Quantitative estimates of time-averaging in marine shell accumulations available to date are limited primarily to aragonitic mollusk shells. We assessed time-averaging in Holocene assemblages of calcitic brachiopod shells by direct dating of individual specimens of the terebratulid brachiopod Bouchardia rosea. The data were collected from exceptional (brachiopod-rich) shell assemblages, occurring surficially on a tropical mixed carbonate-siliciclastic shelf (the Southeast Brazilian Bight, SW Atlantic), a setting that provides a good climatic and environmental analog for many Paleozoic brachiopod shell beds of North America and Europe. A total of 82 individual brachiopod shells, collected from four shallow (5-25 m) nearshore (<2.5 km from the shore) localities, were dated by using amino acid racemization (D-alloisoleucine/L-isoleucine value) calibrated with five AMS-radiocarbon dates (r(2) = 0.933). This is the first study to demonstrate that amino acid racemization methods can provide accurate and precise ages for individual shells of calcitic brachiopods. The dated shells vary in age from modern to 3000 years, with a standard deviation of 690 years. The age distribution is strongly right-skewed: the young shells dominate the dated specimens and older shells are increasingly less common. However, the four localities display significant differences in the range of time-averaging and the form of the age distribution. The dated shells vary notably in the quality of preservation, but there is no significant correlation between taphonomic condition and age, either for individual shells or at assemblage level. These results demonstrate that fossil brachiopods may show considerable time-averaging, but the scale and nature of that mixing may vary greatly among sites. Moreover, taphonomic condition is not a reliable indicator of pre-burial history of individual brachiopod shells or the scale of temporal mixing within the entire assemblage. The results obtained for brachiopods are strikingly similar to results previously documented for mollusks and suggest that differences in mineralogy and shell microstructure are unlikely to be the primary factors controlling the nature and scale of time-averaging. Environmental factors and local fluctuations in populations of shell-producing organisms are more likely to be the principal determinants of time-averaging in marine benthic shelly assemblages. The long-term survival of brachiopod shells is incongruent with the rapid shell destruction observed in taphonomic experiments. The results support the taphonomic model that shells remain protected below (but perhaps near) the surface through their early taphonomic history. They may be brought back up to the surface intermittently by bioturbation and physical reworking, but only for short periods of time. This model explains the striking similarities in time-averaging among different types of organisms and the lack of correlation between time-since-death and shell taphonomy.

Litter production was measured for two years (november 1986 to october 1988) in a 29 year -old Pinus elliottii var. elliottii stand in differents resin treatments. Needle production comprised 9 to 93% of total litter fall, while the other categories (branches, barks, seeds and cones) were not significant. Maximum litterfall occurred in march to may 1987 (autumn) and the minimum was in august 1988 (winter) for all treatments and the control. No relationship appeared between annual litterfall and environmental factors, although there was a tendence to exhibit two periods of production: one in summer and other in winter. The results showed that in two years of resin extraction was not sufficient in interfering the litter fall and consequently the productivity.

This study focuses on the seasonal presence of acicular crystals in the cambial zone of Citharexylum myrianthum Chain. (Verbenaceae). Specimens collected in different months from 1996 to 2000 were examined for the abundance of acicular crystals in the cambium. This information was correlated with the phenology of the species and the climate of the region. Acicular calcium oxalate crystals were found in cambial fusiform and ray cell initials, as well as in their daughter cells. An abundance of crystals was observed during periods of water deficit and leaf fall (July). Fewer crystals were found in the beginning of the wet season and bud swelling (September). When trees were flowering and the soil was wet (November and December), acicular crystals were rarely observed. During this period, acicular crystals were found in differentiating phloem and xylem parenchyma cells, in fully differentiated phloem cells, but not in fully differentiated xylem cells.

In this paper, we have investigated a region of direct stable orbits around the Moon, whose stability is related to the H2 Family of periodic orbits and to the quasi-periodic orbits that oscillate around them. The stability criteria adopted was that the path did not escape from the Moon during an integration period of 1000 days (remaining with negative two-body Moon-probe orbital energy during this period). Considering the three-dimensional four-body Sun-Earth-Moon-probe problem, we investigated the evolution of the size of the stability region, taking into account the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit, the eccentricity and inclination of the Moon's orbit, and the solar radiation pressure on the probe. We also investigated the evolution of the region's size and its location by varying the inclination of the probe's initial osculating orbit relative to the Moon's orbital plane between 0 degrees and 180 degrees. The size of the stability region diminishes; nevertheless, it remains significant for 0 <= i <= 25 degrees and 35 degrees <= i <= 45 degrees. The orbits of this region could be useful for missions by space vehicles that must remain in orbit around the Moon for periods of up to 1000 days, requiring low maintenance costs. (c) 2005 COSPAR. The compensatory changes of carbohydrate metabolism induced by fasting were investigated in frugivorous bats, Artibeus lituratus and Artibeus jamaicensis. For this purpose, plasma levels of glucose and lactate, liver and muscle glycogen content, rates of liver gluconeogenesis and the activity of related enzymes were determined in male bats. After a decrease during the first 48 h of fasting, plasma glucose levels remained constant until the end of the experimental period. Plasma lactate levels, extremely high in fed bats, decreased after 48 h of fasting. Similarly, liver glycogen content, markedly high in fed animals, was reduced to low levels after 24 h without food. Muscle glycogen was also reduced in fasted bats. The expected increase in liver gluconeogenesis during fasting was observed after 48 h of fasting. The activities of liver glucose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase were not affected by food withdrawn. on the other hand, fasting for 24 h induced an increase in the activity of liver cytosolic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. The data indicate that liver gluconeogenesis has an important role in the glucose homeostasis in frugivorous bats during prolonged periods of food deprivation. During short periods of fasting liver glycogenolysis seems to be the main responsible for the maintenance of glycemia. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The aim of the present study was to assess the heat tolerance of animals of two Portuguese (Alentejana and Mertolenga) and two exotic (Frisian and Limousine) cattle breeds, through the monitoring of physiological acclimatization reactions in different thermal situations characterized by alternate periods of thermoneutrality and heat stress simulated in climatic chambers. In the experiment, six heifers of the Alentejana, Frisian and Mertolenga breeds and four heifers of the Limousine breed were used. The increase in chamber temperatures had different consequences on the animals of each breed. When submitted to heat stress, the Frisian animals developed high thermal polypnea (more than 105 breath movements per minute), which did not prevent an increase in the rectal temperature (from 38.7 degrees C to 40.0 degrees C). However, only a slight depression in food intake and in blood thyroid hormone concentrations was observed under thermal stressful conditions. Under the thermal stressful conditions, Limousine animals decreased food intake by 11.4% and blood triiodothyronine (T3) hormone concentration decreased to 76% of the level observed in thermoneutral conditions. Alentejana animals had similar reactions. The Mertolenga cattle exhibited the highest capacity for maintaining homeothermy: under heat stressful conditions, the mean thermal polypnea increased twofold, but mean rectal temperature did not increase. Mean food intake decreased by only 2% and mean T3 blood concentration was lowered to 85,6% of the concentration observed under thermoneutral conditions. These results lead to the conclusion that the Frisian animals had more difficulty in tolerating high temperatures, the Limousine and Alentejana ones had an intermediate difficulty, and the Mertolenga animals were by far the most heat tolerant.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of macrophage activity and antibody production in experimental infection with Leptospira Pomona in mice genetically selected for high (H) or low (L) humoral immune response. To evaluate macrophage activity, reactive oxygen and nitrogen intermediates were determined. Also, the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and the recovery of Leptospira-specific antibodies in the kidneys and liver were assessed; histological lesions were analyzed using the hematoxylin-eosin technique, and Leptospira antigens in tissues were determined by immunohistochemistry. Results showed that recovery of microorganisms from the analyzed organs was lower in LIV-A mice. However, HIV-A animals showed total restraint since the 14th day after infection, whereas LIV-A mice still had bacteria in the liver at the 21st post-infection day. Immune response against Pomona serovar in those lineages was characterized as high production of antibodies, mainly in late periods of the infectious process. The production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen intermediates also contributed to the elimination of Leptospira Pomona in all two lineages; H2O2 production was an important factor in HIV-A mice, as well as NO production in the LIV-A animals, mainly at the latest post-inoculation periods. The same occurred regarding TNF-alpha production. Severe renal lesions were observed at periods in which larger numbers of leptospires were isolated using the culture technique. Tissue alterations persisted in LIV-A mice, even at periods in which leptospires were not recovered. Immunohistochemistry showed to be more sensitive than culturing. However, both techniques were appropriate for the agent identification in the studied lineages. Results suggest that such lineages could represent an important model to investigate pathogenesis and immune response against the varied serovars of leptospires.

In the present study morphological changes occurring in the neuromuscular junctions (NMJ) of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus muscles from albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) submitted to experimental chronic alcoholism were evaluated. Seventy two male animals aged 4 months and weighing on average 400 g were divided into three groups: control, alcoholic and isocaloric. Six rats from each group were anesthetized and sacrificed after 5, 10, 15 and 18 months. The NMJ did not show detectable morphological changes in either muscle after treatment when examined by light microscopy. With respect to the dimensions, statistical analysis demonstrated a tendency to a statistically significant treatment x time interaction for the length of soleus muscle NMJ. The ultrastructural study, however, revealed that the NMJ of the soleus muscle of animals submitted to 18 months of experimental alcoholism presented important morphological alterations. Characteristically, the NMJ of these muscles is located on an elevation on the surface of the muscle fiber, presenting a regular round, oval or elliptical shape and continuous and not very deep synaptic grooves. Approximately 30% of the NMJ of alcoholic rats are irregular in shape, with the sarcolemmal elevations typical of the synapse region being flattened on at least one side, with discontinuous synaptic grooves, and deep and punctiform contacts of the synaptic buds. These data suggest that, although skeletal muscle has a greater natural resistance against the direct or indirect effects of alcohol, some submicroscopic morphological alterations are detectable in the NMJ, especially in muscles with oxidative metabolism (soleus) following long periods of ingestion of alcohol. ContentsThe objective of this study is to evaluate the reproductive efficiency in donors and recipient Mangalarga Marchador mares in commercial programmes of embryo transfer (ET) and the effects of some reproductive characteristics and ET methodology on conception rates in the recipient mares. A total of 1140 flushing procedures were performed and 830 embryos (72.8%) were recovered. There were no differences between the rates of embryonic recovery in the different breeding seasons (p > 0.05) and 92.8% of the recovered embryos were 8-9 days old. There was no difference in the embryonic recovery regarding the collection order from the first to the ninth embryo collection along the breeding season, as well as among mares inseminated during the foal heat or subsequent cycles (p > 0.05). Pregnancy rates observed in the total period of all reproductive seasons at 15, 30, 45 and 60 days of pregnancy were 73.4, 69.9, 66.7 and 64.5%, respectively. Differences in pregnancy rate and early embryonic loss rates were not observed between embryos transferred immediately after collection (66.8% and 13.5%) and embryos transported at room temperature for periods of < 1 h (62.9% and 14.4%; p > 0.05). Pregnancy rates were higher when the interval between ovulations of donor and recipient mares remained between -3 and -2 days (p < 0.05), and the lowest rates were observed for intervals of -6 days (p < 0.05) with intermediary values for intervals of -1, 0 and +1 (p > 0.05). Embryonic loss rates, however, did not differ between intervals of ovulation's synchronism between donor and recipient mares (p > 0.05). This flexibilization in the ovulatory synchronism between donor and recipient mares optimizes the use of recipient mares, thus reducing costs and facilitating management of horse breeding farms.

Transparent oxyfluoride glasses and beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals containing glass-ceramics were prepared with varying Eu(3+) content (0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6%). The effect of Eu(3+) content on the preparation of glass-ceramics was investigated. From differential scanning calorimetry, the T(x)-T(g)(T(x)-temperature of the onset of crystallization; T(g)-glass transition temperature) parameter for glasses has shown slight variation, and an exothermic peak near T(g) called the ceramization temperature (T(c)) has been observed. Heat treatments were performed at this temperature to obtain transparent glass-ceramics containing beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals, identified by x-ray diffraction. Heat treatments for different periods of time were performed and were observed to be very important in the control of the crystal size and of the crystallization rate. Based upon the absorption spectra, the scattering level due to the presence of beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals in the glass-ceramics was observed to be similar to that for the mother glasses. Detailed analysis of emission spectra and decay time measurements led to the identification of Eu(3+) ions as the beta-PbF(2) crystalline phase. Excitation spectra at 70 K show the interaction of Eu(3+) ions with the fluorogermanate network.

Abundance and ecological distribution of the rock shrimp Sicyonia dorsalis from the northern coast of São Paulo State (Brazil) was investigated during a two-year period (July 2001 to June 2003). Monthly collections were conducted in the Ubatuba (UBA) and Caraguatatuba (CA) regions, using a commercial shrimp boat equipped with double-rig nets. In each region, seven depths were delimited (5 m to 35 m). A total of 1,752 and 1,894 shrimp were obtained at UBA and CA, respectively. The distribution of S. dorsalis differed among depths, years, and seasons. Highest abundance values were recorded in depths where silt and clay comprised more than 70% of the sediment. The majority (89%) of captured specimens were caught in the first year, in periods of lower mean temperature, mainly in the spring of 2001, when the intrusion of cold South Atlantic Central Waters (SACW) was more intense. In such period, the differences in the abundance of shrimps in each region (UBA = 1,118 and CA = 493) suggested that S. dorsalis migrated to the north (UBA), during the SACW intrusion. Thus, sediment type and water temperature are among the most important variables affecting the bathymetric distribution of S. dorsalis in these regions.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of incorporation of neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves into the soil for controlling bacterial wilt of tomato caused by Ralstonia solanacearum. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse of the State University of Maranhao (Brazil). Dry and fresh neem leaves were incorporated in the soil in different amounts (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 g) and kept in it for different periods of time (0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days). After each of these periods, seedlings inoculated with R. solanacearum were transplanted in the amended soil. Results showed positive effects in the disease control by incorporating neem leaves, with a reduction of wilting symptoms up to 100% with dry leaves and 78% with fresh leaves.
