at one fixed engine speed. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the system and in particular the Turbogenerator operate during engine speed transients. On turbocharged engines, turbocharger lag is an issue. With the addition of a Turbogenerator, these issues can be somewhat alleviated. This is done by altering the speed at which the Turbogenerator operates during the engine’s speed transient. During the transients, the Turbogenerator can be thought to act in a similar manner to a variable geometry turbine where its speed can cause a change in the turbocharger turbine’s pressure ratio. This paper shows that by adding a Turbogenerator to a turbocharged engine the transient performance can be enhanced. This enhancement is shown by comparing the turbogenerated engine to a similar turbocharged engine. When comparing the two engines, it can be seen that the addition of a Turbogenerator can reduce the time taken to reach full power by up to 7% whilst at the same time, improve overall efficiency by 7.1% during the engine speed transient.

Conventionally, radial turbines have almost exclusively used radially fibred blades. While issues of mechanical integrity are paramount, there may be opportunities for improving turbine efficiency through a 3D blade design without exceeding mechanical limits. Off-design performance and understanding of the secondary flow structures now plays a vital role in the design decisions made for automotive turbocharger turbines. Of particular interest is extracting more energy at high pressure ratios and lower rotational speeds. Operating in this region means the rotor will experience high values of positive incidence at the inlet. A CFD analysis has been carried out on a scaled automotive turbine utilizing a swing vane stator system. To date no open literature exists on the flow structures present in a standard VGT system. Investigations were carried out on a 90 mm diameter rotor with the stator vane at the maximum, minimum and 25% mass flow rate positions. In addition stator vane endwall clearance existed at the hub side. From investigation of the internal flow fields of the baseline rotor, a number of areas that could be optimized in the future with three dimensional blading were identified. The blade loading and tip leakage flow near inlet play a significant role in the flow development further downstream at all stator vane positions. It was found that tip leakage flow and flow separation at off-design conditions could be reduced by employing back swept blading and redistributing the blade loading. This could potentially reduce the extent of the secondary flow structures found in the present study.

This paper deals with identification of dynamics in suction control of airfoils for low Reynolds number regimes (8 x 10^4 - 5 x 10^5). In particular, the dynamics of interest is the map that relates suction pressure and surface pressure. Identification of such dynamics is of use to a variety of active control applications including suction control in small/medium wind turbines which operate in these Reynolds number regimes. Prior research has largely focused on higher Reynolds number regimes, creating a need for such a study. Towards identifying the said dynamic relations, experiments were conducted on NACA0012 airfoil in a wind tunnel. The dynamic relation between suction and surface pressure was identified as an overdamped second order system.

This paper proposes a series of variations in designing the location of a wind farm on Monti della Tolfa. These project solutions aim at mitigating the visual impact caused by the wind aerogenerators. Besides the usual location of the wind aerogenerators on the skyline, these alternatives within the project design relate to the placement of wind turbines in the middle and at the bottom of the hillside. Other possible mitigation forms relate to the dimensions and the colour of the wind towers. This study proposes both a non-monetary and monetary analysis of the visual impact related to each project proposal. The final aim of the paper is to analyze economic and financial costs-benefits for each alternative to find out the economic optimal solution.

This article details how the primary studies are specified to establish the flow of energy power generation and principally the turbines design flow, starting from the analysis of how determine the flow of a basin and also the methods to define the runoff flow which generates the rainfalls in the basins, analyzing the kind of grounds. When the flow of the river (basin) and design flow are specified, the type of turbine to be used is determined and also define the best efficiency possible, taking into consideration the geography of the zone of the hydroelectric, the abacus help to choose the turbine in agreed to parameters like electricity potency, voltage drops and voltage. By using the above software previously, for the design house Sarapullo and Alluriquín Hydroelectric Project Toachi machines - Pilatón, it was determined that each generating station will have three turbines type Francis of vertical axis with their complementary systems for its operation which are designed to generate 254.4 megawatts (MW) using a flow of 33.33 m3/s. Dado o aumento acelerado dos preços dos combustíveis fósseis e as incertezas quanto à sua disponibilidade futura, tem surgido um novo interesse nas tecnologias da biomassa aplicadas à produção de calor, eletricidade ou combustíveis sintéticos. Não obstante, para a conversão termoquímica de uma partícula de biomassa sólida concorrem fenómenos bastante complexos que levam, em primeiro lugar, à secagem do combustível, depois à pirólise e finalmente à combustão ou gasificação propriamente ditas. Uma descrição relativamente incompleta de alguns desses estágios de conversão constitui ainda um obstáculo ao desenvolvimento das tecnologias que importa ultrapassar. Em particular, a presença de elevados conteúdos de matéria volátil na biomassa põe em evidência o interesse prático do estudo da pirólise. A importância da pirólise durante a combustão de biomassa foi evidenciada neste trabalho através de ensaios realizados num reator piloto de leito fluidizado borbulhante. Verificou-se que o processo ocorre em grande parte à superfície do leito com chamas de difusão devido à libertação de voláteis, o que dificulta o controlo da temperatura do reator acima do leito. No caso da gasificação de biomassa a pirólise pode inclusivamente determinar a eficiência química do processo. Isso foi mostrado neste trabalho durante ensaios de gasificação num reator de leito fluidizado de 2MWth, onde um novo método de medição permitiu fechar o balanço de massa ao gasificador e monitorizar o grau de conversão da biomassa. A partir destes resultados tornou-se clara a necessidade de descrever adequadamente a pirólise de biomassa com vista ao projeto e controlo dos processos. Em aplicações de engenharia há particular interesse na estequiometria e propriedades dos principais produtos pirolíticos. Neste trabalho procurou-se responder a esta necessidade, inicialmente através da estruturação de dados bibliográficos sobre rendimentos de carbonizado, líquidos pirolíticos e gases, assim como composições elementares e poderes caloríficos. O resultado traduziu-se num conjunto de parâmetros empíricos de interesse prático que permitiram elucidar o comportamento geral da pirólise de biomassa numa gama ampla de condições operatórias. Para além disso, propôs-se um modelo empírico para a composição dos voláteis que pode ser integrado em modelos compreensivos de reatores desde que os parâmetros usados sejam adequados ao combustível ensaiado. Esta abordagem despoletou um conjunto de ensaios de pirólise com várias biomassas, lenhina e celulose, e temperaturas entre os 600 e 975ºC. Elevadas taxas de aquecimento do combustível foram alcançadas em reatores laboratoriais de leito fluidizado borbulhante e leito fixo, ao passo que um sistema termo-gravimétrico permitiu estudar o efeito de taxas de aquecimento mais baixas. Os resultados mostram que, em condições típicas de processos de combustão e gasificação, a quantidade de voláteis libertada da biomassa é pouco influenciada pela temperatura do reator mas varia bastante entre combustíveis. Uma análise mais aprofundada deste assunto permitiu mostrar que o rendimento de carbonizado está intimamente relacionado com o rácio O/C do combustível original, sendo proposto um modelo simples para descrever esta relação. Embora a quantidade total de voláteis libertada seja estabelecida pela composição da biomassa, a respetiva composição química depende bastante da temperatura do reator. Rendimentos de espécies condensáveis (água e espécies orgânicas), CO2 e hidrocarbonetos leves descrevem um máximo relativamente à temperatura para dar lugar a CO e H2 às temperaturas mais altas. Não obstante, em certas gamas de temperatura, os rendimentos de algumas das principais espécies gasosas (e.g. CO, H2, CH4) estão bem correlacionados entre si, o que permitiu desenvolver modelos empíricos que minimizam o efeito das condições operatórias e, ao mesmo tempo, realçam o efeito do combustível na composição do gás. Em suma, os ensaios de pirólise realizados neste trabalho permitiram constatar que a estequiometria da pirólise de biomassa se relaciona de várias formas com a composição elementar do combustível original o que levanta várias possibilidades para a avaliação e projeto de processos de combustão e gasificação de biomassa.

Le développement des hydroliennes se base souvent sur des conditions d'écoulement idéalisées qui ne reflètent pas entièrement le courant présent sur un site réel. Dans cette optique, ce mémoire investigue l'effet d'un écoulement non aligné ou cisaillé sur les performances et le chargement de deux types d'hydrolienne : les hydroliennes à rotor axial (HRA) et à aile oscillante (HAO). Cette étude est réalisée à l'aide de simulations numériques et les résultats démontrent que pour les deux types d'hydrolienne, le désalignement produit une réduction de la puissance et de la traînée, tandis que le cisaillement n'a qu'un effet de second ordre sur ces derniers. Le chargement additionnel sur la structure de support causé par des conditions d'écoulement non idéal est aussi similaire pour les deux technologies. Le désalignement et le cisaillement affectent cependant plus significativement le chargement en fatigue des pales de l'HRA que celui de l'aile de l'HAO.

Ce mémoire présente l’étude numérique d’un emballement de turbine hydraulique axiale à échelle modèle. Cet état transitoire est simulé du point de meilleur rendement jusqu’à l’atteinte de 95% de la vitesse d’emballement. Pour ce faire, une méthodologie numérique est développée à l’aide du logiciel commercial ANSYS CFX en utilisant une approche "Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes" avec modèle de turbulence k-ε. Cette méthodologie numérique a été validée grâce à des mesures expérimentales de pression acquises en situation d’emballement sur les aubes d’une roue de turbine axiale étudiée au Laboratoire de Machines Hydrauliques de l’Université Laval. La validation des simulations numériques a été réalisée grâce à des comparaisons dans les domaines temporel et fréquentiel entre les pressions mesurées expérimentalement et calculées numériquement. Les analyses fréquentielles en transitoire ont été effectuées à l’aide de transformées en ondelettes afin de représenter l’évolution temporelle du spectre de fréquence. Des analyses qualitatives de phénomènes hydrauliques prenant place dans la turbine sont aussi présentées. Les analyses effectuées ont permis de confirmer le développement d’un tourbillon en précession par rapport à la roue dans l’aspirateur provocant les fluctuations de pression dominantes à des fréquences subsynchrones. La comparaison entre les données expérimentales et numériques a permis de valider une stratégie de simulation transitoire et d’en définir les limites en vue de prochaines simulations d’emballement. Des tests supplémentaires sont suggérés pour améliorer la précision ou le niveau de confiance de la méthode.
