In this study the cooling performance due to air flow and aerodynamics of the Formula Student open wheeled race car has been investigated and optimized with the help of CFD simulations and experimental validation. The race car in context previously suffered from overheating problems. Flow analysis was carried out based on the detailed race car 3D model (NITK Racing 2012 formula student race car). Wind tunnel experiments were carried out on the same. The results obtained from the computer simulations are compared with experimental results obtained from wind tunnel testing of the full car. Through this study it was possible to locate the problem areas and hence choose the best configuration for the cooling duct. The CFD analysis helped in calculating the mass flow rate, pressure and velocity distribution for different velocities of the car which is then used to determine the heat dissipated by the radiator. Area of flow separation could be visualized and made sure smooth airflow into the radiator core area. This significantly increased the cooling performance of the car with reduction in drag.

Heat and mass transfer studies in a calandria based reactor is quite complex both due to geometry and due to the complex mixing flow. It is challenging to devise optimum operating conditions with efficient but safe working range for such a complex configuration. Numerical study known to be very effective is taken up for investigation. In the present study a 3D RANS code with turbulence model has been used to compute the flow fields and to get the heat transfer characteristics to understand certain design parameters of engineering importance. The angle of injection and of the coolant liquid has a large effect on the heat transfer within the reactor.

We provide experimental evidence supporting the vectorial theory for determining electric field at and near the geometrical focus of a cylindrical lens. This theory provides precise distribution of field and its polarization effects. Experimental results show a close match (approximate to 95% using (2)-test) with the simulation results (obtained using vectorial theory). Light-sheet generated both at low and high NA cylindrical lens shows the importance of vectorial theory for further development of light-sheet techniques. Potential applications are in planar imaging systems (such as, SPIM, IML-SPIM, imaging cytometry) and spectroscopy. Microsc. Res. Tech. 77:105-109, 2014. (c) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

In this work, the fracture behavior of magnesium single crystals is studied by conducting experiments with notched three point bend specimens of three crystallographic orientations. In the first and second orientations, the c-axis is along the normal to the flat surface of the notch, while in the third it is aligned with the notch front. For all the orientations, in situ electron back scattered diffraction observations made around the notch root show profuse tensile twinning of {10 (1) over bar2} type. Further, in the first two orientations basal and prismatic slip traces are identified from optical metallography. The width of the most prominent twin saturates at around 120-150 mu m, while twins continue to nucleate farther away to accommodate plastic deformation. In all the orientations, crack initiation occurs before the attainment of peak load and the crack grows stably along twin-matrix interface before deflecting at twin-twin intersections. Results show that profuse tensile twinning is an important energy dissipating mechanism that enhances the fracture toughness. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The thermoacoustic prime mover (TAPM) has gained considerable attention as a pressure wave generator to drive pulse tube refrigerator (PTR) due to no moving parts, reasonable efficiency, use of environmental friendly working fluids etc. To drive PTCs, lower frequencies (f) with larger pressure amplitudes (Delta P) are essential, which are affected by geometric and operating parameters of TAPM as well as working fluids. For driving PTRs, a twin standing wave TAPM is built and studied by using different working fluids such as helium, argon, nitrogen and their binary mixtures. Simulation results of DeltaEc are compared with experimental data wherever possible. DeltaEc predicts slightly increased resonance frequencies, but gives larger Delta P and lower temperature difference Delta T across stack. High mass number working fluid leads to lower frequency with larger Delta P, but higher Delta T. Studies indicate that the binary gas mixture of right composition with lower Delta T can be arrived at to drive TAPM of given geometry. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd and IIR. All rights reserved.

The objective of this study is to analyse the performance of thermoacoustic refrigerator (TAR) measured in terms of hot end temperature and temperature difference across refrigerator stack with two different spacing namely 0.4 mm and 0.8 mm and stack used in refrigerating section was made of low thermal conductivity materials namely Mylar sheet and photographic film & the experiments were carried out at 1 MPa pressure using helium as working fluid. High powered acoustic wave with frequency of 460 Hz and pressure amplitude of congruent to 0.07 MPa was obtained from twin thermoacoustic prime mover (TAPM) and this acoustic wave produced temperature difference of 16 degrees C across the Mylar sheet stack made of 0.4 mm spacing in refrigerator section. From this study, it has been inferred that twin TAPM can act as efficient drive for TAR. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd and IIR. All rights reserved.

Experiments involving heating of liquid droplets which are acoustically levitated, reveal specific modes of oscillations. For a given radiation flux, certain fluid droplets undergo distortion leading to catastrophic bag type breakup. The voltage of the acoustic levitator has been kept constant to operate at a nominal acoustic pressure intensity, throughout the experiments. Thus the droplet shape instabilities are primarily a consequence of droplet heating through vapor pressure, surface tension and viscosity. A novel approach is used by employing Legendre polynomials for the mode shape approximation to describe the thermally induced instabilities. The two dominant Legendre modes essentially reflect (a) the droplet size reduction due to evaporation, and (b) the deformation around the equilibrium shape. Dissipation and inter-coupling of modal energy lead to stable droplet shape while accumulation of the same ultimately results in droplet breakup. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Although grain boundary sliding (GBS) has been recognized as an important process during high-temperature deformation in crystalline materials, there is paucity in experimental data for characterizing a constitutive equation for GBS. High-temperature tensile creep experiments were conducted, together with measurements of GBS at different strains, stresses, grain sizes, and temperatures. Experimental data obtained on a Mg AZ31 alloy demonstrate that, for the first time, dynamic recrystallization during creep does not alter the contribution of GBS to creep during high-temperature deformation. The experimentally observed invariance of the sliding contribution with strain was used together with the creep data for developing a constitutive equation for GBS in a manner similar to the standard creep equation. Using this new approach, it is demonstrated that the stress, grain size, and temperature dependence for creep and GBS are identical. This is rationalized by a model based on GBS controlled by dislocations, within grains or near-grain boundaries. (C) The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2013

The paper analyses the results of experiments on the propagation rate in a fuel bed under gasification conditions in a co-current reactor configuration. Experiments using wood chips with different values of moisture content have been conducted under gasification conditions. The influence of air mass flux on the propagation rate, peak temperature and gas quality is investigated. It is observed from the experiments that the flame front propagation rate initially increases as the air mass flux increased, reaching a peak propagation rate, and further increase in the air mass flux results in a decrease in the propagation rate. However, the bed movement increases with the increase in air mass flux. The experimental results provide an understanding on influence of the fuel properties on propagation front. The surface area per unit volume of the particles in the packed bed plays an important role in the propagation rate. It has been argued that the flaming pyrolysis contributes towards the flame propagation as opposed to the overall combustion process in a packed bed. The calorific value of the producer gas generated is nearly the same over the entire range of air mass flux for bone-dry and 10% moist wood. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An aeroelastic analysis is used to investigate the rate dependent hysteresis in piezoceramic actuators and its effect on helicopter vibration control with trailing edge flaps. Hysteresis in piezoceramic materials can cause considerable complications in the use of smart actuators as prime movers in applications such as helicopter active vibration control. Dynamic hysteresis of the piezoelectric stack actuator is investigated for a range of frequencies (5 Hz (1/rev) to 30 Hz (6/rev)) which are of practical importance for helicopter vibration analysis. Bench top tests are conducted on a commercially available piezoelectric stack actuator. Frequency dependent hysteretic behavior is studied experimentally for helicopter operational frequencies. Material hysteresis in the smart actuator is mathematically modeled using the theory of conic sections. Numerical simulations are also performed at an advance ratio of 0.3 for vibration control analysis using a trailing edge flap with an idealized linear and a hysteretic actuator. The results indicate that dynamic hysteresis has a notable effect on the hub vibration levels. It is found that the theory of conic sections offers a straight forward approach for including hysteresis into aeroelastic analysis.

Adhesives are widely used to execute the assembly of aerospace and automotive structures due to their ability to join dissimilar materials, reduced stress concentration, and improved fatigue resistance. The mechanical behavior of adhesive joints can be studied either using analytical models or by conducting mechanical tests. However, the complexity owing to multiple interfaces, layers with different properties, material and geometric nonlinearity and its three-dimensional nature combine to increase the difficulty in obtaining an overall system of governing equations to predict the joint behavior. On the other hand, experiments are often time consuming and expensive due to a number of parameters involved. Finite element analysis (FEA) is profoundly used in recent years to overcome these limitations. The work presented in this paper involves the finite element modeling and analysis of a composite single lap joint where the adhesive-adherend interface region was modeled using connector elements. The computed stresses were compared with the experimental stresses obtained using digital image correlation technique. The results showed an agreement. Further, the failure load predicted using FEA was found to be closer to the actual failure load obtained by mechanical tests.

The current understanding of wildfire effects on water chemistry is limited by the quantification of the elemental dissolution rates from ash and element release rate from the plant litter, as well as quantification of the specific ash contribution to stream water chemistry. The main objective of the study was to provide such knowledge through combination of experimental modelling, field data and end-member mixing analysis (EMMA) of wildfire impact on a watershed scale. The study concerns watershed effects of fire in the Indian subcontinent, a region that is typically not well represented in the fire science literature. In plant litter ash, major elements are either hosted in readily-soluble phases (K, Mg) such as salts, carbonates and oxides or in less-soluble carrier-phases (Si, Ca) such as amorphous silica, quartz and calcite. Accordingly, elemental release rates, inferred from ash leaching experiments in batch reactor, indicated that the element release into solution followed the order K > Mg > Na > Si > Ca. Experiments on plant litter leaching in mixed-flow reactor indicated two dissolution regimes: rapid, over the week and slower over the month. The mean dissolution rates at steady-state (R-ss) indicated that the release of major elements from plant litter followed the order Ca > Si > Cl > Mg > K > Na. R-ss for Si and Ca for tree leaves and herbaceous species are similar to those reported for boreal and European tree species and are higher than that from the dissolution of soil clay minerals. This identifies tropical plant litters as important source of Si and Ca for tropical surface waters. In the wildfire-impacted year 2004, the EMMA indicated that the streamflow composition (Ca, K, Mg, Na, Si, Cl) was controlled by four main sources: rainwater, throughfall, ash leaching and soil solution. The influence of the ash end-member was maximal early in the rainy season (the two first storm events) and decreased later in the rainy season, when the stream was dominated by the throughfall end-member. The contribution of plant litter decay to the streamwater composition for a year not impacted by wildfire is significant with estimated solute fluxes originating from this decay greatly exceed, for most major elements, the annual elemental dissolved fluxes at the Mule Hole watershed outlet. This highlighted the importance of solute retention and vegetation back uptake processes within the soil profile. Overall, the fire increased the mobility and export of major elements from the soils to the stream. It also shifted the vegetation-related contribution to the elemental fluxes at the watershed outlet from long-term (seasonal) to short-term (daily to monthly). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Isoniazid (isonicotinohydrazide) is an important first-line antitubercular drug that targets the InhA enzyme which synthesizes the critical component of the mycobacterial cell wall. An experimental charge-density analysis of isoniazid has been performed to understand its structural and electronic properties in the solid state. A high-resolution single-crystal X-ray intensity data has been collected at 90 K. An aspherical multipole refinement was carried out to explore the topological and electrostatic properties of the isoniazid molecule. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical charge-density calculations performed using CRYSTAL09 with the B3LYP/6-31G** method. A topological analysis of the electron density reveals that the Laplacian of electron density of the N-N bond is significantly less negative, which indicates that the charges at the b.c.p. (bond-critical point) of the bond are least accumulated, and so the bond is considered to be weak. As expected, a strong negative electrostatic potential region is present in the vicinity of the O1, N1 and N3 atoms, which are the reactive locations of the molecule. The C-H center dot center dot center dot N, C-H center dot center dot center dot O and N-H center dot center dot center dot N types of intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions stabilize the crystal structure. The topological analysis of the electron density on hydrogen bonding shows the strength of intermolecular interactions.

Blends of conventional fuels such as Jet-A1 (aviation kerosene) and diesel with bio-derived components, referred to as biofttels, are gradually replacing the conventional fuels in aircraft and automobile engines. There is a lack of understanding on the interaction of spray drops of such biofuels with solid surfaces. The present study is an experimental investigation on the impact of biofuel drops onto a smooth stainless steel surface. The biofuel is a mixture of 90% commercially available camelina-derived biofuel and 10% aromatics. Biofuel drops were generated using a syringe-hypodermic needle arrangement. On demand, the needle delivers an almost spherical drop with drop diameter in the range 2.05-2.15 mm. Static wetting experiments show that the biofuel drop completely wets the stainless steel surface and exhibits an equilibrium contact angle of 5.6. High speed video camera was used to capture the impact dynamics of biofuel drops with Weber number ranging from 20 to 570. The spreading dynamics and maximum spreading diameter of impacting biofuel drops on the target surface were analyzed. For the impact of high Weber number biofuel drops, the spreading law suggests beta similar to tau(0.5) where beta is the spread factor and tau, the nondimensionalized time. The experimentally observed trend of maximum spread factor, beta(max) of camelina biofuel drop on the target surface with We compares well with the theoretically predicted trend from Ukiwe-Kwok model. After reaching beta(max), the impacting biofuel drop undergoes a prolonged sluggish spreading due to the high wetting nature of the camelina biofuel-stainless steel system. As a result, the final spread factor is found to be a little more than beta(max). (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
