Recent electrophysiological studies have suggested that there is a subpopulation of cells in lymphatic vessels which act as pacemakers controlling the characteristic spontaneous contractile activity in this tissue. In this study, electron microscopy and immunohistochemical techniques were used on sheep mesenteric lymphatic vessels to investigate the morphology of the cells comprising the lymphatic wall. The smooth muscle cells were not orientated in circular and longitudinal layers as is seen in the gastrointestinal tract, but were arranged in bundles which interlock and cross over in a basket-weave fashion. Antibodies to Kit and vimentin, which are widely used to label specialised pacemaking cells in the gastrointestinal tract (known as interstitial cells of Cajal), demonstrated the existence of an axially orientated subpopulation of cells lying between the endothelium and the bulk of the smooth muscle. Examination of this area using electron microscopy showed cells which were electron dense compared to the underlying smooth muscle and contained caveolae, Golgi complexes, mitochondria, 10-nm filaments, a well-developed endoplasmic reticulum and a basal lamina. The smooth muscle cells typically contained caveolae, dense bodies, mitochondria, abundant filaments, sER and basal laminae. Cells dispersed for patch-clamp studies were also stained for vimentin and myosin. Myosin-staining cells had the typical spindle appearance of smooth muscle cells whereas the vimentin-positive cells could either be branched or more closely resemble the smooth muscle cells. The present study provides the first morphological evidence that specialised cells exist within the vascular system which have the ultrastructural characteristics of pacemaker cells in other tissues and are vimentin and Kit positive.

We report results for e(+/-)-Ps(Is) scattering in the energy range up to 80 eV calculated in 9-state and 30-state coupled pseudostate approximations. Cross-sections are presented for elastic scattering, ortho-para conversion, discrete excitation, ionization and total scattering. Resonances associated with the Ps(n = 2) threshold are also examined and their positions and widths determined. Very good agreement is obtained with the variational calculations of Ward et al. [J. The unique characteristics of credit unions reduces the information asymmetry that is prevalent in credit making decisions, enabling them to provide loans where other financial institutions cannot. This makes them a potential tool in the fight against financial exclusion. Yet, the UK credit union movement is not regarded as being successful, even though there is evidence of much financial exclusion. This study is cross sectional in form, and evaluates characteristics that may contribute to the success of the UK credit union movement at national and regional level, in 2000. The findings are used to consider the impact of recent regulatory changes on the movement. The key findings are that there is a significant relationship between the success of a credit union, its size and the deprivation of the ward from which it sources its members. More specifically, larger credit unions and those located in more affluent wards, are more successful. Affiliation to the Irish League of Credit Unions and having a common bond of occupation, are also found to be contributing factors to credit union success. These results are taken as providing support for the recent changes implemented by the Financial Services Authority (FSA), which is likely to result in the emergence of larger credit unions (through mergers), run by appropriately qualified persons, serving a more mixed-income membership base. It is, however, noted that the history of the UK movement is one of missed opportunities and only time will tell whether credit unions have the wherewithal to accept current opportunities.
A model for developing, implementing and evaluating a strategy to improve nursing and midwifery care

Background: Health care organizations world wide are faced with the need to develop and implement strategic organizational plans to meet the challenges of modern health care. There is a need for models for developing, implementing and evaluating strategic plans that engage practitioners, and make a measurable difference to the patients that they serve. This article describes the development of such a model to underpin a strategy for nursing and midwifery in an acute hospital trust. An integrated model: The processes for strategy development (values clarification, critical companionship and focus groups) are discussed, together with the development of processes for implementation, based upon a modification of the PARIHS (Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services) conceptual framework. Finally, the methods for evaluating the strategy (a pre-test/post-test approach measuring the quality of nursing care, the degree to which the organization supports professional nursing care, the leadership styles of ward managers, and patient satisfaction with care) are described. Conclusion: The model is offered as one that may be of use to others who wish to develop an integrated approach to strategic change; an approach in which the development, implementation and evaluation of strategic plans are informed by the core values of nurses and midwives.

Cooperatives, as a kind of firms, are considered by many scholars as an remarkable alternative for overcoming the economic crisis started in 2008. Besides, there are other scholars which pointed out the important role that these firms play in the regional economic development. Nevertheless, when one examines the economic literature on cooperatives, it is detected that this kind of firms is mainly studied starting from the point of view of their own characteristics and particularities of participation and solidarity. In this sense, following a different analysis framework, this article proposes a theoretical model in order to explain the behavior of cooperatives based on the entrepreneurship theory with the aim of increasing the knowledge about this kind of firms and, more specifically, their contribution to regional economic development.

In this paper the claim for the market for a new business management to ensure the presence of women in decision -making to respond to new social needs addressed. Thus, this paper analyzes the influence of gender diversity of the directors on the profitability and the level of debt for a sample of 5,199 Spanish cooperatives. Unlike capitalist societies, these organizations have a number of peculiarities in their government, and that the partners are themselves major time, agents and customers. The study focuses on the Spanish context, where there is an open debate on the importance of women's business management, as in other countries, driven by the proliferation of legislation on gender equality, being, in addition, Spain, the pioneer in having specific legislation on Social Economy. The results show that cooperatives with greater female representation in theirs Boards have higher profitability. On the other hand, those Boards with a higher percentage of women show a lower level of indebtedness.

Cooperatives have a long historical experience in the Spanish economy and have demonstrated their ability to compete against traditional firms in the market. To maintain this capability, while taking advantage of the competitive advantages associated with their idiosyncrasies as social economy enterprises, they should take into consideration that the economy is increasingly globalized and increasingly knowledge-based, especially with regards to technological content. As a consequence, the innovative capacity appears to be a key aspect in order to be able to challenge competitors. This article characterizes the innovative behavior of cooperatives in the region of Castile and Leon and analyses the internal and external factors affecting their innovative performance, based on data from a survey of 581 cooperatives. The results of the empirical analysis, which is performed by multivariate binary logistic regression on various types of innovation, lead us to identify the size of the organizations, the existence of planning, the R & D activities and the human capital as the main determining factors.
