Aeronautical charts underlie the representation of aeronautic geographic information that supports pilots in flight. Nevertheless, charts become complex due to the high density of data and the different kinds that support each phase of flight. These features make difficult using them on board. After conducting a study that aims to understand and to evaluate pilot’s needs related to Geographic Information, it is proposed a solution to implement a platform based on geographic information standards (OGC, ISO) and supported by a distributed Web architecture. This platform facilitates the use, retrieval, updating of information and its exchange among different institutions through private and public users. As a first element to ensure interoperability and the harmonisation of information, we propose an aeronautical metadata profile that sets guidelines and elements for its description. This profile meets the standards set by ICAO, Eurocontrol and ISO. The platform offers three levels of access to data through different types of devices and user profiles. This paper suggests an alternative and reliable way for distributing aeronautical geoinformation, focusing on specific functions or displaying and querying.

Aeronautical charts underlie the representation of aeronautic geographic information that supports pilots in flight. Nevertheless, the charts become complex due to the high density of data and the different kinds of charts that support each phase of flight. These features make difficult using them on board. After conducting a study, with civil Spaniard pilots, that aims to understand and to evaluate their needs related to Geographic Information, it is proposed a solution to implement a platform based on geographic information standards (OGC, ISO) and supported by a distributed Web architecture. This platform facilitates the use, retrieval, updating of information and its exchange among different institutions through private and public users. The metadata profile meets the standards set by ICAO, Eurocontrol and ISO. The platform offers three levels of access to data through different types of devices and user profiles. Thus, aeronautical institutions could edit data while pilot is on board accessing digital aeronautical charts through a laptop or Table PC. This paper suggests an alternative and reliable way for distributing aeronautical geoinformation, focusing on specific functions or displaying and querying.

Cloud computing has seen an impressive growth in recent years, with virtualization technologies being massively adopted to create IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) public and private solutions. Today, the interest is shifting towards the PaaS (Platform as a Service) model, which allows developers to abstract from the execution platform and focus only on the functionality. There are several public PaaS offerings available, but currently no private PaaS solution is ready for production environments. To fill this gap a new solution must be developed. In this paper we present a key element for enabling this model: a cloud repository based on the OSGi component model. The repository stores, manages, provisions and resolves the dependencies of PaaS software components and services. This repository can federate with other repositories located in the same or different clouds, both private and public. This way, dependencies can be fulfilled collaboratively, and new business models can be implemented.

ABSTRACT The thesis entitled “El Poblado Dirigido de Caño Roto. Dialéctica entre morfología urbana y tipología edificatoria” [Poblado Dirigido of Caño Roto. Dialectic between urban morphology and typology] analyzes Caño Roto, a social housing neighborhood built in Madrid between 1957 and 1963, from the relationship between buildings and the resulting urban form. Also, this research develops a historiographical analysis of this project as well as the social, political, financial and legislative conditions present at time of its construction. This thesis concludes with a comparative study with other similar projects in temporal and geopolitical framework, urban approaches and some typological and constructive solutions. The research aims, on the one hand, to expand the current knowledge about Caño Roto, considered by many as one of the most important project at Spanish contemporary architecture; and, on the other hand, deducing from the study guidelines, criteria and strategies of urban design which can be extrapolated to contemporary architecture and urbanism. This way, we will be able to overcome current, but obsolete development models. However, we know that any response that suggests coming back to the past is destined to failure. Circumstances change and, consequently, solutions cannot be the same. But if the answers do not serve, questions are still right. Who is the protagonist of Caño Roto urban design? How do pedestrian and road traffic coexist together? What is the neighborhood’s density? How are residential, commercial and endowment uses articulated? How is urban fabric organized? What is the relationship between building types and the resulting urban morphology; and between private and public spaces? We start from the hypothesis that analysis, reflections and results arising from questioning Caño Roto about these, and many others, issues will enable us to have a comprehensive understanding of urban complexity, and they will also reveal proposals and solutions which help us to improve the quality of our cities; from now on.

The encounter of architecture and urbanism with parcelisation is marked with the sign of a historical debt. Parcelisation is a tremendously powerful design tool. Architecture and urban planning attest to its capacity to shape sociospatial relations across a range of scales and contexts. From Renaissance palazzi to modernist slabs, from nation-wide agrarian reforms and Haussmann’s Paris to Christopher Alexander’s new theory of urban design and Michael Webb’s Suitaloon — most of the historical revolutions and experimental projects that have shaken these fields have relied, consciously or not, on a critique and restructuration of inherited divisions of land and space. The layout of parcel patterns has a series of implications including forms of property, the divide between private and public realms, the distribution of spatial contents and uses through zoning, typological decisions and so forth. The behaviour of any urban structure depends on the tissue of plots that configures the urban fabric and many of the challenges urban design faces today —complexity, urban vitality, social equality, etc.— hinge upon the forms of land division and distribution we adopt.

From the eighth century until practically the twentieth century, the tide mills have been a source of development of the areas in which they were implanted. Across the Atlantic coast of Europe, and subsequently in America, these devices were developed and connected by its nature with the nearby ports. In these places the raw material, with its origin and destination from these ports, were processed. The emergence of other sources of energy more economic and efficient caused the gradual decline of these devices which led to the disappearance of a large number of them. In recent years, both private and public institutions, especially municipalities, have shown interest in preserving these devices as singular buildings, or as museums or "visitor centers" where the process of milling is explained and also its relationship with the region of influence. This renewed interest in the subject, coupled with the need of finding new sources of renewable energy in order to comply with the conditions of the Kyoto Treaty, has created the need for a study of the possible implementation of small hydro power in the old mills. In the present document, first we have proceeded to describe the history of the tide mills and afterwards we have located them in the Spanish provinces to identify the possible locations of energy generation. In the next step, we proceeded to identify the different types of turbines suitable to these cases, and we have been selected two of them. The first one is consolidated and the second one is in an experimental phase. With these pair of turbines we have determined and analyzed the outcome of certain financial data depending on the tidal range. The conclusions drawn from this analysis are that operating the system by the flow tide is less productive than by ebb tide. The limited height of tide in the Spanish coast considerably limits the return on investment. This outcome forces potential investors to make a very detailed analysis of each case study. Future researches in this field should be guided towards the development of a new type of mini turbine with more regulation for a higher performance, taking into account also that the basin of a tidal mill can also be an excellent test place. Furthermore, the potential energy output can be a factor to consider in a distributed generation system within a smart city.

ABSTRACT We label to reduce our uncertainty; we classify based on opposites to understand. The universe and all constructed space in particular, are explained from a dual architecture: inside - out, up - down, right - left, day - night, male - female, black - white. What differentiate us as a group, race, gender, distinguishing the lifestyles, ideologies and theories, is how we draw the relation between the opposites: between the individual and the collective, private and public, imagination and reality , identity and otherness, order and disorder, desire and satiety. The dichotomous classification of reality that modernity carried to its extreme, hurts life: the mutual exclusion of opposites eliminates the distance, the space-time between the two, which is where life is located. The dual conception that governs our knowledge has also contaminated the relationship between architect and society, being the cause of the toxic environment that surrounds the inhabitant who no longer identify himself with the places he inhabit. It may be appropriate pass from binary thinking to a logic of the interstitial which abandon duality to settle in Between; architect then will be the mediator between authorities and life, sensing the Between as a flowing of life a potency of interaction rather than a separation between the extremes; ambiguous, in –between, places are where the encounter between opposites happens, between the architect and the inhabitant, between imagination and reality, between you and me.
