Communication: Nanostructural hybrid organic-inorganic lanthanide complex films were prepared in situ by use of a novel sol-gel precursor containing pendant triethoxy-silyl and carboxyl groups (see Figure). The resulting transparent and crack-free films gave rise to strong red or green emission, even at low lanthanide ion concentration. Phase separation and lanthanide ion aggregation were controlled at the nanoscale.

The catalytic behaviors of a novel liquid acid catalyst (composed of heteropolyacid and acetic acid) for alkylation of isobutane with butene was investigated. As a solvent acetic acid had a synergistic effect. It enhanced the acid strength of HPA and its stability. The conditions for the formation of the catalytically active phase were studied systematically. The content of crystal water of HPA and the quantity of solvent affect the formation of active phase and the catalytic activity. Catalytically active phase consists of HPA, acetic acid and hydrocarbon produced from the reaction, as well as traces of water from the crystal water of HPA. This catalyst system is comparable to the sulfuric acid in catalytic activity.

Shear may shift the phase boundary towards the homogeneous state (shear induced mixing, SIM), or in the opposite direction (shear induced demixing, SID). SIM is the typical behavior of mixtures of components of low molar mass and polymer solutions, SID can be observed with solutions of high molar mass polymers and polymer blends at higher shear rates. The typical sequence with increasing shear rate is SIM, then occurrence of an isolated additional immiscible area (SLD), melting of this island into the main miscibility gap, and finally SIM again. A three phase line originates and ends in two critical end points. Raising pressure increases the shear effects. For copolymer containing systems SID is sometimes observed at very low shear rates, preceding the just mentioned sequence of shear influences.

A novel method for the sensitive and selective determination of peroxydisulfate was proposed. It was based on an electrochemiluminescent method with Cr(bpy)(3)(3+). The applied potential was set at -0.5 V in Cr(bpy)(3)(3+) system which was much more positive than those in Ru(bpz)(3)(2+) and Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) systems. A linear calibration was obtained over the range of 7-100 mu mol l(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.993. The relative standard deviation was 2% for 10 replicate injections of 0.01 mol l(-1) S2O82- solution. The detection limit (S/N=3) was 1 mu mol l(-1). The method was successfully applied to determination of peroxydisulfate in phase transfer catalysis. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel liquid acid catalyst, composed of heteropolyacid and acetic acid for the alkylation of isobutane with butenes is reported. The conditions for the formation of catalytic active phase as well as its catalytic behaviors in alkylation of isobutane with butenes have been studied. It was found that acetic acid, as a solvent, exerts a synergistic effect on the acid strength of heteropolyacid, and the contents of crystal water in HPAs have influence over the formation of active phase and the catalytic activity. This novel catalyst is comparable to the sulfuric acid in catalytic activity.

The present report deals with some results on phase behavior, miscibility and phase separation for several polymer blends casting from solutions. These blends are grouped as the amorphous polymer blends, blends containing a crystalline polymer or two crystalline polymers. The blends of PMMA/PVAc were miscible and underwent phase separation at elevated temperature, exhibited LCST behavior. The benzoylated PPO has both UCST and LCST nature. For the systems composed of crystalline polymer poly(ethylene oxide) and amorphous polyurethane, of two crystalline polymers poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and poly[3,3,-bis-(chloromethyl) oxetane], appear a single T-g, indicating these blends are miscible. The interaction parameter B's were determined to be -14 J cm(-3), -15 J cm(-3) respectively. Phase separation of phenolphthalein poly(ether ether sulfone)/PEO blends were discussed in terms of thermal properties, such as their melting and crystallization behavior.

A series of layered mixed oxides La4BaCu5-xMnxO13+lambda(x = 0-5) was prepared, characterized and used as catalysts for NO+CO reaction. It was found that all the samples were single phase having a structure with five-layered-perovskite. La4BaCu2Mn3O13+lambda showed the highest activity in the title reaction, this could be attributed to the synergetic effect between Cu and Mn. The results of TPR, TPD and excess oxygen investigations confirmed that the Cu ion would be the active center. The displacement of the Cu ion by Mn caused the Cu ion to be more easily reducible and more content of excess oxygen, and it was beneficial to the activity of the catalyst. The reaction mechanism was also proposed.

Spherulites and lamellar single crystals of poly(aryl ether ketone ketone) containing isophthaloyl moieties (PEKK(I)) were obtained from dilute alpha-chloronaphthalene solution. The morphology and structure of the spherulites and single crystals were studied by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The spherulites were found to consist of elongated lamellar branches that grow with the b crystallographic axis in the radial direction. Single crystals possess a similar habit, with b parallel to the long axis, a transverse, and c perpendicular to the lamellae plane. High-resolution images of the PEKK(I) crystals which show the perfection of and defects in the crystals, were obtained, and many defects or dislocations a,ere observed. Two types of macromolecular free radicals similar to CH2CONH(C) over dotHCH(2) similar to (a) and similar to CH2(C) over dot = O (b) trapped in irradiated polyamide-1010 (PA1010) and PA1010 filled with neodymium oxide (Nd2O3) were characterized by an ESR approach. It is found that (a) is prevailingly trapped in the fold surface of the lamellae and (b) in the amorphous phase. This result suggests that trapped radicals mainly exist in the non-crystalline phases. The effect of the fold surface area of the lamellae on the behavior of the trapped radicals is discussed in this paper. Whether for the specimens with similar crystallinities, but different crystallite sizes, or for those with the same concentration of neodymium oxide, but different crystallinities, radical (a) exists dominantly in the specimen with a larger fold surface area of the lamellae. Under certain circumstances, radical (a) can transform into radical (b), obviously for a specimen with a larger fold surface area of the lamellae. It means that the fold surface area of the lamellae plays an important role in the transformation of radical (a) to (b). (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Concise probabilistic formulae with definite crystallographic implications are obtained from the distribution for eight three-phase structure invariants (3PSIs) in the case of a native protein and a heavy-atom derivative [Hauptman (1982). Acta Cryst. A38, 289-294] and from the distribution for 27 3PSIs in the case of a native and two derivatives [Fortier, Weeks & Hauptman (1984). Acta Cryst. A40, 646-651]. The main results of the probabilistic formulae for the four-phase structure invariants are presented and compared with those for the 3PSIs. The analysis directly leads to a general formula of probabilistic estimation for the n-phase structure invariants in the case of a native and m derivatives. The factors affecting the estimated accuracy of the 3PSIs are examined using the diffraction data from a moderate-sized protein. A method to estimate a set of the large-modulus invariants, each corresponding to one of the eight 3PSIs, that has the largest \Delta\ values and relatively large structure-factor moduli between the native and derivative is suggested, which remarkably improves the accuracy, and thus a phasing procedure making full use of all eight 3PSIs is proposed.

Square-wave voltommetry is used to study the oxidation of polypyrrole doped with dodecylsulfate. The net current curve in this experiment shows why the oxidation current does not display the capacitive-like shape common in cyclic voltammetry. In cyclic voltammetry, the redox behavior of polypyrrole is attributed to the size of dodecylsulfate, irreversible incorporation and the complete consumption of dodecylsulfate. After the polypyrrole film was scanned in aqueous NaCl solution, square wave voltammetric measurements show different results, indicating the change of the polymer nature with regard to the charge transport. This is explained by anion replacement, exclusion and the change of the charge transport mechanism.

Two soluble high-performance polyimides, poly(BCPOBDA/DMMDA) and poly(ODPA/DMMDA), in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C have been studied using laser light scattering. We found that the z-average radius of gyration ([R(g)]) can be scaled to the weight-average molecular weight (M(w)) as [R(g)] (nm) = 4.95 x 10(-2)M(w)(0.52) and [R(g)] (nm) = 1.25 x 10(-2)M(w)(0.66) respectively for poly(BCPOBDA/DMMDA) and poly(ODPA/DMMDA), indicating that poly(ODPA/DMMDA) in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C has a more extended chain conformation than poly(BCPOBDA/DMMDA). Using the wormlike chain model approach, we found that the Flory characteristic ratios (C*) of poly(BCPOBDA/DMMDA) and poly(ODPA/DMMDA) are similar to 20 and similar to 31, respectively, indicating that both of them have a slightly extended chain conformation in comparison with typical flexible polymer chains, such as polystyrene, whose C-infinity is similar to 10. A combination of the weight-average molar mass (M(w)) with the translational diffusion coefficient distributions (G(D)) has led to D (cm(2)/s) = 3.53 x 10(-4)M(-0.579) and D (cm(2)/s) = 4.30 x 10(-4)M(-0.613) respectively for two soluble high-performance polyimides, poly(BCPOBDA/DMMDA) and poly(ODPA/DMMTA), in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C. Using these two calibrations, we have successfully characterized the molar mass distributions of the two polyimides from their corresponding G(D)s. The exponents of these two calibrations further confirm that both of the polyimides have a slightly extended coil chain conformation in CHCl3. The chain flexibility difference between these two polyimides has also been discussed.

Phase behavior of blends of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) with four styrene-butadienestyrene (SBS) triblock copolymers, being of various molecular weights, architecture, and compositions, was investigated by small-angle light scattering. Small-angle X-ray scattering investigation was accomplished for one blend. Low critical solution temperature (LCST) and a unique phase behavior, resembling upper critical solution temperature (UCST), were observed. It was found that the architecture of the copolymer greatly influenced the phase behavior of the blends. Random phase approximation theory was used to calculate the spinodal phase transition curves of the ABA/C and BAB/C systems; LCST and resembling UCST phase behavior were observed as the parameters of the system changed. Qualitatively, the experimental and the theoretical results are consistent with each other. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The miscibility and phase behavior of polysulfone (PSF) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) with a series of copoly(ether ether ketone) (COPEEK), a random copolymer of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), and phenolphthalein poly(ether ether ketone) (PEK-C) was studied using differential scanning calorimetry. A COPEEK copolymer containing 6 mol % ether ether ketone (EEK) repeat units is miscible with PSF, whereas copolymers containing 12 mol % EEK and more are not. COPEEK copolymers containing 6 and 12 mol % EEK are completely miscible with phenoxy, but those containing 24 mol % EEK and more are immiscible with phenoxy. Moreover, a copolymer containing 17 mol % EEK is partially miscible with phenoxy; the blends show two transitions in the midcomposition region and single transitions at either extreme. Two T(g)s were observed for the 50/50 blend of phenoxy with the copolymer containing 17 mol % EEK, whereas a single composition-dependent T-g appeared for all the other compositions. An FTIR study revealed that there exist hydrogen-bonding interactions between phenoxy and the copolymers. The strengths of the hydrogen-bonding interactions in the blends of the COPEEK copolymers containing 6 and 12 mol % EEK are the same as that in the phenoxy/PEK-C blend. However, for the blends of copolymers containing 17, 24, and 28 mol % EEK, the hydrogen-bonding interactions become increasingly unfavorable and the self-association of the hydroxyl groups of phenoxy is preferable as the content of EEK units in the copolymer increases. The observed miscibility was interpreted qualitatively in terms of the mean-field approach. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The hetero atom substituted aluminophosphate molecular sieves Me-VPI-5(Me = Mgt Ti, Sn, Si) were synthesized hydrothermally. Rare earth ions are originally doped into these microporous materials by aqueous solution ion exchange procedures. The phase transitions of the microporous materials are investigated by high-temperature and high-pressure experimental techniques. The influence of the phase transitions on the rare earth ions' spectral structures is discussed, With the increase of temperature, Eu(II)Mg-VPI-5 is converted into Eu(II)Mg-AIPO(4)-8, then into tridymite phase. The pressure has a notable influence on Eu(II) ion's spectral structures. The spectral structures have changed regularly with the increase of pressure.
