Reactions of Titanocene Bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene Complexes with Carbodiimides: An Experimental and Theoretical Study of Complexation versus C-N Bond Activation

The reaction of the low valent metallocene(II) sources Cp'Ti-2(eta(2)-Me3SiC2SiMe3) (Cp' = eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl, 1a or eta(5)-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, 1b) with different carbodiimide substrates RN=C=NR' 2-R-R' (R = t-Bu; R' = Et; R = R' = i-Pr; t-Bu; SiMe3; 2,4,6-Me-C6H2 and 2,6-i-Pr-C6H3) was investigated to explore the frontiers of ring strained, unusual four-membered heterometallacycles 5-R. The product complexes show dismantlement, isomerization, or C-C coupling of the applied carbodiimide substrates, respectively, to form unusual mono-, di-, and tetranuclear titanium(III) complexes. A detailed theoretical study revealed that the formation of the unusual complexes can be attributed to the biradicaloid nature of the unusual four-membered heterometallacycles 5-R, which presents an intriguing situation of M-C bonding. The combined experimental and theoretical study highlights the delicate interplay of electronic and steric effects in the stabilization of strained four-membered heterometallacycles, accounting for the isolation of the obtained complexes.

A Novel C-Terminal Homologue of Aha1 Co-Chaperone Binds to Heat Shock Protein 90 and Stimulates Its ATPase Activity in Entamoeba histolytica

Cytosolic heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) has been shown to be essential for many infectious pathogens and is considered a potential target for drug development. In this study, we have carried out biochemical characterization of Hsp90 from a poorly studied protozoan parasite of clinical importance, Entamoeba histolytica. We have shown that Entamoeba Hsp90 can bind to both ATP and its pharmacological inhibitor, 17-AAG (17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin), with K-d values of 365.2 and 10.77 mu M, respectively, and it has a weak ATPase activity with a catalytic efficiency of 4.12 x 10(-4) min(-1) mu M-1. Using inhibitor 17-AAG, we have shown dependence of Entamoeba on Hsp90 for its growth and survival. Hsp90 function is regulated by various co-chaperones. Previous studies suggest a lack of several important co-chaperones in E. histolytica. In this study, we describe the presence of a novel homologue of co-chaperone Aha1 (activator of Hsp90 ATPase), EhAha1c, lacking a canonical Aha1 N-terminal domain. We also show that EhAha1c is capable of binding and stimulating ATPase activity of EhHsp90. In addition to highlighting the potential of Hsp90 inhibitors as drugs against amoebiasis, our study highlights the importance of E. histolytica in understanding the evolution of Hsp90 and its co-chaperone repertoire. Dense network of O-H ... O and C-H ... O interactions in the solid state structure of n-pentyl-2-chloro-2-deoxy-alpha-D-manno-sept 3-uloside

Single crystal X-ray structural analysis of a septanoside, namely, n-pentyl-2-chloro-2-deoxy sept-3-uloside (1) provides many finer details of the molecular structure, in addition to its preferred twist-chair conformation, namely, (TC3,4)-T-5,6 conformation. Structural analysis reveals a dense network of O-H...O, C-H...O and van der Waals interactions that stabilize interdigitized, planar bi-layer structure of the crystal lattice. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. On linear series and a conjecture of D. C. Butler

Let C be a smooth irreducible projective curve of genus g and L a line bundle of degree d generated by a linear subspace V of H-0 (L) of dimension n+1. We prove a conjecture of D. C. Butler on the semistability of the kernel of the evaluation map V circle times O-C -> L and obtain new results on the stability of this kernel. The natural context for this problem is the theory of coherent systems on curves and our techniques involve wall crossing formulae in this theory.

Contrasting Electronic Requirements for C-H Binding and C-H Activation in d(6) Half-Sandwich Complexes of Rhenium and Tungsten

A computational study of the interaction half-sandwich metal fragments (metal=Re/W, electron count=d(6)), containing linear nitrosyl (NO+), carbon monoxide (CO), trifluorophosphine (PF3), N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with alkanes are conducted using density functional theory employing the hybrid meta-GGA functional (M06). Electron deficiency on the metal increases with the ligand in the order NHC < CO < PF3 < NO+. Electron-withdrawing ligands like NO+ lead to more stable alkane complexes than NHC, a strong electron donor. Energy decomposition analysis shows that stabilization is due to orbital interaction involving charge transfer from the alkane to the metal. Reactivity and dynamics of the alkane fragment are facilitated by electron donors on the metal. These results match most of the experimental results known for CO and PF3 complexes. The study suggests activation of alkane in metal complexes to be facile with strong donor ligands like NHC. (C) 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A comparative phase 1 clinical trial to identify anti-infective mechanisms of vitamin D in people with HIV infection

Objectives:To determine if there is a biological mechanism that explains the association between HIV disease progression and increased mortality with low circulating vitamin D levels; specifically, to determine if restoring vitamin D levels induced T-cell functional changes important for antiviral immunity.Design:This was a pilot, open-label, three-arm prospective phase 1 study.Methods:We recruited 28 patients with low plasma vitamin D (<50nmol/l 25-hydroxyvitamin D3), comprising 17 HIV+ patients (11 on HAART, six treatment-naive) and 11 healthy controls, who received a single dose of 200000IU oral cholecalciferol. Advanced T-cell flow cytometry methods measured CD4(+) T-cell function associated with viral control in blood samples at baseline and 1-month after vitamin D supplementation.Results:One month of vitamin D supplementation restored plasma levels to sufficiency (>75nmol/l) in 27 of 28 patients, with no safety issues. The most striking change was in HIV+ HAART+ patients, where increased frequencies of antigen-specific T cells expressing macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1 - an important anti-HIV blocking chemokine - were observed, with a concomitant increase in plasma MIP-1, both of which correlated significantly with vitamin D levels. In addition, plasma cathelicidin - a vitamin D response gene with broad antimicrobial activity - was enhanced.Conclusion:Vitamin D supplementation modulates disease-relevant T-cell functions in HIV-infected patients, and may represent a useful adjunct to HAART therapy. Introducción: La presente Sentencia contempla la nulidad de un matrimonio en que las partes tuvieron un noviazgo de más de cuatro años y una convivencia matrimonial de dos años y medio, en la que no hubo hijos. La separación de las partes definitiva tuvo lugar porque el convenido era incapaz de instalar una vida verdaderamente conyugal. Se me solicita un comentario a esta Sentencia, publicada en su texto original latino y en su traducción castellana, cuando ya existe un breve, pero medular y excelente comentario del Revdo. Mons. Dr. Alejandro W. Bunge, Juez de la Rota, publicado en el libro “Pius et Prudens”, con el título de “Una Sentencia integradora”1. Además, el indicado comentario, se encuentra en el contexto de un generoso elogio a la persona de quien suscribe por la preocupación acerca de la indebida omnipresencia de las causas psíquicas de nulidad matrimonial en los Tribunales eclesiásticos, cuando muchas veces es más ajustada a la verdad y se deberían tener en cuenta, las causas éticas, concretamente las exclusiones de algunos de los fines o de las propiedades esenciales del matrimonio que tiene lugar por parte de los cónyuges...

High Aspect Ratio (L/D) Riser Viv Prediction Using Wake Oscillator Model

A two-dimensional (2-D) vortex-induced vibration (VIV) prediction model for high aspect ratio (LID) riser subjected to uniform and sheared flow is studied in this paper. The nonlinear structure equations are considered. The near wake dynamics describing the fluctuating nature of vortex shedding is modeled using classical van der Pol equation. A new approach was applied to calibrate the empirical parameters in the wake oscillator model. Compared the predicted results with the experimental data and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) results. Good agreements are observed. It can be concluded that the present model can be used as simple computational tool in predicting some aspects of VIV of long flexible structures. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Un testigo directo de las tensiones religiosas en la Alejandría de los siglos IV y V D.C. : Páladas de Alejandría en la Antología Palatina

Abstract: Although he is the most prolific writer of the Greek Anthology, Palladas’ life is almost unknown. But, in spite of the limited biographical data, his work has fortunately been preserved in the GA. Because of his literary creation, the old times rewarded him with the nickname Μετέωρος, high, since the literary merits of a hundred poems of his authorship was recognized (others are discussed by critics). A dozen of them contains invaluable information about the political, religious and social situation in Alexandria immediately after the victory of the bishop Theophilus, Cyril’s predecessor and uncle, during the conflict between Christians and Gentiles, each sector backed up by an Alexandrian population segment (cfr. 9.528, 10.82, 10.85) . Resigned at times, constantly demanding, Palladas complains about the decline of the belief professed by him due to the increasing penetration of the new faith. Therefore, four epigrams record the conversion of the temple of Tyche into a tavern (9.180-183) and 10.90 seems to attack the doctrine of the Resurrection. When religion and politics go hand-in-hand, when religious conspiracies link up with palace intrigues, consequences are predictable: a man called Doroteo denounced him for his negative response to the new dogma, which caused him the loss of his teacher paid work. His annoyance was even greater with further sufferings, chiefly economic, and he had to sell his books (9.171 and 9.175) among other desperate decisions Forewarned about his radical bitterness against Church, it is just to make clear that he is not fully acquiescent with ancient gods and heroes. Thus, in 5.257 he questions Zeus’ ars amandi, in 9.377 refutes Tantalus’ possibility of thirst and hunger in Hades and 9.773 mischievously points out that Eros has been changed into a pan. The work begins with the selection, personal translation and comprehensive analysis of twenty two epigrams. Through such philological aid, we attempt to verify the frictions and the main perceptible factors in his poetic creation to justify his worldview, according to the pagan sentiment widespread in that time before the twilight already overwhelming of its ailing traditions

Parasitoides de huevos de Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: noctuidae) Dalbulus maidis (Delong y wolcott) (Homoptera: cicadellidae) y Peregrinus maidis (Ashm) (Homoptera: delphacidae) en maíz (Zea mays)

Durante la época seca bajo riego y la época lluviosa de 1988 se llevó a cabo un sondeo de los parasitoides de huevos de spodoptera frugiperda en maíz, en el centro nacional de investigación de granos básicos “Humberto tapia” (depto. De Managua) y en la estación experimental “Raúl González” del valle de sebaco (depto. de Matagalpa). También se hizo una evaluación de la presencia de telenomus remus en alguno de los sitios de liberación de estas especies en el año 1976. En la calera (depto. De Managua), la trinidad (depto. De Estelí), valle de sebaco (depto. De Matagalpa) y camoapa (depto. De Boaco); en 1984 en la cartonera y santa clara (depto. De león). Durante el ciclo de postrera del año 1988 se llevó a cabo un sondeo de los parasitoides de huevos de dalbulus maidis y peregrinus maidis en el centro experimental “ Humberto tapia”, y en una finca en el km 93 y 98 de la carretera león- Chinandega, km 40 de la carretera Managua-león y en san juan de la concepción (depto. De Masaya). En la estación experimental “Humberto tapia” no se encontraron parasitoides de huevos ni parasitoides ovo-larvales de s. frugiperda. en la “Raúl González” tampoco se encontraron parasitoides de huevos sensuestricto de s. frugiperda, pero se detectó la presencia de parasitoide ovo-larval, chelonus insularis en las dos épocas de siembra se comprobó que en el estado fenológico de la planta durante las dos épocas ni la época de siembra influyeron significativamente sobre la tasa de parasitismo de c. insularis dentro y entre las masas de huevos de s. frugiperda ya no se encontró diferencias significativa en el porcentaje de masas de huevos parasitadas 27 días después de germinación (DDG) (45%) y 55 DDG (50%) en la época seca, ni en la lluviosa 26 DDG (20%), 43 DDG (29%) y 57DDG (0%). Tampoco hubo efecto de la época de siembra (seca, 47% y lluviosa, 19%) sobre el porcentaje de masas de huevos parasitadas. En el porcentaje promedio de huevos por masa parasitados a los 27 DDG (19%) y 55 DDG (8%) durante la época seca y la lluviosa 26 DDG (18%), 43 DDG (9%) y 57 DDG (0%) tampoco se encontró una diferencia significativa. La época (seca 17% y la lluviosa 19%) tampoco influyo sobre el porcentaje promedio de huevos por masas parasitadas. La edad de la masa de huevos de s. frugiperda (5-6 días de edad, 33.33. % y 3-4 días de edad 12.12%) influyo significativamente sobre el porcentaje de masas de huevos parasitadas por c.insulularis el cual afecto las poblaciones de s. frugiperda en la época seca y lluviosa en un 8.35 % y 5.32% respectivamente. Los anteriores resultados más el no aparente establecimiento aparente de t.remus en los sitio donde fue liberado, permiten recomendar la introducción nuevamente de raza especifica de este parasitoide para nuestra condiciones de clima, debiéndose realizar las liberaciones preferiblemente en sitio montañosos y de clima fresco. La presencia de parasitoides de D. maidis fue nula. Las cuatro especies parasíticas de huevos de p.maidis encontradas en esta investigación (anagrus spp, gonatocerus spp, paracentrobia spp y oligosita oophagus), se consideran como un nuevo hallazgo para Nicaragua. Estos resultados insinúan la necesidad de conocer los periodo crítico de infestación de d. maidis en el maíz , para realizar aplicaciones mínima de insecticida con el fin de controlarlo sin afectar las poblaciones de benéficos que atacan a p.maidis, evitando así que este insecto se convierta en una plaga peligrosa para el cultivo de maíz.

Efecto de la edad de destete y del sistema de alimentación sobre el crecimiento en terneras de lechería

Se efectuó una prueba de alimentación usando el diseño de parcela dividida con un arreglo completamente al azar, con 36 terneras provenientes del cruce Holstein y Pardo Suizo, para comparar el efecto de dos edades de destete 4 y 8 semanas, y tres sistemas de alimentación en el crecimiento de terneras de lecheria. Los tratamientos fueron los siguientes: a) leche integra suministrada en forma gradual y el destete a las 4 semanas; b) leche integra suministrada en forma constante y el destete a las 4 semanas; c) sustituto de leche por 4 semanas; d, e y f, similares a los tratamientos anteriores en lo referente al alimento liquido pero con destete a las 8 semanas. El resto de la racion consistio en alimentos concentrados; iniciador, desarrollo y heno. Desde las 9 a las 20 semanas las terneras pasaron en grupos de seis a corrales comunes. El iniciador suministrado a las terneras de los tratamientos a y d se ofreció a razón de 144 gr. por litro de leche integra, previa disolución en agua, y el iniciador que consumieron las terneras de los tratamientos c y f se administro a razón de 0.90 kg hasta el destete. El concentrado de desarrollo se ofreció a los tratamientos a, b, d y a donde la 1 a las 20 semanas y en los tratamientos c y f después del destete hasta alcanzar un máximo de 2.7 kg. Todos los tratamientos tuvieron a disposición a partir del destete heno de estrella (Cynodon sp). La ganancia de peso vivo promedio total, de 66.48 kg obtenida por las terneras del tratamiento e, fue similar a las de 56.84, 50.74, 53.72 y 55.53 kg logradas por las terneras de los tratamientos b, c,d y f, pero significativamente diferente (P<0.05), a 43.42 kg alcanzada por las terneras del tratamiento a. El promedio de ganancias de peso vivo por día desde la 1 hasta las 20 semanas de edad fue 0.31, 0.41, 0.36, 0.38, 0.47 y 0.40 kg para los tratamientos a al f respectivamente. La mayor ganancia promedio en altura a la cruz 20.32 cm lograda por las terneras del tratamiento II fue similar a la de 17.97 cm obtenida por las terneras del tratamiento III, pero significativamente diferentes (P<0.01), con la de 15.94 cm alcanzada por las terneras del sistema I. El promedio de ganancia en perímetro toraxico fue 22.23, 27.30, 26.29, 26.29, 30.35 y 26.29 cm para los tratamientos a al f respectivamente. Estas ganancias no fueron significativas (P<0.05). Los costos totales de alimentación por ternera desde la 1 hasta las 20 semanas fueron 245.98, 315.74, 283.41, 318.41, 457.48 y 335.33 córdobas para los tratamientos a al f respectivamente. Los costos correspondientes por kg de aumento en peso vivo, fueron 5.67, 5.55, 5.59, 5.93, 6.88 y 6.04 respectivamente.
