Within the framework of scattering integral equations in momentum space, we present numerical results of scattering of three identical bosons at low energies in two dimensions for short-range separable potentials. An analysis of the present numerical results reveals the three-particle scattering observables to be independent of potential shape provided the low-energy two-particle binding energy and scattering length are held fixed throughout the investigation. We think that the present conclusion of model independence will be valid for any potential, local or nonlocal, whose range is much smaller than the size of the two-particle bound state.

We have measured the effect of an applied magnetic field on the current through thin films of two different organic conjugated polymers that have previously shown to exhibit magnetoresistance, poly(9,9-dioctyl-1,4-fluorenylenevinylene) and poly(9,9-dioctyl-2,7-fluorenylenevinylene). The results show that the magnetic field releases trapped charges from inside the material and enhances the current. We have also performed optical absorption experiments on these polymer films under applied voltage and magnetic field. The results show that the magnetic field produces a change in the optical absorption in the low-energy range associated with deep traps and only under conditions when these traps are likely charged. These two results provide a strong case for the release of trapped charges caused by the magnetic field as being the cause of the magneto resistance in these polymers and possibly in other organic materials where magnetoresistance was recently observed. Fast transient current decay was recorded on POMA samples during current pulses (in the order of milliseconds) provided by a low energy electron beam under an applied field. The characteristic time decay depends on the electron beam energy and on the bias polarity. The results were explained taking into account the effect of space charge, the intrinsic conductivity of the non-irradiated region of the sample and the radiation-induced conductivity of the thin irradiated region. Fitting parameters may provide the value of both intrinsic and radiation-induced conductivities and the average electron range.

A histological study on the healing of extraction wounds following laser irradiation using a He-Ne laser, was carried out in rats. The results suggest that this mode of treatment has a beneficial effect on initial bony wound healing. Proliferation of fibroblasts and formation of trabecular osteoid tissue were found to be more prominent within the irradiated group. The deposition of led in the newly formed bone suggests swifter ossification within the irradiated group.

The electronic structure of Pb1-xLaxTiO3 (PLT) compounds for x ranging from 0 to 30 at. % of La is investigated by means of soft x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) at the Ti L-3,L-2 and O K edges. The greatest modification in the structure of the Ti 2p XANES spectra of the PLT compounds is observed in the region of the high energy peak of the L-3 edge (e(g) states), which exhibits a splitting in the undoped sample. As the amount of lanthanum increases, this splitting becomes less pronounced. This modification is interpreted as a decrease in the degree of disorder of titanium atoms, which is correlated to the substitution of Pb by La atoms. The structural changes observed at the low energy peaks of the O K-edge XANES spectra of the PLT compounds may be interpreted in terms of hybridization between O 2p, Ti 3d, and Pb 6p orbitals. A decrease in the degree of hybridization observed as Pb atoms are replaced by La atoms may be related to the differences in the ferroelectric properties observed between x=0.0 and x=0.30 compounds. We use the QCD pomeron model proposed by Landshoff and Nachtmann to compute the differential and the total cross-sections for pp scattering in order to discuss a QCD-based approach to the proton form factor. This model is quite dependent on the experimental electromagnetic form factor, and it is not totally clear why this form factor gives good results even at moderate transferred momentum. We exchange the electromagnetic form factor by the asymptotic QCD proton form factor determined by Brodsky and Lepage (BL) plus a prescription for its low energy behavior dictated by the existence of a dynamically generated gluon mass. We fit the data with this QCD inspired form factor and a value for the dynamical gluon mass consistent with the ones determined in the literature. Our results also provide a determination of the proton wave function at the origin, which appears in the BL form factor.

We study an exactly solvable two-dimensional model which mimics the basic features of the standard model. This model combines chiral coupling with an infrared behavior which resembles low energy QCD. This is done by adding a Podolsky higher-order derivative term in the gauge field to the Lagrangian of the usual chiral Schwinger model. We adopt a finite temperature regularization procedure in order to calculate the non-trivial fermionic Jacobian and obtain the photon and fermion propagators, first at zero temperature and then at finite temperature in the imaginary and real time formalisms. Both singular and non-singular cases, corresponding to the choice of the regularization parameter, are treated. In the nonsingular case there is a tachyonic mode as usual in a higher order derivative theory, however in the singular case there is no tachyonic excitation in the spectrum.

The polymer surface degradation and/or modification evolution of Teflon FEP and Mylar C films caused by a low energy electron beam were analyzed using a new method that consists in measuring the second crossover energy shift in the electronic emission curve. Upon prolonged irradiation, the second crossover energy shifts irreversibly to lower values in Teflon FEP but to higher values in Mylar C, indicating distinct mechanisms of surface degradation for the two polymers. The method represents a relatively inexpensive way to monitor early stages of surface degradation since the secondary electron emission comes from a maximum depth below the geometric surface of 100 mn in insulators. Proton computerized tomography deals with relatively thick targets like the human head or trunk. In this case precise analytical calculation of the proton final energy is a rather complicated task, thus the Monte Carlo simulation stands out as a solution. We used the GEANT4.8.2 code to calculate the proton final energy spectra after passing a thick Al absorber and compared it with the same conditions of the experimental data. The ICRU49, Ziegler85 and Ziegler2000 models from the low energy extension pack were used. The results were also compared with the SRIM2008 and MCNPX2.4 simulations, and with solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation in the Fokker-Planck approximation. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The luminescence properties of solid hydrated lanthanide squarates (Ln2(C4O4)3(H2O) x; x = 8 or 13;Ln3+ = Gd, La, Eu, Tb, Pr) are reported for temperatures down to 4.2K. The luminescence of the squarate group is observed for the Gd3+ and La3+ compounds at low temperatures (below 150K). The Pr3+ compound does not show any emission at all, not even at 4.2K. This is ascribed to the quenching of the Pr3+ emission by multiphonon relaxation and/or concentration quenching. The quantum efficiencies of the 5D0 emission of Eu3+ and of the 5D4 emission of Tb3+ in these squarate complexes are strikingly different. Whereas the Tb3+ emission shows a temperature independent quantum efficiency of 50% upon ligand excitation, the Eu3+ emission is strongly quenched, showing a temperature dependent quantum efficiency of 0.8% at 4.2K upon ligand excitation. This quenching is ascribed to the low energy position of the charge-transfer state of Eu3+ in these compounds.

A class of boson-fermion stars, whose spin-0 and spin-1/2 constituents interact through a U(1) current-current term in the Lagrangian density, is analyzed. It is shown that it describes the low-energy behavior of a system of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) from the leptonic sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. In this case the effective coupling constant A is related to the Fermi constant GF.

A renormalization scheme for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction based on a subtracted T-matrix equation is proposed and applied to the one-pion-exchange potential supplemented by contact interactions. The singlet and triplet scattering lengths are given to fix the renormalized strengths of the contact interactions. With only one scaling parameter (μ), the results show an overall very good agreement with neutron-proton data, particularly for the observables related to the triplet channel. The agreement is qualitative in the 1 S0 channel. Between the low-energy NN observables we have examined, the mixing parameter of the 3S1-3D1 states is the most sensitive to the scale. The scheme is renormalization group invariant for μ → ∞. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We discuss how the vacuum model of Celenza and Shakin with a squeezed gluon condensate can explain the existence of an infrared singular gluon propagator frequently used in calculations within the global color model. In particular, it reproduces a recently proposed QCD-motivated model where low energy chiral parameters were computed as a function of a dynamically generated gluon mass. We show how the strength of the confining interaction of this gluon propagator and the value of the physical gluon condensate may be connected.
