The crystal structure of the cyclic peptide disulfide Boc-Cys-Pro-Aib-Cys-NHMe has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The peptide crystallizes in the space group P212121, with A = 8.646(1), B = 18.462(2), C = 19.678(3)Å and Z = 4. The molecules adopt a highly folded compact conformation, stabilized by two intramolecular 4→ 1 hydrogen bonds between the Cys (1) and Pro (2) CO groups and the Cys (4) and methylamide NH groups, respectively. The backbone conformational angles for the peptide lie very close to those expected for a 310 helix. The S-S bridge adopts a right handed twist with a dihedral angle of 82°. The structure illustrates the role of stereochemically constrained residues, in generating novel peptide conformations. Aib, α-aminoisobutyric acid; Z, benzyloxycarbonyl; Boc, t-butyloxycarbonyl; OMe, methyl ester; OBz, benzyl ester; NHMe, N-methylamide; Tosyl, p-toluenesulfonyl.

The frequencies and variable-temperature behaviour of 35Cl nuclear quadrupole resonance in three aminocyclophosphazene derivatives are reported. The observed frequencies and multiplicity are correlated with the disposition of the substituents and the crystal structure. The temperature-dependence data are discussed in the framework of Bayer-Kushida-Brown equations and low-lying torsional (librational) frequencies and their average temperature coefficients are estimated. Brown's parabolic equation provides a good fit to the experimental data. Variable-temperature proton FT-NMR measurements (at 270 MHz) have also been carried out. The results are consistent with the NQR data and indicate the presence of two-site chemical exchange of the -NH protons and hydrogen bonding.

The seizure resistance of cast graphite-aluminium composite alloys containing graphite particles of various sizes was studied using a Hohman wear tester. If the graphite content is more than 2% these alloys can be selfmated without seizure under conditions of boundary lubrication. The size and shape of the graphite particles had no significant effect on seizure resistance. Owing to the extensive deformation and fragmentation of graphite, the low yield strength of the aluminium matrix and the low flow stress of the graphite particles, a continuous layer of graphite is formed on the mating surfaces even after a short running-in period. This layer persisted even after extensive wear deformation.

The IR spectra of some LaNi1−xBxO3 (B = Cr, Fe, and Co) compounds having perovskite structure have been studied in the range 1000−300 cm−1. An investigation of the changes in the metal-oxygen stretching frequency as x → xc from the insulating side has been carried out. An important feature is that as x → xc the vibrational features in the infrared spectra disappear when the resistivity is not, vert, similar10−1 Ω cm which is of two orders of magnitude more than the value of varrho0 at which the temperature coefficient of resistance changes sign. Mössbauer studies on Fe-containing samples with various conductivities show that the isomer shift decreases as conductivity increases which is indicative of larger Fe---O overlap.

Left handed duplexes are shown to be in agreement with the X-ray intensity data of A-, B- and D-forms of DNA. The structures are stereochemically satisfactory because they were obtained following a stereochemical guideline derived from theory and single crystal structure data of nucleic acid components. The same stereochemical guideline also led to right handed duplexes for B- and D-forms of DNA which have stereochemically preferred conformation and hence are superior to those given by Arnott and coworkers.

Postnatal myofibre characteristics and muscle mass are largely determined during fetal development and may be significantly affected by epigenetic parent-of-origin effects. However, data on such effects in prenatal muscle development that could help understand unexplained variation in postnatal muscle traits are lacking. In a bovine model we studied effects of distinct maternal and paternal genomes, fetal sex, and non-genetic maternal effects on fetal myofibre characteristics and muscle mass. Data from 73 fetuses (Day153, 54% term) of four genetic groups with purebred and reciprocal cross Angus and Brahman genetics were analyzed using general linear models. Parental genomes explained the greatest proportion of variation in myofibre size of Musculus semitendinosus (80-96%) and in absolute and relative weights of M. supraspinatus, M. longissimus dorsi, M. quadriceps femoris and M. semimembranosus (82-89% and 56-93%, respectively). Paternal genome in interaction with maternal genome (P<0.05) explained most genetic variation in cross sectional area (CSA) of fast myotubes (68%), while maternal genome alone explained most genetic variation in CSA of fast myofibres (93%, P<0.01). Furthermore, maternal genome independently (M. semimembranosus, 88%, P<0.0001) or in combination (M. supraspinatus, 82%; M. longissimus dorsi, 93%; M. quadriceps femoris, 86%) with nested maternal weight effect (5-6%, P<0.05), was the predominant source of variation for absolute muscle weights. Effects of paternal genome on muscle mass decreased from thoracic to pelvic limb and accounted for all (M. supraspinatus, 97%, P<0.0001) or most (M. longissimus dorsi, 69%, P<0.0001; M. quadriceps femoris, 54%, P<0.001) genetic variation in relative weights. An interaction between maternal and paternal genomes (P<0.01) and effects of maternal weight (P<0.05) on expression of H19, a master regulator of an imprinted gene network, and negative correlations between H19 expression and fetal muscle mass (P<0.001), suggested imprinted genes and miRNA interference as mechanisms for differential effects of maternal and paternal genomes on fetal muscle.

The frequencies of the two modes of surface plasmon oscillations exhibited by coated semiconductor spheres can either decrease or increase with the size of the particle depending upon the ratio ωh1/ωh2, ε∞1 and ε∞2. When ωh1 = ωh2, the soft mode frequency becomes independent of the size of the sphere.

A-DNA pattern, obtained using a flat plat camera, was indexed by Fuller Image on the basis of a c-face centred monoclinic cell with A = 22.24 Å, B = 40.62 Å, C = 28.15 Å and β = 97.0°. A precession photograph of A-DNA which gives an undistorted picture of the lattice, showed that the unit cell parameters as given by Fuller Image were not quite correct. The precession photograph showed a strong meridional reflection (R = 0.00 Å−1) on the 11th layer line. But the occurrence of the meridional reflection on the 11th layer line could not be explained on the basis of the cell parameters given by Fuller Image ; using those cell parameters the reflection which comes closest to the meridian on 11th layer line is at R = 0.025 Å−1. However, a simple interchange of a and b values accounted for the meridional reflection on 11th layer line. The corrected cell parameter refined against 28 strong spots are A = 40.75 Å, B = 22.07 Å, C = 28.16 Å and β = 97.5°. In the new unit cell of A-DNA, the packing arrangement of the two molecules is different from that in the old one. Nonetheless, our earlier contention is again reaffirmed that both right and left-handed A-DNA are stereochemically allowed and consistent with the observed fibre pattern.

The ovary of the immature female rat is comprised of primary and medium-sized preantral follicles. Upon stimulation with FSH or PMSG, the cathepsin-D activity, a representative lysosomal enzyme of granulosa cells, is reduced by 50% (P < 0.01). 17β-Estradiol at the doses tried was unable to mimic this effect. Blockade of steroidogenesis with cyanoketone also had no effect on the cathepsin-D activity of isolated granulosa cells. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), however, at a dose of 1 mg/rat was able to inhibit PMSG's tropic action. It brought about an increase in cathepsin-D activity and reduction in steroidogenic activity of isolated granulosa cells. The atretogenic activity of DHT could be relieved by supplementation with exogenous FSH. DHT was observed to significantly reduce (P < 0.01) endogenous FSH and LH levels within 12–18 h of its injection suggesting that its atretic effect was due to its action at the pituitary rather than the gonad. In addition to the above the ability of 15 IU of PMSG to reduce cathepsin-D activity of granulosa cells was also significantly reduced (P < 0.01) if endogenous FSH was neutralized by a specific FSH antiserum. The present study suggests that as far as small and medium-sized primary and preantral follicles are concerned, FSH lack is the essential signal for onset of atresia.

Fourier Transform (FT)-near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS) was investigated as a non-invasive technique for estimating percentage (%) dry matter of whole intact 'Hass' avocado fruit. Partial least squares (PLS) calibration models were developed from the diffuse reflectance spectra to predict % dry matter, taking into account effects of seasonal variation. It is found that seasonal variability has a significant effect on model predictive performance for dry matter in avocados. The robustness of the calibration model, which in general limits the application for the technique, was found to increase across years (seasons) when more seasonal variability was included in the calibration set. The R-v(2) and RMSEP for the single season prediction models predicting on an independent season ranged from 0.09 to 0.61 and 2.63 to 5.00, respectively, while for the two season models predicting on the third independent season, they ranged from 0.34 to 0.79 and 2.18 to 2.50, respectively. The bias for single season models predicting an independent season was as high as 4.429 but <= 1.417 for the two season combined models. The calibration model encompassing fruit from three consecutive years yielded predictive statistics of R-v(2) = 0.89, RMSEP = 1.43% dry matter with a bias of -0.021 in the range 16.1-39.7% dry matter for the validation population encompassing independent fruit from the three consecutive years. Relevant spectral information for all calibration models was obtained primarily from oil, carbohydrate and water absorbance bands clustered in the 890-980, 1005-1050, 1330-1380 and 1700-1790 nm regions. These results indicate the potential of FT-NIRS, in diffuse reflectance mode, to non-invasively predict the % dry matter of whole 'Hass' avocado fruit and the importance of the development of a calibration model that incorporates seasonal variation. The i.r. spectra of some Ln2BO4 and LnSrBO4 compounds (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm or Gd;B = Fe, Al, Co or Cu) with K2NiF4 or related structures have been studied in the range 800-300 cm−1. The BO6 octahedra in compounds with K2NiF4 structure are elongated. The assignment of the bands in terms of internal modes of sheets of bridged BO6 octahedra or square-planar BO4 sheets has been considered. The observed spectra are correlated with those of solid solutions of these oxides and of LnBO3 perovskites. Unusually high stretching frequencies found in some of the oxides are discussed in terms of the short B---O bonds in the basal plane and the Ln---O bonds along the c axis.

The Finite Element Method (FEM) has made a number of otherwise intractable problems solvable. An important aspect for achieving an economical and accurate solution through FEM is matching the formulation and the computational organisation to the problem. This was realised forcefully in the present case of the solution of a class of moving contact boundary value problems of fastener joints. This paper deals with the problem of changing contact at the pin-hole interface of a fastener joint. Due to moving contact, the stresses and displacements are nonlinear with load. This would, in general, need an interactive-incremental approach for solution. However, by posing the problem in an inverse way, a solution is sought for obtaining loads to suit given contact configuration. Numerical results are given for typical isotropic and composite plates with rigid pins. Two cases of loading are considered: (i) load applied only at the edges of the plate and (ii) load applied at the pin and reacted at a part of the edge of the plate. Load-contact relationships, compliance and stress-patterns are investigated. This paper clearly demonstrates the simplification achieved by a suitable formulation of the problem. The results are of significance to the design and analysis of fastener joints.
