Year-class formation in Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) estimated from spawning-date distributions of juveniles in San Francisco Bay, California

Inter and intra-annual variation in year-class strength was analyzed for San Francisco Bay Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) by using otoliths of juveniles. Juvenile herring were collected from March through June in 1999 and 2000 and otoliths from subsamples of these collections were aged by daily otolith increment analysis. The composition of the year classes in 1999 and 2000 were determined by back-calculating the birth date distribution for surviving juvenile herring. In 2000, 729% more juveniles were captured than in 1999, even though an estimated 12% fewer eggs were spawned in 2000. Spawning-date distributions show that survival for the 2000 year class was exceptionally good for a short (approximately 1 month) period of spawning, resulting in a large abundance of juvenile recruits. Analysis of age at size shows that growth rate increased significantly as the spawning season progressed both in 1999 and 2000. However, only in 2000 were the bulk of surviving juveniles a product of the fast growth period. In the two years examined, year-class strength was not predicted by the estimated number of eggs spawned, but rather appeared to depend on survival of eggs or larvae (or both) through the juvenile stage. Fast growth through the larval stage may have little effect on year-class strength if mortality during the egg stage is high and few larvae are available.

Cruises of the Albatross off San Diego and Other Parts of Southern California, 1889–1916

Between 1889 and 1916, the U. S. Fish Commission steamer Albatross made numerous trips to waters off southern California, particularly in and near San Diego Bay. The typical pattern for many years was to conduct cruises in waters off the Pacific Northwest or Alaska in summer months and waters off southern California in winter months. The Albatross conducted the first depth soundings and benthic profiles for southern California waters and secured the first samples of many endemic marine animals of this region. Albatross collections formed the basis for numerous definitive monographs of invertebrates and vertebrates that were published in subsequent years. The Albatross anchored in San Diego Bay in 1894, conducting the first biological investigations of the bay, and returned to sample again in many subsequent years. The ship and its crew also examined Cortez and Tanner banks for exploitation potential and conducted the first biological investigations of southern California’s tuna stocks in 1915 and 1916.

A atitude interdisciplinar e o conhecimento: uma leitura da obra de Jorge Luis Borges

Essa dissertação faz parte da linha de pesquisa Currículo: sujeitos, conhecimento e cultura do grupo de pesquisa Currículo, identidade e diferença, coordenado pela professora doutora Elizabeth Fernandes de Macedo. Em meu trabalho, investigo como se pode estabelecer uma leitura que cruza saberes distintos entre si. Assim, parto da leitura de que o conhecimento na obra de Jorge Luis Borges é simples e uno, o que traz como consequência principal a ideia de que as especializações são efetivamente variações. Para efetuar uma análise no interior desse cenário, extraio também da obra de Borges a ferramenta da enumeração via princípios, buscando mostrar que um ponto de cruzamento reconcilia saberes, mas sem que este seja determinado previamente. Em outras palavras, esse ponto de cruzamento é forjado na articulação da linguagem. Feita essa nuance, localizo no primeiro capítulo a discussão da interdisciplinaridade, dialogando com a bibliografia acerca do tema, explorando nestes debates alguns dos seus intervalos e retirando daí possibilidades. No segundo capítulo, conjugo mais propriamente saberes distantes entre si como a filosofia, literatura, matemática e religião, justamente para enfatizar que essas manifestações do saber são variações do mesmo. E este mesmo não é inerte, mas sempre mais complexo, envolvendo sempre novas e bifurcadas manifestações. No terceiro capítulo, levo esse modo de leitura para abordar conceitos clássicos da pedagogia, uma vez mais para explorar intervalos. Portanto, ao longo da dissertação, costuro uma atitude interdisciplinar num horizonte em que o conhecimento é simples e uno como um modo de leitura em que o cruzamento dos saberes não é essencial e prévio

Lista comentada de la ictiofauna del Canal Beagle, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Iconografía.

A ciento veintidós años de las primeras menciones realizadas por Perugia en 1891 sobre peces del Canal Beagle, editamos la presente iconografía que incluye alrededor de treinta especies de las mencionadas por López et al., en 1996. Este trabajo, desarrollado en el CADIC dentro del proyecto Biología de los recursos ictícos del Canal de Beagle financiado por el CONICET, junto al publicado por Lloris y Rucabado (1991), proveyeron elementos de base para tener una visión más profunda del componente ictiofaunistíco de la región. En la presente publicación se destaca la magnífica obra del maestro Miguel Barbagallo, quién vuelca su capacidad y espíritu en estas láminas, las que además de su valor artístico son un aporte más a la consolidación del conocimiento de los recursos naturales de nuestro país.
