West Bengal holds an important position in fisheries development as the state has all types of captive, culture freshwater and brackish water fisheries. A survey of forest areas of Sundarbans indicates the total annual catch to be 2500 metric tonnes. On average 4,000 persons are engaged in daily fishing with 1.5 kilogrammes of fish catch per fisherman per day and during the 6 months from September to February on an average 6,000 persons are engaged in fishing. About 70% of total catch of fish is collected during this period. Statistical analysis of the data collected for the study has clearly indicated that a rational and scientific exploitation of fish species inhabiting the rivers and creeks of Sundarbans estuary has immense economic potentialities.

An account is given of the different types of gears and craft used to catch the pelagic and demersal fish in the inshore and estuary waters of Karwar, India. The main types of craft used during the fishing season September-May are: rampani boats, yendi boats, out-rigger boats, plank-built and dug-out canoes; important gears include: rampani, yendi, shore-seines, gill nets, boat seines, drift nets and hook and lines. Mechanized fishing, introduced during the sixties and seventies, included trawling and purse-seining. The types of gears used by the traditional fishermen depend on local conditions, seasons and distance covered from the shore. The major share to the total landings of fish in Karwar coast is brought mainly by the mechanized craft.

Unknown larval stages of Tylosurus strongylurus and Sphyraena jello have been traced from Vellar Estuary, Porto Novo (lat. 11 degree 29'N; long. 79 degree 46' E). Descriptions of different stages (7-17.5 mm T. strongylurus, and 18 and 22.5 mm S. jello) are given. A thorough ichthyoplankton survey for 2 years (Nov. 1977-Oct. 1979) in the estuary revealed that these larvae were very rare in the estuary and were caught on the occasion (Nov. 1978) only.

The early embryonic and larval stages of Opisthopterus tardoore are described and discussed. The developing 3 eggs of stages up to 21hrs after collection and larvae up to 118hrs after hatching were reared in the laboratory. Seasonal occurrence of the eggs in the Vellar estuary, Porto Novo (lat. 11 29'N; 79 degree 46'E) was recorded for a period of 2 years (Nov. 1977 to Oct. 1979). Variation in myotomic counts in the larvae is critically reviewed with earlier works.

The hydrographic conditions prevailing in an estuarine system along the southwest coast of India are described. The nature of destruction of timber in these backwaters has been examined in detail which revealed the existence of 8 species of shipworms, 2 species each of pholads and isopods. The shipworms are represented by Dicyathifer manni, Lyrodus pedicellatus, Teredo furcifera, T. clappi, Nausitora dunlopei, Bankia carinata, B. campanellata; the pholads by Martesia striata and M. (Purticoma) nairi; and the isopods by Sphaeroma terebrans and S. annandalei. The incidence and relative abundance of these pests are discussed in relation to the salinity profile of the estuary.
