Ethylene gas is burnt and the carbon soot particles are thermophoretically collected using a home-built equipment where the fuel air injection and intervention into the 7.5-cm long flame are controlled using three small pneumatic cylinders and computer-driven controllers. The physical and mechanical properties and tribological performance of the collected soot are compared with those of carbon black and diesel soot. The crystalline structures of the nanometric particles generated in the flame, as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron studies, are shown to vary from the flame root to the exhaust. As the particle journeys upwards the flame, through a purely amorphous coagulated phase at the burner nozzle, it leads to a well-defined crystalline phase shell in the mid-flame zone and to a disordered phase consisting of randomly distributed short-range crystalline order at the exhaust. In the mid-flame region, a large shell of radial-columnar order surrounds a dense amorphous core. The hardness and wear resistance as well as friction coefficient of the soot extracted from this zone are low. The mechanical properties characteristics of this zone may be attributed to microcrystalline slip. Moving towards the exhaust, the slip is inhibited and there is an increase in hardness and friction compared to those in the mid-flame zone. This study of the comparison of flame soot to carbon black and diesel soot is further extended to suggest a rationale based on additional physico-chemical study using micro-Raman spectroscopy.

Solubilization of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in aqueous milieu by self assembly of bivalent glycolipids is described. Thorough analysis of the resulting composites involving Vis/near-IR spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance, confocal Raman and atomic force microscopy reveals that glycolipid-coated SWNTs possess specific molecular recognition properties towards lectins.

The numerical solutions are obtained for skin friction, heat transfer to the wall and growth of boundary layer along the flat plate by employing two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations governing the hypersonic flow coupled with species continuity equations. Flow fields have been computed along the flat plate in CO2 atmosphere in the presence of transpiration cooling using air and carbon dioxide.

As-prepared single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are generally mixtures of semiconducting and metallic species, the proportion of the former being around 67%. Since most applications of SWNTs are best served by semiconducting or metallic nanotubes, rather than by mixtures of the two, methods which would directly yield semiconducting and metallic SWNTs in pure form are desirable. In this article, we present the available methods for the direct synthesis of such SWNTs along with the methods available to separate semiconducting and metallic SWNTs from mixtures. We also discuss the synthesis of Y-junction carbon nanotubes.

We report the synthesis of aligned arrays of millimeter long carbon nanotubes (CNTs), from benzene and ferrocene as the molecular precursor and catalyst respectively, by a one-step chemical vapor deposition technique. The length of the grown CNTs depends on the reaction temperature and increases from similar to 85 mu m to similar to 1.4 mm when the synthesis temperature is raised from 650 to 1100 degrees C, while the tube diameter is almost independent of the preparation temperature and is similar to 80 nm. The parallel arrangement of the CNTs, as well as their tube diameter can be verified spectroscopically by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies. Based on electron diffraction scattering (EDS) studies of the top and the base of the CNT films, a root growth process can be deduced.

In this paper we report resonance Raman scattering from graphite covering excitation energies in the range 2.4 eV to 6 eV. The Raman excitation profile shows a maximum at 4.94 eV (lambda = 251nm) for the G - band (1582 cm(-1)). The D-band at similar to 1350 cm(-1), attributed to disorder activated Raman scattering, does not show up in Raman spectra recorded with excitation wavelengths smaller than 257.3 nm, revealing that the resonance enhancements of the G and D-modes are widely different. Earlier Raman measurements in carbon materials have also revealed a very large and unusual dependence of the D - mode frequency on excitation laser wavelength. This phenomenon is also observed in carbon nanotubes. In this paper we show for the first time that the above unusual dependence arises from the disorder - induced double resonance mechanism.

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) electronically wired by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and in-situ transformed graphitic carbon for lithium-ion batteries are discussed here. Presence of MWCNTs up to a maximum of 0.5% in porous LiFePO4 (abbreviated as LFP-CNT) resulted in remarkable reversible cyclability and rate capability compared to LFP coated with highly disordered carbon (abbreviated as LFP-C). In the current range (30-1500) mAg(-1), specific capacity of LFP-CNT (approximate to 150-50 mAhg(-1)) is observed to be always higher compared to LFP-C (approximate to 120-0 mAhg(-1)). At higher currents of 250-1500 mAg(-1) LFP-C performed poorly compared to LFP-CNT. LFP-C showed considerable decay in capacity with increase in cycle number at intermediate high currents (approximate to 250 mAg(-1)) whereas at very high currents (approximate to 750 mAg(-1)) it is nearly zero. The LFP-CNT showed no such detrimental behavior in battery performance. The exemplary performance of the LFP-CNT is attributed to combination of both enhanced LFP structural stability, as revealed by Raman spectra and formation of an efficient percolative network of carbon nanotubes which during the course of galvanostatic cycling gets gradually transformed to graphitic carbon. In this paper, an ultrasonic wave propagation analysis in single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is re-studied using nonlocal elasticity theory, to capture the whole behaviour. The SWCNT is modeled using Flugge's shell theory, with the wall having axial, circumferential and radial degrees of freedom and also including small scale effects. Nonlocal governing equations for this system are derived and wave propagation analysis is also carried out. The revisited nonlocal elasticity calculation shows that the wavenumber tends to infinite at certain frequencies and the corresponding wave velocity tends to zero at those frequencies indicating localization and stationary behavior. This frequency is termed as escape frequency. This behavior is observed only for axial and radial waves in SWCNT. It has been shown that the circumferential waves will propagate dispersively at higher frequencies in nonlocality. The magnitudes of wave velocities of circumferential waves are smaller in nonlocal elasticity as compared to local elasticity. We also show that the explicit expressions of cut-off frequency depend on the nonlocal scaling parameter and the axial wavenumber. The effect of axial wavenumber on the ultrasonic wave behavior in SWCNTs is also discussed. The present results are compared with the corresponding results (for first mode) obtained from ab initio and 3-D elastodynamic continuum models. The acoustic phonon dispersion relation predicted by the present model is in good agreement with that obtained from literature. The results are new and can provide useful guidance for the study and design of the next generation of nanodevices that make use of the wave propagation properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

We investigate the walls of the defective multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), and give possible mechanism for the formation of defective structure. A generalized model has been proposed for the MWCNT. which consists of (a) catalyst part, (b) embryo part and (c) full grown part. We claim that the weak embryo portion of the MWCNT, is structurally undeveloped. The stress due to pressure imbalance between inside and outside of the MWCNT during growth along with axial load at the embryo portion causes distortion, which is the source of bending and making the walls of the MWCNT off-concentric. At the later stage the stressed embryo retain the distorted structure and get transformed into fully gown defective CNT. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Carbon nanosheets (CNSs) have been synthesized by electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using a mixture of acetylene and argon gases on copper foil as the substrate. Micrometer-wide carbon sheets consisting of several atomic layers thick graphene sheets have been synthesized by controlled decomposition of carbon radicals in ECR-PECVD. Raman spectroscopy of these films revealed characteristics of a disordered graphitic sheet. Thick folded carbon-sheets and a semi transparent freestanding CNSs have been observed by scanning electron microscopy. This is a promising technique to synthesize free standing CNSs and can be used in the fabrication of nanoelecronic devices in future. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
