We study muon-spin rotation (mu SR) spectra in the mixed phase of highly anisotropic layered superconductors, specifically Bi2+xSr2-xCaCu2O8+delta (BSCCO), by modeling the fluid and solid phases of pancake Vortices using liquid-state and density functional methods. The role of thermal fluctuations in causing motional narrowing of mu SR line shapes is quantified in terms of a first-principles theory of the flux-lattice melting transition. The effects of random point pinning are investigated using a replica treatment of liquid-state correlations and a replicated density functional theory. Our results indicate that motional narrowing in the pure system, although substantial, cannot account for the remarkably small linewidths obtained experimentally at relatively high fields and low temperatures. We find that satisfactory agreement with the mu SR data for BSCCO in this regime can be obtained through the ansatz that this ''phase'' is characterized by frozen short-range positional correlations reflecting the structure of the liquid just above the melting transition. This proposal is consistent with recent suggestions of a ''pinned liquid'' or ''glassy'' state of pancake Vortices in the presence of pinning disorder. Our results for the high-temperature liquid phase indicate that measurable linewidths may be obtained in this phase as a consequence of density inhomogeneities induced by the pinning disorder. The results presented here comprise a unified, first-principles theoretical treatment of mu SR spectra in highly anisotropic layered superconductors in terms of a controlled set of approximations. The photochromic, electrochromic and x-ray irradiation damages (commonly called the gray tracks) produced in KTiOPO4 single crystals have been studied using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Gray tracks were produced in this material by exposure to high laser powers (similar to MW/cm(2)), application of electric fields (similar to kV), and exposure to x rays (30 kV). The PL spectra recorded for such gray tracked samples at 4.2 K, exhibited a luminescence band in the 1-1.8 eV range with a peak at 1.41 eV. Temperature and excitation intensity dependence of PL peaks were carried out to probe the exact nature of the broad emission band in the gray tracked samples. The observed photoluminescence is attributed to transitions in the Ti3+ levels, created on irradiation. The microscopic effects produced in the crystal by electric field, optical field, and x rays are similar, as can be concluded from the similarity of PL spectra as well as their intensity and temperature dependences. Single crystals of Bi2V1-xGexO5.5-x/2 (x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6) were grown by slow cooling of melts. Bismuth vanadate transforms from an orthorhombic to a tetragonal structure and subsequently to an orthorhombic system when the Ge4+ concentration was varied from x = 0.2 to x = 0.6. All of these compositions crystallized in polar space groups (Aba2, F4mm, and Fmm2 for x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6, respectively). The structures were fully determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Passing a H-2-CH4 mixture over oxide spinels containing two transition elements as in Mg0.8MyMz'Al2O4 (M, M' = Fe, Co or Ni, y + z = 0.2) at 1070 degrees C produces small alloy nanoparticles which enable the formation of carbon nanotubes. Surface area measurements are found to be useful for assessing the yield and quality of the nanotubes. Good-quality single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) have been obtained in high yields with the FeCo alloy nanoparticles, as evidenced by transmission electron microscope images and surface area measurements. The diameter of the SWNTs is in the 0.8-5 nm range, and the multiwalled nanotubes, found occasionally, possess very few graphite layers. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Chlorine-35 NQR frequency and spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as a function of temperature in the range 77-300 K were carried out on 2-amino-3,5-dichloropyridine. Two NQR signals were observed and were assigned to the two chlorines present in the molecule using the additive model for substituent effects. The temperature dependence of the NQR frequency was analysed in terms of the torsional oscillations of the molecule and the torsional frequencies and their temperature dependence were calculated numerically using a two-mode approximation. The temperature dependence of the NQR spin-lattice relaxation time was found to be mainly due to the torsional oscillations of the molecule, with anharmonicity effects showing up at higher temperatures. We discuss a recently formulated microscopic theory of the unusual coexistence of spin density waves (SDWs) and charge density waves (CDWs) that has been seen in recent experiments on (TMTTF)2Br, (TMTSF)2PF6 and α-(BEDT-TTF)2MHg(SCN)4.

Recent experiments indicate that the spin-density waves (SDWs) in (TMTTF)(2)Br, (TMTSF)(2)PF6, and alpha-(BEDT-TTF)(2)MHg(SCN)(4) are highly unconventional and coexist with charge-density waves (CDWs). We present a microscopic theory of this unusual CDW-SDW coexistence. A complete understanding requires the explicit inclusion of strong Coulomb interactions, lattice discreteness, the anisotropic two-dimensional nature of the lattice, and the correct hand filling within the starting Hamiltonian. Common water ice (ice I-h) is an unusual solid-the oxygen atoms form a periodic structure but the hydrogen atoms are highly disordered due to there being two inequivalent O-H bond lengths'. Pauling showed that the presence of these two bond lengths leads to a macroscopic degeneracy of possible ground states(2,3), such that the system has finite entropy as the temperature tends towards zero. The dynamics associated with this degeneracy are experimentally inaccessible, however, as ice melts and the hydrogen dynamics cannot be studied independently of oxygen motion(4). An analogous system(5) in which this degeneracy can be studied is a magnet with the pyrochlore structure-termed 'spin ice'-where spin orientation plays a similar role to that of the hydrogen position in ice I-h. Here we present specific-heat data for one such system, Dy2Ti2O7, from which we infer a total spin entropy of 0.67Rln2. This is similar to the value, 0.71Rln2, determined for ice I-h, SO confirming the validity of the correspondence. We also find, through application of a magnetic field, behaviour not accessible in water ice-restoration of much of the ground-state entropy and new transitions involving transverse spin degrees of freedom.

A series of 2-haloethoxyethyl cholesteryl ethers has been synthesized. Each material shows attractive liquid-crystalline properties as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy, and temperature-dependence of selective reflection characteristic of the cholesteric mesophase. These are interesting examples of simple, nonpolymeric, single component systems that show the cholesteric mesophase at room temperature.

A single-source network is said to be memory-free if all of the internal nodes (those except the source and the sinks) do not employ memory but merely send linear combinations of the incoming symbols (received at their incoming edges) on their outgoing edges. Memory-free networks with delay using network coding are forced to do inter-generation network coding, as a result of which the problem of some or all sinks requiring a large amount of memory for decoding is faced. In this work, we address this problem by utilizing memory elements at the internal nodes of the network also, which results in the reduction of the number of memory elements used at the sinks. We give an algorithm which employs memory at all the nodes of the network to achieve single- generation network coding. For fixed latency, our algorithm reduces the total number of memory elements used in the network to achieve single- generation network coding. We also discuss the advantages of employing single-generation network coding together with convolutional network-error correction codes (CNECCs) for networks with unit- delay and illustrate the performance gain of CNECCs by using memory at the intermediate nodes using simulations on an example network under a probabilistic network error model.

Recently, a special class of complex designs called Training-Embedded Complex Orthogonal Designs (TE-CODs) has been introduced to construct single-symbol Maximum Likelihood decodable (SSD) distributed space-time block codes (DSTBCs) for two-hop wireless relay networks using the amplify and forward protocol. However, to implement DSTBCs from square TE-CODs, the overhead due to the transmission of training symbols becomes prohibitively large as the number of relays increase. In this paper, we propose TE-Coordinate Interleaved Orthogonal Designs (TE-CIODs) to construct SSD DSTBCs. Exploiting the block diagonal structure of TE-CIODs, we show that the overhead due to the transmission of training symbols to implement DSTBCs from TE-CIODs is smaller than that for TE-CODs. We also show that DSTBCs from TE-CIODs offer higher rate than those from TE-CODs for identical number of relays while maintaining the SSD and full-diversity properties.

Performance of space-time block codes can be improved using the coordinate interleaving of the input symbols from rotated M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) constellations. This paper is on the performance analysis of coordinate-interleaved space-time codes, which are a subset of single-symbol maximum likelihood decodable linear space-time block codes, for wireless multiple antenna terminals. The analytical and simulation results show that full diversity is achievable. Using the equivalent single-input single-output model, simple expressions for the average bit error rates are derived over flat uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. Optimum rotation angles are found by finding the minimum of the average bit error rate curves.

A scheme to apply the rate-1 real orthogonal designs (RODs) in relay networks with single real-symbol decodability of the symbols at the destination for any arbitrary number of relays is proposed. In the case where the relays do not have any information about the channel gains from the source to themselves, the best known distributed space time block codes (DSTBCs) for k relays with single real-symbol decodability offer an overall rate of complex symbols per channel use. The scheme proposed in this paper offers an overall rate of 2/2+k complex symbol per channel use, which is independent of the number of relays. Furthermore, in the scenario where the relays have partial channel information in the form of channel phase knowledge, the best known DSTBCs with single real-symbol decodability offer an overall rate of 1/3 complex symbols per channel use. In this paper, making use of RODs, a scheme which achieves the same overall rate of 1/3 complex symbols per channel use but with a decoding delay that is 50 percent of that of the best known DSTBCs, is presented. Simulation results of the symbol error rate performance for 10 relays, which show the superiority of the proposed scheme over the best known DSTBC for 10 relays with single real-symbol decodability, are provided.

We explore the salient features of the `Kitaev ladder', a two-legged ladder version of the spin-1/2 Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice, by mapping it to a one-dimensional fermionic p-wave superconducting system. We examine the connections between spin phases and topologically non-trivial phases of non-interacting fermionic systems, demonstrating the equivalence between the spontaneous breaking of global Z(2) symmetry in spin systems and the existence of isolated Majorana modes. In the Kitaev ladder, we investigate topological properties of the system in different sectors characterized by the presence or absence of a vortex in each plaquette of the ladder. We show that vortex patterns can yield a rich parameter space for tuning into topologically non-trivial phases. We introduce and employ a new topological invariant for explicitly determining the presence of zero energy Majorana modes at the boundaries of such phases. Finally, we discuss dynamic quenching between topologically non-trivial phases in the Kitaev ladder and, in particular, the post-quench dynamics governed by tuning through a quantum critical point.

We present a comparative study of the spin states and electronic properties of La1-xSrxCoO3 and La2-xSrxLi0.5Co0.5O4 using X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy at both the O-K and Co-L-2.3 thresholds. In the La2-xSrxLi0.5Co0.5O4 system the CoO6 octahedra are isolated, the holes induced by Sr doping are trapped in the isolated Co(IV)O-6 octahedra, and a low-spin state is found for the Co ions, which does not change upon Sr doping. In the La1-xSrxCoO3 system, the interconnected CoO6 octahedra, with a 180degrees Co-O-Co bond angle, give rise to a transition from low-spin to intermediate-spin state with a ferromagnetic alignment of the Co spins. The double-exchange, ferromagnetic coupling between Co ions mediated by the 180degrees bond angle is responsible for suppressing the low spin-state. We find that the branching ratio of spectral intensities at the L-2 and L-3 thresholds in the Co-L-2.3 X-ray absorption spectra is sensitive to the spin state of the Co ions allowing its direct spectroscopic determination.
