At least 6% of primary school aged children present with DCD, where co-ordination is substantially below the normal range for the child’s age and intelligence. Motor skill difficulties negatively affect academic achievement, recreation and activities of daily living. Poor upper-limb co-ordination is a common difficulty for children with DCD. A possible cause of this problem is deviant muscle timing in proximal muscle groups, which results in poor postural and movement control. While studies have been published investigating postural control in response to external perturbations, detail about postural muscle activity during voluntary movement is limited even in children with normal motor development. No studies have investigated the relationship between muscle timing, resultant arm motion and upper-limb coordination deficits. Objectives: To investigate the relationship between functional difficulties with upper-limb motor skills and neuromuscular components of postural stability and coordination. Specifically, to investigate onset-timing of muscle activity, timing of arm movement, and resultant three-dimensional (3D) arm co-ordination during rapid, voluntary arm movement and to analyse differences arising due to the presence of DCD. This study is part of a larger research program investigating postural stability and control of upper limb movement in children. Design: A controlled, cross-sectional study of differences between children with and without DCD. Methods: This study included 50 children aged eight to 10 years (25 with DCD and 25 without DCD). Children participated in assessment of motor skills according to the Movement ABC Test and a laboratory study of rapid, voluntary arm movements. Parameters investigated included muscle activation timing of shoulder and trunk muscles (surface electromyography), arm movement timing (light sensor) and resultant 3D arm motion (Fastrak). Results: A MANOVA is being used to analyse between-group differences. Preliminary results indicate children with DCD demonstrate altered muscle timing during a rapid arm raise when compared with the control group of children. Conclusion: Differences in proximal muscle timing in children with DCD support the hypothesis that altered proximal muscle activity may contribute to poor proximal stability and consequently poor arm movement control. This has implications for clinical physiotherapy.

Semi-aquatic animals represent a transitional locomotor condition characterised by the possession of morphological features that allow locomotion both in water and on land. Most ecologically important behaviours of crocodilians occur in the water, raising the question of whether their 'terrestrial construction' constrains aquatic locomotion. Moreover, the demands for aquatic locomotion change with life-history stage. It was the aim of this research to determine the kinematic characteristics and efficiency of aquatic locomotion in different-sized crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus). Aquatic propulsion was achieved primarily by tail undulations, and the use of limbs during swimming was observed only in very small animals or at low swimming velocities in larger animals. Over the range of swimming speeds we examined, tail beat amplitude did not change with increasing velocity, but amplitude increased significantly with body length. However, amplitude expressed relative to body length decreased with increasing body length. Tail beat frequency increased with swimming velocity but there were no differences in frequency between different-sized animals. Mechanical power generated during swimming and thrust increased non-linearly with swimming velocity, but disproportionally so that kinematic efficiency decreased with increasing swimming velocity. The importance of unsteady forces, expressed as the reduced frequency, increased with increasing swimming velocity. Amplitude is the main determinant of body-size-related increases in swimming velocity but, compared with aquatic mammals and fish, crocodiles are slow swimmers probably because of constraints imposed by muscle performance and unsteady forces opposing forward movement. Nonetheless, the kinematic efficiency of aquatic locomotion in crocodiles is comparable to that of fully aquatic mammals, and it is considerably greater than that of semi-aquatic mammals.

Objective: To compare head relocation accuracy in traumatic ( whiplash), insidious onset neck pain patients and asymptomatic subjects when targeting a natural head posture (NHP) and complex predetermined positions. Design: A case-control study. Setting: University-based musculoskeletal research clinic. Participants: Sixty-three volunteers divided into three groups of similar gender and age: Group 1 (n=21) an asymptomatic group; group 2 (n=20) insidious onset neck pain; group 3 (n=22) a history of whiplash injury. Intervention: Five randomly ordered tests designed to detect relocation accuracy of the head. Outcome measures: A 3-Space Fastrak system measured the mean absolute relocation error of three trials of each relocation test. Results: A significant difference was found between groups in one of the tests targeting the NHP (p=0.001). Post-hoc pairwise comparisons revealed a significant difference (pless than or equal to0.05) between the asymptomatic group and each symptomatic group. The difference between the symptomatic groups just failed to reach significance (p=0.07). None of the other four tests revealed significant differences. Conclusion: The test of targeting the NHP indicates that relocation inaccuracy exists in patients with neck pain with a trend to suggest that the deficit may be greater in whiplash patients. Tests employing unfamiliar postures or more complex movement were not successful in differentiating subject groups.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of increasing age on four shoulder movements and to explore the need for normative data for shoulder range of motion (ROM) in people aged 50 years and older. Forty-one participants were conveniently recruited according to four age categories: 50-59 years, 60-69 years, 70-79 years and 80 years and over. Goniometric measurement of bilateral active and passive ROM for flexion, abduction, internal rotation and external rotation was analysed using paired sample t-tests and compared with the norms of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) using one sample t-tests. We investigated how the relative direction of limb movements in external space (iso- and non-isodirectionality), muscular constraints (the relative timing of homologous muscle activation) and the egocentric frame of reference (moving simultaneously toward/away the longitudinal axis of the body) contribute to the stability of coordinated movements. In the first experiment, we attempted to determine the respective stability of isodirectional and non-isodirectional movements in between-persons coordination. In a second experiment, we determined the effect of the relative direction in external space, and of muscular constraints, on pattern stability during a within-person bimanual coordination task. In the third experiment we dissociated the effects on pattern stability of the muscular constraints, relative direction and egocentric frame of reference. The results showed that (1) simultaneous activation of homologous muscles resulted in more stable performance than simultaneous activation of non-homologous muscles during within-subject coordination, and that (2) isodirectional movements were more stable than non-isodirectional movements during between-persons coordination, confirming the role of the relative direction of the moving limbs in the stability of bimanual coordination. Moreover, the egocentric constraint was to some extent found distinguishable from the effect of the relative direction of the moving limbs in external space, and from the effect of the relative timing of muscle activation. In summary, the present study showed that relative direction of the moving limbs in external space and muscular constraints may interact either to stabilize or destabilize coordination patterns. The authors investigated how the intention to passively perform a behavior and the intention to persist with a behavior impact upon the spatial and temporal properties of bimanual coordination. Participants (N = 30) were asked to perform a bimanual coordination task that demanded the continuous rhythmic extension-flexion of the wrists. The frequency of movement was scaled by an auditory metronome beat from 1.5 Hz, increasing to 3.25 Hz in .25-Hz increments. The task was further defined by the requirement that the movements be performed initially in a prescribed pattern of coordination (in-phase or antiphase) while the participants assumed one of two different intentional states: stay with the prescribed pattern should it become unstable or do not intervene should the pattern begin to change. Transitions away from the initially prescribed pattern were observed only in trials conducted in the antiphase mode of coordination. The time at which the antiphase pattern of coordination became unstable was not found to be influenced by the intentional state. In addition, the do-not-intervene set led to a switch to an in-phase pattern of coordination whereas the stay set led to phase wandering. Those findings are discussed within the framework of a dynamic account of bimanual coordination.

Time motion analysis is extensively used to assess the demands of team sports. At present there is only limited information on the reliability of measurements using this analysis tool. The aim of this study was to establish the reliability of an individual observer's time motion analysis of rugby union. Ten elite level rugby players were individually tracked in Southern Hemisphere Super 12 matches using a digital video camera. The video footage was subsequently analysed by a single researcher on two occasions one month apart. The test-retest reliability was quantified as the typical error of measurement (TEM) and rated as either good (10% TEM). The total time spent in the individual movements of walking, jogging, striding, sprinting, static exertion and being stationary had moderate to poor reliability (5.8-11.1% TEM). The frequency of individual movements had good to poor reliability (4.3-13.6% TEM), while the mean duration of individual movements had moderate reliability (7.1-9.3% TEM). For the individual observer in the present investigation, time motion analysis was shown to be moderately reliable as an evaluation tool for examining the movement patterns of players in competitive rugby. These reliability values should be considered when assessing the movement patterns of rugby players within competition.

Primary objective : To investigate the speed and accuracy of tongue movements exhibited by a sample of children with dysarthria following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) during speech using electromagnetic articulography (EMA). Methods and procedures : Four children, aged between 12.75-17.17 years with dysarthria following TBI, were assessed using the AG-100 electromagnetic articulography system (Carstens Medizinelektronik). The movement trajectories of receiver coils affixed to each child's tongue were examined during consonant productions, together with a range of quantitative kinematic parameters. The children's results were individually compared against the mean values obtained by a group of eight control children (mean age of 14.67 years, SD 1.60). Main outcomes and results : All four TBI children were perceived to exhibit reduced rates of speech and increased word durations. Objective EMA analysis revealed that two of the TBI children exhibited significantly longer consonant durations compared to the control group, resulting from different underlying mechanisms relating to speed generation capabilities and distances travelled. The other two TBI children did not exhibit increased initial consonant movement durations, suggesting that the vowels and/or final consonants may have been contributing to the increased word durations. Conclusions and clinical implications : The finding of different underlying articulatory kinematic profiles has important implications for the treatment of speech rate disturbances in children with dysarthria following TBI.

When asked to compare two lateralized shapes for horizontal size, neglect patients often indicate the left stimulus to be smaller. Gainotti and Tiacci (1971) hypothesized that this phenomenon might be related to a rightward bias in the patients' gaze. This study aimed to assess the relation between this size underestimation and oculomotor asymmetries. Eye movements were recorded while three neglect patients judged the horizontal extent of two rectangles. Two experimental manipulations were performed to increase the likelihood of symmetrical scanning of the stimulus display. The first manipulation entailed a sequential, rather than simultaneous presentation of the two rectangles. The second required adaptation to rightward displacing prisms, which is known to reduce many manifestations of neglect. All patients consistently underestimated the left rectangle, but the pattern of verbal responses and eye movements suggested different underlying causes. These include a distortion of space perception without ocular asymmetry, a failure to view the full leftward extent of the left stimulus, and a high-level response bias. Sequential presentation of the rectangles and prism adaptation reduced ocular asymmetries without affecting size underestimation. Overall, the results suggest that leftward size underestimation in neglect can arise for a number of different reasons. Incomplete leftward scanning may perhaps be sufficient to induce perceptual size distortion, but it is not a necessary prerequisite.

Histidines 107 and 109 in the glycine receptor ( GlyR) alpha(1) subunit have previously been identified as determinants of the inhibitory zinc-binding site. Based on modeling of the GlyR alpha(1) subunit extracellular domain by homology to the acetylcholine-binding protein crystal structure, we hypothesized that inhibitory zinc is bound within the vestibule lumen at subunit interfaces, where it is ligated by His(107) from one subunit and His(109) from an adjacent subunit. This was tested by co-expressing alpha(1) subunits containing the H107A mutation with alpha(1) subunits containing the H109A mutation. Although sensitivity to zinc inhibition is markedly reduced when either mutation is individually incorporated into all five subunits, the GlyRs formed by the co-expression of H107A mutant subunits with H109A mutant subunits exhibited an inhibitory zinc sensitivity similar to that of the wild type alpha(1) homomeric GlyR. This constitutes strong evidence that inhibitory zinc is coordinated at the interface between adjacent alpha(1) subunits. No evidence was found for beta subunit involvement in the coordination of inhibitory zinc, indicating that a maximum of two zinc-binding sites per alpha(1)beta receptor is sufficient for maximal zinc inhibition. Our data also show that two zinc-binding sites are sufficient for significant inhibition of alpha(1) homomers. The binding of zinc at the interface between adjacent alpha(1) subunits could restrict intersubunit movements, providing a feasible mechanism for the inhibition of channel activation by zinc.

Three different particular geometrical shapes of parallelepiped, cylinder and sphere were taken from cut green beans (length:diameter = 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1) and potatoes (aspect ratio = 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1) and peas, respectively. Their drying behaviour in a fluidised bed was studied at three different drying temperatures of 30, 40 and 50 degreesC (RH = 15%). Drying curves were constructed using non-dimensional moisture ratio (MR) and time and their behaviour was modelled using exponential (MR = exp(-kt)) and Page (MR = exp(-kt(n))) models. The effective diffusion coefficient of moisture transfer was determined by Fickian method using uni- and three-dimensional moisture movements. The diffusion coefficient was least affected by the size when the moisture movement was considered three-dimensional, whereas the drying temperature had a significative effect on diffusivity as expected. The drying constant and diffusivity coefficients were on the descending order for potato, beans and peas. The Arrhenius activation energy for the peas was also highest, indicating a strong barrier to moisture movement in peas as compared to beans and skinless cut potato pieces. Este estudo buscou cartografar as estratégias de resistência construídas por professores de uma escola pública municipal de ensino infantil da cidade de Vitória, considerando a dinamicidade da produção de saúde e doença. A cartografia se efetivou por meio de vivência institucional, entrevistas, construção de um diário de campo, questionários, fotografias e confrontação-validação dos resultados com o coletivo de trabalhadores. Apesar de todas as nocividades do ambiente de trabalho, os professores não se deixam paralisar e criam estratégias, novas formas de fazer seu trabalho, buscando condições menos adoecedoras para o desenvolvimento de suas atividades que, quando coletivizadas, potencializam o processo inventivo desses trabalhadores. Os resultados da pesquisa indicam a importância dessas discussões, uma vez que dão visibilidade a essas formas de luta, o que pode promover transformação do que é vivido nas escolas hoje.

A pesquisa analisa da constituição histórica da disciplina História da Educação ministrada na Faculdade de Filosofia Ciências e Letras do Estado do Espírito Santo, posteriormente incorporada a Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo entre os anos de 1951 e 2000. Investiga a constituição histórica da disciplina, as transformações programáticas, legais e institucionais referentes à disciplina de História da Educação, como também as abordagens historiográficas, periodizações e os conceitos de tempo, história e educação. A fundamentação teórica e metodológica articula-se dialogicamente a partir das construções conceituais e metodológicas de Carlo Ginzburg e Mikhail Bakhtin. A partir dos conceitos de polifonia e dialogismo, comum a ambos, investigou-se as vozes e diálogos impressos nas narrativas da disciplina de História da Educação e seu ensino, sejam em camadas mais superficiais ou profundas, encontradas no corpus documental consultado e analisado, que correspondem a: programas de ensino, transparências, leis, estruturas curriculares, documentos de departamento; resenhas e fichamentos de textos, bibliografia obrigatória e complementar, avaliações e entrevistas. Procurou-se no corpus documental dados aparentemente negligenciáveis – pistas, indícios e sinais – remontar uma realidade histórica complexa e não experimentável diretamente. Ao investigar historicamente a trajetória da disciplina História da Educação e seu ensino a partir dos parâmetros legais, programáticos e institucionais, foi possível perceber que as mudanças mais profundas operadas na disciplina não se originam das legislações e reestruturações curriculares, mas dos locais de produção e socialização do conhecimento histórico. Durante o período analisado, as duas esferas de produção historiográficas que mais influenciaram nas abordagens, periodizações e conceitos de tempo, história e educação da disciplina História da Educação do curso de pedagogia pesquisado foram: a editora responsável pela publicação e divulgação dos Manuais de História da Educação da coleção Atualidades Pedagógicas (1951-1979) e os Programas de Pós-graduação em Educação e História (1980 - 2000). Entre 1951 e finais de 1970 observa-se a influência dos Manuais de História da Educação, na organização e programação do ensino de História da Educação e uma abordagem filosófica voltada para a história das ideias pedagógicas e análises do pensamento de filósofos e educadores sobre a educação e respectivas inserções em doutrinas filosóficas europeias. A partir de 1980 as abordagens de cunho econômico, político e ideológico dos contextos históricos educativos passaram a predominar nos programas de ensino das disciplinas de História da Educação I e II, e vigoraram até meados nos anos de 1990. Na disciplina de História da Educação I a abordagem é marcada por análises do contexto de produção e organização das classes sociais; com relação à disciplina História da Educação II, até meados de 1995, trata da educação brasileira. A partir da abordagem fundamentada na Teoria da Dependência após 1995, os documentos consultados começam a mostrar outras marcas que sugerem uma abordagem voltada para a dimensão política e social, abordando a História da Educação Brasileira, a partir dos movimentos sociais e seus respectivos projetos educacionais.

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo geral compreender a proposta/ prática curricular do Atendimento Educacional Especializado (AEE) na Sala de Recursos Multifuncionais (SRM) enquanto função complementar na educação da criança pequena com deficiência e Transtornos Globais do Desenvolvimento (TGD). Partimos das constatações de que, nas duas últimas décadas, documentos oficiais, assim como pesquisas na área, apontam a necessidade de um trabalho pedagógico inclusivo, que atenda às demandas e características dos diferentes sujeitos matriculados. Questionamos se a proposta e prática curricular complementar do AEE, por meio da SRM, têm contribuído para a inclusão da criança pequena, público alvo da educação especial, nas práticas pedagógicas da sala de aula comum? Teoricamente buscamos as contribuições da Abordagem Histórico-Cultural para compreender o desenvolvimento e aprendizagem da criança com deficiência, assim como procuramos a interlocução com os teóricos do currículo, entre os quais Sacristán. Como metodologia, utilizamos a pesquisa-ação colaborativo-crítico. O lócus da pesquisa foi um Centro de Educação Infantil, situado em Vitória/ES, com uma sala de recurso multifuncional, modelo proposto pelo Ministério da Educação (MEC). Os sujeitos participantes foram crianças de 3 a 7 anos matriculadas no Centro Municipal de Educação Infantil (CMEI) e encaminhadas para o AEE, na SRM (seis crianças surdas, sete crianças com manifestações de TGD e uma criança com Síndrome de Down); dois professores de educação especial da SRM (uma professora da área da área de Deficiência Intelectual (DI), uma professora bilíngue e um instrutor surdo); professores regentes do turno da manhã CMEI e dois pedagogos. Como perspectiva teórico-metodológica, optamos pela rede significações (Rossetti-Ferreira, 2004) que tem seus pressupostos fundamentados na teoria histórico-cultural, que compreende os processos de desenvolvimento humano como atos de significação constituídos por múltiplas interações estabelecidas social e culturalmente pelos sujeitos durante toda a vida. A organização e análise dos dados ocorreram por meio dos movimentos, cenários e atores; as práticas curriculares inclusivas na/da escola: a SRM e a sala de aula comum em seus encontros e desencontros; a preocupação com o desenvolvimento psicomotor da criança; o brincar versus a aquisição da leitura e escrita; o diálogo entre o currículo da SRM e a sala de aula comum e os encontros colaborativos com os professores de educação especial, com as pedagogas e com as professoras regentes do CMEI. Algumas considerações importantes se destacam, entre as quais: a falta de formação e desconhecimento por parte dos professores de educação especial sobre a proposta curricular da educação infantil e práticas pedagógicas descontextualizadas e fragmentadas desenvolvidas na SRM, que dificultam a ação complementar ao trabalho da classe comum. Para as professoras das salas de atividades o AEE é viável na escola de educação infantil, mas não somente na SRM, concordam que deve haver o atendimento educacional especializado no turno em que a criança esteja matriculada; que ele pode ajudar na inclusão da criança público alvo da educação especial, por meio de práticas sociais e culturais lúdicas, linguísticas e intelectuais. Concluímos que as professoras desejam um AEE dinâmico, interlocutor, que se movimente na escola como um todo.
